Highland Rising The House of Pendray #4 By Anna Markland ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gary Pendray has been a spy for the privy council in Edinburgh for the last three years. Then the Earl of Argyll forments an uprising against the king and Gary decides it's time to return home and infiltrate the rebel army. He just never expected to feel the feelings for a certain girl that he rescued and has now turned into a beautiful young woman.
Faith Cameron is the daughter of a man executed for treason and a mad mother who ended up taking her own life. She has been fostered into the Pendray family who are like her own family, that's how good they are to her, but she has longed for Gray's return. It hurts her to realize that she is not a suitable match for this son from a noble family. How could he want her?
The minute Gary sees Faith he is shocked. She has grown into a beautiful young woman. A woman that stirs his soul. She is all that he could ever want in a woman however there is a small problem. He has made a commitment to the daughter of his mentor in Edinburgh and he's not quite sure how to get out of that because the feelings he has for Faith he does not have for this other woman. Can love find a way to overcome the devide between them and win over the dangers and betrayals of a rebellion?
Anna Markland gives us another incredible book in the house of Pendray series. I have to admit that I have truly enjoyed every book in this series. The main characters are absolutely adorable. Faith is sweet, courageous, and so very loving. She is a lady who knows what she wants. Gary wants to settle down and have his own family, but it seems he is always working as a spy for the privy council. He thinks he will marry his mentors daughter until he is reunited with Faith and the sparks will fly. There is always a wonderful amount of historical significance in Ms. Marklands books that I honestly enjoy. Thank you Ms. Markland and I can't wait to see what you write next.
This story is set amidst the tedium of following a ragtag army in the making and acting as spies. The heroine Faith really develops and matures under trying circumstances and is a strong helpmate for Gray. I like the sweet blossoming of their love and it wonderful to visit this blended family again. This is a delightful series and I hope to read more of these books.

Gray Pendray is the hero of this story. Who is now a spy in Edinburgh for the Scottish Privy Council. Gray has a homecoming after several years to gain access and organize the rebel Jacobite army.
The heroine of this story is Faith Cameron. She has been fostered by the Pendray family since her father was an executed traitor and her mentally unstable mother committed suicide. She has been infatuated with Gray Pendray since she was a young girl and has missed him terribly. She knows nothing will have happen as he sees her as a young silly girl and he’s is from a high born family. Plus her family has a horrible stain forever, with execution and suicide in her parents background. Gray is just too good for the likes of her but she can’t seem to resist her feelings for him.
Yet as soon as Gray sees that Faith has turned into a beautiful young woman while he has been away. He is instant attracted to Faith and does not seem to mind that she finds him attractive. Yet it is during difficult times the major problem is he has already made an obligation to the daughter of his advisor counselor in Edinburgh. Is it too late before their love can even begin? Or is true love the answer during difficult times during treachery and espionage during the risks jeopardy and deception on the uprising.
Anna Markland continues her wonderful series with her fourth book of the House of Pendray series. This story has all the elements historical romance readers love. The setting in breathtaking, the characters are absolutely delightful, the dialogue is exhilarating and and plotting is brilliant. It is a quick paced, page turning, romantic adventure that includes suspense, mystery, treachery, deception, betrayal, espionage, spying, hatred of heartwarming, passion and love.

