Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Darn it, Vegeta! Such a cocky and delusional Saiyan. However, thanks to him, we get to see what Trunks is hiding and what Goku will eventually bring to the battlefield (or should I just say... the Cell Games).

It's Vegeta's turn to make a mess of things. You'd think he would have figured out how things go by now, what with how it went with Frieza: he even complained about Cell being smaller and cuter even though he's already been there! A far cry from the canny, brutal guerilla warrior he was on Namek.

The fight itself is good, visceral, cathartic... but my enjoyment of it really is rather dampened knowing how it ends and how it ultimately doesn't serve much of a purpose at all. I do like how Cell is actually still hurt, though.

Again, if Trunks had joined in beforehand, Saiyan pride be damned...

It’s probably because the androids are wiped out in this volume, but I’m starting to like Dragon Ball Z again!

Vegeta and Trunks emerge from the Chamber of Spirit and Time, fully levelled-up, to take on Cell. Vegeta fights Cell alone but, even though he’s able to best him easily, he allows Cell to remain alive to absorb Android #18 and assume his final form. Because he’s a dumb Saiyan Warrior who only wants to fight extremely powerful beings!

Actually it’s not totally Vegeta’s fault that the world might be doomed; Kuririn had his shot too but he didn’t take it because #18 kissed him once and he fancies her now - aww! Noseless boy loves the robot girl!

For the most part, Akira Toriyama’s writing is perfect for this series, but the dialogue he gives Trunks is among the clunkiest I’ve read in modern comics. Every single thing he says is a massive load of exposition that reads like Toriyama’s notes for the story rather than remotely realistic dialogue for a teenager to say.

Son Goku and Son Gohan enter the Chamber of Spirit and Time to begin their year of training (which, outside the chamber, is just a single day) with Goku training Gohan to become a Super Saiyan. Their only major plot development is Goku cutting Gohan’s hair, which is the right thing to do - Gohan’s hair looked like a freakin’ giant black porcupine perched on his head! All of the Saiyan’s hair styles are all totally bizarre but his was the strangest!

That’s pretty much the whole volume. Lots of enjoyable, frenetic fighting between Cell and Vegeta, small advancements of the other plot strands, and the androids are all gone - hurray! Please let them stay gone! With his many transformations and lizard-like appearance, Cell does seem very reminiscent of Freeza, so maybe that’s why I’m enjoying this arc more - it’s the kind of storyline Toriyama can do really well so that’s what he’s going back to do.

Volume 16 is an improvement but given the overall poor quality of the Cell arc, that’s not saying much. I’m hoping Goku beats Cell soon and we can get to the next, hopefully much better, villain.

Okay I know I said a while back that Vegeta is one of my all time favorite Dragon Ball Z characters ever. And he is but let me tell you this had to be one of the stupidest decisions he has ever made in the series, letting Cell become perfect. Now that isn't to say it is all on him because Krillin is also stupid for destroying that remote control that would have put an end to Android 18.

It's confirmed on page 1 guys! Vegeta and Trunks came out 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈😍😍😍

The first half is 2 star material: decent action, decent moments, the character motivations make sense, etc., but the training arc portion makes up the extra star. Some of the funniest jokes the series has had in a while, fun set up, good art, etc.

Bringing back the dragon balls again is downright maddening and it isn't very scary or shocking that Cell is pure evil with no motivation when we've basically already done this twice with original Piccolo and Freeza. You're not gonna top Freeza with the same archetype, so why try?

Didn't these used to be maybe 25 pages and cost a dime? Here, we get 200 pages of VOK! and DMM! and BOOMF! Maybe there is ten pages of story. But definitely I am not the target audience. Good illustration work though!

