Crime reporter Harper McClain is back on the beat when a troubled musician vanishes in Christi Daugherty’s Revolver Road.
Even in the chill of February, no place touches Harper McClain’s heart like Savannah. She should be walking beneath the historic city’s towering oaks, surrounded by graceful mansions. Instead, she’s hiding miles away on Tybee Island after a mysterious voice on the phone warned her that someone wanted her dead. The call was too specific to ignore. The caller knew everything about her. But that was months ago, and she’s getting tired of being scared.
Her only escape is her work at the newspaper, where the hottest story in town is the disappearance of Xavier Rayne. The singer had a hit album on his hands, and was about to go on tour, but then he walked out of his beachfront home and vanished. The police believe he drowned, but Harper suspects his disappearance may be more ominous than that. Something doesn’t feel right about it.
His bandmates and actress girlfriend say he’s run away before. They expect him to come home. Until a body washes up with two bullet holes in it. Now everyone in Rayne’s life is a suspect. As Harper digs deeper into the case, though, the threats against her own life return. The phone call she received was very real. A killer from her past is coming for her.
Now she must solve two murders, or end up dying on Revolver Road…

This is the third book in the Harper McClain series and although it will read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading the previous two books in the series, A Beautiful Corpse and The Echo Killing. They provided much-needed background information on Harper, Luke, those in their lives, their relationships and their jobs. Plus, throughout the series, Harper has been haunted by the murder of her mother. In this book, she will have her answers!
As a crime reporter, Harper is called to investigate the disappearance of Xavier Rayne, an up and coming hot singer whose music is climbing the charts. His girlfriend and bandmates share that he has disappeared before, but this time he has not come back. Then a body is found with two bullet holes in it. Is this a simple disappearance or murder?
I enjoyed this book and found it to be a great addition to the series. The mystery here is not too shocking and Harper's relationship with the bandmates and his girlfriend is a little over the top. They seemed to embrace her very fast, but then again, their relationship could be described as symbiotic as Harper got her story and they got someone to bring them food and cigarettes. Either way, the relationship was needed to tell the story. So, suspend some belief and you'll be alright.
As with the previous books, Luke and Harper continue to have that romantic tension between them. The on-again/off-again pull between them. You'll have to read the book to see where this takes them.
Daugherty continues to put the readers right there in Savannah. I felt as if I was right there watching everything unfold as a quiet observer. I enjoy the balance she makes between Harpers’ job, her relationships and the crimes she reports/investigates. I really enjoy this series and the characters. I find these books to be fun, entertaining, fast reads.
Again, read the first two books in this series. I don’t think you can fully appreciate this book without having read the previous two.
Thank you to Minotaur Books and Edelweiss for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
2.75* Harper McClain is a crime reporter. She just left Savannah in a big hurry and laying low since receiving a shocking heads-up. There’s a killer on the loose with her name on his list. But feisty Harper can’t just hide out forever. She has a burning need to always be involved. Hey, she’s a reporter! So when a local rock star goes missing she drops herself into the middle of the investigation. Starting with befriending all his band mates, groupies and friends.
Perhaps it’s because I walked into the middle of this series. I had no background on our lead character Harper and just wasn’t able to connect with her. Some sections of the book just didn’t feel genuine or believable.
Example: The band quickly warmed up to Harper, even wanting her present when the police came knocking. Now come on!!! What rock n’ roller worth his salt would want a member of the press standing right next to him as the police are interrogating him?🤔
With many positive reviews for this book, take a peek at those before making your decision to pick this one up or pass it by.
A buddy read with Susanne
Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for an ARC to read and review
Harper McClain is a crime reporter who is currently working on Tybee Island. Savannah is home to Harper and she’d do anything to get back there instead of hiding out on Tybee. Unfortunately for Harper, someone wants her dead. Is it the man who murdered her mother? She’s been working tirelessly to find out who in hopes that someday she can return home. Till then, reporting on crime is where it’s at.
Lucky for Harper, she just happens to be at the right place at the right time to get the scoop. Singer Xavier Rayne has gone missing. His bandmates and his girlfriend were the last people to see him alive and Harper is the first reporter who gets inside access.
The police are sure that it’s just a missing person until his body is found with two bullet holes in it. Xavier’s friends are beside themselves. Thankfully, they have Harper to lean on. (A bit much in my opinion but hey, they were in mourning!)
“Revolver Road” is well written, mysterious, suspenseful read with a fabulous ending! Though this is the third book in this series, it was my first, thus I wish I had read books one and two first, as I felt like I missed some of the background of the characters. That said, I truly enjoyed this novel and would definitely go back and read the other two.
