No one gets through this beautiful but broken world without heartache and sadness. This is the inspiring story of how God sustained one family in a time of great hardship.
Finding Bittersweet by Ken Pierpont (2019) is an inspirational story that is also a testimony to God’s faithfulness. Pierpont allows the reader to relive with him and his family a summer spent completely dependent upon God’s promise to provide all their material needs. After ten years serving a church in the Detroit suburbs, Ken found himself during the summer of 2017 without any income or other means of supporting his family. Rather than give in to despair or abandon God’s call and seek secular employment, Ken chose to depend upon God to fill the gas tank of his seventeen-year-old red Jeep and provide ministry opportunities. The summer proved to be a surprise blessing. Throughout the summer, Ken was able to see God meet all his and his family’s needs while providing him with numerous opportunities to preach and tell the Gospel story. The summer ended with a call for Ken to pastor Bethel Church in Jackson, Michigan.
Finding Bittersweet is the first of Ken Pierpont’s inspirational books that I have read. I have listened to his podcasts and some of his sermons. In those, as with the books, Pierpont teaches the Bible and presents the Gospel using short stories from his life experiences. Having enjoyed Finding Bittersweet, I am reading For a Few Days: Stories from a Season of Life on a Family Farm (2013).
The author's tone is his writing is very bitter, especially in the first half of this book. He seemed more focused on degrading his former church than looking at the blessings that were going to come. I did not feel encouraged at all by this book. It lacked the grace and compassion that Christians should show. Even when wronged God calls us (Chistians) to forgive. There are always two sides to every story and this is only one side. In my opinion this book is overpriced.
This book is written a stream of consciousness style which made it difficult for me to read, I really tried to enjoy and finish this book, but I couldn’t. The author seemed very unhappy with events in his life. I found no spiritual encouragement in this book. DNF'd at 20%.