This one is a tough one to rate. Vegeta surpasses his own records of stupidity when, after breaking through the Super Saiyan form in the Chamber of Spirit and Time he defeats Cell easily and in a burst of Saiyan insanity he decides to spare Cell to let him attain his final form - just for the fun of fighting the Perfect Cell. As much as this decision conforms to Vegeta's character, I can't help but notice how it neatly sets up the final confrontation. Similarly, poor lovestruck Kuririn seems to be making only bad decisions here, just like Vegeta - all just to make Cell unbeatable. As such, this volume clearly prepares ground for the subsequent showdown.

Tenshinhan gets his moment to shine here, though, and it's great; and then Goku saves the day for both him and Piccolo, and does it without throwing even one punch - perfect. Plus, Goku and Gohan's quality time is very sweet!

And let's say it, both fights between Vegeta and Cell are actually really enjoyable. The only detraction is that we know they're not final.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) This evil creature named Cell has appeared creating havoc in the world as he is trying to absorb Androids #17 & 18.

(II) Trunks who is the son of Vegeta and Bulma come from the future and help Goku in order to guarantee a better future.

(III) Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunks head to the Room of Spirit and Time to train and surpass the Super Saiyan level in order to beat Cell.

That is what you missed on Dragon Ball Z!

This volume was fascinating between the epic fighting sequences and how the storyline will develop for the upcoming volumes. I personally did not care much about the androids storyline because it is ridiculous the concept that robots can kill Goku who is practically Superman. The good thing is that for Akira Toriyama's redemption is to kill these androids to serve a greater purpose.

As Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunks are training at Kami-Sama's place, the rest of the time has to fight in order to help delay time for their arrival to come and kick ass. Vegeta and Trunks are the first to train inside the chamber and when they come out, Vegeta and his pride has reached a new level as they leave the chambers and head towards the fight. Vegeta surpassed the Super Saiyan level which will later be known as Super Saiyan 2 (Yes I know how original) and a big surprise later on which is Trunks has achieve that same level too but in power he has surpassed his father which he is embarrassed because he doesn't want to hurt his father's pride.

Vegeta takes the first chance to fight Cell and Vegeta is actually whooping some ass which I am extremely glad about but he becomes ignorant halfway into the fight because he wants to fight Cell in his true form. The androids are in hiding for a long period of time but Kuririn blew their cover when he discovered their location. Bulma was able to create a remote control that will disable the androids leaving them available for the attack and when Kuririn finds them he is unable to use the remote because he has fallen in love with Android #18 so he personally sabotages it.

Meanwhile that encounter Cell and Vegeta make the connection of the androids presence and Cell was lucky enough to reach his true potential. With all the countless transformations he has made in these volumes I will abmit that I love him in this final one because he reminds me of Freeza and how polish his character looks. I feel like the more these villains look less hideous, the more deadly and powerful they truly are. Now that the score is even, Vegeta is trying to defeat Cell but he is no match for him and almost dies in the line of battle.

Trunks in the end realizes that he is the only one who can save his father but he needs to transform to Super Saiyan 2 without his father presence. I did not like that before Vegeta was knocked out unconscious, Trunks was a wimp because he didn't want to hurt his father pride and I understand where he is coming from but Vegeta could have easily died and then we would had this long dialogue of Trunks couldn't save his father and etc.

We won't see Trunks potential until the next volume and this storyline is becoming very familiar for me especially with Trunks transformation and the Cell games that will come in the next volume. Other than that I believe that Akira Toriyama is getting better in his storytelling in each volume and while he brings familiar elements in this series, I for one will agree that I love every minute of this series and I cannot get enough of Goku and the gang. Stay tuned for more until next time on Dragon Ball Z...

This volume was so awesome, we finally see the real strength of cell and his fight with vegeta is epic and we see how powerful he has become and then there is the thing with the saiyan pride, 18 absorption and all that follows and how they continue to fight but cell is on a whole different level than anyone now. His perfect form is here. This volume was cool in the sense that we had awesome fights which are quick and get s much exposition about cell and then Gohan becoming a super saiyan in the chamber of time and space! Great volume and the art was again fantastic and action packed!