A buddy read with Kaceey!
Thank you to Minotaur Books and Christi Daugherty for the arc.
I do enjoy this series so much! This is the third book in the Harper McClain series and all three are really good. Christi Daugherty has created a lovable, determined, and courageous character in Harper McClain.
Harper is a journalist for a newspaper in Savannah, Georgia. You can tell she loves her city and the people there, and she enjoys her job. Much of this story is set on tiny Tybee Island, a beach town near Savannah, where Harper is hiding from someone who wants her dead. While on Tybee, a musician disappears and Harper becomes part of the investigation - a big story like this could help keep the declining paper she works for afloat.
Many thanks to Christi Daugherty and St. Martin's Press through Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Crime reporter Harper McClain is back in the third book in this crime series. Someone wants Harper dead, and she's been scared into hiding. She's tired of hiding though, and she believes finding who killed her mother will help solve the mystery of who is after her. For work, Harper is staying busy with the case of missing man Xavier Rayne, a popular musician. Harper works to solve both mysteries.
The mysteries are intriguing. One mystery has Harper digging into the past, and learning the truth about her mother's murder. The other mystery involves a celebrity that everyone assumes drowned, but Harper suspects there's more to the story. The characters are well-developed, and I especially like Harper. She is smart, independent, and hard-working. I love settings like Savannah, with such a rich history, the setting is like another character and adds to the enjoyment of the story.
This is one of my favorite mystery series, so I was excited to read this latest book. I'm happy to say, this continues to be an engaging series. I recommend reading this series in order.
Compelling characters. Entertaining story. Atmospheric setting. A recommended read for fans of crime thrillers with strong female protagonists.
I received a free digital copy of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Crime reporter Harper McClain is working for a Savannah, Georgia newspaper in dire financial straits and hiding out on Tybee Island after an anonymous call six months ago warning her that someone wants her dead.
Fortunately for the struggling paper, McClain has a front page story that can distract her from her personal drama.
Popular musician Xavier Rayne walked out of his Tybee mansion after midnight for a walk on the beach and never returned. Two of his bandmates and his actress girlfriend report him missing, sending the media into a frenzy. While the police believe it's a clear-cut case of accidental drowning, Harper believes there's more to the story after gaining the trust of Rayne's friends. They claim he's left unexpectedly before and expect him to return in time to go on tour ...but then his body is discovered a mile off shore with two bullet holes.
As Harper digs into the musician's life, the threats on her own life return. Her anonymous caller is back, warning her that she needs to investigate another old case to figure out what's coming. Harper has two murders to solve or she could be next.
I started this book on the same day I realized it's actually the third in a series. In the past, I could never get myself to start a series in the middle, but over the last couple years I've learned to live read dangerously. I'm interested enough to go back and read the first two books but there's enough back story here that I didn't feel lost along the way and think it can be read as a stand-alone.
Readers can easily piece together that Harper's mom was murdered years ago and the case is still unsolved. The threat on her own life seems to be tied to her mom's murder, which she has been trying to solve for years. We learn the relationships between characters with ease and how the past led her to her career in crime reporting.
Harper's personal life takes the spotlight in this story and the mysterious death of Xavier Rayne sort of simmers on the back-burner. I felt like the trust of Xavier's friends was too easily earned by Harper. They didn't want to talk to the media and yet they're calling the reporter to help them in the aftermath because she brought them some food and cigarettes once? Meh, it's a little weak. The atmosphere, however, is spot-on. I've spent a lot of time in Savannah and on Tybee Island and the descriptions are accurate, seamlessly drawing readers in to the story and location. While the Xavier Rayne case was a bit flimsy and the truth not very shocking, the show-down between Harper and the killer stalking her was an exciting end to the novel!
Thanks to Minotaur Books and Edelweiss for providing me with a DRC in exchange for my honest review. Revolver Road is scheduled for release on March 10, 2020.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. It's most appreciated!
I really love Harper McClain. She's a great protagonist - dogged, determined, and head strong in the best of ways. She doesn't always make the safest decisions, but she fights hard to find the truth and is a damned good reporter.
This time, she's in semi-hiding, aiming to protect herself from the person who is threatening her life. Her mother's murder, while solved, still isn't behind her. It's still affecting her current life beyond just the normal grief that never seems to go away with events like that. But a murder close to her hideout means she's back out there, looking for the truth.
