Victims of an untested weapon, the Red Zone Warriors wake a century after they should have died, changed in ways no scientist could have predicted. The world is different. Their families are gone. They only have themselves to rely upon. The last thing they need is attention…

In a world where the democratic government has been replaced by big business, Friday Jones is merely a cog in a very powerful machine—until she sees something she shouldn't have. With the deadliest people on the planet out to get her, there's only one person Friday can turn to for help—the most infamous smuggler in the former United States.

Luke "Striker" Boudreaux has a dangerous secret. One that could see him and his team spend the rest of their lives as lab rats while the ruling company studies their genetics for profit. But staying under the radar becomes impossible when a naïve scientist turns up begging for help—with every Enforcement agent in the country on her tail.

While on the run together, the intense attraction between Striker and Friday grows into something more. Something meant to be. But to have any chance of a future together, they'll have to risk everything and everyone they know...

About the author

Janet grew up in Scotland but now lives in New Zealand. Among other things, she’s been an artist, a teacher, a security guard at a castle, a magazine editor, and a cleaner in a drop in center for drug addicts (NOT the best job!). When she isn’t living in her head and writing about the people she finds there, she raises two kids, one husband, and several random animals. She survives on chocolate and caffeine.

Imaginative, totally preposterous and I absolutely loved every word ! Friday might be gifted with an enquiring mind but at CommTECH she's just another faceless drone. That all changes when she accidentally sees and overhears a secret meeting. In a future were technology means Friday has a chip implanted in her brain that records everything she experiences this puts her life in danger but Friday has a plan. First she takes a poison that prevents her chip being tracked and then she seeks out a deadly smuggler to help her get away and find the antidote. Trouble is Striker isn't what Friday expected and he's about to show her just how dangerous being on the run really is !
I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this new to be author but was instantly pulled in by this book. The chemistry pulsates off the page and the almost dystopian atmosphere just added to the tension as the couple faced a journey like no other. Yes its futuristic, yes there's an almost supernatural edge at times but it's the humour that makes this stand out. Oh who am I kidding because I want a Striker of my own and I loved that he could understand Friday and her idiosyncrasies. Plus there's a supporting cast of characters that need their own happy ever after and if anyone can give them a story to remember it's clearly this author.
This voluntary take is of an advance copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair.

She's being hunted - one side wants her dead and the other wants the secrets found in the chips in her head, so Friday Jones turns to an outlaw and mercenary for help - Striker, a man with dangerous secrets. Friday is meant to just be a job, but from the get go Striker finds himself drawn to her.

Initially I wasn't sure about this but about 26% or so in to the book I found myself engaged and was so glad that I finally found some real time to sink into the read today. I enjoyed this, although I do have to say I do wish the author had given me a heroine that rambled a little less, surely there was another way to emphasise her intellect and that her brain was always sparking with intelligence/ideas - luckily it didn't drive me batty.

It's not super strong on post-apocalyptic world building - would have loved a bit more layers and depth, but the world the author has created is an interesting one, highlighting the dangers of human/corporate greed and the rush to embrace new tech.

Can see myself re-reading this at some point.

What a perfect blend of post-apocalyptic world building, comedy, great intelligence, paranormal elements, sexy romance, and edgy suspense! Striker and Friday had me from page one. Their interactions, misunderstandings, banter, attraction-you name it, they have it. And the snake...I’m dying over Sam the snake! Red Zone was like a little bit of Hunger Games/Total Recall/The Running Man...(yes, I’m a child of the ‘80’s)...pure imagination in the best way possible! I can’t wait to read the next book!

Terrible writing, about a great idea. The heroine is supposed to be clever, so it seemed the device used by the writer to make her clever was for her to ask questions... all the time! Trouble is she asked stupid questions, at the wrong time, and put other lives at risk. We are TOLD, endlessly by the H that she has a'big brain'! Well, unfortunately she lost it somewhere, because she was really stupid. At 31% I started to lose the will to live! Once again, I wonder about all those 5 star reviews, hmmmm.

