A world famous composer is introduced to a melodic fragment with the power to alter reality. He composes an orchestral invocation, which, if successful, will induce Lucifer to appear before a packed new-year's-eve gala audience.
Two men, one a gifted composer, the other a peevish misanthrope, meet during their college years and become lifelong friends. The composer, Paul Schofeld, whose meteoric career brings to mind a young Sibelius, is introduced to a melodic fragment with the power to manipulate reality. He becomes fascinated with the trick and focusses the full force of his prodigious talent on developing his occult powers. His friend Søren Ambrose disapproves but can do nothing to stop his larger than life companion.
The more Schofeld works with the strange melody, the more he understands that thoughts have real and measurable effects. He learns to control and direct his mind with power and accuracy. To some it seems he can perform feats of magic. Ambrose fears Schofeld has made a pact with the devil.
Though dark forces appear to shadow both Schofeld and Ambrose, interfering with and complicating their lives, nothing can deter Schofeld from his pursuit of arcane knowledge. When he is honored with the commission of the a world premier with the L.A. Philharmonic on New Years Eve, he seizes the opportunity to perform a major invocation. Whether the work summons archangel Lucifer or not, Schofeld remains confident it will be his magnum opus. Ambrose, on the other hand, worries that whatever the outcome, his friend’s eternal soul is doomed.
What arises is something no one could have complete and utter . . . transformation .