Dragon Ball (Vol 16):

Great action, Cell is a great villain. The androids prove to be complex than initially thought. Toriyama’s spell-binding in hai story telling, managing to weave an intricate plot and many characters into a great story while at surface level it seems so silly.

I’m looking forward to pressing on and finishing the series in the next few weeks.

This was a fantastic read. The story just gets better and better. Also, the characters are amazing and I love reading about the heroes that are in the Dragon Ball franchise. In the volume, Semi-Perfect Cell continues his quest to reach Perfect form. I finally got to see two new Super Saiyans to accompany Goku and Vegeta. They are also trying to find a way to win the android threat as well. It was very interesting to see Kuririn so affected by Android 18. Can't wait to see him get defeated. This was another amazing installment to the series. I can't wait for Volume 17. Overall, an incredible read.

This is definitely another transitional volume as it's primarily buildup for that last chapter. Trunks and Vegeta exit the Room of Spirit and Time looking to be in rough shape with torn clothing and marred skin...not to mention Trunks' new ponytail. Vegeta merely smirks at Goku when asked if he was able to push past the Super Saiyan barrier...but Trunk confirms it can and has been accomplished. And their off to fight Cell! Super Vegeta seemingly has this fight won as he easily bests Semi-Perfect Cell blow for blow. Before he can deliver the finishing move though, Cell whines that if only he had absorbed 18 he'd be Perfect and unbeatable. Vegeta's Saiyan Pride is goaded and he allows Cell to search and obtain the final android and complete his transformation. Kuririn was given a universal remote that will shut down 18, thus making her useless to Cell...when he gets within range his heart gets the better of him though and he destroys the remote, urging her to flee. The distraction reveals her location and with a Flash move, Cell absorbs her and transforms to his final form. Suddenly Vegeta is child's play and he's quickly knocked out. Now Trunks is up and he can go beyond the level Vegeta just revealed.
And that's the volume. Lots of action Piccolo was taken out and Kuririn apparently had feelings for an android. Perfect Cell is a lot easier on the eyes than the other two gross looking forms and he's alot tougher. The stakes have been raised again. We do get the briefest of flashes to Goku and Gohan in the Room of Spirit and Time, but it's mostly them trying to push Gohan to become a super saiyan because Goku thinks that'll make him stronger than even himself. Not a bad volume by far, I'm just anxious to get to the good stuff ahead! :)

So Vegeta has emerged from the Room of Spirit and Time with Trunks, and they have transferred Super Saiyans now. It's always kind of fascinating how Toriyama finds ways to keep the team from being available all at once for fights.

Usually it is Goku recovering somewhere or having to travel long distances and not being able to make it in time, or training or coming back from the underworld or whatever.

Vegeta and Trunks spent a day (which is a year to them) in the Room. When Vegeta demanded that he go in first, I didn't like it and wondered why Goku agreed to it. But when it played out, it made for a lot more drama. Trunks and Vegeta just spent a year together, but all may not be well between the two. As things stand now, Cell is a very interesting villain and Vegeta just can't resist fighting the best so... Well, for a genius, he certainly lets his fighting instinct get in the way of his intellect, because Cell has become way too powerful for him now.

Imagine having such a self-destructive trait that you would empower your enemies just to see if you could beat them at their best.

I have other self-destructive traits but not that one. Anyway...

And now Goku and Gohan are in the Room. I think when Toriyama plots these he has to just get a whiteboard and come up with as many possible reasons as possible for why Goku can't be in every fight.
He's got to recover from heart disease for 10 days, he's got to travel and train in space for 6 days, he's got to train in the underworld for a year, he's got to enter the Room of Spirit and Time...

Also, how powerful is Trunks?

Next....

More Cell Saga, good stuff.

Vegeta’s Saiyan pride once again absolutely fucks him over as he lets Cell live to absorb 18 and become his ultimate form, and weirdly this moment of his didn’t annoy me nearly as much as previous similar examples of this.

