Innovative, accessible, and easily implemented, One Degree Revolution is acclaimed yoga educator and leadership coach Coby Kozlowski's holistic program for self-inquiry and personal transformation. Her philosophy is deeply connected to living yoga--not just doing yoga. In fact, readers don't need to have ever attended a yoga class to dive into this book: her thoughtful teachings are for anybody interested in learning to navigate the waves of life more skillfully and gracefully.
Imagine sailing a boat with a course set for a lifetime. If that route changes by just one navigational degree, what would happen to the journey? How far from the original trajectory would we be in one year? Five years? Ten years? Twenty years? Well, we would end up in a totally different place. In much the same way, we can change the course of our life by making a one degree shift. In other words, we don't have to change everything about ourselves or our world to make a difference.
Coby inspires readers to dig deep, to ask powerful questions and to dive into the insights, experiments, and inquiries of living yoga: how can I best be with life? How can the teachings of yoga direct us to see the most aligned choices, let go of past hurts, and discover deep and meaningful connections? And what are the most skillful ways we can learn to savor all that life presents? These yoga philosophies are infused with practical strategies for creating the life you truly want and having a positive impact on the world.
One Degree Revolution will guide readers to: -access infinite personal possibilities -celebrate their authentic selves and start listening to their calling -find meaning and purpose -learn to let go and trust the unfolding of life -value taking a pause and making a fresh start when needed -challenge long-held beliefs and foster transformational change -get comfortable with being uncomfortable, and -develop their community
“You are not your past/you are not your wounds/You are the co-creator of your reality”
I started reading this book the way I usually read most books—quickly. This is really something you should go through thoughtfully, flagging the parts that speak to you.
This uses yoga philosophy as a way to change small things in your life, little by little potentially leading to big change. You don’t need to practice yoga to understand what she talks about. I used to practice yoga a lot more than I do now, but most of the terms she talks about in here that she clearly defines I’d never heard of, so don’t trouble yourself with that aspect of this.
As with most books about living a better life, some parts really spoke to me, while others I shook my head and thought, “That is so never going to happen.” In case you’re wondering, I’m absolutely never going to hang out in the woods without a cell phone and create “forest art” with twigs and pinecones and leaves.
There were so many great quotes and ideas in here. I really recommend buying this so you can highlight ideas that inspire you and try to implement a few things into your own life.
It’s a bummer that this comes out a couple weeks after Christmas because this seems like a book both my mother and sister would enjoy. In any case, thanks so much to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book, which RELEASES JANUARY 7, 2020.
This book was a lot of hokum. It's a bunch of poorly-written New Age visualization techniques. It's simplistic, designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator in readership. The book is both vague and nebulous, much like the attempts to describe the visualization approaches "suggested" by the author. If you like reading existentialism, like myself, it's unlikely that you will like this book. The philosophies found in this book are not unique to the author - they're just better described by everyone else who is using them. This book hits at about a late middle school reading level. It could probably be reworked, though it certainly wouldn't need to be dumbed down, and marketed to that audience with a measure of success, but it's not worth sitting through as an adult. The only thing "deep" about this book is the amount of boredom it inspires. 1.5, rounded up because it is an ARC and theoretically that means that it could have the potential to improve before publication, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
This book was nonsense, careless, and contradictory. Trying to effect changes in people by talking about “gremlins”, “riding the waves”, and “riptides” causes me to not take anything seriously. I also did not understand the point that we are perfect, but should strive for another perfection. Humans are imperfect. Perfection is not possible. Also, trying to guide people through guided meditation while they are alone and encouraging them to push through the difficult experiences is not a safe practice. Especially since there was no clear signs for when one should seek professional help. Lastly, the title is misleading. One degree changes.... there are about 40 degrees of suggested changes in the book with vague generalities to help you choose the best path. #GoodreadsGiveaway
Coby Kozlowski does a good job of presenting interesting information about the various types of yoga and ties in how living the yoga life can inspire you to make small changes that have big impacts on your life. As she says, only one degree difference in navigating a boat and you end up an entirely different place. So too, can the myriad of decisions and choices we make and how we handle situations impact the life we lead and our satisfaction with that life.
