No man is an island, but Marcus Battle is a man lost at sea.In the final chapter of the Amazon best-selling The Traveler Series, reluctant hero Marcus Battle is tasked with helping his friends escape the reach of an oppressive government.
His team is undermanned and outgunned in its efforts to reach the mythical refuge called "The Harbor." But they are relentless in their pursuit of freedom and, at long last, peace.
Can Battle find all that has eluded him since a deadly plague took his family and left him alone?
Or will the sins of his past drown him in regret and leave him adrift for the rest of his days?
It’s hard to say goodbye to a series that you’ve read eight books of. It’s also hard to put into words what that series has meant to you. Sure, this review is just for the last book – but it’s also a combination of how all eight books have made me feel. I can’t believe that after Harbor – I won’t have any more Marcus Battle in my life (until I re-read the series since I miss it). I also can’t believe that this series introduced me to one of my favorite authors and also one of my favorite narrators. I’m definitely going to miss it.
The story itself was exactly what I wanted out of the ending. For the first almost two-thirds – you wouldn’t have known it was a “farewell” book. It wasn’t like the finale of some shows where you can feel the whole last episode pandering to the fact that it’s over and you’ll never hear from these characters again. It might have even been longer – I wasn’t sure that anyone was going to make it out alive until very late in the book.
I won’t go into what Abrahams wrote or how the book ended, but I needed to say that it was perfect. In my own head, I wrote the ended and he was able to write an even better one. The ending was so incredibly satisfying that it had me in tears.
Harbor itself (minus the fact that it’s also a finale book) was great. It was perfectly paced with the great characters you’ve gotten close with throughout the series. Battle and Lou were both great in it. The other surrounded characters all had their places and were a perfect fit for the story. Another one of those characters may or may not have a similar (or the same) last name as one specific blogger… No name-calling or anything, but that was a really awesome inclusion and this blogger may be completely honored to have been included in such an amazing series.
Overall, Harbor was not only a fantastic addition to the series but it was also a great farewell to these wonderful characters. I’m sad because it’s over but I’m happy to have read it. I’m not good at goodbye’s so… see you soon Battle.
Action-packed, fast-paced adventure full of surprises!
A perfect ending for a great series. Marcus Battle and Lou are two of the best characters I have ever read about. Tom Abrahams is a great author who keeps your attention throughout this series. It was very difficult to put down this book. I am sorry it is over, but the ending is spectacular. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy reading! 😊
A very satisfying conclusion to a very satisfying series. Abrahams is one of my favorite authors of dystopian fiction so, after you read this final book in The Traveler Series, begin reading one of his other series.
I totally devoured this series in a few weeks, they are so, so good the main characters became my best friends, all books are extremely well written with just enough detail about the area, scenery and living conditions. I've adedTom Abrahams to my Authors list...
After following Marcus Battle through 8+ books, a whole whack of adventures and all the fascinating people he finds along the way,it's hard to say goodbye to such an immense personality. So I'm not going to. Ill just say well done to both Marcus and to Tom Abrahams. Also thanks for keeping the books so affordable. "
ALL eight novels are approximately a 70 hour listen - a post-apocalyptic world. A flea born pathogen, highly contagious, wipes out over two-thirds of the world population. There is no cure, but there is natural immunity. If you want the full experience, in sequence: Home, Canyon, Wall, Rising, Battle, Legacy, Hero, and finally Harbor.
Plot. Marcus Battle, a PTSD victim, returns to Texas and loses his son and wife to the plague; he speaks to them and hears them speak to him. Marcus also lives as a hermit on his land, defending it with shoot-first, so you don't need to ask questions. After months of solitude, Marcus rescues a woman being chased by a cult of marauders. The marauders have her son. They successfully burn Marcus's house down. Under a facade of revenge, Marcus and the woman set out to rescue her son and rid Texas of these thugs. The story has a considerable slice of flashbacks to Marcus' time in service - when he nearly dies to rescue his badly injured friend. Will Marcus conquer his own demons, rescue the boy of a stranger? Stay alive? Will he have a second family?
The story moves to Battle's father-daughter friendship with an orphaned, snarky, broken girl. Smart as they come, fiercely independent, able to sling a knife with lightning speed - Louise (Lou), is as damaged as Battle, having lost loved ones to the virulent infection and possies of opportunistic thugs. Lou and Battle's adventures traverse the years and the miles in search of a life without violence.
Liked. Good character development, easy to visualize action, well-organized plot over eight novels. No sex, no explicit language. Decent narration and production.
Not so hot. There are some holes in an apocalyptic world, in my opinion. Not much mention of shortages of essentials like gasoline, medicine, etc., all that would surely be horrific. No mention of tampons - hey, they will run out! Just sayin'. By the time the series ends, a span of 21 years since the plague, there is also a plethora of ammunition - who's making all this stuff? Lots and lots of double-tap gun violence. A bit slow tempo, but just pump the speed up a tad on your iPhone.