I guessed the killer in this one. It seems to be a running trend with this series. It also seems to be a thing that it actually doesn't bother me. Because the stories are so good. Because they are hard to put down. Because I really love Harper and the side characters. And because Harper's drive to uncover truth is so compelling to read.
Pick this one up. It's worth it. But make sure you read books 1 and 2 first, as the over-arching story is vital to your enjoyment, and reading ahead would spoil the hell out of the first two books.
Harper is a reporter for a Savannah newspaper who is sent to cover the disappearance of a well-known local musician. She has more on her mind than the story though. A madman who killed her mother 16 years ago is now out of prison and is looking to kill her, too. I was unfamiliar with this series, but it's well-written and suspenseful, with interesting and sympathetic characters, and I loved the Savannah ambiance. It worked well for me as a stand-alone, but I plan to go back and read the author's previous two mysteries since I'm always pleased to find an author who can combine a great plot and likable characters. Thanks to Edelweiss and to the publisher for this ARC.
Her mother's murderer is going to kill her. Yes, Harper McClain is in fear of her life. A very successful reporter, yet hiding from a killer. Instead of living and working in beautiful Savannah, Harper is ensconced in a small beach house on Tybee Island. She can barely get a cell phone signal. However, she must stay hidden until the police can find the person behind the phone call that has terrified Harper.
As it is, Harper has never, ever forgot her mother's murder. It happened when she was quite young, but she saw the killer. It is decades later and now the killer has made his mark. With police protection Harper is at least able to work at the paper. When someone right there in that small town has suddenly disappeared, Xavier Rayne, Harper seeks to get to the bottom of things. The newspaper she works for is floundering, and Xavier is a huge singer, so if Harper solves this - and gets front page coverage - the paper might have a chance at surviving.
It is clear that Xavier drowned, as facts prove, but Harper senses there is much more behind that so she interviews those closest to Xavier. Meanwhile, the threats against her continue. Can she find Xavier's killer and not become a victim herself from her initial threat?
Revolver Road is the third book in the Harper McClain series. I found it to be a compelling read and both Harper's past and present, and dealing with the murder case, kept my interest, especially as the twists and turns flew by at a rapid pace. I look forward to whatever else Christi Daugherty has in store, and really hope Harper will be back for at least one more story. Although this book will do quite well as a standalone, the first two books in the series are The Echo Killing and A Beautiful Corpse. They were also excellent reads.
Many thanks to Minotaur Books and to Edelweiss for this ARC for review in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the third in a series and while I’m sure you could read this on its own I wouldn’t recommend it. Part of why I’m such a fan of these books is because I’ve become so invested in Harper and her history, so if you start here I don’t think you’ll really appreciate her as a character quite as much as if you read from the beginning. BUT, I’ve really enjoyed all three books and can definitely recommend them all. While the story Harper is working on is entertaining enough it’s pretty standard fare as far as a mystery goes. What really kept me engaged was digging deeper into Harper’s past and finally getting some answers to long awaited questions. I also love the setting of Savannah, it’s well drawn by the author and I can easily envision what’s going on. There’s also so much interesting stuff going on in Harper’s personal life, both personally and professionally that I’m excited to see what happens next. Definitely a great addition to a solid series.
Another great book in the Harper McClain series! Harper is still trying to figure out who killed her mother many years ago and finally gets some answers. She is also trying to figure out who killed a famous singer that is in Savannah for rest and relaxation. There’s also a smidgen of romance thrown in because, well, love is what makes the world go round. As a native Georgian, I love how Daugherty always makes me feel as if I am in Savannah right with Harper, driving down Abercorn in her black Camero. I love this series and appreciate the advanced copy from NetGalley!
Harper McClain has retreated to the isolated area of Tybee Island after receiving a mysterious phone call warning her that someone wants her dead. The call was too specific to ignore and too dangerous to not take seriously. The caller knew everything about Harper. After months of no threats against her life, Harper is restless to get back to Savannah. Her daily commute to work at the newspaper is her only time back in the town she calls home.
Soon Harper’s private and work lives find themselves colliding over the disappearance of Xavier Rayne. The musician has a hit album on his hands and is about to head out on tour, but one night he decides to walk out of his beachfront home and never return. Harper is convinced all clues lead to murder and tries to befriend his roommates and bandmates in an attempt to find the truth. As Harper digs deeper into the case, threats from those after her start back up. A killer is coming for her and now she must solve two cases or end up as a victim.
REVOLVER ROAD is the third installment in Christi Daugherty’s Harper McClain series. This book picks up not long after the events of book two, so while I think this book could work as a standalone, I do believe it is more beneficial to the reader to know Harper’s backstory and read them in order.