Very readable, as with any self-improvement book, you'll find some of the information seems to speak directly to you while other bits fall to the side. The book invites you to constantly observe and question your life to make sure you are doing what supports what you'd like from your life and is in keeping with values you define as important to you. It's also good at reminding us that we play a part in every interaction and thus have some /accountability/responsibility as to its outcome. We are constantly building our life, growing and evolving. A refreshing read.
One Degree Revolution gets a 3.5 star review from me.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Essential Press for allowing me to read an ARC of the book in exchange for an unbiased review. Opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you to Goodreads and St. Martin Press for providing me with an ARC of this book via a Goodreads giveaway. As someone who has faithfully practiced yoga for the last 3 years, I was excited about reading this book and was looking forward to new ideas and inspiration. Maybe it is because I'm in my 40s or maybe because I've had counseling in the past, but I did not find a lot of new information in this book that I didn't already know or seemed intuitive. I was expecting more of a link to the practice of yoga itself but there was only limited linkage there. I was honestly not that engaged through most of the book. However, I really loved chapter 6 about instinctive mediation. This was a totally new viewpoint of mediation that I had not encountered before and I really appreciated Coby's discussion and explanation of it and will be incorporating her advice and recommendations immediately. She re-educates the reader on the topic of mediation and its goals and it was really an affirming chapter.
This excellent self-help book offers the philosophy of yoga for personal transformation and growth. If you are into yoga, you'll want to go beyond the poses and physical practice of yoga and explore the deeper wisdom offered in this book. If you're not into yoga, rest assured that you won't need any knowledge of the physical practice of yoga at all to benefit from this book.
The author offers lots of wise counsel in this book, accompanied by pertinent questions to explore your authentic self and put past demons to rest. This book would be great for anyone finding themselves in any sort of transitory season of life and wanting to move forward. The book is well-written and keeps your interest to the last page. Highly recommended.
A breath of fresh air. Accessible, applicable and transformative.
I loved this book, I wish it was available 20 years ago! Coby makes the powerful teachings of yogic philosophy so accessible. I enjoyed her own personal stories woven throughout and through the wonderful reflections and inquiries I had many awakenings, and growth spurts. This will be one I return to again and again to experience "remembering" my truest self.
If you choose to pick up this book and embrace this woman in your life - be prepared for your world to get rocked, in the best way possible.
I have gifted this book to many in my life and am excited to share as required reading for students in all of my trainings and programs.
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads Giveaways. Thank you!
Kozlowski applies the principles of yoga to help you examine your life and improve yourself by what she terms "one-degree" changes. Her principles seem to revolve around taking stock of some area of your life, your actions, your thoughts, etc. and thinking of a small way to improve and then putting that change into action. Her examples are helpful and she encourages frequent reflection. I'm not familiar with yoga beyond the physical movements (and I'm not even very familiar with that), but most of the ideas here seem generic enough that you don't need to think about the yoga side and instead use this as a way to engage in self-reflection and try to make meaningful changes in your life.
I really love Coby Kozlowski's approach to sharing the lessons of yoga philosophy as a pathway to living a more inspired life. She corrals a range of concepts in an accessible, entertaining way (she's a gifted storyteller) and offers practical exercises for inquiry and compassionate self-observation. I found myself reading the book in increments, taking time to do some of the inquiries and reflect on the content, which made me realize that the almost breezy writing style belies the depth of what is being shared. I feel I learned a lot about what "living yoga" means (and it isn't about your downward dog), and the importance of being willing to dissolve who I think I am for the sake of being who I really am.
In the One Degree Revolution, Coby Kozlowski offers his hard-won learning and wise perspective on how to "live in wonder and curiosity." His bracing, encouraging words allow the reader to consider and decide upon the small changes they can make to shift their life toward positive change, beginning exactly where they are and moving into the world with increased insight and vitality. I enjoyed every word, appreciated his respectful approach (he can't know what a good life is for anyone other than himself), and the practices/questions he poses are ones that can be mulled, used, transformed into what best works for each person. A valuable, life-changing guide.
