WARNING: This title contains explicit sex with a hero whose torment equals that of Jane Eyre’s Mr. Rochester and a heroine who has the courage to save his soul, despite the fact that his love could be the death of her.
When Constance Rockwood Athelson, Viscountess Westbury, hides her face to attend the Black Widows Ball, she never expected to find erotic passion in a masked stranger’s arms. The torrent of lust isn’t enough to drown out her dubious “gift” for seeing visions and talking to the dead. Terrified of being found out, she secures a position cataloguing archaeological artifacts for the Earl of Lyndham—where she encounters a ghost begging her to break a curse plaguing his family.
Before his mysterious lover disappeared, Lucien Blakemore was tempted to throw caution aside. Yet he knows one taste of love will unleash the curse that drove his father and brother to murder their wives. When he returns home empty-handed and empty-hearted, he’s shocked to discover his new assistant is the goddess who fled into the night. But could her presence be part of a murderous plot to unearth the location of a secret Egyptian tomb? The answer—or his doom—lies behind the desire shining in his seductress’s eyes.

Well, I wanted to add another book to my ghosts shelf, so I'm glad I read this.
I really liked this book. The mystery and intrigue were very good. For a minute or two, I was even scared and was like oh, I'll just finish reading this in the morning! But no, I stayed up so late, till 4 am or a little later, to finish this book. I also really liked the epilogue.
The characters didn't really talk about their pasts too much (normally this bothers me in most books), but I didn't really see where they would have done it here. And I didn't really need all the talking, getting to know you in this book that I need with other books.
Also, the sexual tension was good.
I LOVED Jamie, Constance's son (from her previous marriage), and would love to have his own book. The name Jamie is so hot too, it's good for love scenes. I may think this way because of Outlander...
Is the ability to see and talk to the dead or seeing into the future a curse or a blessing? Constance Athelson, Viscountess Westbury knows no difference because her family has always had special abilities. At a masquerade ball she meets a stranger, although is is Lucien Blakemore, Earl of Lyndham and has a passionate one night affair with neither knowing who the other was. Lucien has his own ghosts with a curse that has been on his family and is wary of love. This is truly a Gothic style romance which I love and has a little of it all. Murder, mystery, suspense, strong emotions and wonderful characters. As Lucien and Constance meet again, the passion is still strong but can they help each other find true love? As with all of Monica Burns stories, you will glued to the pages and ready to read the next book in this series!!
I didnt feel invested in hea of the characters. The repetitive musings of Constance and Lyndham was irritating. The book could have used a good round of editing. The story was a bit unbelievable and the heroine needed to grow a backbone alot earlier in the book. Despite all that the book had its moments...and was readable.

The members of the Rockwood family have the distinctive feature of having unusual gifts, and for Constance it’s having visions on events past or to come, and being able to speak with ghosts. So when after an affair with a stranger at a masquerade ball she has a vision of a double murder, she flees to the keep of an earl just coming back from Egypt for a job she thinks safe. But the earl and the stranger are one, and the mystery of her vision, and her employer, are going to disturb her.
I really like Constance, she’s decent, sensible, and endearing. I found that her reactions toward her gift logical for the period, even if she is at times quite curt with her son with the appearance of his own gift. I liked how she evolves and learns to accept and assert herself how she is. Lucien is harder to like because he’s quick-tempered, jealous, and I found illogical that he can believe in the curse on his family but not in Constance’s abilities. On the other side with the shock he suffered with his parents’ death when he was young we can understand that he’s not reasoning logically. In his need to protect himself and Constance he’s at times boorish and hurtful, but once decided I liked how he makes amends.
The novel begins with a sex scene, and we could think there would be a lot, but in the contrary they are not numerous. However I thought they were steamy and very well written, and through the all story we feel the attraction and sensuality burning between the characters. I just regret that they both tend till the end not to communicate enough and jump to conclusions, even is fortunately in general they don’t stay long on a misunderstanding.
The secondary characters each bring little plus: we see the most Constance’s son, and Lucien’s niece and grandmother, but also one of his friends who’s courting Constance and brings out his jealousy, thereby feeding his belief in the curse.
The plot around the curse is quite well thought, and it’s revealed little by little, through Constance’s different visions and her conversation with the ghost of Lucien’s brother. All the elements end up fit together. I was suspecting the truth but I was surprised all the same by the solution of the story.
Second volume in the Reckless Rockwoods series, but readable as a standalone, Dangerous allowed me once more to discover an author I didn’t know. I’ve seen that for this reedition the author added the epilogue, and as I liked this end a lot I’m pleased not to have read the novel when it first went out in 2009.
