My Only Sunshine

Rate this book
On a cold morning in late fall a girl was found running down the street, naked and screaming. She had been missing for over a month.

It’s been 5 years since that day and 18 year old Taylor Cormier may have escaped her captor but never escaped the trauma. Jacob, the man who took her was never caught. Her life could have been lots of things, but instead it’s mace, house alarms, and secret work schedules. She remembers very little of her abduction, what she does remember is confusing and unreliable. The one thing she does know; she knows with absolute certainty, she will never be safe.

Despite this knowledge she wants what all girls entering senior year want. To be included, to be liked, to be normal. So, when her old group of friends begin to talk to her again and the new charming boy in school shows interest. Taylor begins to hope that her senior year could be different.

That is until another girl goes missing and Taylor’s life erupts into chaos once more. Through the course of the investigation, for the first time, Taylor feels hampered by the holes in her memory. With the help of her therapist she begins to recover memories of her abduction, hoping to uncover new evidence that will help the police, find the girl, find Jacob or both.

This ended up being a great story! Tropes that litter the thriller genre seemed to crop up at the beginning, but tropes are tropes for a reason, and good characters and plotting redeemed it! The author isn’t afraid to go to dark places and get graphic without being gratuitous.

description

The predictability was reserved for character reveals, not plot, and surprisingly once I reached those reveals it didn’t bother me! The plot did surprise me, as did the likability of our main characters. I’d definitely recommend.

My rating? Four bags of popcorn and a coke👏🏼

„It wasn’t curiosity that killed the cat, it was predictability.“

Taylor was kidnapped when she was 13 and escaped. Her kidnapper was never caught. Now, 5 years later, another girl has disappeared and the police suspect the same man who kidnapped Taylor was behind it. Taylor can only remember small fragments of her abduction due to the severe trauma she suffered. She feels guilty and desperately wants to help find the kidnapped girl and therefore starts a trauma therapy to get her memories back bit by bit.
At the same time we follow the view of a police officer working on the case.

The book was very exciting, I couldn't stop reading until late into the night. I also loved the characters. The ending was unfortunately a bit messy and over the top, therefore 4 stars, nevertheless very good book by a debut author.

I love the idea behind this story - what if a girl who has been abducted is able to escape, but the bad guy is never caught? How does she attempt to move on knowing he is still out there? I've read a few books with this premise because it really intrigues me. This was good, creepy in parts - I'll definitely never be able to hear "You Are My Sunshine" without getting chills anymore. It would probably translate really well into film - maybe not a blockbuster hit, but at least a super creepy Lifetime movie!! I enjoyed my time reading it, but I just felt like something was missing. I care enough about the characters to continue on with the series, so I'm hopeful that it will all come together when the series is completed!

Loved the book. Twists and turns all over the place. Kept my attention the whole way! I lost a lot of sleep because I didn’t want to put it down! And couldn’t wait to pick it back up. Entertaining and gripping! Cannot wait for the next book by M.J.Fleming!

It was a good idea that could have been executed a lot better. It didn't feel like the author built the characters that well therefore I felt it was very obvious who the bad guy was (his name was a big give away) which isn't what you want for a thriller.

I think this book was extremely captivating. Being from central Massachusetts, the towns and localities felt eerily familiar and made this read even more creepy. The characters and plot development were truly gripping and I was completely hooked until the very last page.

HONESTLY A WHOLE LOT OF HOOPLA FOR NOT A LOT OF CLIMAX.

PREMISE: As a child Taylor was kidnapped and held hostage experiencing abuse of all forms. In the present she is now free (though is she really?). Taylor only remembers about 20% of what happened while going through the abuse she experienced and now, with another child being kidnapped (presumably by the same guy) Taylor wants to work at remembering every vital detail knowing that somewhere there might be a clue that helps them to find the currently kidnapped girl. But she also feels like she's being watched. Is she free, or is her kidnapper just bidding his time?

