Cain shakes off the chill of a long cold winter on the south face of Marble Mountain, with only Dog, Bud, and Coonskin Kelly for company. Coonskin has gone and the cupboard is bare, so it’s time for a trip to town for supplies. Cain isn’t one to do much talking. In fact, most folks are lucky to get a one word sentence out of him. But when there’s a tragedy and a helping hand is needed, he’s the first to reach out a big callused paw. Just doing a simple act of kindness found him at the Agular Land Grant in Colorado, where the Front Range meets the Great Plains. The Agular Grant has been verified by the US Government, and it’s the home of thirty or so families. The problem facing them is coming from the state of Kansas, hundreds of miles to the east. The Office of Land Management had opened parcels of land to be claimed in western Kansas. But there were some large cattle spreads right in the middle of the area to be claimed. These cattle barons had never bought a single acre of land… they were simply wealthy squatters. And they had to go. Most sold their cattle for what they could get in a tight market. A few drove their cattle west, looking for someplace to light. One powerful rancher had his eye on the Agular Grant, and he had a monster herd moving toward the families who lived there… and Shadrac Cain.
Lou Bradshaw is a lifelong story teller, who spent most of his life as a commercial illustrator and graphic artist. Deadlines, clients, and vendors were all sources of sleep depriving stress. To combat insomnia, he would often create stories in his mind to take the place of what was bothering him. Soon, some of those stories had grown to the point that they needed to be put on paper. Taking up a felt tip pen and a loose leaf binder, he found something new, challenging, and exciting. He soon filled multiple binders and his distraction had become a passion. Upon retirement, he began assembling notes and scribbles into novels… the rest is history. One of the unique features of his work is that as a dyslexic child, he was considered either slow or lazy by most of his teachers. To date he has written 7 books, which is 6 more than he was able to read while in school. His only legitimate book report, although 3 months late, was Huckleberry Finn. Lou and his wife Avon live in the Missouri Ozarks, where they enjoy their family, golf, and the great outdoors.
Another great read from Mr. Bradshaw. Great story line with great characters and lots of action. Looking forward to the next book. Would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great western.
This one was a gooder, but then they ALL are! Glad to hear you aint stoppin at 25 you old scudder, cuz there's lots of us waitin on the next 'un. You keep churnin 'em out and we'll keep readin 'em! Bless you sir!
As usual, Lou delivers an entertaining yarn led by one of my favorite characters. Cain is not larger than life, but is an experienced, capable and moral protagonist who won't tolerate men that exploit those that can't defend themselves. He doesn't go looking for trouble, but won't back away when it comes to him. I'm not overly fond of first person narrative, but Lou does a great job telling the story through Cain's voice.
To my fellow Lou Bradshaw fans I think he gets better with age. This book was a classic. Kept me turning pages as fast as I could. When Cain came up with two cans of black powder I thought too my self things was fixin' to get interesting. And it did I'll let you read the book and see for yourself.
I'm 77 and hope you never stop writing until after I am gone and I am not planning
on leaving real soon either. I need some good books from a great story teller to keep me entertained and you do a great great great job. Thank you for being there for me and the 100's like me who enjoy your stores. THANK YOU
I so enjoy these books on Shad. He is a quiet very caring man. Always willing to fight for people who need his help. I also love the books on Blue. Thank you Lou Bradshaw for a really great read.
The problem with Bradshaw's books is yummy cannot put them down before last page, that means no sleep a little food and a lot of coffee....but hey keep them coming...a really great story that I recommend from a great author that I like very much.
Excellent read. Cain is amazing. He is almost super human, and he survives the most dangerous situations. Saving the Mexican sheep herders and their land was a good thing. Hope This is not the last book about Cain.
I'll start out by saying I love Shad Cain, Dog and Bud, who is very particular who he allows to ride him and also what other horses are around him. His home spun but practical out look of life. There's one sentenced I love when he's attempting to read a telegram, he explains how he was stretching, squinting trying to decipher the telegram..once the telegraph operator realized that Cain couldn't read like so many men, women living on the frontier or the mountains. As Cain said all five words.."I am on my way. " If any of you have read previous Shad Cain adventures, you know how this author writes, and it'll pull you into Cain's presence as he carved on a piece of wood which will eventually resemble something beautiful as an animal of the forest. I love this series and so will everyone who reads about Shadrac Cain and his riding partners. So everyone ride easy and keep the wind at your back.
Shad Cain books are my lifeblood and I have never found one that wasn't exciting and entertaining revelations about what I picture the old West was really like. He is a man of few words, but don't cross his bad side, or your life will be short lived.
Never read a book by Mr. Lou Bradshaw that wasn't a five star masterpiece and all of Shad Cain's definitely are. This one certainly is five stars and more. Definitely filled with a little suspense throw together to bring justice and preservation of western peace. The camaraderie among the good guys is most endearing and very descriptive of how real.people work together to bring peace and security to the old homeland! Mr. Bradshaw went above and beyond with his successful storylines and the descriptiveness of the action certainly touches the heartstrings of his readers. Too, his character selections throughout the entire book were definitely befitting of their assigned roles; good and bad! Definitely a heartwarming adventure of truly old American folklore western adventures. Without reservation, I definitely recommend this outstanding episode of how the West was conquered and how the good guys worked together in overcoming the bad guys. Regardless of your reading preference, I believe you will enjoy following Cain and his entourage of gunfighters who will definitely appease your most demanding desires. Camaraderie was at its best from beginning to end!😁