This was a great Postapocalyptic/Dystopian/Sci-Fi/Paranormal romance (all in one).
Friday sometimes quickly crossed the line to stupid and did nothing but piss me off, but i loved Striker....

Welcome to the new world. Things have changed just a bit. Big Brother’s not only monitoring important things like what toilet paper you buy—it now has direct access to everything you see thanks to the mandatory implant you get at birth.

Friday Jones has seen something she wishes she hadn’t.

Now she has all kinds of undesirables after her—some to straight up kill her and others who want to steal what’s locked in her head. So, she’ll need the help of a ruthless mercenary, Striker, if she has any chance at survival.

That he’s a jerk, who she wants to punch in the face, well…a dying woman sometimes has to make tough choices.
Striker’s special abilities have kept him in the shadows for a reason. He has no interest in getting mixed up with the smart-mouthed, hard-headed women no matter how his body reacts. But then he discovers what’s in her head and all bets are off.

I received a free copy of RED ZONE (Red Zone Book 1) by Janet Elizabeth Henderson in exchange for an honest review. In a future run by corporations, Friday Jones is a drone in a genetics lab. Because Friday has recording technology implanted in her brain, she finds herself on the wrong end of a man hunt when she doesn’t even remember what she saw that she shouldn’t have. Friday takes a drug that will shut down her implants; however, that same drug will turn toxic and kill her if she doesn’t get to the antidote, which is in Bolivia. To evade the corporate hunters, to get through a toxic wasteland called the Red Zone, and to reach Bolivia, she’ll need help, so Friday reaches out to the notorious smuggler called Striker. Can Friday afford the price he’ll demand for his assistance? Running, hiding, dodging, escaping, and sexing all ensue.

I liked the story. It was pretty good sci-fi and a sweet romance. Though there were some pretty detailed sex scenes (not to my taste), the author actually continued the story after the characters started hooking up. I note this because, a lot of times, writers drop all pretense of storyline after the sex starts (soapbox) and just focus on all the different ways tab A can fit into slots A-Z. Brava, Ms. Henderson! I recommend it to readers who enjoy sci-fi romance with erotic scenes.

I really REALLY loved this book. From plot, to characters, to setting, to banter - it was all so much fun to read! I stayed up way later than I should have to finish it and have no regrets.

It's set about 100 years in the future from now, where technology and genetics are advanced to the point that they are starting to combine a bit. Normally I'm not very into futuristic books, but this one was written so that it wasn't too crazy. Yeah, of course it mentions hovercrafts and different 'futuristic' things, but not to the point that you need a glossary to keep up. And I loved how the Army team was portrayed. The references between old and new were entertaining.

The plot line itself was fantastic too. Sure, it *could* be summed up with "Get main character from Point A to Point B." But that wouldn't do it justice, now would it? There are several interesting twists and turns throughout, and even when I read the end I originally misguessed what was happening based on the facts given. I don't want to give much away, but just know that the plot was my favorite part about the book.

The characters themselves were good. I am not a fan of the Cajun accent myself, so I just chose to read Striker's lines in a different accent. :D I think he and his team were well written personality-wise. I really want to know the secrets of the rest of his team though. For Mace in particular, it's killing me. If you've read Janet's other books, Friday almost reminded me of a combo of Julia and Belinda. (Maybe she's a distant relative of the Collins family? Ha.) I would say that maybe my favorite character of all was Sam though. He made me smile and warmed my heart...like holding puppy or something would, ironically. The bad guys were just as well written. I always think true bad guys make us love the good guys even more, and that was the case here. I hated the bad ones so much! Their personalities were horrendous too.

For the romance side of it, it was pretty well done. I was more interested in the story that was unfolding than their feelings for each other though, honestly. It felt like maybe they developed that romantic feeling a little too deeply too quickly, but given their personalities I guess I can see it. Striker was the quintessential huge, dangerous, handsome male lead I like to read about in action romances, and Friday was the modern damsel in distress. She needed help, but wasn't an idiot. She knew her strengths and was willing to ask for help in what she didn't know. So I liked that relationship.