As with all members of her family, Constance has special abilities. She can glimpse the future and speak with the dead. But this becomes both a blessing and a curse when she meets Lucien. With a family history of murders and betrayal, Lucian has sworn not to love another for fear of following down the same path of lunacy and destroying his lover. Vowing never to give his affection to a woman in order to protect her, he is helpless against Constance and constantly wages a battle between his heart and what he believes is right in order to protect her.
This book starts off hot.
Any historical romance that can have a passionate sex scene between the main characters within the first chapter, minutes after meeting one another, has got to be good!
Not only are the love scenes between Lucien and Constance sexy and steamy, but the underlying gothic story of murder and lunacy and the Indiana Jones-esque search for ancient antiquities gives the story a unique feel. It is dark and broody, romantic and mysterious.
The main characters were both smart, solid and likeable, if both tortured by their own demons, and the supporting characters were all interesting and perfectly easy to envision.
I did feel moments of frustration when reading this book due to conflicts which could have been resolved with a simple conversation. Things that were incorrectly overheard. People being too stubborn or selective in their beliefs. For example, Lucien was suspicious of Constance’s gift, but perfect willing to believe in a family curse. This type of drama made the story seem to drag at times, even though it was interesting and wonderfully told.
If you are looking for a solid mystery and a darkly gothic love story, Dangerous is for you.
This is an erotic historical novel involving a cursed hero, a haunted castle, and a heroine who is in the hero's castle to catalog his egyptian artifact collection.
I really enjoyed the imagination behind the hero's story as well as many of the ancillary characters. However, the overwhelming passion from the very first moment the two main characters meet as well as their helplessness against their own passion is not to my taste. I tend to like romances and erotic stories where the characters feel the passion but their actions are based on some considerations other than their helplessness in the face of their attraction. I also felt that some of the writing at the mechanics level had some repetitious grammar structures that a little more editing would have taken care of.
However, as I said before, I feel that the story with all the well-thought out backstory regarding the hero's curse was very intriguing.
I enjoyed the gothic aspects of this book. It may sound weird to say, but I love angsty, gothic stories. 😆 I also really enjoyed the Egyptian-related parts. Artifacts, legends, etc. The mysterious plot was fun to follow, even if guessed ahead of time. I’m always game for ghosts, visions, and the like. The drawbacks were a lot of telling rather than showing...lots of internal monologue. There was also too much secret keeping - the kind of thing where ridiculous or stupid assumptions are made and everyone is so dramatically keeping their secret that a major amount of drama and angst would have been avoided if people stopped assuming and just said what simple things they were thinking. Overall, a fun read if you do it with a bit of humor in mind 😏
This is the second instalment of The Reckless Rockwoods. Although historical romance, there is an element of the supernatural in these books. Most of the stories make mention of the Rockwoods' gift for seeing visions and ghosts.
Constance has a particularly strong gift, which is something her now-dead husband could never quite accept. When she stumbles across Lucien, passion flares between them. Then her gift shows her something troubling. When she manages to secure a position cataloguing an earl's collection of Egyptian artefacts, she is stunned to discover that the earl is Lucien. Meanwhile, Lucien is convinced his family is cursed, and he is determined to never lose his heart and bring the curse down on himself. When he discovers his new assistant is the passionate beauty he'd met earlier, he has to struggle to keep himself detached from her.
I enjoyed this book. I did like the ghosts popping by! Lucien's behaviour tended toward slightly unlikeable at times, but it wasn't too bad. Still, there was plenty of drama and steam. Overall, it was a good book.
I have never read any of Burns book but loved this book so much I purchased the 1st book in this series and if it anywhere near ad good as this one, I will purchase the other book in this series. The love story is surrounded by past murders, a believed family curse, ghosts and danger. The love scenes are beautiful and erotic. It is well written and keeps your attention. It makes you want to finish the book but I work and it took two long nights to read this nook. I would highly recommend this book.
Exceptional story and well written keeps confessing who the villains are. hope they dealt all the entrances into the castle. this story will keep you turning the pages with the gift that constance and son Jamie share . can't say say enough cut they get their HEA would highly recommend this auhor and series
This is the second in the reckless rockwoods , and what a series this is turning out to be . A beautiful story , of love and passion . Written with a sensual and caring hand this story is the result Great strong characters that will keep you reading throughout the book and want to keep coming back for more
This book was stupendous! It was like a roller coaster! There was always something going on and I couldn’t stop reading until I got to the end. This was like a Regency thriller with mystery and romance thrown in. Definitely read this book! You won’t be disappointed!