This is a long series, cliffhangers throughout - but, comes to a satisfactory conclusion with the final novel, Harbor.
Written by By Tom Abrahams, narrated by Kevin Pierce in unabridged audiobook format, released in March 2016-19 by Piton Press LLC.
Recommended - don't have to stretch the imagination much. This stuff could really happen, as we all now know with COVID19.
Okay, this is I think the tenth book I have read by Tom Abrahams, and I've always found him to be incredibly readable with interesting people doing things. I'm confident that when I pick up a Tom Abrahams book I'm at worst going to have a pretty good time.
That said, the Traveler series and Harbor in particular left me a little cold. We rejoin Marcus Battle who is once more called to save his friends from the sinister government agency seeking to oppress people because ... power corrupts, I guess. He's still suffering from PTSD from the loss of his family and the events of the first seven books, at least when he remembers to.
The timeframe is suitable (we're ~two decades after things all went south), but felt a little weird - Marcus is the grizzled veteran who remembers Syria, while the younger people who were little kids during the Scourge seem like they would be fine walking down a city street today.
The plot largely revolves around finding people who need to be shot (or, more accurately, waiting for them to come find you) and shooting them. When you shoot enough, the reward pops out, video game style, and we do meet my favourite* Abrahams character - the Magic Canadian who's infallibly polite, loves hockey, and talks about poutine, and shows up to render some small but vital assistance.
I feel Abrahams might be writing to a market rather than telling a story, and more strength to his arm if so - if you're part of that market you will like this story, and it seems plenty of people are. Me? I feel this could be boiled down to a pretty good 80s post apocalyptic movie, or maybe a sound adventure trilogy.
As I have read from other readers it was sad to read or listen to the last book. The author and narrator did an awesome job on this book. You get a glimpse into the future after 21 years after the Scourge killed so many people and how the US is no more and most likely other countries are the same way trying to survive day by day with what little they have and how it would feel to be in the dark ages and some places the old west but as today corrupt governments trying to get a hold in some many ways we see today thru cruelty, and so many other ways but as the books went thru you saw one government fall after another. The author brought all books together and rounded the story off from the beginning death and despair to hope and a brighter future with a new beginning and new friends and old one too and finally Marcus Battle admitting the one thing he kept running from and accepting the lost of family in the pass and the realizations he is getting old and can not live on old memories now it time to start new memories and forgive those who done him wrong. Rudy, Norma, Lou and Dallas come to realize also how important Marcus had to been to them and was always there for them even when they ask him to leave because to them he was nothing but trouble. He fought for them through Texas back to Atlanta and then to Harbor and at the end it look like he dies and but being Marcus he was not ready to go and he did not. It would have been good to have had another book to let the story end with what happen to people in Harbor and the what happen to the government out of Atlanta and the Populations guards after their leader was killed.
Marcus Battle has secluded himself in the backwoods of Virginia. He wants to stay as far away from trouble as he can. But Lou needs him. She is the one person that can pull him back into society. He will do what he must to help get her and her family safely to the Harbor.
Abrahams eight and final book in The Traveler series, Harbor brought out a lot of emotions from me. I laughed out loud as he helped Andrea. I cheered when Lou ran into Rickshaw. And, I cried first when Norma saw Battle and then again when he said his last words. These are the scenes that stand out the most to me.
This novel is probably the best of the series. It’s a bit philosophical in nature. I loved how Battle has aged. The back and forth between him and Lou always bring a smile to my face. And, the other story arcs are interwoven in such a way that they help move the story along.
The book could have been better edited. One whole chapter has the sun beaming down in the wrong direction. I hope that by the time you read this that all the errors will have been corrected.
Major Marcus Battle, US Army, Retired, fights his way across half the country
to get Lou safe in Harbor, the safe final stop of the Railroad. Modeled after the Underground Railroad of the 19th Century, instead of helping slaves escape to the North, this modern version helped fugitives from the Pop Guard to Harbor.
Once again the vibrantly colorful characters are the heart and soul of the story. I've never chuckled, chortled, guffawed, gasped, gulped, winced, whined or cried as much as I have reading this series! Oh, I forgot loved - I love this series! I love the storyline, the writing, the action, the settings, the characters - the Good were the best, the Bad were the worst, and the Ugly . . . well, you get the idea!
Don't take my word for it, read it for yourself and see!
I love the art of the story teller that is Tom Abraham's. He will lift the reader to a crescendo, suddenly plummeting to depths untold. Just when impact was imminent he dawns hope, bright and joyous. Adventure is his gift, satisfaction is the frequent result. Go ahead, I dare you to embark on this journey with him!! I double dare you! Lol!

Thi s isn't a review of Harbor, but instead it's a review of the entire eight volume Traveler Book series. Tom Abrahams has crafted an epic tale of death and life, loss and gain, failure and success and endings and beginnings. The series is a testament to the baseness, and the grandeur, of the human experience and takes you from the fall of everything one dismal step at a time outlining the evil that men do, while at the same time proving the possibility of heroes moving and living beside us making life possible because of what they do. Evil definitely exists, but so does goodness. Apocalyptic/Dystopian stories like this series show us what to fight against, and what to fight for. Abrahams' Traveler Books are an excellent read!
