The Monarch Mission Files

The Monarch Mission Files: Conspiracy

Rate this book
Mari Yosoto has been keeping a dark and dangerous secret from everyone for the past three years. No one would believe her anyway, her ex-fiancé had seen to that. Instead of wallowing in misery, she stays busy, shuttling cargo to the Moon and back, enjoying the easy work and time alone. An old EarthCorps acquaintance asks for her help, and Mari can’t say no, even if it means working with the ex’s former best friend.

Although Trevor Nash took the missing person’s job to help his former commanding officer, deep down he needed to see Mari again. After trying and failing to find out what happened to her, Trevor makes the best of an odd situation, hoping he can remind Mari of their budding friendship and finally get some answers. When the mission goes sideways and they find the not-so-missing girl, a centuries-old conspiracy theory comes to light and the only thing more unfathomable is learning Mari’s secret.

Together with their newly formed ragtag team, Mari and Trevor team up and undertake a mission unlike anything either of them has faced before with life-altering and possibly deadly consequences.

This is a sci-fi set in a future where humans are living on the moon, and mars. Giant corporations and governments live together, and in competition. And Mari, has a secret that has damaged her, but could do worse if found out. The story follows her and her friends, and one that wants to be more than that, as they track down a missing rich girl. In the process they stumble into a secret human experiment...the kind of thing that is illegal, but secretly wanted by all the powers. Even though this isn't a romance, it is a sub plot. This is nicely written and flowed for me, but the story was too easy. Everything was solved with little effort. The secrets did seem all that big, at least not enough to drive the story. In the end I felt like this was an act one to a larger story, which I suspect the rest of the series will be. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed this read it didn't grip me enough to continue. But if you like your sci-fi with some subtle romantic elements then this may be right up your alley.

One of the earliest memories of my childhood was the desire to be an astronaut. I always answered as such whenever an adult would ask me the silly question of ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’. There is something to the idea of being able to escape this world, literally and figuratively, to reach the stars and uncharted territory that makes my spirits soar out of this atmosphere. That dream has always burned inside me and to this day I am drawn to the skies and beyond. After reading “The Monarch Mission Files: Conspiracy” by Jenn Nixon I’ve been able to satisfy my craving for the universe for a little while longer.

Conspiracy starts off on an Earth of the future, but we’re almost immediately off to a lunar military base. From there we travel to Mars with Mari Yosoto, Trevor Nash, and a motley crew to find the daughter of a VIP. Low and behold, the original mission leads to the discovery of an epic secret, bringing the past and the present on a collision course where the result is a matter of life and death.

This story seemed right up my alley. Nixon’s words and writing style are unassuming and simplistic, meaning that anyone would be able to pick it up and delve right in. The plot to the story, while showing layers upon layers of potential, could have gone deeper. Having not read this author before I’m hesitant to suggest that this is how all her stories flow but based on the title I’d think that this book is really just one chapter of a longer and more impressive story to come.

The characters are endearing. Mari is damaged but badass; Nash is the protector of all, not just the person he’s falling in love with. Sam is a teenager with a wicked brain for tech and Kuna is the lovable brother that we wish we all had, especially when he’s cooking breakfast. I would like to see stronger character development with Mari and Nash’s relationship, and not just her protesting the sharing of secrets and he being stubbornly patient. They have to have flaws. I’d love to see how Nixon explores their flaws in the future. I’d also like more interaction between Mari and Sam, and maybe more of Sam’s backstory as well. This world has untapped potential and I’d be interested in reading how the rest of the story unfolds.

There's nothing like a good science fiction, but add bionics, new friends and a blooming romance on top of mystery, well you have the perfect storm and all that made this book great. The characters are awesome! They fit very well together and yet they are all complete opposite of each other. The storyline keeps you guessing and searching for more. I found it very hard to put this book down. And of course the cliffhanger, it could of stopped at worse spots in the last two chapters. But where it did end is enough for me to say, hurry up with the next book! If they don’t take down the ex, I’m gonna do it for them. Awesome! Awesome! Read!

Good, but dark, sci fi romance

The world building is excellent, the characters are fascinating, but the story is dark. There are moments of humor, but several of the characters are trying to put their lives back together, which doesn't make for a happy romp. But the story is a page-turner and thrilling.

The Monarch Mission Files

I enjoyed this story. I can’t wait to see the ex being taken down and the siblings rescued. The only thing that was weird was the inserted Japanese. It’s like Mari thought everyone should understand.

Slow start to a whirlwind

Mari has whole warehouses full of secrets. Enough that, added to the pain she deals with daily, she wonders how her shoulders don't drag the ground. But, an old friend just showed up with a job that could land her a lot of cash. Cash that can give her time to think, plan, hunt. Because, those secrets she has? She's ready to burn them all.

Spoilers ahead.
Ok, so this was a little dull, a lot plodding, and I had more than a few debates with myself about just putting it down. Mari seems weak at first. Nash comes off as too perfect with a savior complex. Kuna, as simply muscle. Sam, the genius hacker with too many triggers. They have what seems to be a simple mission: locate and retrieve a wayward politician's daughter. On the way there they discover some information that makes them question what they were told. Arrival brings whole new questions and secrets to light. But, actually finding the daughter? That leads to a centuries long conspiracy theory, underground agencies, a connection to her past she wasn't counting on and a really dark plot that doesn't seem to have an end. Trigger warnings for fight scenes, mental abuse, self harm, forced surgeries, pain control, and controlled breeding being discussed. I can't say much more without completely book ruining spoilers. But, just hang in there, ok? If you make it to 40%, things go from dull to full speed ahead. I'm a little curious as to where things are going to go in the next book. Two big issues were left unresolved. They're tangled in red tape, bogged by laws, and fighting ghosts. I'm not sure why they haven't released anonymous info dumps, or dropped some of the fight footage with their faces blurred but the bad guys' on full display. It would certainly muddy the waters and give them some breathing room. And they have an uber hacker on board, along with a font of knowledge encased in a person desperate to bring them down. Ack. I hope the energy that built at the end continues to the next.

Decent storyline.
Did not like any of the characters.
The repetitive dialogue between Nash and Mari was so annoying.
Happy to be done with this book.

Cyberpunk novel with a pilot being recruited for a covert operation on a martian colony. Mari Yosoto is reunited with an old friend, Trevor Nash, when they both sign on to investigate the disappearance of the daughter of a key political figure. The search takes them to the Mars colony, where they find themselves pulled into an ongoing conspiracy involving selective breeding of humans with, well, superpowers basically. As it turns out, Mari's traumatic past has left her with a set of superhuman abilities of her own.

This was a surprisingly human story, with the main focus on coping with past betrayal and the resulting trauma, and regaining the ability to trust. While Mari is the main focus, the team that comes together around her carry their own past burdens, and there is a lot of emphasis on the mental and emotional health of the characters and their support of each other. There's also a (relatively) slow-burn romance, and a couple of decent action sequences that feel more superhero comic-book than really grimdark cyberpunk.

This is fun, and the core team of characters are likeable with a good balance of competence and vulnerability.

Alright

This is an alright story but there are a lot of terms thrown in and science that don't really make much sense. The characters are kinda bland and I don't really care what happens to them. It was an alright read, but I won't be reading the next one.
