An undersized 12-year-old, his single mom and a new coach--a former Cubs first-round draft pick--unite in pursuit of love and the Iowa Little League state championship.
The perfect vacation read! Once again I took one of Kerri Casey’s novels and read it while vacationing with family at Campers Paradise in Nevis Minnesota. Casey hits a homer in this heart-warming underdog story. Thanks for another great vacation!
Take two chapters and call me in the morning... If the world has you feeling a bit out of sorts, forget the Tylenol and do yourself a favor by reading Kerry Casey's new book, Runt. I finally understand what makes baseball such a perfect metaphor for life: The gift of committed and selfless teachers who see your spark. People who teach you about hard work, loyalty, fair play and fun. Accepting tough breaks and moving on. And thinking beyond yourself by walking in the other guy's shoes without letting the other guy walk all over you. More than anything, it's about mining everything great that lives down inside of you. Sure, there are black-hearted weasels out there working to trip your scramble for the plate, but if you think positively, work the plan, put your head down and run like crazy, well, things will probably be OK. Maybe even better than OK. Susan H - Hayward, WI
A great summer read. If you like baseball, boys and dogs with a little romance thrown in, you will enjoy this book. Things may work out a little too easily, but if you can forgive that, you will enjoy the book. Lots of tips for little league coaches.
I couldn’t put “Runt” down! Kerry Casey has brilliantly captured the romance and humor of everyday life in this timeless story of underdogs (and we’re all underdogs), fairness, hard work, bad luck, tragedy, relationships, feeling the grass beneath our feet, and new beginnings. Knowing that the things that are precious to a 12 year old boy are the same as the things that matter to all of us - acceptance, accomplishment, love, fun. Kerry knows the mind of a great coach and shares the wisdom that morale is everything- a great lesson for leaders in all walks of life. Thank you for an entertaining book that was both a true joy to read and one that will stick with me as I play parent, aunt, cousin, and manager/leader. Karin Roof
A good book is like a good knuckleball – you never know where it’s going, but it’s great fun tracking the trajectory along the way. On its surface, this is a ‘baseball’ book. But more than that, it is a story of friendship (of both the people and animal kind), humanity, adversity, trust, tragedy, romance and redemption. So, if stories like that appeal to you, I suggest you pick up a copy of Runt. With his eye for subtle detail, dry sense of humor and undeniable love for the underdog, Kerry Casey has exquisitely captured the essence of life in small town, Midwest America. To put it concisely, Runt is a dazzler!
As with Fall to Grace by the same author, this book is filled with indelible characters (which may remind you of people you know) and the long memories of small-town residents which can never forget either a transgression nor a good deed. Small towns are places which some people dream of escaping, but also come with the familiarity that makes them feel like home. There is nothing like a small town to come together to embrace the underdog, nor to freely judge someone who thinks too highly of themselves; this book has plenty of both. I live in a big-hearted small town, and I would never live anywhere else.
Blessed to meet this creative author and purchased this book and his trilogy of MN books last year. I work in rescue and love baseball and Runt fit those joys to a T. A great book to gift to my reader friends of all ages. Love story, mystery life lessons and more. Hate when these great stories come to an end. Casey’s additional three: Fall to Grace, Singer, and Slender Wish sure hit me in the heart. Joy filled stories but tested my hope at times. Great characters and left me wanting more.
Kerry Casey writes another home run. He never disappoints his readers, or let's them down. His way of writing developing characters makes you want them for next store neighbors, or live in their town. He is one of my top favorite authors. When ever I recommends his book to people, they always are glad I did. All his books are about plain people, who live extraordinary lifes. Do yourself a huge favor and read "Runt". Then after that read his other books, you'll be glad you did.)
This is a delightful novel for anyone who loves baseball and cheering mightily for an underdog. When a new coach comes to a small town in Iowa to coach their 12 year old’s traveling baseball team, he breathes new life into the program. This coaching change might also give the pint-sized Truman a chance to make the team.
While the story is fairly predictable, it is nonetheless delightful. It’s certainly a novel all youth coaches should read.
This was absolutely charming. Such a heartwarming story about character, resilience, and a pure passion for baseball. Having lived in Iowa and being a Cubs fan, it was fun to read about the setting in Small Town, Iowa and the fact that the coach was a former Cubs player. Was worth every minute of my time and I'm sad that it's done.
Loved this book! The authors descriptions made it seem like I was part of the story. Smell the fresh cut grass, envision the baseball field and the kids learning how to become and stay "positive". I wish there was a sequel to it......😊
I have read the Fall to Grace series and just finished the latest release Runt and thoroughly enjoy the creative writing of Kerry Casey. Keep up the good work Kerry.