THOUGHTS: This book was tough for me to get through. Not because of the subject matter, but because it's a book that feels like it's leading up to something all the way through. I nearly DNF'd this book because nothing was happening and was even prepared to consider it a mis-genered hard-hitting contemporary. But then the ending happened. Keeping it spoiler free: 1) We get a reveal in the climax, but I'd already suspected it so it didn't shock me at all. The rest of the climax was rather anti-climactic for an Adult Thriller. Wasn't worth the read for me. Merphy Napier narrated the audiobook and it must be said, she did a good job. I like her as a narrator and this review is not in any way a slight on Merphy. I just didn't find the book "thrilling" enough for me. Or, more to the point, it felt like a "thrilling fake out" than actually thrilling which makes for a cheap-thriller to my mind. There's meant to be a book 2, but this one was released years ago so I don't think there will be. Even if there was I wouldn't read it.
If you're not triggered by abuse and you want a "soft thriller" this may be enough for you. But I like for my thrillers to be thrilling and this one just wasn't.
The 3 Star rating comes in the form of 2 plot points:
1) The memories she gets back.
2) The Climax (as soft as it was it was better than the rest of the book).

3 Stars
xoxo.

This was a very compelling story. I didn't want to put it down. All the characters were well written and very likeable. I liked how we see the effects from Taylor's kidnapping. It felt very authentic and reasonable.

The ending was a little bit hard to believe. It also felt a little too rushed. A lot of things happen in the last 30 pages and I would have liked to see a little more of the fallout. I wanted another chapter to see how Taylor copes. Hopefully we will get to see that in Part 2.

The twist I saw coming from early on put it didn't take away from the story.

Overall, a great quick read with lovable characters.

Suspenseful - Definitely Kept My Interest. I Want More !!

I am usually a 2-3 book at a time reader. Putting one book down and picking up another taking my time getting through each one in rotation. That was simply not possible with this story. I had to know how it ended, although at times I was pretty terrified of what would be next. Amazing that this is the author's first attempt at publishing. Can't wait for her next book and am hoping this particular story has a Part II. Highly recommend !!

I loved this book! It's not often that I find a book I just can't put down, but this was one of them. I was hooked from the first chapter and it held my attention until the last page. It's well written, engaging, and suspenseful with some unexpected twists. A must read and I can't wait for the sequel!

Good read, small spoiler in review

Book was a good read, held my attention through most of it. Good story, somewhat predictable, some parts a little unbelievable (in regards to quick bonding with Patrick and only week of training) Will continue to read series.

Its been a while since I have finished a book in one sitting. My Only Sunshine by M.J. Fleming is really engrossing.
The set up of the story and the way it kept building was interesting.
The build up and the plot of the story started off really well, while it played into some well- known thriller tropes - it seemed to take a different direction.
Towards the end is where the author lost me, I felt that there was a lot of exposition and the pay off was disappointing.
James's ending was unnecessary and added nothing to the plot overall, if anything it took away from the plotand the climax - Peters true identity was easy to spot from a mile away.
MJ Fleming created some great characters, but only paid attention to Taylor in fleshing her out as much as she could. I felt that we could have gotten more from the ending. It was a bit abrupt and didn't fit within the larger narrative of the novel as a whole.

REVIEW
I liked the plot and the concept and definitely want the sequel. I've got a feeling which character might play a big role in that one. I have to say though: the final twists weren't that surprising to me. I liked the dynamics between the characters a lot and the fact all of them had a clear personality or were put down on the page in the way we were supposed to see them.
There was a constant tension throughout the book, but for me, it lay more in the place of wanting to know how Taylor would react to regaining her memories and I have to say: it was disappointing.
I've known multiple people when they went through EMDR therapy (a treatment for PTSD where patients relive their traumatic experiences to make them less intense) and those people could be emotional wrecks and tired for up to a week after. Barely able to go to school because they would be reliving parts of the memories in school and definitely not able to go work. And this was when remembering the past and reliving it. Imagine how intense it could be when memories came back to. It felt so off Taylor went to work afterward and she felt incredibly stoic about the actual memories most of the time.
I also came across several wording issues or sentences that showed misunderstanding and/or ignorance from the authors perspective. For example:
The media is like a child with ADHD who has been given far to much sugar and put into a room full of toys.