Immediately within the opening of REVOLVER ROAD the reader knows that they are headed to investigate an interesting and complicated case. The disappearance of Xavier Rayne is much more than a missing person scenario. Daugherty gives the reader complex characters that Harper must work to get close to in the form of Xavier’s roommates. The trio closest to Xavier are clearly hiding something from Harper, but at the same time appear to want to tell their story. It’s a delicate balance we watch unfold as Harper also has to take into consideration how to write about them for the newspaper where she is a journalist.
Support characters are always vital in the success of a novel for me and with this series I know that Daugherty consistently delivers in the form of recurring and new individuals. Harper McClain’s presence as the main character is also something I always know will be successful within this series. McClain is probably one of the strongest female leads that I have read about in the crime fiction genre who is not a police officer or a detective. I love that Daugherty has created McClain as a journalist who has zero fears about putting herself out there to get a story. She has an unstoppable commitment to honesty and discovering the truth, which is evident in her willingness to place herself in harm’s way. Harper McClain is both a character who is complicated, yet easy to bond with, which is ultimately one of the reasons I find myself coming back for more with this series.
If you haven’t met Harper McClain yet, now is the time to get started! The series is still relatively small and the books are absolutely bingeable, so you’ll be caught up before you know it!
A huge thank you to Minotaur Books for my free copy of this book!
Six months ago, crime reporter Harper McClain moved out of Savannah after she received an anonymous phone call telling her to run because someone wanted her dead. Harper assumed this was related to her mother's murder many years ago. So she is temporarily living out on Tybee Island beside the ocean. Sounds like the American dream to me. Well, not the part about living in constant fear.
Savannah hates being away from all the crime in the big city. Her scanner doesn't even work properly on the island but she still drives in to work for the newspaper. She gets involved when an up and coming musician walks to the beach with his guitar and hasn't been seen since. That is, until his body is pulled out of the ocean with two bullet holes.
One note -- I was reading the book and saw Hurricane Isaias pass over Tybee Island. I didn't even know the setting was real until then.
This is the third book I've read with Harper and I feel like I know the characters well now. I like them. Of the two story lines, I thought the one about Dowell wanting to kill Harper was by far the better one. Since most of this story took up the second half, you can guess which part of the book was best.
Revolver Road takes us back to the troubles of crime reporter Harper McClain on the streets of Savannah. This is the third book in the series and I recommend reading the others first. You need a bit of background on Harper to fully understand what the author is resolving within this storyline. I missed out on the first book but read last years A Beautiful Corpse.
I’m not much of a #bookseries reader and tend to gravitate towards standalone books. Series are big commitments to me and I avoid commitment like the plague with my reading life. Daugherty’s Harper McClain series has me changing my tune. When I pick up a book in the Harper series, I feel like I’m coming home. I’m simply comfortable and cozy and I’m a satisfied reader. Daughtery’s books are great for a vast audience. Harper is a well-developed and complicated character; the setting of Savannah is ideal and the story is not overly complex. Highly recommend this series if you’re looking for something you can curl up under a blanket with and fans will be delighted to finally get some long answered questions.
My first in this series. The premise sounded great, but I struggled through this in the beginning. I think it’s because I didn’t find Harper very interesting. I read through some reviews of the first two books in the series and I felt I was just missing something.
I also found it unrealistic that the friends (and band mates) of this singer/musician would just open the house doors to her and divulge all the info they did. Even to the point of calling her and asking her to come back out because there were TV vans and reporters all over the street. She’s a crime reporter! There is zero reason for them to trust her. It was hard for me to pull it together after that.
Given the solid reviews of the first two books, I’m sure this latest installment will be well received by her fans. Unfortunately, for me this was just an average read.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
Harper McClain's 3rd episode finds her hiding in a beach side community near Savannah in an effort to stay safe from her mother's unknown murderer. While there, Harper's on the spot to cover the disappearance of a well known musician. Things move pretty fast, but this book tidies up the major story arc that's been hanging over her since the first book, while leaving her barely enough time and energy to solve an ancillary murder. But, OTOH, there are enough continuing complications to leave me in anticipation for the next book.
Daugherty is an experienced writer and has constructed a mystery/thriller that has all of the elements to make this series a real winner. She has balanced action, tight dialog, character growth, skillfully integrated setting, and well developed minor characters.
When a musician disappears shortly before his new album is released, crime reporter Harper McClain wants to investigate.
