Film: An International History of the Medium

Rate this book
This comprehensive history of cinema from its origins to the present day treats the film medium as a global phenomenon with dynamic relationships among nations and cultures in all phases of its history. The text thoroughly covers the technological, aesthetic, and industrial history of films, but also emphasizes the mediums' interconnections with economic, social, and political movements and events. Relating the medium dynamically to other arts, society, economics, politics and culture, this volume shows how the history of film was shaped by wars, depression, regimes and events. The author provides a complete history of film from its beginnings with the emergence of cinema, the silent era and classic cinema, to the postwar transformation, the revival of cinema and the expansion of cinema today. For film fans and others involved in or interested in the history of film.

I had a hardcover copy of this and it is very special to me. I read it just as I got accepted into film school but didn't know anything yet and I wanted to get a head start of film history before my first year, highlighting many areas of the book. I learned so much from it and the photos are beautiful.