Without doubt the best bonus I have had during this lockdown is finding the Traveler series of audio books . From the first book the storyline captures you , the narration is top class . The books never fail to excite and entertain .
Its very rare you have a set of books that are all equally as good , I cannot select my favourite. The main thing is you have to read them in order.
Tom Abrahams is a rare talent who deserves to be read by a larger audience . I have now managed to obtain nearly all of his other novels and I'm looking forward to listening to them if they are half has good as this series I'm indeed in for a treat.
Sadly, this may be the last book in this truly magnificent series. Marcus Battle is a survivor. His grandfather made sure of that. As a general rule, anyone who crosses his path with bad intent dies. His family and loved ones are all gone. Taken painfully from him, he did his best to protect them. Now is only Lou, a young women he almost shot in their first meeting. They bonded and now respect and love each other. He now has an extended family through Lou and other survivors. A tremendous story of survival and perseverance. My highest recommendation
What would you do for family? This whole series is a question on how far and to what degree of protection you would go to keep family safe and do the right thing. Families are not together today like they were before the internet and tv. Look at yourself and ask the question how would I react if light went out and our government only cared about themselves and not the people of the United States of America. I have. That's one reason I contiue d to read this series. The author hit a nerve and I hope he will hit one with you.
I'm a reader not a writer so I've no adequate words to describe my feelings for the conclusion of this journey with Marcus Battle. It was so worth the heartache, the surprise, the guilt associated with reading instead of chores! Take this journey if you have not already! Tom Abrahams has yet to disappoint! May we all.find out Harbor! Good bye Marcus! You will always be my Hero!
This final book for me was really a 3.5 as it seemed to have a lot of padding, in addition to having some odd coincidences. Two women are giving birth at the the same time seemed to be more of a mechanism to put Battle in a place outside his comfort zone. It seemed like there were a lot of weak links in the underground railroad where just catching the right person nearly caused the whole thing to collapse. Still, I have enjoyed this series as a whole and I'm happy it ended on a good note.
For being the last book in the series, it did a great job of wrapping things up and bringing things full circle but i just gotta be honest and say this was my least liked book of the series, i couldn't get into the villians in this book or the additional characters and even some of the basic characters annoyed me in this one... but it wraps the series up neatly and i loved the other books so much that it was worth reading the ending. So two thumbs up!
It sounds as though it is a biography even though it is fiction. What a story, so well told that I could hardly put it down! Too many late nights but it was really worth it. When it appeared Marcus was dead I couldn’t hold back the tears! My only critique is just a few too many “hawked a loogy”s. I recommend the Travelers to anyone looking for action and adventure!
This truly was an awesome series. Harbor put lots of thing together, Lou had another baby boy. There was still a lot of fighting action against Population Guards, against tribes and thieves. It is hard knowing this is the last book in the series, but it was such a different apocalyptic series than any others I have read. I recommend all eight books in the series. Thank you Mr. Abrahams for wring such a great series.
I’m home… Marcus Battle who lived several lives before and after the Scourge was finally home and what a journey it was. Tom Abrahams did a splendid job creating this character and the story of his life. Lou was home too but in a different way. She also was a survivor of the Scourge and now she had her family to live with and enjoy. This series was my introduction to Tom Abrahams and I’m looking forward to more!
As I read this installment, I couldn't help but look in the mirror at the older version of the man that left for boot camp many years ago. And see the changes in myself as I do in Marcus. His adventure through this series was one taken for "family",as has mine. A fitting end to this series with Marcus finally finding what he had been searching for, home!
From the first page of the first book to the last this is a great story. The epic adventure never loses its focus or attachment to the characters. The action is well written and crisp. I highly recommended reading the series in its entirety but any of the books are well worth your time. Thank you Mr Abraham for a great story.
I read all nine books and I enjoyed each and every one. Each book picked up where the last one ended. Loved the characters especially Marcus. We all need a Marcus in our life. Take charge, protective, no nonsense kind of guy! I couldn’t help but get immersed in each one. Hated that they ended.

I have not loved a dystopia fiction series this much since Margaret Atwood' s Maddaddam trilogy. I loved Marcus Battle, the ultimate survivor and hero. I cannot recommend this series enough! Enjoy! I know I will read them all again.
Tom Abrahams' The Traveler Series has ended. The tears are flowing at the ending, even as I laughed at the scene on the raft. Well done, Tom. Well done!
I was in love with Marcus from the beginning to the end. Caught up immediately in this story, how could you not?, And just carried my kindle everywhere. Just finished and missing Lou and Marcus already. You did good, Mr Abrahams.
I usually don't read series that exceed 3 books and I got really ticked with the way Tom started book 3 and it took me too weeks to go back and read the book. I liked the characters and the flow of the story. I will be reading more Tom Abrahams books.