Police think Xavier Rayne committed suicide by drowning himself, but Harper suspects something more involved, as shots were heard on the beach the night he disappeared.
Then a man's body washes up with two bullet holes Xavier was a lot different in his professional life than his personal one. His girlfriend is grief-stricken, yet Xavier was known to be a player.
She's been hiding out some miles away from the hub of Savannah after receiving notice that someone wants her dead ... just like her mother. She doesn't know who .. or why .. but she's taking no chances. As Harper digs deeper into the case, though, the threats against her own life return. The phone call she received was very real. A killer from her past is coming for her.
Now she's out to solve two murders ... while staying alive herself.
This is a well written story, perfectly balanced between Harper's past and present. The two stories mesh seamlessly with abundant multiple suspects. As a newspaper reporter, this author began covering murders at the age of 22 and I was expecting a large amount of credibility ... I was not disappointed. Although this is third in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone. However, I do recommend starting at the beginning and reading in order. Harper is a great character and one not to be ignored.
Many thanks to the author / St Martin's Press / Minotaur Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
We're back in Savannah with crime reporter Harper McClain. After being told to RUN!, she is hiding out on Tybee Island while she figures out who wants her dead.
In between working at the newspaper and trying to solve her mother's murder, she is now on the case of who killed Xavier Rayne. An up and coming music star who was set to go on tour when he walked out of his rented beach house on Tybee. His girlfriend and two bandmates are acting very suspicious and when a body shows up with bullet holes they all become suspects.
Digging deeper into the case has her not quite sure who to believe and now threats against her own life are being made which have nothing to do with the Rayne case. Someone is watching her. Someone wants to protect her. Someone wants her dead.
Who can she trust?
I love this series. Every one. This book is the reason I did not see the Super Bowl! That is how the edge of your seat crazy suspenseful this book is!
This book moves pretty slowly at first and aspects of it (I.e. the romance) weren’t necessary to the story, these seem to only have added pauses when the mystery and excitement were gearing up. Towards the end the book picked up pace and all the issues are fixed and mysteries resolved within two chapters. Overall, this is an easy, entertaining and fast read. Sadly, I did guess the answer to the mystery early, but overall an alright book.
I was hooked on this book from Chapter 1. I loved the setting and I really enjoyed the characters. I'm going to go back to read the other books in this series. I found this mystery really well crafted and totally enjoyable.
Revolver Road by Christi Daugherty is a highly recommended mystery and the third book in the Harper McClain series.
Crime reporter Harper McClain is investigating the disappearance of a musician Xavier Rayne from Tybee Island. Harper happens to be living on the island after receiving a credible warning that she needed to move out of Savannah because someone wanted her dead. She never thought that the quiet island where she has been living for months would be the scene of a major story.
Apparently Rayne went out to the beach late at night to write music and never returned. He had just released an album and was about to go on tour. His bandmates and girlfriend are living in his house on the island and seem to be grief stricken, but something doesn't quite feel right to Harper. She manages to befriend Rayne's friends for a source of inside information into his disappearance.
To make matters worse, Harper has uncovered more information that might lead her to the identity of her mother's killer. The killer has ties to Harper's family from years ago but he is about to be released from prison and is coming for Harper. Now Harper is investigating a death while looking out for a killer who is coming for her. Her on-again, off-again love interest, homicide detective Luke Walker, is back helping her.
Harper is an interesting, complex, well-developed character and readers new to the series will like her. In fact all the characters are well-developed, even the minor ones, which makes this even more interesting. It was a bit surprising that Rayne's housemates accepted Harper's overtures for friendship so easily. Under the circumstances, I would expect a whole lot more skepticism and some solid standoffish behavior from them toward any reporter.
The well-written novel features an intricate plot in both of the duel storylines. The investigations into Rayne's death and into her mother's killer are equally compelling plots and will hold your attention. I haven't read the first two Harper McClain novels and had no problem following the plot, so can be read as a stand-alone novel and doesn't require reading the first two to understand the backstory. It is a good enough novel that you will seriously want to read the first two in the series.
And so the Harper McClain series came to an end...Harper finally got the answers she was hoping for, for 16 years, in this climatic last book of the series.
The ending was definitely satisfactory regarding the main plot, but some sub plots were left open to interpretation, which leads me to hope that the author would return to this universe and write more about Harper, because I definitely believe that Harper deserves an ending where's she's more than just satisfied with her life and where things are less confusing/complicated for her.
