Yachiho has settled into her decidedly haunted house, where she helps wandering spirits cross to the other side. However, her spooky home life is starting to invade her school as well, with strange spirits lurking near her classroom and the mysterious spirit-master Kamo Chihaya claiming to be her new teacher. Yachiho isn’t the only one searching for the Book of the Dead: Her powerful new rivals threaten to turn her life upside down!
I preferred this to the first volume. It gives more info about her missing mother and features "the illustrated guide to spirits" scattered throughout the book.
the art is such a banger but i have no clue how this is gonna be wrapped up in only one more volume— i feel like i won‘t get as much information about kamo & komei as i‘d prefer.
I enjoy this book maybe a little bit more than the first one. Yachiho continues to grow on me as an interesting main character and our side character begin to feel like actually players in the story instead of just people that appear then walk away. Two things I really enjoyed and found quite refreshing were these;
Yachiho’s dad not being a miserable sap. I don’t know I just figured since he wasn’t really around, seems obsessed with his work and finding His wife/Yachihos mom, and leaving his daughter behind after just moving somewhere that we were gonna get some sad sack of a father. Instead we got this super energetic not really special in any way dad. And yes he is obsessed with his work, but not to the point where it’s like “it has to be this way” and all brooding and cold shoulder (maybe I read to much Batman/Bruce Wayne). Instead he is hyper and really enthusiastic, but still a bad dad. I just don’t think he realizes he is bad.
And secondly I enjoyed the little mythology and history lesson behind some of this mythological creatures at the end of each chapter.
So in short. Good story, but nothing ground breaking. If you enjoyed volume one you’d probably enjoy volume two. Just read to see what’s going on with Kamo and his little side kick and organization.
I liked the first volume more. I think it is funny in manga about who can become homeroom teachers. I am curious about Tachibana. I like how we are learning about him in tiny bits. I thought the dad was introduced too soon and was very childish. Disappointing. I love the art.

This was a fun volume! We got to meet Yachiho's father, who is an adorable unreliable doofus, and learn a little bit more about the circumstances of her mother's disappearance. It seems she was investigating the disappearance of the man who previously owned the haunted house, Tachibana. We also met an additional member of Kamo's organization, pointy-toothed Koumei, and Kamo himself started teaching as a substitute teacher at Yachiho's school.
The ghosts were just as interesting as the previous volume. I like how beautiful yet creepy they really are. The mirror guardian (Kadonomori) was definitely the creepiest! He also gave us a few more hints about the Book of the Dead and what Moro's transgression might be. I think it's all coming back to Tachibana, who not only messed with things he should not have but also wrote down exactly how he did it!
I wonder if Yachiho and her mother will be reunited in the end... or if there's no coming back from the world of the dead... 3/5
This one concentrates more on advancing the overall plot vs 1001 spiritual beings that needs crossed back to the spirit realm. Yachiko is settling into her new school but is getting no closer to the Book of the Dead which she and her father believe will help locate her missing mother.
The fly in the soup here is Kamo Chihaya who can also see spirits but treats them meanly. He's now her teacher and wants her to find the Book of the Dead as well but she can only guess why he and his associates want it. Yachiko doesn't think it's going to be for any good reason.
We still get three different spirits in this but they are multi-chaptered and less frenetic than last time so the stories develop a bit more. Through them Yachiko learns more about the missing Tachibana, former spirit-master who lived in her house and maybe her mother's fate too. However, is his disappearance the result of something bad he did?
The art is very nice. I will keep getting this one out of the library
A really good continuation of the series that makes me want to keep reading! Art- the art is really good in this one, might even be better than the first. The characters are very expressive, especially the new character in the last chapter. The composition feels less cramped and the style is pretty detailed. Story- I found myself enjoying this volume more than the first. The formula is mixed up and you get to see more wordlbuilding. You get to see spirits outside the house and how they interact with people who can’t see them. The side characters seemed to have more time to shine as well. They’re simple but add a little variety to the story. Yachiho herself is becoming more likeable in my eyes also. There’s also some more mystery added to further the story. There’s not much critique I can say. All I and all I really like this series and this volume.
The spirits in this story were intriguing and the chapters were structured well. I think the main mystery did get a little sidelined but they did some other character building. Again, frames are well structured to easily tell the read order.
I did notice in both this book and the first book that sometimes the frames are cropped a little too tight and sometimes that makes it hard because they tend to be action scenes and sometimes they kinda just look like a flurry or are harder to tell what is going on. Sometimes this is accentuated by the use of grey tones as well.
But generally speaking, I really like the art style, and the flair of the artist and I think that those few frames don't really detract from that overall.
Yachiho has managed to settle in her new home, which is very haunted, and she helps the wandering spirits to cross over. But the spirit world is beginning to invade other aspects of her life; she begins to see them near her school, and the spirit master is her new teacher.
I enjoyed the first volume a bit more, but I still liked this one. So far, it's been interesting. I look forward to the next volume and seeing how the story resolves.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first one. It has a bit of a similar feel to Natsume's Book of Friends, pulling heavily on Shinto lore. The characters are interesting, with enough variety that I am curious to see where everything's going. I love the way the spirit creatures are drawn and the variety of youkai and spirits.
The girl learns that there are people out there who are less safe for spirits to be seen by, and she has one teacher who might be one of them. After catching him trespassing in her new home, she starts to find many things that make her uneasy about this man covered in burn scars. Somehow he seems to be intertwined in the mystery of what happened to her mom.
Once again the art style is beautiful!! and tbf we do get to learn a little more about the characters, however I still find the plot a little patchy though what can be expected from a 3 volume series 🤷
Yachiho continues to search for the Book of the Dead and helps with a drought.
There is little added to the main story arc here but there are some sweet moments with Yachiho and spirits. Her dad coming home and leaving was utterly ridiculous - worst dad of the year!
