As part of the national reform movement aimed at improving geographic education at all levels, a symposium entitled "The First Research in Geographic Education" was convened in May of 1997 at Southwest Texas State University. A number of leading scholars in geography and related fields were brought together to discuss the frontiers of research in geography education. This group prepared a number of review papers in five areas; 1) spatial and developmental learning, 2) curriculum, 3) maps and learning, 4) assessment, and 5) geographic learning among special populations. These review papers appear in this volume.
