Return to the original world of Blade Runner 2019.
Welcome to the rain soaked world of Los Angeles 2019 - a dystopic world of Replicants, Spinners and hardboiled future noir. There's a new Blade Runner in town, and she's out for blood. Replicant blood.
This officially sanctioned sequel comic to the original Blade Runner film is written by Michael Green, the screenwriter of Blade Runner 2049.
Michael Green is an American television and film writer, as well as a comic book scripter. Green grew up in Mamaroneck, New York.
Green has been a contributor for Superman/Batman. He will also co-write a Green Lantern movie with Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, set for release in 2011. He wrote the six-issue story arc "Lovers and Madmen" for Batman Confidential. Green was a producer and writer on Everwood and Heroes.
Green is the creator and writer of Kings, an NBC drama based on the biblical story of King David but set in an alternate present. Kings premiered on 15 March 2009 but was cancelled soon after. The remainder of season 1 (thirteen episodes) was shown in the summer of 2009.
I first read this graphic novel in December 2019, & decided I needed to reread it before starting the next part of the story which was published this month. I remembered the artwork being excellent, but was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the story even more a second time around & upped my rating. It's great to see the Blade Runner story continue, & a graphic novel is the perfect format to give it justice. My original review, from 2019, is below.
In 2019 Los Angeles detective Aahna "Ash" Ashina is looking for a missing mother & her daughter in a new graphic novel from the Blade Runner franchise. Michael Green (the screenwriter of Blade Runner 2049) comes up with a story that thankfully avoids excessive references to the original Blade Runner. However, Green's writing is overshadowed by the superb artwork of Andres Guinaldo which is excellent throughout. A sequel will follow next year. Until then, have a better one.
Still just as good as the first time. It's not easy to capture just the right tone, visually and verbally, for Blade Runner, and this graphic novel does it really well. For some reason, I didn't continue through the rest of the series the last time I read this, so now I'm going back to it and then reading the next two volumes.
2019 read:
This is a great return to the world of the original Blade Runner film. The art is stylish, expanding the horizons just enough. In particular, I liked the idea of the border crossing, which suggests quite a lot but leaves plenty of mystery. I wondered if that scene was a nod to Denis Villeneuve and Sicario. I also like the main character, who is not simply another Deckard. She has her own interesting history and struggles, which make her see the same world in a slightly different way.
The main plot—Ash's investigation into the disappearance of Selwyn's wife and daughter—is intriguing and fits right into the film stories. Everything we learn about Tyrell feels exactly like what he would've been up to at that time. I appreciate the Michael Green's restraint in not allowing this story to intrude into the movie. He demonstrates confidence that this world is big enough for a lot of stories to be happening simultaneously, and we don't need explicit references to the movies to validate the graphic novel's version of the world.
The difficulty of Blade Runner in book form is finding the right amount of narration. Obviously the original film struggled with that balance, too, in the changes from the theatrical release to the final cut. Blade Runner is such a primarily visual story that it's challenging to have it told to me in a lot of words. (And yes, I know it was based on a short novel, but the movie became so much more than what the source material suggested that I regard it as visual storytelling more than a book adaptation.) For me, the graphic novel is right on the edge—sometimes the narration felt almost too much; but in general it's fine.
The end of this volume holds out the same tease the we've had in the movies: Will we ever see the off-world colonies? I'm very interested to continue reading and see what happens next!
Gritty and grim, a new story in this future/present has Blade Runner Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashino investigating the case of a missing mother and daughter. Not her usual sort of case, but when the head of a corp “employs” you..... Ash finds out that Alexander Selwyn (corp guy) is a buddy of Tyrell’s and they both seem to want the girl recovered, and not just cuz she’s a minor in danger. This LA has replicants living throughout the lower parts of the city, and Ash goes through them and anyone else in her way to find the girl. It’s a dirty, grimy, dangerous place with desperate people everywhere. Ash has her own secrets, and has them used against her as she goes up against Selwyn, Tyrell, and a variety of replicants and others. The story ends with a number of unanswered questions; I’m fascinated by this expanded world and its many shady situations.
So if seen Blade Runner movies (both are great, I'd say the newer one even better than the original TBH) then you need to check this out. It's the same gritty cyberpunk feel of those movies. We follow a character name Ash as she's trying to solve a mystery of why a mother has taken a child away from her father. Of course as we get deeper into the story things get darker and more fucked up with plenty of twist and turns.
This is a great action/mystery story with a solid self-contained payoff while still leaving it open ended for more. The writer and artist clearly understand each other as they play off each other well without heavy exposition dumps while showing what is happening in this world. The main character is great, as well as the side cast. My only complaint is it felt a little short. Otherwise I loved this. A 4.5 out of 5.
Blade Runner 2019 is the new series set in the world created by Philip K. Dick, starring a cool new lead named Ash, and it promises to become one of the coolest titles of Titan Comics, but the story of this first volume was done too much by the numbers for me to give it that much praise, the mystery was too predictable, but I loved the ride nonetheless, the world and the atmosphere felt pure Blade Runner, so I'm sure this will only get better after this first book. I read this while listening to the soundtrack of Deus Ex Human Revolution, and let me tell you, perfection.