All in all, I liked this story better than any of Janet's other books (I liked the interactions in Here Comes the Rainne Again best!). And she is my favorite romance author, so that makes this one of my favorite romance stories of all time. It was a somewhat new direction for her to write in, and it really paid off in my opinion. I am really looking forward to the next one in this series, and am extremely curious who the next pairing will be.

I did get this as an ARC. The thoughts on the book are my own though; you can't pay me to lie and say I love a book if I don't. Ha!

Another reviewer said this book was totally preposterous and she loved every minute of it. I have to totally agree! The dystopic set-up is fascinating and evolves throughout the novel. Henderson does a fantastic job of unspooling the world, the villain, the paranormal aspects, just everything. The moments of humor are so funny. I immediately picked up the sequel and will look for more in the series.

My First Sci-Fi Romance!
Red Zone builds the world of the Territories, ruled by big tech companies, the coalition nations who lost the war and therefore are struggling, and the Red Zone, the wasteland left behind from a bomb that is shrouded in red mist. Striker is part of smuggling ring that can get through the Red Zone but no one knows how or why. Friday is drone in one of the big tech companies but now knows too much and is on the run.
I’ve read paranormal romances and I’ve read a coupe of fantasy romances but have always steered away from sci-fi as I’ve never been a fan of that genre in any medium, but Red Zone was the perfect blend of post apocalyptic world building, paranormal elements, suspense, and romance to keep in tuned in and turning pages!
I loved the development of Striker and Friday’s connection, Sam is freakin’ boot!, as well as the development of the larger series plot. I can’t wait to find out all the teams’ secrets and see what happens next!

I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.

Friday Jones poisons herself with Interferan-X in order to escape from CommTECH, the big brother company she has worked and lived for her entire life in the closely monitored Northern Territory. She hires a smuggler, know as Striker, to get her to La Paz, in the Coalition Countries, before the end of the five days that she has until the poison enacts and starts to kill her. In order to accomplish that, he must get her safely through the RED ZONE, which no one has ever claimed to have passed successfully. Along the thrilling, action packed journey, Friday learns of Striker's secrets and falls in love with him. Can he save her in time or will their love only endure four days?

This book is so outside any of my comfort zone genres, but I was given an advanced copy for my honest review, so I read it. And I LOVED it. It was suspenseful, sweet, sassy and sizzling. The characters are well developed and the creativity with the plot was amazing. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish this one last night, and it was well worth it - the ending was fantastic! I think if you are a fan of fantasy, romance, and thrillers, you will enjoy this read. Put it on your summer TBR list!

Red Zone by Janet Elizabeth Henderson
Red Zone Book #1

What a fun book this one was! I was hooked from the opening scene and could not put this story down!

What I liked:
* Friday Jones: strong, wise, talkative, scientist that I found thoroughly enchanting. Heart of gold willing to do what it took to be free but willing to give up her freedom for the right cause.
* Striker: I was taken with him from t he first scene…my, oh my…OH MY! I really liked this guy!
* The snake: You must read the story to know why BUT he is a charmer
* The men with Striker…hope they each get a story of their own
* The world this takes place in – built to perfection
* The dialogue
* Paranormal and sci-fi aspects
* Really all of it except

What I did not like:
* The bad guys…there were plenty of them to dislike
* Having to say goodbye to the characters and story…really wanted to keep reading

Did I enjoy this book? Yes!
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!
Would I recommend it to others? Wrote to tell my sister immediately

Dystopia done right! The world building tells the characters' story, and you never feel like you're being hit over the head with how awful the world around them is. Friday and Striker have awesome chemistry at first, and as they fall in love with each other, we can't help but fall in love with them. Their emotional tie really made the book fly by. I'm ranking this 4.5 stars because I wasn't as engaged with the baddies in the story. Fortunately, the perspectives with them were very short and there weren't a lot. Most of the narrative is Striker and Friday's story, which I really enjoyed. This is a new direction for Janet Elizabeth Henderson, and it proves she's a versatile author who can write in multiple genres. Recommended! -NetGalley copy provided for an honest review.