This was placed after a sentence and a couple of scenes where the media were incredibly obnoxious to put it into context.
Factually this isn't correct since sugar doesn't make children hyperactive (only when the parents believe it does). On top of that does this paint ADHD in a bad light, when we really don't need that, it already gets way too much slack as is. It also shows a great misunderstanding or ignorance in the knowledge of what ADHD actually is and the fact it doesn't only make you hyperactive. This sentence still bugs me since I do have (mostly) inattentive ADHD.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-nPM1_kSZf91ZGkcgy_95Q
Go here for more information. Ignorance is no reason to write something like this, educate yourself before using a neurodevelopmental disorder in a random sentence.
On another note, there were quite a few grammar, spelling, and interpunction errors that would've been taken care off with a good grammar checker (think of the extension/program Grammarly, even it this most likely is a Dutch thing. It works perfectly for weeding out mistakes like the ones in this book).
I also want to make a short mention of the formatting and what felt like random POV jumps in the story. This was solely an issue for being in the middle of a POV and then switching in the next sentence without any clear indication the switch would happen. This could happen multiple times on one page, which creates a bit of a jarring read and could've been helped with slightly different formatting and maybe putting the POV's in a slightly different order.
In other words: the books needed several more rounds of editing with possibly several different editors or one who can do multiple different kinds of editing (which could've possibly helped develop more tension and putting in slightly more foreshadowing in the story as well). This happens more often with indie authors, but I've never seen it happen this much. Two times in the span of just over one page is too often (this happened once, not the entire time).

All in all, I can see why someone would love this book and be surprised by the twists at the end. That someone just wasn't me. Give this book a try though, if the premise intrigues you. I might not give it a very high rating or a raving (glowing) review, it definitely was a fun way to spend my time.

I read this book while on vacation. It was very good. I read for pleasure. I care if it is well written and keeps my interest. Nothing too trashy or vulgar is a bonus. This book definitely kept my interest and was well written. Intimate scenes were well written, appropriately discreet and the language was fine and appropriate to the characters. My only issue came with the ending. Keep in mind I was finishing the book while packing up from vacation and heading home. I had a lot of starts and stops while finishing the last chapter or two. It would have been better to hold off until we were on the road, but I was too anxious to know how it ended. So without giving away the ending, a couple minors characters make a cameo appearance in the final scenes. Why they appear wasn't really elaborated on, that is a minor thing. One pretty central character leaves the story (trying not to spoil anything) and it's never really dealt with by the main character. Another main character has life altering experience and that hardly gets a mention. I wish those 2 situations had been developed. Sometime on the drive home I did remember that this was the first in a series. So hopefully those characters could be brought up again at the start of the next book. I told myself I needed to reread the ending without interruptions; but since I've now loaned my copy to a friend to read, it probably won't happen. I will definitely read the next book. I'm excited to know where life takes this strong young woman. Great job MJ Fleming, keep writing!

This is the first self published book I read in my life - at least as far as I remember.
It's always easy to criticize other people's work but personally, it felt like reading a fan-fiction. Besides a few typos and missing punctuation marks (which is a pet peeve of mine in every publication - books, newspaper articles...) the story had a weird pacing. Suddenly people had feelings without any real build up. After the second half, I was invested in the story line but still it was weird to read.
For example, normally parents in YA books are addressed as Mr. and Mrs. Something but in this book the narrator used the first name of almost every person. Because of this adults never felt like adults and Taylor's mother could have been her sister of friend as well.
Many things were really predictable () and some things just felt unreal (like the chain of demand within the police station).

The story has potential and as mentioned before, I enjoyed some of the reading. However, I think the way the story was told would have been much better with professional supervision from a larger publisher.

