Based on the true story of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off the coast of Alaska, Gloria Rand's children's picture book Prince William is a tale of compassion and environmentalism--beautifully illustrated by Ted Rand.
In Prince William Sound, Alaska, a tanker crashes on a reef and spills millions of gallons of oil into the waters.
On a beach nearby, a little girl named Denny finds a baby seal covered with oil. It is barely alive. How can she save its life?
This book is based on a true story. It talks about an oil spill in Alaska in 1989. This book shows a little girl who saved a baby seal(pup) from the oil after her mother's reminders to stay away from the oil. She takes this pup to the rescue center she sees all the animals that were impacted by the oil. I would have my students research this oil spill and write about it.
Historical Fiction Middle Grades (4-6) I bought this book after it was used by professor Prahl and I like it. I didn't actually know if the seal was going to make it or not and that made me nervous. It goes well for a unit on conservation.
I remember the oil spill in Prince William Sound. I was about 10 years old and I remember my teacher telling the class about it. Since then, I confess I'd forgotten about it as disaster after disaster replaced it in the forefront of my mind. It's too bad that it wasn't the last of the great oil spills and that we haven't made an unprecedented effort to prevent all future accidents of this kind from happening.
This story is about a little girl in Prince William Sound, Alaska who rescues a baby seal after a tanker crashes and spills lots of oil in the ocean. She waits nervously for weeks waiting to find out if the seal, which they named Prince William, will make it. As a teacher, this story could be used to teach children about the environment and how to take care of it as well as how to do the right thing.
This is a great story about a baby seal who is rescued by a young girl in an oil spill in Alaska. This could be paired with information and books about the 2010 oil spill.