This book makes yoga philosophy, which in many other books can seem really complicated and hard to grasp, easy to understand and relate to. I bought both the book and audiobook because I love being able to bookmark things I love, and also listen to it on my morning drive. I own a yoga studio and will be requiring all of the people in our teacher training to read it! I believe this book is great for everyone to read, but particularly for young people looking for some direction. Give this gift to yourself or someone you know who could use some insight, clarity, and inspiration.
Really a wonderful read for a beginner yogi such as myself. This book introduces a lot of key concepts to living yoga in a digestible, understandable fashion. I have already found myself incorporating some of the principle that the author lovingly suggests. The book took me longer than most to finish because I found myself reading a few pages and getting lost in thought about my own experiences. In particular I enjoyed that the author found nuances about "sitting in the fire" while still taking time to pause and rest.
The upside is I felt that the information she presented was valid and there's a lot of truth in this book. Since I listened to the audio version, I should mention that I enjoyed the author's voice. But the downside is that I couldn't go above a 2-star rating. The way the info is packaged and presented just didn't strike me in a deep or enlightening way. The phrases used were cliche and overused, "gremlins", "the fire", etc. I just didn't take away any new ideas from this one and was ready to move on.
This is a book you read slowly going back over certain points and rereading. This book will help you make small changes in your life one step at a time that lead to larger bigger changes. It is breath of fresh air and a book that needs to be marked up and notated. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy free of charge. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of it.
I liked some of the ideas in this book, but I didn't really see myself using a lot of them. I did like how she redefined what meditation can be-- the idea of instinctive meditation appeals to me. I also like the chapter titled Begin Again. It is a good message, and one I often need to stop and remember-- when we make a mistake or wrong turn, we can always (usually, at least) begin again.
This is not my typical choice for a book but it’s written by a childhood friend AND Sharon read it and loved it, so I decided to give it a try. Coby’s beliefs and practices resonated deeply with me and I think everyone could find something to take from her wisdom, even if you’re not a regular yoga practitioner. Listening to Coby was affirming and inspiring - and Paige loved the Russell Mill shout out. I highly recommend everyone give this beautiful book a listen. ❤️🧘🏽♀️ Thank you, Coby!
This book is so thoughtful, insightful, and inspirational. It guides you into peeling back the layers of yourself to get to your core. And it teaches you that even one small shift can cause seismic changes in your life. I urge you to get this book. Coby is a master at what she does - teaching you to show up and live an authentic, rewarding and beautiful life.
Interesting book to look back and ponder how changing the small things can have a profound impact on the direction of your life. It was a nice reminder of ideas that I ponder from time to time. I had picked it up last year and didn't get back to it until the beginning of this year and it was a nice reminder to think about changing small things as the new year unfolds.
Well-intended, sweet, cheerleader-ish. I appreciate that the author spoke on her health struggles, and how yoga/meditation encouraged the healing process. Less enthused that buzz word-isms are nearly mandated for any spiritual, or self-help inclined writers these days..."one degree changes," indeed.
I received a free copy of One Degree Revolution: How Small Shifts Can Lead To Big Changes a while ago in a Goodreads giveaway and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I really enjoyed learning about the different ways to live yoga. The book made it very easy to change your ways in very small simple steps
I have been waiting for this book for a long time and it was well worth the wait! This is everything. I went through the book slowly, doing the homework exercises and really doing my best to absorb everything. Very inspiring!
I think this book would be its best for younger readers who are still figuring out themselves. This may help with confidence for younger readers. Adults may have a harder time reading this because of the writing.
Coby has taught me so much and this book condenses everything down into an easy to read form. I’d love for everyone I know in my life to take in some of these lessons and move toward a more fulfilling life, if they choose to seek it.
The content of this book has inspired profound changes in how I approach personal challenges and relationships. Coby elegantly provides new ways to learn about ourselves so we can savour all the goodness of life.
This book isn't just about yoga. Although it will help you to take your yoga practice into the world. I think this is a great book for anyone especially those looking to make a change or who may feel stuck. One of the best non-fiction, self-help books I've read in a long time.
I found this book to be adorably helpful and inspiring. Lots to highlight and definitely one I will be picking up again and again. I met this author a couple months ago during a presentation and love her energy and the gifts she shares. Thank you Coby!!
