I needed a break, so I took off to my friend’s cabin for a few days for some peace and quiet. Instead, I found an injured woman in the woods claiming to be a lost hiker. I immediately knew there was more to her story, and I was right, but the bombshell she dropped was the last thing I expected.
Layla
I wasn’t sure how much more I could take. After losing my mother, my life drastically changed, and I found myself escaping from one bad situation only to land right in the middle of another. I was alone and lost, and it seemed like every person I met tried to take advantage of me. When a sexy, beast of a man appeared out of nowhere and came to my rescue with guns blazing, I didn’t know whether to trust him or run screaming. Ultimately, I ran, but he followed and refused to let me go.
This is the first book in the Devil Springs Blackwings MC Series. It is heavily tied to the Blackwings MC Series. You can start with Copper, but there are references to characters and events from the previous series that may take away from your reading experience. I recommend starting with Dash (Blackwings MC Book One).
Adult Content Warning: This book is intended for readers 18 years and older. It contains adult language, explicit sex, and violence.
Teagan Brooks lives in the Southeast US with her husband and their daughter.
She loves all things girly, particularly makeup, high heels, and purses, but also has a passion for guns, knives, motorcycles, and muscle cars.
When she isn't in front of her computer writing, she can be found with her family on their boat in one of the nearby lakes.
Teagan is very friendly and loves connecting with others. Please don't hesitate to send her a friend request or follow her on Goodreads, Facebook, and Amazon.
First 40% is good… plot is going, romance is simmering, everything flows and is logical. I’m interested. Then, the entire thing collapses.
Halfway mark is slow going. Too many calls, repeated convos between various parties, and time spent doing nothing. But, I’m still reading and waiting for the point here.
The FMC feels like a schizophrenic… docile and submissive one minute and running off to be TSTL the next. Angry at help… angry at being kept in the dark. Loving to hostile. Smart to stupid. It’s like a rollercoaster, and it becomes too much work. By the end of the book, no one knows anything more about her life prior to the book starting…. You mean she didn’t have a single fucking friend, coworker, neighbor, schoolmate, no one in her life prior to her mom’s funeral? What kind of work did she do? A half ass mention that she did part time bartending in the past but that’s it. How did she support herself? I can’t tell you a single thing about HER other than a family tree. That’s just sloppy character building.
The MMC starts alpha and turns to what would happen if Hulk was shot in the dick by Cupid. Again, outside of his family tree, reader is left knowing NOTHING about him.
The romance goes from 0 -100 with no chemistry build. It’s an I hate you situation to ‘oh, why don’t we screw’ to damn ILY cause you’re hot. Heat is 2 outta 10.
Just how many secret kids can one guy have?
Supposed to be a standalone- first book in the series, but there are clearly multiple backstories that the reader is clueless about about a shit load of secondary characters.
After 50%, a lot of the plot push just isn’t realistic. For example, the FMC can’t be told about x because it’s “club business” (really it’s so the author has an angst point) but the MMC tells her about many other club facets freely.
The MMC’s language and word choices are awkward and inauthentic to a MC guy. He sounds like a college kid, not MC. And, no, throwing in curse words around that speech pattern doesn’t make it any more authentic.
The injuries the author used should have been properly researched. The recoveries were ridiculous.
The plot climax and resolution is out of nowhere. Literally, the characters are kidnapped out of thin air. No how, when, where - a chapter just suddenly appears, and the story reaches its peak and resolve in a couple of random pages.
Potential, but it falls on its ass in a pool of nonsense, cliches, inauthenticity, and stagnant kaboom plot.
On a positive note, the grammatical side is great.
I'm happy to share that this book (and hopefully the series too) has improved a lot, in terms of writing style. There's descriptive writing going on as well as the telling was now a showing. Both main characters has a cutesy meet-cute moment even if that time wasn't really a good time for the heroine.
I also love how this book ties back to the original Blackwings MC series. I highly suggest you start with that series (starting with Dash #1) before reading this as the story arcs from them to this series.
And just what got me hooked on the Blackwings MC, it got me hooked in this spin-off too and that's the story core is solid and well-woven.
This is the first book in the Blackwings MC: Devil Springs Chapter Series by Teagan Brooks. I have been anxious to know more about Copper, Bronze, and Judge since Dash’s book. Copper Black is the President of the Devil Springs Chapter of the Blackwings MC and also Phoenix Black’s cousin. He’s in desperate need of a relaxing vacation so he heads to Badger’s (VP of Croftridge) secluded cabin in the woods. His first night there he rescues a woman from two vicious wild boars. Instead of being grateful to him she tries to run away but she doesn’t get far because one of the boars gored her leg. Layla is running from three very dangerous men and she’ll do whatever it takes to stay hidden from them. Copper may have saved her life but that doesn’t mean she trusts him so she gives him a fake name. The more secrets Copper uncovers about Layla the more intrigued by her he becomes.
“ I’m not going to hurt you. You don’t need to be scared of me.” “ Says the man who hit me, restrained me with tape, and threatened to lock me in a bedroom. Tell me, when do the whips and chains appear ?”
Copper decides to head to the his friends cabin for a little bit of a rest and relaxation, what he finds is a woman screaming her head off and hurt. Copper steps in to fix her by the woman is crafty and tries to escape. Copper realizes she is hiding something and he wants to know what.
Layla is trying to keep herself safe, trusting Copper is not easy but the more she gets to know him the more she realizes he and his Blackwings MC will protect her at every cost. Who knew a really bad situation might turn into the best thing to ever happen to her.
