The Roops live in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Roop has woven an engaging story with a glimpse into Sioux culture and lots of worthwhile lessons. I think the kids will like this book. It's a keeper.
Farnsworth's illustrations are well-done and will help kids visualize the setting.
Little Blaze wants to lead the buffalo off the cliff this year but his older brother will get to lead them stampeding buffalo. Little Blaze must do a brave deed in order to gain a grownup name and he gets the chance during the stampede.
I was pleased to find this book. It's a great story to introduce the concept of a buffalo jump to children. Especially since I live near a historic buffalo jump. One inconsistency was after all the buffalo jumped to their deaths (or mostly to death) it was quiet. When we went to the buffalo jump and spoke with park rangers they said it was loud. Often times not all the animals were killed only maimed. These would be kept alive sometimes for a few days while the multiple gathered tribes butchered the dead animals first keeping the meat fresh as long as possible. I understand why they aren't historically accurate here in a child's story.
The tone is cheesy and alienating but I guess Roop (a children's lit guy not a native American studies guy) did the minimum research for historical accuracy and a portion of proceeds go to bison habitat protection.
Bought this in Glacier National Park the day before visiting Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Fort MacLeod in Alberta, Canada. The site itself and Interpretive Centre are amazing and well worth visiting if you find yourself in the area.