Red Zone by Elizabeth Henderson was such an intriguing read. I had to focus to know what was happening because this is a world like no other, and I love how the author put everything together, and how the story progressed, with it's pacing just right. I love me some sci-fi with great elements of romance, I can't wait to read more from Janet!

I'm not as thrilled by this first volume as I was by the second one. The way the heroine's mind is always working at full capacity and wandering from one thing to another even during a sex scene left me perplexed. I suppose it was meant to be funny but I just found it annoying most of the time. However the story is interesting and discovering more about the team and the universe was great.

A Diamondback with an attitude? Yes, please!

Once again, Janet Elizabeth Henderson has proven why she's one of my few auto-buy authors, pretty much no matter what genre she wants to write in.
I love her romantic supsense books as well as her rom-coms - and putting all of that goodness into a dystopian sci-fi setting works wonderfully.

Friday and Striker are awesome protagonists und had me rooting for them from page one - and let's not forget that damn snake! <3
The story delivers fast-paced action, off-the-charts chemistry between Friday and Striker, a wise- and badass team, all the feels - and it feels pretty much like a "gateway drug" for this whole new series. Can't wait for more Red Zone books!

Friday Jones is in huge trouble. With a device implanted inside her head that records everything she can see and hear, she heard something she wasn’t supposed to. Now she’s being hunted by those that will stop at nothing to make sure the information doesn’t get exposed. Luckily, she has a back-up plan in taking something that will wipe her memory clean. However, if she doesn’t get the antidote to what she takes, she can kiss her life goodbye. Yet, she needs help if she’s to escape the forces after her. Will Striker be able to help or will Friday die trying to stay one step ahead of those after her? Read More

Red Zone is a paranormal romance filled with lots of action and adventure. Microchips are implanted in everyone's brain and memories can be erased at will by those in charge. The world as we know it is left in the dust although some of the names of places and locations remain the same. There are powerful world leaders but are they looking towards the same goals or are they on different paths and at what cost to the world as they know it?

When Friday tries to get away from CommTECH where she works and poisons herself things take on a fast pace. She finds Striker, a smuggler, to help her get the antidote she needs to help her live. They have an instant connection and chemistry and he can read her mind and what's she's thinking and knows how fast her mind works. She can't seem to quiet her thoughts at all since so much of their race for the antidote takes her to places unknown to her ans she's a scientist through and through. The Red Zone that they have to pass through can't be infiltrated, or can it? And if someone does get through it and it touches them, what happens then? There are some surreal moments when Striker and his team set out to help her reach the antidote but if they do, what is the cost to them?

Striker and his team are older than they seem and the animals that affect his teammates could come into play which could put an interesting spin on things. Striker and his snake, or handbag as he calls it, have a special relationship but the snake goes one further and has a connection to Friday too which shouldn't happen. There are a lot of twists and turns to the story and lots of killings, battles and injuries. The characters have a depth to them but we don't learn to what extent in this book. There's a lot more stories to tell with the other team members and I do look forward to meeting up with them again.

Paranormals aren't one of my favorite genres but this one held my interest from the first page to the last. The story ended too abruptly for me though even with the epilogue. There is a happily ever after that was unexpected.

Ms. Henderson is a new to me author. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series as well as her romantic suspense and action/adventure books.

i'm a huge Janet Elizabeth Henderson fan and a huge Sci-Fi fan so there is no way that i wouldn't like this book, and luckily i was able to get an ARC from the author in exchange for a review

the story is set in a Blade Runner-esque world were business conglomerate's rule and follows Friday a ComTech worker who is a passive recorder(bio-implants record everything she see's and hears) who see's something she shouldn't have.
Friday takes a poison that will stop her implants from being accessed remotely but will kill her in 4 days and goes on the run.
her only hope of survival is to get across the Red Zone to La Paz(Bolivia) where she can get an antidote to the poison and get the information in her head to the right people.
to accomplish this task she needs to hire Striker an outlaw/mercenary, the only person that can get her to safety but who's team have secrets of their own that they must keep safe at all costs.

i won't go into further detail to avoid spoilers but i will say that i loved this book.
as usual Janet has created a book filled with action, suspense, excellent patter, and great humour with well developed and likeable characaters.
i'm really looking forward to book 2 and hopefully finding out if Friday is right about whether Mace's secret is related to his grumpiness.

