The Uncaged #3

The Temple

Rate this book
Serenity must survive her role as the face of Force’s Temple…or risk losing her family forever.

Serenity is trapped behind Temple walls, now a pawn in Force’s hands. His goal is to turn her into the face of his Temple, and he hires Luc to play the role of master artisan. Ultimately, Serenity is to become Yang, the bearer of her father’s dark Temple legacy—and the training for that once again involves the whip. This time, she must use it on Bliss, her twin—the Yin to Serenity’s Yang, though Bliss is nothing but a shell, one who only knows total submission to Force’s rules.

But Serenity has even bigger problems—Luc constantly pursues her, Force thrusts suitors in her path at every turn, and she must endure grandiose exhibit viewings. Most chillingly, a series of corpses with swan symbols carved into their chests keep randomly appearing, and she doesn’t know who is involved. Serenity needs Sky now more than ever. And he will be there to protect her—no matter what it takes.

In this action-packed third installment of the Uncaged Series, will Serenity manage to survive Force and all his machinations? Or will her father and the Temple finally be her breaking point?

The Jewel by Amy Ewing meets Tricks by Ellen Hopkins in this gritty Young Adult Dystopian that tells of a fear-inducing future where the world of sex trafficking has become a social norm and where woman aren't treated as humans and are no safer than they were than they were in The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. The Temple is book three in The Uncaged Series by Emily Shore.

Emily used to be the good little church-going girl who snuck peeks of smutty romance at the bookstore. Now, she proudly writes smut and has forsaken the religious cult of her past. Emily includes a trauma-healing theme loosely based on her own experiences in all her work.

In 2020, Emily found her voice while writing dark fantasy romance. In 2021, she rebranded on Kindle Vella and has been a Vella bestseller for two years. Her writing always features enemies to lovers with heroines who don't need a sword to be strong, monsters and villains with "burn the world for her" vibes, and trauma healing.

Emily's bestselling books on Kindle Vella include: The Sacrifice, Bride of Lucifer, Bride of the Corpse King, Courting Death and Destruction, and Grymm Beauty. An abuse survivor and trained advocate, Emily has worked as an awareness speaker all over Minnesota. Identifying as bisexual and feminist, she loves to showcase sex and kink positivity and normalized LGBTQIA+ inclusivity.

When not writing enemies to lovers, Emily is addicted to the Enneagram, rewatching Schitts Creek, cuddling with her kitty, and spending time with her online sisterhood where she can exercise her big empath heart. She lives in Saint Paul with her husband and two daughters—one is a budding author.

FUN FACTS ABOUT EMILY:
This list gives you a little peek into the crazy brain of this author. If you find yourself relating to any of these, reach out to me on any of my pages and we shall go forth and bond!

1. I am an extrovert with unlimited psychological energy. (I also stockpile Pinterest memes!)
2. HUGE Enneagram fan, so if you want to connect more, prepare to be asked to take the test so I can better understand you and speak your love language . (My tritype is 847 - which makes me Deadpool's female twin!)
3. My favorite authors on the YA side are Laini Taylor and Susan Dennard. My favorite authors on the adult side include: Amelia Hutchins *Queen*, Pam Godwin *Goddess*, and Elayna Gallea.
4. Up until 2020, I used to write strictly YA. I had a major identity transformation, wrote three books in three months (back to back), found my true VOICE, processed my identity, healed from past trauma, and came out as bisexual. Now, I love writing spicy fantasy romance and bridging the gap between the heterosexual and queer audience by offering them badass heroines taking on the dark alphas and literally *everyone* in my books is queer and polyamorous because #whychoose? It's normalized, it's respected, and it's beautiful!
5. My favorite film is The Princess Bride.
6. I am Disney-obsessed, especially Marvel and the Princess movement.
7. I started writing The Aviary over twelve years ago after a visit to Germany and learning about the Red-Light District. These books were evidence of my sexuality screaming to be let out.
8. My favorite Broadway is The Phantom of the Opera followed closely by The Scarlet Pimpernel.
9. Songs to describe me: Unbreakable by Fireflight, Warrior by Demi Lovato, Ready or Not by Brit Nicole and Lecrae, Speechless by Naomi Scott (Aladdin), Show Yourself by Idina Mendel (Frozen 2), This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, and The Sound of Silence.
10. I’m a mom to two little girls. I fight for a better world for them and for myself.

Half way...

