I, The Wolf, am sick of being the bad guy. I’m taking over this book. Dear Readers, Fairytales are nonsense. They’re full of wolves pestering pigs and picking on sweet little girls in red hoods. But I would never do those things. I knit! I bake blueberry pie! You know what I really want to do? I WANT TO RESCUE A PRINCESS! And if I can’t? I QUIT! Yours sincerely, Wolfie Wolfie may want to be a hero, but he’s about to discover that arguing with this book’s narrator is not the best way to improve his image…

Deb knew she wanted to be a writer when she was 7 years old. Her first story was about a man made out of cheese. It wasn’t very good. She’s had much more practice writing since then and strangely enough her first writing job was for a kids’ show on channel Ten called “Cheez TV”. After 7 years of writing scripts about everything from llamas to bungy jumping and how to go to the toilet in outer space, Deb wrote her first novel - Max Remy Superspy Part 1: In Search of the Time and Space Machine.

It’s about a feisty girl called Max and her best friend Linden who travel the world as secret agents fighting bad guys. It’s an action packed series based on loads of adventures Deb had, just after she left school. She’s slept beside alligators, been harassed by monkeys (and who hasn’t) was almost
traded for a camel and was thrown in jail at gunpoint, twice.
Deb still claims her innocence to this day.

Together with sport icon Johnny Warren, Deb also created
the Jasper Zammit (Soccer Legend) series. It’s about a
young boy called Jasper and his best friend Lil, who love
their soccer and dream of being soccer legends, just like
Johnny. Deb lives in Sydney with her partner Todd, who
is almost as cute as Linden.

Deb Abela is more well-known for her fabulous junior fiction titles. As far as I know, Wolfie is her first foray into picture book territory, but it's a beauty!

Much like the wolf in Aaron Blabey's The Bad Guys, Wolfie just wants to be seen as good, kind and brave. He's tired of the bad boy image and the bad press. He wants to feature in a story where he gets to be the hero.

But the old stories and perceptions keep getting in his way.

Told with comedic delight, Abela's Wolfie is complemented by Connah Brecon's fun illustrations and naughty sense of humour.

Perfect for the 4+ reader and lovers of fractured fairytales of any age.

Those Poor wolves.

Have you ever read a story where the wolf is a hero? The wolf is the good character? Or the wolf is someone that we should all look up to?

I haven’t but perhaps there is hope that not every story with a wolf in it has terror within!

Wolfie: An unlikely Hero by Deborah Abela and Connah Brecon is a humorous tale where a wolf tries to take on the storytelling skills of the narrator…and gets more than he bargained for!

Wolfie wants to be known for his running skills, his gleaming teeth, his loyalty and his bravery and the narrator takes note….but not in the way Wolfie was hoping for.

Wolf: an unlikely hero made us laugh and it also made us feel sorry for poor Wolfie – but it also made us think that perhaps we shouldn’t trust wolves…or should we?

Wolfie: an unlikely hero allows the reader to see how stories, when changed in the slightest way, can make huge differences. This story shows the reader how wonderful storytelling is and that we can all play a big role in telling different stories.

Fairytales are great places to help children become interested in reading and Wolfie plays on all of those wolf containing stories!

A great little picture book which is presented simply, and with great humour but has a profound message. Are we judged by the actions of our parents and previous generations? This story of the little wolf, son of the Big bad Wolf who wants to be good, but is not believed because of well, because of his father will hopefully bring about many conversations
about judging others and taking people in their own merits. This is indeed a wonderful story and Abela is a very good author.

I like how Wolfie doesn't actually say that he doesn't do any of the things he doesn't want wolves to be represented doing, just that he wants a reframing of the agenda on wolves in fairy tales 🤣🤣

I'm not sure Wolfie took over the book as he still seemed to be at the whim of the author and he was unhappy about the ending. Still a good book.
