A sequel to the acclaimed novel Sydney, Herself finds Sydney Downie in her junior year of high school, facing a series of problems including her mom's new marriage and pregnancy, a difficult new teacher, and trouble in her boyfriend's family.
Colby Rodowsky did an incredible job of bringing these characters to life! They're characters that will stay with you long after you've finished reading.
When the creative writing class became journalism, it reminded me that politics needs to stay out of schools. Without the help of their advisor, Sydney and her newspaper staff learn the ins and outs of journalism. I could see the trouble these kids were headed for with their newspaper and was proud of them for fixing the mess.
Colby does a great job of showing Sydney's struggles with the newspaper and glimpses into her home life and babysitting. Sydney keeps an ongoing correspondence with her more-than-a-friend Wally. While Sydney's family is growing, Wally's is falling apart. I'd love to read a follow-up book and learn how Wally's brother Porter fairs.
Sydney, Invincible goes on my "keep" shelf! That might be because I can relate to the main character. Sometimes you don't know you can do something until you're put in a situation and have to do it. I was impressed with Sydney's character.
If you enjoy loveable characters, good books, or journalism, you've got to read this book. You'll be glad you did.
