2.0_Stars - "It was (barely) OK", I Can't say "I liked it"
This audiobook is the fourth I have heard in the Rick Cahill series. I started with #3 and #4, rating both 4_Stars, then #5 and #6, rating both 2_Stars. I don't intend to listen to any more of this series.

Quite frankly, Cahill's murderous intentions, and his attempts to carry them out, were nothing more than ugly revenge. They were certainly a lot worse than "... a tainted hero living by his own code." as the book's blurb claims.

He pursued his revenge through the latter half of the book, even though it became painfully obvious to the reader/listener that he was on a fool's errand. Bad guys morphed into good guys, and vice versa. It was a "noir" version of PI drivel and I was glad when I finished it!

The narration by Travis Baldree was satisfactory, save for the mental musings by Rick often blurring into his own actual dialogue.

My only wish is that I had not completed listening to the audiobook and that I could return it to Audible for a refund credit!

The sixth entry in Matt Coyle's Rick Cahill series is another very entertaining novel and ties up some of the threads that the author has developed in the earlier books in the series. Cahill is now a P.I. in San Diego, but years earlier, when he was a cop in Santa Barbara, his wife was murdered there. Cahill was the prime suspect in the killing, but there was not enough evidence to charge him and he left Santa Barbara with the reputation of a cop who had gotten away with murder.

Now, Krista Landingham, Rick's former partner on the Santa Barbara force, has been killed by a hit-and-run driver. Krista's sister, Leah, invites Cahill to the funeral. Rick figures that he has to go to honor Krista's memory, even though he knows that he's going to face a world of trouble from other Santa Barbara cops who still hate him for allegedly disgracing the department.

Once at the funeral, Leah tells Rick that she believes her sister was murdered, even though the police have classified the case as a hit and run accident. She wants Cahill to investigate, and when he takes the case, Cahill is stunned to learn that just before she died, Krista had reopened the case of his wife's murder.

In Cahill's mind then, his wife's death and that of his former partner are clearly linked, and his investigation into the two killings will take him down a very dark path and entangle him with some very nasty adversaries. Cahill continues to be a very appealing protagonist and, like the others in the series, this book is very well-plotted with lots of action and plenty of twists and turns that will keep the reader on the edge of his or her seat. All in all, a very good read.

“Lost Tomorrows” is an excellent action-packed private eye story. The sixth in Coyle’s Rick Cahill series, it brings Cahill back to Santa Barbara to confront the demons of his past. This is where he found himself accused once, as a young police officer, of murdering his wife and, even as he returns to pay last respects to his old partner, every back is turned against him. No one believes him. Fourteen years have gone by and the whole city still holds the accusations against him. It didn’t help that he had an alibi he couldn’t tell anyone.

Now, his ex partner Krista’s sister wants him to look into the hit and run that killed her because something just doesn’t add up and he’s partnered now with the retired officer who once accused him of murdering his wife. It’s not just the classic tale of the stranger from out of town, but a returning Pariah who can’t catch a break.

An effortless read -one night’s read start to finish. The next book in the series has Cahill picking up the pieces after the explosive ending here, but neither book is a prerequisite for the other.

I was lucky enough to win a copy of LOST TOMORROWS by Matt Coyle. This is version 6 of the RICK CAHILL detective series. I am not particularly drawn to the who done it detective format but this book is very good following the basic format. I really like the first person telling of the story from start to finish. This lends a more interesting take to the story by adding thoughts, insight and sarcasm at certain points in the book. I liked Coyles use of this throughout the story.
Chapter 1 sets the stage for the entire premise of the story. It's short and to the point, (Just 3 pages long) and hits most of the major points that are crucial to the story. It hooked me in the time it took to read these few hundred words. The character of Cahill thinks along similar lines as I do with his reasoning of why he should or should not attend a funeral of a dear friend from his past. I now had to finish the book.
The telling of the tale is tight with short chapters that jump around from location to location with Rick Cahill. There isn't too much wasted time with facts that do not push the story forward. Coyle has this character down pat with this sixth edition. There is enough mystery written into the narrative to keep the reader guessing and enough room for the author to take the story wherever he wanted it to go. I never could guess where the next chapter was going to take me but I was more than willing to go along for the ride. It is a quick moving, easy and interesting read that will not let you put the book down for too long. 4-1/2 stars for LOST TOMORROWS.

For fans of Detective, Police , who done it and thriller stories.

I found tough guy Private Investigator Rick Cahill to be supremely annoying.

Clues, and the motivation of the broken protagonist are repeated again and again, in case I'm not able to follow.

Disclaimer: Jumped into the middle of the series, so maybe there's some nuance I'm missing.

Matt Coyle has written another terrific novel in his series involving his ongoing private eye, Rick Cahill. Cahill still blames himself for his wife’s murder. She was strangled many years before when he was in the Santa Barbara Police Department. When she died, Cahill was having a tryst with his police partner. The police in Santa Barbara think he murdered his wife. They hate him. Cahill has long since become a private eye but still lives with a deep, self-sabotaging blackness and feelings of unworthiness because of what happened.