Harper is definitely one of my favorite characters, she's strong, vulnerable and fights for what she believes in. She is definitely a character that would stay with me. I'm really sad that I have to say goodbye to her and the universe.
I loved how the murder in this book was tied to the title. It was brilliantly incorporated. All the side characters (old and new) are multifaceted and definitely brings depth to the story. I also loved the similarities between Harper's situation and the murder case.
Christy Daugherty yet again wrote a series that I loved and enjoyed. Her writing is amazing and I would definitely recommend reading her series! Well done! 👏🏻
Oh, I really hope that this isn't the end of this wonderful series!! This third installment of the Harper McClain series opens up with just enough reminders and recaps of the first two books that my memory felt refreshed without it being too much of a giveaway (though, honestly, I always recommend starting from the beginning of a series!). In contrast to the second book, this one does a better job of not revealing too much of the previous plots. And though this one has a self-contained mystery, a lot of the book continues the murder mystery that is most central to Harper's character arc - the death of her mother. This one, though, feels like the end of the series with its epilogue three months later... my fingers are crossed that this isn't the case!
Harper's career as a newspaper journalist is really put under pressure here as the Savannah newspaper continues its decline. Familiar faces make plenty of appearances here, along with some new ones to include in the main story that Harper works on - the disappearance from Tybee Island of an up and coming musician. I really like Daugherty's writing - and I enjoyed this one quite a bit, though I don't think that this is the strongest entrant in the series. But, nearly every dangling part of the plot is resolved here making this really feel like the end. I have enjoyed the Savannah setting, and I also appreciated the Tybee Island addition here. The storyline moves along at a fast pace and takes some unexpected turns. The ultimate climatic scene is perhaps a little easier to see coming, and the romance feels a bit too rushed to be satisfying after drawing it out over the course of three whole books, but hopefully this isn't really the end! I am not ready to say goodbye to these characters!
I Liked the First two books of the series and I'm a Fan of Harper and the other characters. I also enjoyed the writing of Christi Daugherty. But I didn't Like that the mystery of why her Mom got killed was revealed at the First Quarter/third (?) of the book just like that and that there wasn't a Plot Twist or anything to it after that. So for the Rest of the book i Just waited for the big Showdown which was pretty obvious would Happen at the very end and for Things to be working Out with Luke finally. From the time i knew who was going after Harper i wasn't excited about the book anymore. I'm disappointed that the tension which was build up through the other two books was (at least for me) gone so fast in the Last book of the series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is my job. I don't think i'll ever do anything else. -Harper McClain
An up and coming rock star goes missing. Harper is on the case. At the same time she is still searching for the killer of her mother, stressing over the financial stability of her newspaper, juggling her love life, and her landlord needs her out by the end of the month. Oh, did i mention the godfather of the southern mafia wants her dead? Look at the bright side, she doesn't have to worry about the coronavirus. Another well told chapter in the life of newspaper reporter Harper McClain
Savannah, Georgia is nearly the star of Revolver Road, the third in Christi Daugherty’s excellent Harper McClain series. That gorgeously described, slow paced riverfront city is upstaged by Harper, a crime reporter for the Savannah Daily News.
Harper is living on nearby Tybee Island while she evaluates what might be a threat to her life and plans a return to the city. Her newspaper editor has provided her with a guard at the building and the local police are aware of the situation. The sound of gunshots on this quiet island involve her in a missing person case. This is not an ordinary missing person, either. Xavier Rayne, a musician on the edge of stardom, is to begin the tour for his newest song Revolver Road in days. He’s reported missing by his girlfriend Cara Brand and musicians Hunter Carlson and Allegra Hansen. Harper befriends Xavier’s companions as she tries to understand his disappearance. Meanwhile, the danger from her past resurfaces. With her safety at risk, Harper must now solve two mysteries.
While I really enjoyed reading Revolver Road, I did not know that it was part of a series. Strong writing and explanations helped me understand previous events in Harper’s life but I would have preferred a little more detail. I plan to read The Echo Killing and A Beautiful Corpse next. 4 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Christi Daugherty for this ARC.
First book I read in this series and won't surely be the last. It's an excellent mystery, well crafted and solid, with a great cast of characters and a vivid depiction of Savannah. I found it engrossing and entertaining, recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Revolver Road by Christi Daugherty is a multi-layered mystery. This third installment in the Harper McClain series can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading the first two books for important backstory.
Reporter Harper McClain is temporarily living on Tybee Island when she becomes involved with a missing person's case. Harper cannot help but wonder if the gunshot reports from the night before might have something to do with musician Xavier Rayne disappearance.