Constance and Lucien story starts with an affair. Neither knowing who the other is. But both are drawn back to each other thru circumstances of their own making. Excellent story.
I loved this book in the series. You get romance, psychic powers, and ghostly hauntings. Oh, yes, there’s also a murder mystery to solve. What else can you want? I’m now reading the fourth book and it’s just as good .
Lucien and Constance dance back and forth amidst desire, misunderstandings, and outside influences toward their ultimate goal of finding their safe place in a dangerous world.
This Victorian romance has plenty of paranormal and Gothic hints and enough heat to make it a mostly enjoyable ride. Constance is a woman who knows what she wants, but has also learnt to be comfortable with secrets. While Lucien is haunted by the tragic events of his past and has little hope for the future. Egyptology and mutual passion bring them together, but all those secrets continually threaten to pull them apart.
There were parts of this book that I really enjoyed – the ghosts, Constance’s son Jamie, the meddlesome grandmother, the dark threats closing in – but there were also parts I found less fun. Considering it’s such a big part of the plot, I found the Egyptology side of things a bit light on detail. I would have liked for Constance to have had more of a chance to shine with her knowledge and for her and Lucien to have explored their common interest a bit more.
Then again, there were many times when this book felt a little light on detail, particularly when it came to introducing things. Imogene was the biggest problem I had, in that for a long time she was just a random name that kept being thrown in without any explanation or introduction as to who she was or any curiosity as to her past. In fact the opening chapters of this book, once the initial meeting between Constance and Lucien is out of the way, tend to skip forward a lot. It might have been nice to have had a chance to get to know Constance and Jamie a bit more (how old is he anyway?), especially considering their supernatural gifts, before Lucien returns to stir things up.
Ah, Lucien. I am so conflicted about him, because on the one hand he is tortured by all the terrible deaths in his family and the curse he believes is stalking him, and on the other he treats Constance appallingly. He may have his reasons for his behaviour, but that doesn’t excuse him. Why don’t the pair of them just talk more often? I’d thought they’d solved that little issue by the end, but then along comes the epilogue and… nope, he’s as bad as ever.
Which leads me to the Gothic plot that tries to twist and turn, but in reality is obvious throughout if only the characters would use the brains they supposedly possess. All the elements are in place for a truly creepy tale. However, for me too much was revealed too early on, taking away most of the suspense and leaving me impatient when Constance and Lucien dither over the curse and their emotions and ignore the big fat clues that are pointing to the giant DANGER signs.
So it’s okay. The historical feel is nice, the characters are well enough and there’s plenty of heat to mix with the danger. A bit more detail here and there and a little more subterfuge wouldn’t have gone amiss, but it makes for an easy enough read. Probably best enjoyed on a long winter night, beside a warm fire, with the curtains drawn against a raging storm.

"This book has been previously published by Samhain Publishing, and contains an epilogue never before included with this publication."
"DANGEROUS ", is an exciting Historical Romance with Paranormal elements. It has realistic characters, a curse, a ghost or two, romance, suspense, mystery, and passion, yes, and explicitly delicious sensual scenes. The Hero, while arrogant, is suffering from a family curse, he can not fall in love, as his beloved might die. So he comes off as arrogant, uncaring and an all around arse. The heroine has a secret, she has visions. Can see and talk to ghosts. In this case, the ghost is a Blakemore ghost, begging her to help rid his family of this dreadful curse. It seems when the heir falls in love he kills his beloved. Once again, Ms Burns had written a well thought -out story with many twists and turns. Think Jane Erye. Her characters will have you absolutely absorbed, her storyline is unique, refreshing, interesting, intriguing and dare I say riveting. While, sexual expicit, the scenes are done tastefully, elegantly, if that is possible in such a case and exquisite. I enjoyed this story from start to finish. There are so many facets to this story, it's not your ordinary Historical Romance, but far more. An absolutely wickedly delicious read! A page turner and a keeper. Fans of Jane Erye, historical romance, Paranormal Romance, mystery and suspense with many facets are sure to enjoy "Dangerous ". I would encourage readers to take a step into one of Monica Burns stories, you will not be disappointed. An enjoyable and satisfying read! ! Ghostly delicious.

Constance Athelson, Viscountess Westbury, spent one night in the arms of a stranger but quickly ran away after seeing a disturbing sight when touching him. You see, Constance "sees" things. She sees events that have occurred in the past and events that have yet to occur. She can also talk to ghosts. Knowing that the stranger will try to find her, she goes into hiding in the country working for the Earl of Lyndham. What she doesn't know is that her new employer is none other than her "stranger."