Now living in San Diego, Cahill learns that his old police partner and lover has been killed in a hit and run in Santa Barbara. At the time she was run over, she was investigating a cold case--the murder of Cahill's wife. Needless to say, this brings out old demons. The sparks fly when the sister of Cahill's dead partner hires him to come to Santa Barbara to find out who killed her sister. They are immediately attracted to one another. Both know that the murders of Cahill’s wife and his new lover's sister are connected. To solve the case, Cahill must not only relive the past he has tried to forget, but come to terms with it. He is a complicated character, willing to lie for a higher principle, and also deeply remorseful when he causes harm to any innocent person.

Coyle takes the reader through the clues while following the ups and downs of a protagonist who wants to do the right thing but is still haunted by his past sins. Will Cahill’s guilt cause him to throw away a chance at love in order to avenge his wife’s and his partner’s deaths—not to mention his own suffering? Sharp dialogue, intricate plotting, and a shocking ending. I highly recommend it.

The sixth in the series, P.I. Rick Cahill is back and his life is a mess. It becomes even messier with a phone call. Krista Landingham, Rick’s former mentor and partner at the SBPD, has died. Rick doesn’t want to go to the funeral, and for good reason, but knows he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he doesn’t. He returns to Santa Barbara, the city that has haunted him for years. It’s where his wife was murdered, and in the SBPD’s eyes, Rick is forever guilty. Leah, Krista’s younger sister, convinces Rick to work for her. She's convinced Krista was murdered and wants Rick to investigate. The deeper Rick digs, the closer he gets to the truth of what happened to his wife. He’s inevitably led down a dark path of vengeance from which he may never recover while possibly sabotaging his chance at redemption and love. We’ve been waiting the entire series for the truth about his wife’s murder and what’s finally revealed in a shocking ending doesn’t disappoint. Heart-breaking, suspenseful, and raw: a must-read for fans of Rick Cahill and anyone who loves a well-crafted, gritty P.I. novel.

Finally. In a tense, emotional , and suspense filled story, Rick Cahill discovers who killed his wife years earlier. Part of me is excited and grateful for an end to this long running mystery.... while another part of me is sad to see the conclusion to this storyline. I've developed a love of this character and these books and I certainly hope it's not the last we see of Rick. A good book ALWAYS affects you emotionally, and this one definitely has. Thank you Matt for creating such an interesting and engaging, and real person on the pages of the Rick Cahill books.

“Lost Tomorrows” by Matt Coyle is a continuation of former cop Rick Cahill’s troubled journey. New readers will immediately become immersed in the story because most background events took place before regular readers met Cahill for the first time in “Yesterday’s Echo.” Coyle expertly pulls readers into Cahill’s previously unknown past with news about an acquaintance from Santa Barbara, and this person, like many in Cahill’s life, is dead.

Coyle’s solid narrative presents the Rick Cahill readers have come to know; complicated, troubled, and guilt-ridden, and yet someone who cares deeply about justice, occasionally at the expense of written law. Everyday happenings are mixed in with the traumatic events to construct a solid, believable plot that keeps readers guessing and most of all, involved in the welfare of Cahill. Readers second guess him, chastise him, but most of all root for him during the emotional rollercoaster ride of this story.

In each of the preceding books, Coyle has pushed Cahill closer and closer to a dark and precarious abyss, driven by his overwhelming guilt about the death of his wife. This is the darkest and most shocking book yet. Readers cannot help but wonder just whose tomorrows will be lost at the end of the book, and the ending will leave everyone stunned, frazzled, and emotionally drained,

In “Lost Tomorrows,” Coyle takes Cahill to the shocking and disturbing edge of darkness. I received a review copy from Mat Coyle, and Oceanview Publishing. This is the best Rick Cahill book yet.

Rick Cahill is accused of murdering his wife 14 years ago. Revealing his alibi cost him his job on the police force. Now when another women in his past is murdered; Rick knows these two crimes are connected. I was not a fan of Rick with his goal of vengeance. His clue following left much to be desired. Wonder if this is the end of the series? "A copy of this book was provided by Oceanview Publishing via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."

In this entry of the series the author takes our hero back to the beginning to when things really started to head south for him, Santa Barbara, California - and his wife's unsolved murder that 90% of the Santa Barbara Police Department thinks he's guilty of. Rick is still reeling from the events of the previous book when his he gets the call that his former partner in Santa Barbara was killed in a hit and run accident. However, Krista's sister, Leah, thinks she was murdered and she hires Rick to run a parallel investigation with the cops who are leaning towards "random drunk driver."

This was a solid entry to the series even if I did think Rick's blind rage for vengeance made him a pretty dumb and sloppy PI on this case. At least this go-around not every woman who enters his orbit ends up dead and now that the mystery of his wife's murder is solved it allows the author to take the series into new directions - although seriously Leah, run girl.

