First Light, the extraordinary story of a young American woman's involvement with the famous Te Maori exhibition, has become a classic in the few years since its publication. Now due to public demand it is available again.Te Maori was, and still is, much more than just another exhibition, and First Light is much more than one woman's fight to do her job. It is the story of an awakening, of a love affair with a people and a culture, that is as relevant today as when it was first written.

First Light by Carol O’Biso
As a Maori woman who was in her thirties when the Te Maori Art exhibition was staged across America in the 1980's, I was interested to reread this account by Carol O'Biso as she was well-known by our people for the work she did in transporting, installing and returning this monumental exhibition to different parts of America and back. Many of the elders who accompanied these artifacts are no longer with us but were well-known and highly respected before, during and after that time. I remember one of our kuia from Tainui who was assisting with the exhibition when it was returned to Auckland, talking to me about Carol. That was the first time I read Carol O'Biso's First Light.
There was a great resurgence in the world of Maori art, in all its expressions, after this exhibition. Carol O'Biso was probably the only person who could have seen it through.

I adored this book, Carol OBiso manages to capture that incredibly unique emotion that happens when non-Maori encounter the Maori world and really get what it has to teach us. This is a very special story, told very well.