AN EXCITING NEW BOOK IN AN OUTSTANDING SERIES, BY AN ACCOMPLISHED AUTHOR
SETTING: Kilmer, Scottish Lowlands, May 9th 1685 The family of Morgan Pendray, Earl of Glenheath is again the center of the story. This time his grandson Grainger is the focus of the story. Working as a spy in Edinburgh, Grainger (Gray) returns home intending to join up with the Covenanters, continuing his surveillance under the guise of a joiner to their cause. He is to be accompanied by young Giles (the orphan Sarah took under her wing as a helper in her apothecary and then adopted when she married Munro) and Faith, one of the 4 Cameron sisters adopted by Jewel and Garnet. Off the 3 go to join the Rising, albeit as spies. CRITIQUE: I enjoyed this continuing story of the Pendray family. This is the story of the coming of age of Grainger (Gray) as he continues his covert surveillance of the Rising’s formation of an army in 1685. Against the backdrop of these turbulent times, Gray and Faith (one of the young Cameron girls adopted by Jewel and Garnet) fall in love. Their struggles of being spies of this rebellious army, while serving in it, keep the tension high, especially when Gray is severely wounded. We are reacquainted with characters from the previous stories, and see how their lives have progressed. We also learn more of this turbulent history of Scottish-English struggle for dominance in Scotland. Good storylines, honorable H & h characters, against a background of authentic history, make this a riveting story that I enjoyed.
This story is much less traumatic than the other stories in the series, which is a wonderful change. It still has suspense, intrigue, romance and angst. When Gray returns from Edinburgh after being gone for 3 years, he thinks that Faith would have outgrown her hero worship of him, but that's not the case. And when he is affected by her he shocked. Faith is anxious to see him again, hoping that she can win his heart, but soon discovers that it might be too late, he is practically betrothed to Maeghan, the daughter of his mentor. Gray is torn about what to do, he wants to marry Faith, but doesn't know if he'll be allowed to walk away from Maeghan. Soon after Gray gets home he is ordered to go spy on, then report on, The Rising forces. It's decided that Faith will accompany him on this mission, posing as his wife. Which gives them a chance to get to know each other again. Gray soon realizes that he's in love with Faith and will do anything to have her. The danger they're in worries him, though Faith proves herself to be strong and capable. Their story is romantic and sweet. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
Highland Rising is book 4 in The House of Pendray series by Anna Markland. This series explores Scottish history in the late 1680’s. Markland is a master at weaving actual historic events into the lives of her characters without taking anything away from the romance of her story. Highland Rising is a perfect blend of actual history and steamy love. Grainger Pendray is the youngest son of Morgan and Hannah Pendray (Highland Betrayal) and this is his story. I really enjoyed this book. Gray and Faith have a special relationship that weathers hardship. “...Gray, stripped to the waist, his long hair wet and broad shoulders glistening. He was Poseidon, newly emerged from the deep...It wasn’t the first time she’d seen a man’s body, and she knew men were made differently from women. But she’d never been so overwhelmingly awed by sheer masculine beauty, never felt the intense longing that threatened to consume her as she swayed like a reed in the wind.” I have truly enjoyed this entire series and can’t wait to read more of Markland’s work.
Just when I think I have read my favorite book of the series, Anna Markland gives us Highland Rising! As always her descriptive writing brings Scotland alive in 1685 with the wonderful Pendray family at the helm. Gray Pendray finally returns home after three years in Edinburgh as a spy, but unfortunately a rebellion is brewing and everyone has to be ready. What he didn't expect was seeing how Faith Cameron had matured into a beautiful lass and his attraction to her was unexpected. Faith had been in love with Gray since she came to foster with the Pendreys when she was young. Yet she knows nothing can come of it because of her background, but she cannot take her eyes off of him. It does seem he notices her now too and there are definate sparks flying. Enter a world of adventure, where there are all the amazing facets of rebellion, deception, suspense and wonderful moments of trust and love that will pull you through the pages as this author achieves effortlessly. This can be read as a standalone but you do not want to miss a moment of this profound series!!
Gray Pendray returns home after being a spy for the Scottish Privy Council when he finds out there’s a possible uprising against the king. Faith Cameron has fostered with the Pendray family after her father was executed for treason. She’s had a crush on Gray and can’t wait for him to return home to his family. Gray returns and immediately he’s drawn to Faith. He discovers the little girl he left behind has grown into a beautiful and courageous young woman. She knows she doesn’t have a chance with him since her father was a traitor and Gray has made other commitments to the daughter of his mentor in Edinburgh. I love this sweet love story of two people who find a way to bridge the differences between them and overcome their obstacles to find their HEA!!! I voluntarily read and reviewed the wonderful story!!!
Love Faith, she has been patient, is smart, strong and rises above her past. Gray is a little stubborn and isn’t ready for marriage though, or is he? These two make a great team for the rising and their adventurous and dangerous circumstances is eye-opening to them both. Great couple, I enjoyed reading their highlander story, it gripped me instantly and kept my reading it until I finished then I even wanted more, lol. This isn’t a cliffhanger, it’s just a really engrossing story that gave me that good feeling that made me not want it to ever end. Great ending to this series. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
A fantastic read and great end to the series with this final book. I felt drawn to this series but was reminded of my Scottish childhood as not only was Ayrshire the area is the area where the book was situated but it is where I was lived in 1957 but I was born and lived in Ardrosson where my father was a shutter on the railways. I also spent t many days in largs. Myself and husband have been back for many visits as I was 8 when we moved to Scunthorpe for my dad's job. It was a great book and a walk down memory lane.
I have just finished the fourth book in The House of Pendray Series. The books are well written combining well researched history with the stories of a family of mixed heritage who have shown religious tolerance and have gained from their strong sense of self worth and love that overcomes all obstacles. Anna Markland tells wonderful stories that make you want to read more.
Gray has been working as a spy and Faith has had a crush on him forever. But he really doesn't notice her until he is gravely injured and she helps to keep him alive. Some didn't think she would have a chance, especially with her father and traitor and her mom took her own life. Plus Gray was commited to someone else, not his choosing so will it work out for him and Faith.
The fourth in the series of the Pendray Series. As with the previous three this will capture you from the first paragraph . So I suggest starting it allowing ample time to finish.excellent storyline and character development. Each installment only makes the Journey more incredible. Thank you

Another excellent read from Ms. Markland. This book transports you to the camp of Covenanters who want to seize the Scottish crown from the Stuart king, and the spies planted within the camp. Non-stop action with intrigue, spies, battles, and of course, romance. I received an ARC of this book.