A sci fi book (not read one in a while)
This reads a little like Johnny mnemonic and total recall.

In the future your brain let’s you download and store EVERYTHING you see and hear, and Friday overheard something that she really shouldn’t have!!! Taking a poison to stop the “downloading the hardware” in her brain, she now needs to cross “The Red Zone” to get the antidote, otherwise she’s dead in four days..... and the best man for the job is Striker.

He’s a mercenary/smuggler, and a good one, but his team have secrets and abilities that he doesn’t want found out. And helping Friday will bring both Striker and his team under scrutiny, but how can he not? The secrets that she holds in her brain are too important to ignore. And as the story unfolds, Friday becomes important to his team as well as Striker.

So what’s Friday seen? Who wants it and Friday erased?
What is the secret Striker is so hard to hide from everyone?
Will they cross the Red Zone in time?

A well thought out story, and nicely written, the characters were really well thought out. The camaraderie between Striker and his team, the chemistry between Friday and Striker, very descriptive and narrated well.
I did have a few small issues .... I felt more background was needed with Striker and his team, and maybe a little more on why the Red Zone is called The Red Zone!!!

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "RED ZONE" J E Henderson did an amazing job writing this Sci-Fi futuristic storyline full of danger, humor, intrigue, suspense, adrenaline pumping intense drama with twists that have glued to your seat.
Friday Jones is a drone that from birth had an implant in her brain that's records everything she works at COMtech big brother company monitored in the Northern Territories.
Friday accidently overhears some secrets that get recorded in her brain she takes a poison to block the tracker in her brain then arranges for a ruthless mercenary Striker to get her to La Paz through the Red Zone within 5 days or she won't survive.
Striker's looking for payment he's not interested in a woman with a say mouth but he agrees to help her with his team the adventure they take you on is so dangerous, exciting and they soon become more tbe steamy hit scenes between these two sizzle.
I just love Striker and Friday together he seems to understand her crazy tbey are great together will they through the Red Zone in time to save her you must get this book I can't wait for the next book "RED AWAKENING" I think thus should be a series and all the teams needs their own story.
I definitely recommend this book J E Henderson changed mind totally on Sci-Fi it was one of the best stories I thoroughly enjoyed.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise! I just saw the cover and, well, being a cover-lover I went for it. And "just browsing" immediately turned into reading intensely and not putting it down. This imaginative, fantastic story full of suspense, action and romance drew me in from the first page on.

I loved Friday so much, she is a wonderful character, full of quirks and when she starts to think and, yep, chocolate... I laughed so much and I mean, who could resist that talking, hitch-hiking handbag with an attitude to match its....partner's? Did I forget to mention that the talking handbag is also lethal? Well, yeah, it is. And it loves to cuddle - go figure.

Though I forgot to mention our hero, Striker. Friday and Striker are an amazing couple, you can feel not only their chemistry but even more their love right from the start. You get it, you can feel why Striker, the hard, capable Striker falls for Friday with all her quirks and her open heart who embraces everyone. At first she seems weak though the reader very soon realizes how intelligent and strong she really is, how capable and courageous. She is not fearless but no matter what happens, she pulls through, she fights, she cares even with a death sentence hanging over her head and things very soon going to hell, she still cares for others and never gives up.

Did I mention how much I loved this book?

I've read everything that I've been able to find written by Janet Elizabeth Henderson and long ago come to the conclusion that I am hooked on her writing and her characters. This newest book is no exception, even though it hits under the new paranormal genre.

This book still contains all the action that is found in her Benson Security books and the comedy (more subtle, but still there) of her Scottish Highlands books but has the added unknown of the North/Central/South America location with the futuristic techno twist. I loved it! It definitely got my scientific mind working overtime and I fell in love with Striker and Friday Jones (I even love the names).