Lucien Blakemore, wants to see the progress his new employee has made in cataloguing his artifacts. He is shocked to learn that the person he hired is actually a woman. He soon learns that she is also the mystery woman that he has searched high and low for.
With a family curse over his head, Lucien can't let himself get too close to Constance. But as they spend more and more time with each other, it appears he is losing his heart. Can he break the curse that has plagued his family to find the love of a lifetime?
Loved this story!! It is a paranormal historical romance, which is not normally my cup of tea. But having been a big fan of Ghost Whisperer and Medium, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The attraction between Constance and Lucien was red hot! Definitely a steamy read!
I always love a good mystery added to my romance stories and Burns did not disappoint! Definitely a must read!
Thanks go out to Samhain Publishing via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.
This is my kind of book. Bring on the heroes, heroines and Ghosts. Monica has a grand story line going here. There are more twists and spoilers than you can imagine. Constance has "The Sight". She is a widow. She and her late husband dealt with Egyptians relics until he died of dysentery. Enter Lucien. He is terrified of a family curse. Spoiler. He needs someone to catalog his fingings. She gets the job but neglected to say she is a woman. Spoiler. Lucien lost his brother Nigel, his wife and parents to murder/suicide. Then the ghosts show up to show the dead were murdered by someone else. There are spoilers from here on out. If you like adult reads, the paranormal and old relics then this is the book for you. This is a very busy book. Please don't let this story get away. Enjoy your reading! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.
Constance Athelson, the heroine has the ability to see things that others can't. Constance is wanting to be employed by the hero. Lucien Blakemore. Constance wants to help in cataloging his collection of Egyptian art and antiquities She has one night with Lucien Blakemore and with that night she knew if she was to have his love/heart then she would have to clear his past. This story has a little of everything, love, romance, suspense! This was first publish in 2009 and now re released! Which I am happy about, since I missed this one the first time around!! Good read and glad to have this book. I hope that you will enjoy it too!
After an accidental anonymous liason with a stranger, who later tries to find her, Lady Constance Westbury flees from London to take a job for the Earl of Lyndham. Constance was trying to forget him, and the bloody premonition she had while with him. But where she ends up is the one place she didn't want to be. Lucien Blakemore, Lord Lyndham, thinks the men in his family are destined to kill themselves and the one they love, so he refuses to place himself or any woman in that place. But can he resist the pull that Constance exudes. This book has love and mystery and ghosts. It is a great read.
Monica Burns writes lush historical romance. Her stories perfectly capture the emotions of all-consuming lust and passionate love combined with a page-turning story that engrosses until the very end. She’s an underrated and underappreciated author who writes beautiful historical romantic stories.
This story has elements of both history and the supernatural. Like Katharine Ashe’s Captive Bride and These Haunted Hearts by Anna Campbell, they are stories of both mystery and romance.
The atmospheric feel of this novel really appealed to me. Being a fan of traditional gothic stories, I appreciated that aspect as well as the slight paranormal influences and Egyptian folklore.
Lucian's elderly grandmother was an unexpected bonus. Her immediate appreciation for Constance combined with her kindhearted scheming to get Lucian married worked well and against the usual cliched tropes. I think her personality and side story made the book.
The murder mystery was fun as well and kept the plot interesting. All in all, I really enjoyed this book by Monica Burns.
Oh my goodness. This was the first book I have read by Monica Burns. It will not be my last.
This book is great. It is the perfect mix of mystery, love, ghosts, and amazing characters. I love a good mystery within a romance novel and this one did not disappoint. I was still trying to figure it out to the very end and then was pleasantly wrong. It was a great read. I did not want to put it down!
Better the second read than the first! My top score of 5 fingers up and 10 toes for this historical, "PULL THE FIRE ALARM" sexy, semi-paranormal romance read! Check it out again this fall & fell in love with Monica Burns all over again! When I read my first Monica romance read, I was HOOKED (insert pompoms here) & a FAN FOR LIFE!
Great, smouldering passion and a non-traditional heroine. She's clairvoyant! (But really). Plenty of the intricacies of that condition, in the time she inhabits, get explored here. And the romance is rockin'!
The best of Burns! Dangerous was not your typical cliched HR novel. It had murder, ghosts, suspense and lots of passion. There were no virgins to be found! Intriguing secondary characters mixed in with ancient curses and Egyptian artifacts round out this well-written novel,