Heyo I'm feeling a bit tired and not inspired to write a review but also I didn't want to give this book 2 stars and not explain anything because to be fair I don't think it's a bad book, I think it's mostly me.

So positives : I thought the main character was smart. Also her mom. I think their relationship was very cute and loving and they were both mature about stuff. They made decisions that made sense to me.

Negative : This is a self-published book and I thought it lacked a little bit of editing. I also thought one plot twist was too easy to guess so the reveal made me feel nothing.

Oh man oh man oh man what a great book!
I listen to this book through audible because my favorite booktuber Merphy Napier recommended it and to top it all off she is the narrator. And man I’m telling you it did not disappoint!
I did figure out the twists of the book BUT that didn’t make this book any less excited! The ending was fantastic!
You as the reader get pretty attached to taylor the main character. And the Irish security guy (can’t remember his name) man Love Him! I hope part 2 has more of him in it!
Merphy does a wonderful job narrating the book and I’ll be one of the 1st Audible purchasers when the 2nd part is released!
A must read right now!

I think this book deserves a review even though I did not love it, but I loved the idea. First, the story had a painfully slow start followed by a very exciting middle. I feel everyone but me loved the ending. I hated it. Not only the twist was obvious to me (I don't mind this that much), there were gaps the size of contents and unbelievable events. And that epilogue, which is of course unbelievable and serves only to inform us that there is a sequel. This book could have been great. I really really loved the idea, and I will try other books by this author, but I don't think I will read the sequel.

Huh. This is a hard one to rate. I really enjoyed the first 90% of this book. The characters felt so real. The plot of Taylor trying to heal through her trauma was very interesting. I compulsively read this. It was hard to put down. But the end… it wasn’t at all surprising to me. I’m so disappointed! When the “reveal” happened I was like DUH! I couldn’t believe that was really it because it was so freaking obvious!

Slight spoilers:

Also, Jacob was so so dumb. The plan that Taylor came up with? The fact that it worked, no problem? Unreal. I mean Jacob was this master of deception. He fell for the dumbest plan ever. I’m at a total loss for words. Man I’m disappointed.

I could not put this book down. I read it in 2 days! I picked it up after meeting the author at an author reading. I love supporting local authors so I decided to give it a go and it did not disappoint! It’s a story of survival and strength and the pursuit of normalcy after a girl (Taylor) was abducted, held captive and assaulted for 40 days. The fear that her abductor is coming back for her, since he was never caught, consumes her and she fights to regain her life. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Will he come back, will she survive? I can’t wait for the sequel!

Loved this story so much. I think the main character's trauma was incredibly well done. And overall I enjoyed the relationship dynamics. There are some nitpicks I have with the writing and I found the story to be very, very predictable. However that had no effect on my enjoyment. I love this main character and this story is so relatable if you are an abuse victim. I was fully engaged the whole way through. So much so that I missed my bus stop because I was so into the ending!

This book was equally creepy and intriguing. The MC is unable to remember a lot of her trauma and is attempting to get her memories back to help a little girl who had been taken, and they think it was the same person. Eventually she is able to retrieve her memories but now the child thief is after her again. It was a little predictable but I liked the ending, the pacing was great and I loved the audiobook narrator 😁

This could have been really formulaic and predictable. Instead it was really gripping and I didn't guess the ending despite having read an awful lot of thrillers.

Both POVs used in the book were equally as good and I thought the author dealt with the effects of trauma in a way I found interesting.

Three strikes and I gave up only seven chapters in.

The book needs an editor. There were so many typos and grammatical errors that it was distracting.

The writing was also clumsy, the worst being head-hopping and POV errors all over the place. It made it impossible for me to connect to the characters.

When the swearing also started amping up, I called it.

MJ Fleming did an amazing job with their debut novel My Only Sunshine! This book enthralled me from the start and did not disappoint at any turn. The characters were well developed and it keeps you guessing until the very end. Loved all the twists and turns. It is such a realistic psychological thriller and was clearly very well researched. Can’t wait for the sequel!
