THIS IS EAGLE FORCE... They fight the dirty wars that no one else can or will take on. They pick their clients, and they call their own shots. Hostage recovery. Missing persons. Assassinations. Global terrorist search-and-destroy missions. They'll do it in a heartbeat - if the cause is just. CONTRACT FOR SLAUGHTER Vic Gabriel, Eagle Force commander, assembles his elite team to perform an impossible mission: rescue a billionaire's daughter from a gang of terrorists in blood-spattered Tunis, in a raid that will bring the entire world to the brink of war - unless it succeeds.
Eagle force was a book I have been wanting to read for a while now, in the 80s men’s action genre. However; reviews of this book had put me off for a while. After finally being able to scoop this book up for $5, I decided to give it a read.
A big complaint this book receives from the reviews, is that it’s a team being put together. That book one is all about the creation of the team, and not much action.
As a fan of the genre, team mercenary groups were popular, but it is the one downfall of these types of books. Most of the time, book one, in any team series, is spent explaining how the group gets together with very little action.
I tend to agree. The first book of mercenary teams is always the worst. A lot of details, no action until the very end, and then the book is over right when it started getting good. But you need to read the first book to fully appreciate the characters.
But what I don’t agree with, is the negative reviews of eagle force. Yes, the book spends the majority of it building the team. However, eagle force is able to keep the action going entire book. Every member we meet of Eagle force, we are met with over the top action.
Somehow, in this short read, the author was able to fit so many storylines within its pages. Without giving spoilers, we see the past of our main character, his family, and life, (which then in return, will play a big part in book 2, and if I were to guess the whole series) we have a government agency storyline, as well as the main storyline, and somehow the author manages to tie them all neatly together, without over complicating the story, and keeping it at 156 pages.
The action in this book almost never stops, and the gore is not over the top. For me, personally, I enjoy in this genre when the gore is over the top. But if you are more of a fan of gore being kept to a minimum, this will be a plus for you. For me, the Gore was in a sweet spot that doesn’t take away from the story, and doesn’t leave me wanting more, so it can’t be reviewed negatively.
If you’re like me, and you’re a fan of this genre, than you are going to love it, finish it in a day or two, and be ready to jump into book 2. It’s campy, it’s fun, and it reads like an 80s action movie. Don’t let the reviews telling you the setup is a drag and boring stop you from reading this book.
Eagle force: Contract for slaughter is an easy five stars.
Another in a long line of action team adventures. This coming in at the end of 80's when these where pretty much out of style. Four ex-soldiers and C.I.A. team up to rescue a wealthy man's daughter from terrorists in Norther Africa.