With Ridley Scott we got some classic movies one of the them being "Blade Runner" which gave us Rutger Hauer as a Replicant being hunted by the Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) and he stole the sun from Ford in his immortal performance that showed the inhumanity through the eyes of creature created by mankind to do the heavy lifting and war, basically slaves without any rights. With Blade Runner 2049 we got a further look into the universe of the Replicant who are by far more interesting than the average blade runner who does the hunting and killing.
With Blade Runner 2019 they created a new Blade Runner who actually has an interesting backstory and yet is as unwanted as any Replicant she is hired to hunt down in order to retrieve a daughter who is being mothered by a series of Replicants who are artificial replacements for the mother who died. The mother ran with a daughter that is wanted back and so the hero a female former Blade Runner is doing the hunting or is she too being hunted by people who have a different agenda.
An excellent addition to Blade Runner universe with some excellent art to accompany the story. Well worth you time if you enjoy the Blade Runner world as created by Ridley Scott. The Blade Runner as created by Philip Dick is an excellent story but has to compete with Ridleys version who is clearly the more fascinating version.
Well worth your time reading this new Blade Runner story.
This graphic novel presents an original story with a new set of characters in the Blade Runner setting. The creators are able to portray the cyberpunk world well, and the story has a few twists that also make this feel like it belongs in the Blade Runner world.
I enjoyed the first volume of the series. Good artwork and good story. I would have liked a bit more action, but this is a great start to the series.
I liked Ash's character, it always interesting to have a character that is an out cast from both side. I have always liked the old lone wolf private detectives. Most of whom started out as police. There is a lot of story to explore on Ash's peraon and professional history. On the artistic side something I did like was Ash's injuries were kept for the reminder of the series.
I am very interested in see where the series goes from here. Ash has burned many bridges, but has an interesting future.
Really enjoyed this volume of this new Blade Runner series! This comic really captures the cyberpunk atmosphere of the films. The main character Ash is a cool character and it made me want to see her live through to the end. The artwork could be better, but otherwise, this was a good first volume!
Picked this up on a whim and am very happy I did. Aahna is a great character, and the world building is balanced perfectly between familiar territory and new material. Just great. Hope this gets an adaption.
This is a pretty great continuation of the Blade Runner universe with a different set of characters. Michael Green does a great job of bringing us back into this world and creates an intriguing story populated with interesting characters. Really looking forward to seeing where this one goes.
Oh, how did I not read this excellent series when it was first published? It continues the fantastic sci-fi moody atmosphere set up in the first Blade Runner movie. I loved it. I read the first couple of issues via ComiXology Unlimited, then saw the 3-volume paperback collection of the entire series (in a nice colorful box). It would have been nice of them to include the FBCD issue of Blade Runner 2019. Which I have in Kindle format.
I loved the writing, the characters, the feel of the story. Let's make more Blade Runner movies or a Netflix or Hulu version. I will move on to Blade Runner 2029 next. I can read the entire collection (all 3 volumes) from my digital library. And onto Blade Runner Origins, which the library has Vols 1 & 3 (where is Vol 2?).
A very agreeable surprise indeed. I never expect much from franchises lest I’ll be disappointed, which happened more often than not over the years.
I’ve been a fan of cyberpunk since the early 80’s and Blade Runner is of course a shining star in my pantheon of major works. I was apprehensive when getting this series but I had to give it a try and I certainly don’t regret it. Green, Johnson and to a lesser extent Guinaldo perfectly captured the essence of the movie, the noirish feel, the atmosphere, the characters and their inner conflicts.
The plot itself is not amazingly original and could (and has been) be set in many different contexts. The fact it is used in this one, by people understanding what they’re dealing with, gets it up one notch, a treat for fans of the movie or more generally cyberpunk.
The art good but could be better. If Guinaldo has a good enough sense of storytelling he has none whatsoever when it comes down to the fine art of inking. Did it with a ballpoint pen for all I know. (Too) Many artists tend to rely on coloring only to enhance their job nowadays, missing this crucial step that really can embellish even mediocre art (or butcher decent art, goes both ways).
Syd Mead does some amazing secondary covers. I’d sure like to see the whole book done this way.
This has no business being this good. It made me tear up in parts. The Blade Runner world is so interesting from an ethical point of view. The central question of the world seems to be empathy or indifference, compassion or brutality. And this comic series explores thes ideas in depth. The main character, Ash Ashina, a Blade Runner, is so interesting. The story reveals her character in a very artful and deliberate way. Ash manages to do what you expect her to do while also surprising you with her decisions. That sounds paradoxical, but it is what it is. The art is beautiful. There is a lot of attention paid to the background and the worldbuilding. Also, there is a consistent gushing neon color palette that is also satisfying and very apropos the setting.
Blade Runner 2019 vol. 1 by Michael Green and Mike Johnson is a graphic novel that captures the flavour the films without imitating it. The visuals by Andres Guinaldo and Marco Lesko fit the script very well and combine with the words to give a compelling narrative. A gritty, future noir that needs a musical score. Thanks to #NetGalley, #TitanBooks, and the creators for the review copy of #BladeRunner2019Vol1LosAngeles.
Pretty good start to a noir mystery set in the world of the original Blade Runner, though featuring all-new characters. The artwork is well-done and the story is carefully parceled out (though it could be a bit harder edged, for me at least). I'll be looking forward to the next volume in this.