Readers who have enjoyed the previous books in this series will not be disappointed. New readers will be hooked and go back to read the series from the beginning. After years of Cahill's search, will we finally know who killed Cahill's wife many years ago? Was the recent hit and run death of his former partner really an accident? Are the two deaths connected? If you're a Cahill fan, this is a must read. Highly recommend.

Lost Tomorrows by Matt Coyle Rick Cahill is a flawed, stubborn but likeable character. In this fast paced, action filled, emotionally charged suspense novel, he finally finds out the identity his wife's killer. After the 14 year mystery is solved is this possible end of the series?

This book was highly recommended and I thought it lived up to its hype. The characters are very well drawn. There were some spots where there was some redundancy and I thought the ending was rushed so that everything was neatly tied up. However, this is a welcome addition to books about tough and procedural detectives.

San Diego PI Rick Cahill gets a phone call that Krista Landingham, his former training officer partner on the Santa Barbara Police Department has been killed in a hit-and-run. Rick goes back to Santa Monica for the funeral and is hired by Krista's sister Leah to investigate her death. He is partnered with Grimes, the former SBPD officer who wrongly accused Rick of his wife Colleen's murder. Krista had been working on cold cases, including Colleen's unsolved murder. Can the two deaths be somehow connected? Rick is obsessed with getting justice for Colleen's murder and to finally clear his name. Rick's tunnel vision convinces him that SBPD cop and Krista's ex-husband Weaver is responsible and he takes careful steps to hide his trail and plan for his revenge. But a last-minute alibi for Weaver shatters Rick's theory and he narrowly avoids killing an innocent man. With the help of Leah, Rick finally puts the pieces together and a deadly confrontation occurs at her house with the real killers.

This series gets better with each book and this one ends with a bang.

Literary suspense is my favorite fiction genre so I was surprisingly drawn into this whodunnit and enjoyed the ride. Read it in a day. (I read the ARC and the typos were annoying but imagine they’re not present in the published version.) The protagonist Rich Cahill is complicated and flawed, and likable. I’ll read more of Matt Coyle’s. Quite a good plotter.

Lost Tomorrows by Matt Coyle is a highly recommended noir whodunit featuring a troubled private investigator and the sixth book in the series.

San Diego P. I. Rick Cahill receives a phone call learning that his former partner on the Santa Barbara Police Department, Krista Landingham, is dead. When Rick goes to the funeral, his past is ever present and thrust into his face by the officers attending the funeral. His wife, Colleen, was murdered in the city and Rick was considered guilty by the police, but certain key people, like his former partner, knew he could not have been the guilty party. Now Leah, Krista's sister, wants Rick to assist another P.I. and look into her sister's death. She thinks Krista's death was murder, not an accident. Rick soon begins to wonder if Krista's death is somehow linked to Colleen's death because she had just reopened and started investigating the cold case.

This is my first Rick Cahill mystery and I could easily follow the backstory of the first person narrative without reading the other books in the series. What happened in his past is either explained if it is important to the plot and/or hinted at if it involves his character and background. The premise is set up immediately and the action escalates. The case is carefully presented and you can follow the twists and leads clearly as the investigation unfolds. The chapters are short and concise, helping move the plot along quickly.

Rick is a well-developed character and Coyle presents all his strengths and flaws. He is likely clinically depressed, but he is also an intelligent, attentive investigator who will follow any leads. Rick shows vulnerability and a hesitation to open himself up to any relationship as he doesn't think he deserves any happiness. This book could easily entice readers to read the previous books in the series to try an unlock more of what caused Rick's damaged psyche.

For some reason I did not realize that this is the sixth book in this series, but it became evident as the main character referred back to previous cases he had been involved in. I liked the premise of this novel - that an ex-cop investigates the recent murder of his mentor. It was not until the last quarter of the book, that I realized that I did not care for the main character. He sees things as black and white and too quickly jumps to conclusions. I did not understand his off and on romantic relationship.
Here is one comment that in no way reflects poorly on this novel - I have noticed in many novels (and probably in real life too), someone has gotten away with a crime. At some point new evidence is found or the case is reopened. The original culprit then commits a new crime to keep the first crime hidden. And then maybe s/he commits a third crime to cover up the second crime. With each new crime, the culprit further exposes his/herself. The culprit is usually caught committing the latter crimes while most likely that culprit would not have been caught for the first crime. I guess paranoia leads people to act unwisely abandoning the caution the culprit originally used.
So, I found this to be a decent novel, but not a great one.

(2 1/2). Rick Cahill comes off as the poster boy for the Stones classic, Paint it Black. So dark but so intriguing. This story feels like it wraps up a bunch of unsettled scenarios from prior Cahill stories, and it does it in a pretty interesting way. His flawed sense of logic makes for some scary scenes, and his inability to let go of his own dark side dominates. Pretty good stuff.

3-1/2 * clearly written cop plot and twists. Enjoyable narration by Eric A. Shelman. I find that revenge and salvation in the same plot, at least a strange premise., I know the definition of each and they are diametrically opposed, right? Now redemption and justness....