Three days ago I received a copy of the soon-to-be released Red Zone free from the publisher in exchange for my honest review and I had a hard time putting it down in order to get anything else done, even those pesky meetings with our accountant and babysitting my Grandson. Real life can be such a pain sometimes when a person only wants to cuddle up with a new book boyfriend and explore him. Thanks for another great read Janet Elizabeth Henderson. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

This was one of those books that makes you feel everything. I laughed out loud, gasped in shock, felt my heart pick up speed as they ran, and cried when things turned sad. From the first chapter, I was plugged into what the characters were feeling. Even though their world is very different from ours, I felt like I was right there with them. I would have read this in one day, but a migraine hit me. I kept trying to see if I could read again because I was dying to know what would happen. There was plenty of action, but I didn't think it was gross or overdone in any way. The romance was quite lovely and blended well with the rest of the plot. In typical Henderson fashion, a lot of the humor is between the H and h. They are her best couple yet, and that is really saying something!
This is about the highest praise I can give a book: I almost always pick up on what the twists and surprises will be at least a couple of pages before they happen. Twice I could feel a twist coming but was completely shocked by what it was. Twice! That hasn't happened in years. So I am giving this all the stars! I recommend this book for when you want to be completely swept up in a different world.

I am a big fan of Janet Elizabeth Henderson's romantic comedy. They are everything Rom coms should be...fun, light, sexy. When I found out she was writing a sci-fi/futuristic romance, I was excited but a little hesitant. On the one hand she was combining two of my favorite genres, but on the other I wasn't sure how I would feel about her departure from the world and characters I had already fallen in love with. Turns out my fear was totally unfounded. She created a new set of characters for me to love.

It takes about 100 years in the future in a world where everything is run by corporations and big brother monitors everything. It seems a little bleak, the characters face it with humor, strength and hope. I laughed and I cried. Stiker is mysterious, dangerous, and sexy as hell. Everytime i read his dialog, i hear a sexy Cajun french accent in my head. Friday is smart and a little crazy and brave. There is a lot of the banter I have come to love with Janet's books, so that feels familiar. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer. I absolutely cannot wait until the next installment!!

My Bad!! I read the second book in this series first and it was so good I immediately went and got the first book.
Friday Jones is on the run. She saw something she didn't even remember now they are after her. Striker is a shadow and much more. She goes to him for help and the action begins.Striker and Friday have an immediate connection. I'm such a sucker for a Cajun accent.
“You bewitch me.” He whispered the words against her ear, making her shiver. “I close my eyes and dream of how you might taste. Will you taste like sunshine, all warm and light, like your hair? Or will you taste like an aged bourbon, all passion in a concentrated bottle, ready to blow my mind with one little sip?”
There are only a couple of futuristic Sci-Fi series I will read and this is one of them.Action of the chain, characters I cant wait to read more about, humor that has you laughing out loud and a totally different take on shape shifting. Absolutely love this book and cant wait to read more.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I had no qualms about agreeing to do so as the author is one of my favorite authors. I not only have read all of her previous books, I own all of them and they are constantly on my re-read list. That being said, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! I read it in one sitting and devoured every word! I think this may be her best book to date. As it is set in the future, it was a totally new genre for Ms Henderson, and she did an awesome job creating an fascinating new world. The heroine, Friday, is not only on the run, but she's swallowed poison and only has a limited time to live if she can't get to the antidote. The hero is a smuggler who agrees to help her, for a price. This book is fast paced, action packed and laced with sarcastic humor. I couldn't recommend it more for anyone who wants a fun read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for the next book in this new series!

I've been given a free ARC for an honest review. I always enjoy Janet Elizabeth Henderson's books, and this one was no exception. Sci Fi is new territory for the author so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was absolutely blown away! Her story is engaging and fast paced. The world she builds is unique. My pet peeve with sci fi is when the writer doesn't fully develop the world they are setting the story in, or when it is a poorly thought out setting. I didn't encounter that problem here. The female lead reminds me quite a bit of some of Penny Reid's heroines, a dispassionate scientist in need of real world experience. I enjoy those kinds of characters. Kind of like Bones of the TV show bones. The hero is a particularly unique type of badass. There is action, suspense, humor, romance, and a bunch of sci fi plot twists that I won't spoil for you here!