What does kind of annoy me is the use of Krillin in this arc tho? I understand him not wanting to kill 18 and I do enjoy the Androids as characters so this was fine. But it being because of romantic feelings just feels awfully convenient and simple? While he was very much at the forefront of the Freeza Saga, it does feel like Toriyama isn’t completely sure how to use him in this one (as well as a fair few of the very large cast present) due to just how insanely large the scale and power difference is. I mean he is in the fight for a single page and gets absolutely destroyed the moment he engages, theres not much for him to do. But it’s a big shame because I have been really surprised how Krillin has become one of my favourite characters over these past 2 arcs, especially considering how little I cared for him in the OG run.

I do hope we see a lot more of Goku and Gohan training in the room. I would love to see the differences between their relationship and Vegeta+Trunks impacts their trading efficiency. I wonder if Gohan is struggling with the Super Saiyan state as it requires an intense rage and Goku is so incredibly kind to him. I think this would be a really interesting idea to explore within their dynamic and I hope it gives both of them growth.

Oh and Android 18 is gone now. I do hope her and 17 return somehow, but until then let’s see what Trunks can do…

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.

As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.

Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.

While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.

I wish the Super Saiyan transformations made any real sense. So Vegeta broke the Super Saiyan barrier to become “Super Vegeta”, which still isn’t as strong as Trunks’s steroid saiyan, and neither of these are considered “Super Saiyan 2?” Huh? Maybe Super Vegeta is Super Saiyan 2 but Gohan’s transformation is naturally stronger? You see how confusing this is?

Other than that, I love how much of a hopeless romantic Kuririn is and it makes sense why they got married later on. And I love seeing Goku training Gohan. It’s nice and wholesome, they needed some father-son time finally. It’s basically one of the first times in the series where we see them really interact for long stretches of time. I want more of it.

Can we also talk about the senzu beans? It’s really hard for any big attack to have oomph if it can be reversed instantly. And it never seems like they’re really running out of beans either. Kuririn’s neck gets broken, guys. And he’s healed in two pages. It’s so lazy…

But Vegeta is dope, Cell’s perfect form is dope, I’m a man of simple pleasures.

EN Cell has already absorbed one of the Androids, becoming more powerful than them.

Vegeta and Trunks return immensely strengthened after spending a year training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, even surpassing Cell himself. However, in his boundless arrogance, Vegeta allows the enemy to complete his final transformation, making him now far stronger than Vegeta.

Meanwhile, Son Goku and Son Gohan also begin their training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

--

Vegeta vs. Cell is an all-out MUST SEE BATTLE! Akira Toriyama continues to raise the stakes and the art is both fluid and tight! Krillian is faced with a terrible decision he must make…and Goku and Gohan are off training in preparation “if needed” to face off against Cell. This volume indeed has it all and then some! I find myself unsure if it is best to give this a 4 star or a 5 star…but eventually settled at 4. Cell also becomes….PERFECT CELL! This is by far and away my favorite villain character design thus far in Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z! This battle truly is one for the history books and each page feels very weighty on the impact of the universes fate! The fate of the universe is at risk and the stakes cannot be any higher. This volume have you itching to open the next one!

I really like how Akira weaves in Kuririn to make each situation unique and to not just make it all about power levels. Because this arc is much about power level and always exceeding one’s previous self. It becomes a bit predictable. But then there’s Kuririn, who is way weaker than everyone else but still manages to become part of the plot. It’s a nice twist to it all!
And despite this arc only being about raising one’s power level, it is fantastic that we get a scene of Cell b**ching out (for lack of a better word) about not reaching his ultimate power level, and Vegeta indulging him in it. Very fun!

(3.5) The past few volumes were pretty meh for me, and it actually made me quite sad, because the story felt really aimless, the characters less interesting, and it just made me long for the earlier volumes, pre-Z, because I loved those. Cell's introduction definitely spiced things up, and objectively this volume probably deserves a higher rating, but as someone who favors the early volumes (this, I've learned, is a divide among Dragonball fans) it doesn't quite hold a candle to, say, DB volume 15 or DBZ volume 11.