Half way through the series, (assuming it is just the 5) and I’m still enjoying it. I’ve yet to find the weak book in the link (and there often js one, so I’m hopeful that Emily Shore has escaped this!)

I don’t want to reveal too much, but the labelling of each chapter with the name of the character telling that part of the story is very helpful for a tired ol’ girl like me!

Serenity has just walked away from a harebrained scheme that got her captured. She then proceeds to repeat this, again bringing Luc, Sky and Neil into her chaos. She meets her father and sister and is briefly reunited with her mother and adoptive father. The books are unfortunately not getting any better.

Serenity and her accomplices are trapped in the Temple. Force, her father, knew her as soon as she tried to enter with a disguise. Now this is high tech, so I was impressed that he figured it out. He keeps Serenity locked up until her disguise wears off, but she is not alone. Sky has managed to infiltrate the Temple and is figuring a way to get her and her family out.

In this book, we get multiple POVs. Past books were from Serenity's POV and a little of Luc's. Here we get into Bliss, Serenity's sister's head, and a little from Luc and Sky as well. I liked that the author gave us more POVs. I think understanding how everyone is dealing with Force's manipulation is important. Oh, and Bliss. That girl had been abused and used since she was 7-8 years old. Never good enough for Force, who is still obsessed with the girls' mother and now obsessed with having Serenity be his successor, he threw Bliss to the wolves. She has totally shut down in order to survive. Like her mother before her, Force has abused her and left scars as a reminder. She starts to thaw a bit towards the end and I worry what that means for her in the next book.

Like Jade at the Garden, Force begins to train Serenity to take his place. In order to protect her mother from Force, Serenity and Bliss take on his abuse. Serenity is put in a situation where she has to harm her sister in order to play Force's game.

As we near the end of the book, it looks like Serenity and her crew are almost ready to take Force down. Serenity thwarts Force one more time which leaves us with him sending her down a flight of stairs. Sky jumps to her rescue, with what I am sure will be dire consequences in the next book.

This book held my interest even though there was not a lot going on compared to the previous 2 books. I think adding Bliss' POV, and showing flashbacks to her traumatic childhood, helped to build the world of the Temple and let the reader know how truly evil Force and this society is. Add in some intrigue with girls turning up dead, and this was a solid installment in the series.

Decent sequel

Like the other books, this third installment dives more into the themes of human trafficking, rape, sexual assault, abuse, and torture. Each book has similar themes but different levels of exposure to each theme. This one dives more into the sadistic nature of Director Force and we finally get to meet Serafina and Bliss/Mara!

A lot of the newness of this series has worn off. I know what to expect with museums and the thought process behind the directors’ behaviors. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m reading through these books fairly quickly or something else, but this almost seems repetitive of the prior books in terms of how events play out.

Emily Shore has introduced us to a story with various points of view. We bounce around mainly between Serenity and Bliss but occasionally there’s a couple more people we hear some inner dialogue from. I didn’t mind the switching back and forth between POVs, but I’m hoping we get some more action in the next book. I wish we could give half star ratings (if we can I haven’t figured that out yet) because I would give it a 3.5/5.

Each book, a new location, new dangers...I'm still interested, though. Maybe try to find a different way to describe things than talking about 'your butterflies.'

Also, what's up with so-called trilogies being 4 or more books? Come on, be honest...

Like all too many series, each book became more of a disappointment. While it was well-written, this book paled in light of its precursors. I probably won’t read the 4th book; I don’t want to be disappointed by the ending.

Finally at the Temple, Serenity is reunited with her mother and the sister that she never knew about. But, it isn't your typical family reunion. With Force controlling everything and everyone, Serenity needs to find a way to make him happy, stay true to herself, and save those she loves. In a world that is beautiful and every fantasy within reach things aren't what they seem. The horror of what her sister has had to endure is outrageous. Being born only to serve men's fantasy's. Will Serenity lose herself or be able to finally set them free. These books are written in a way that informs you of a lifestyle that nobody wants to think about but, with enough fantasy and fiction that should be on a movie screen. Vividly written and will draw you in from the beginning.

Less impressed with every sequel. The author seems to have made the world less dark and scary for women now in this book. Not for anything that the main character has done. Serenity is not growing during this book, she is still about the same as previous books. Not exactly sure when she chose Skylar over Luc or even told Luc that she had chosen. I think a page was missing maybe? Or was there a reference I was supposed to infer? Of course now that Luc cannot have Serenity he is going to fall for her sister.

I could go on. For now I'm taking a break before deciding to continue with the series. I've become disillusioned.