This was a wonderful start to the series. Layla is fearful and trying her best to survive. I thought she was bright and although initially drove Copper nuts, they work. One sit down read.
Ngl, I genuinely feel that you have to read the other series that's tied to this series to get the full picture, which sucks imo.
My main issue with this book is none other than Layla. I disliked her immensely. First and foremost, her reactions were not at all productive to her survival or the survival of others. This book consisted of a lot of moments where she was described as shrieking.
I absolutely hate that word. Mainly because I view it as a word that is associated with hysterical. Whenever she shrieked, I saw it as her being hysterical and I was right in my assumptions. She was genuinely hysterical over EVERYTHING. You would think that survival mode would have kicked in and she would be able to handle situations better.
Furthermore, some bullshit was pulled near the end of the story and I just did not like the completely unrealistic reactions given by the other characters. This isn't a fantasy novel, so there is no excuse for the stupidity of these reactions. I would have been completely angered regardless of what said person meant to me.
And finally, the writing was choppy in regard to the transitions used in between scenes. There was no smooth path leading into the next part of the story and that just sucked.
All in all, it gets one star from me. While it is claimed that you can read this book as a standalone, it's honestly too heavily tied to the other series to actively be enjoyed. The way I see it is we face the frame of the painting, but not the actual painting itself unless you read that other series in order to get the full picture.
I loved Copper and Bronze in all the other Blackwings MC books but was really disappointed in the storyline in this one. First he didn't flow seamlessly, it was forced drama imo & how many more of Gnaws children gonna keep popping up? Between the drama and story flow I repeatedly re-read a sentence/paragraphs to understand what/who I was reading about. I don't like to be confused about characters/story while reading. Least favorite in this series so far & I do consider it apart of a series even if it does say book 1. You must read the First set of Blackwings MC books or possibly be more confused reading this book than me. And I've read all the books!!! I may or may not read next book.😡😥
Teagan you did it again!! This book has so much to it. We get a mystery with A LOT of twists and turns. We get some romance with some action that could melt your sheets, AND best of all we get Copper.
Copper is the president of the Blackwings MC Devil Springs chapter. He decides he needs a few days away to rejuvenate. While he is away he meets Layla who has more secrets than any one person should have. She has been through so much in the last few months of her life. I will not go into great detail, because I don't want to give anything away.
Another amazing book by Tegan Brooks! I loved Copper and Layla! They had great chemistry. The story was fast paced and interesting all the way through. I loved getting a peak at how the other Blackwings was doing as well.
If you’re already invested in the main Blackwings MC series like I am, you’ll probably enjoy this. It makes the most sense if you’ve read all those books because more than anything, this feels a bit like a continuation of that series. If you didn’t like that series, you probably won’t like this one. The style is more or less the same. The heroines are all a bit young with traumatic histories, the heroes are all a bit blockheaded but underneath caring. They’re mid-level toxic and violent so easy enough to read by MC romance standards which can be quite dark and tough. I more or less liked Copper and Layla. I felt that they were a good match once Copper got over himself and his initial toxicity at the beginning. The linkages between the families are getting a bit much and beginning to be a little too much coincidence. But if you’re willing to suspend disbelief, not bad at all. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Teagan Brooks has done it again with copper giving us the feels and wanting a fictional character we can't have. Like in every book of Teagans she delivers a story that has twists and turns and just when you figured out whats going on "BOOM" your back to picking your jaw up off the ground and shaking your head because you never see it coming. Copper and Laylahs story is one full of heartache, secrets ,regrets and love. Teagan Brooks never disapoints she always ups the anty in every book making each one better then the last. If you haven't started this series yet your really doing your selves an injustice. Brotherhood, family , extremely hot alpha bikers and the women they would lay down their lives for you can't ask for better then that. Five star read from me.
Copper! Found out that Teagan released this book so like any sane person I immediately downloaded. I was so excited to finally find out about the other chapter of the Blackwings MC and I loved this book. Copper is everything I knew he would be and more. I liked him and Layla together but she pissed me off not trusting him enough but at least she realized her error quickly and wasn't too stubborn. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this new couple. Can't wait for the next book. Love Teagan's writing style.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I loved Copper and Layla. A woman who has had a rough patch of luck with more disappointments than most people could take. A MC president that leads with a firm hand but just needs more but he doesn’t know what exactly. Fantastic club interaction and action. An attraction that can’t be ignored. This is a great start to a new series. Can’t wait for more!
*WARNING* contains explicit adult sexual situations and violence I have been following these book since book one of the Blackwings MC. This series with Copper and the Devil's Spring branch of Blackwings is going to be just as good! The plotline is excellently woven and is a delight to turn page after page to watch unravel.
I loved this book and all the twist and wtf moments that came!!! Copper is the younger version of his cousin Phoenix... or as Phoenix puts it Copper is always trying to be like him... I cant wait for more from this club chapter!!!
I love the continuing story of the mc and the ever growing family. I have reread every book so far art least twice and can never get enough! I loved Layla and her inner strength!
Another awesome Blackwings book! Copper and Kayla are an awesome intense read. I had use both kindled I didn't want to put it down! The heat, intensity and love is insane!! Ms Brooks has done another awesome read.
Got to love a sexy, loyal alpha biker who has a soft spot for injured women, lol. Love this series and loved this book. I think Layla was perfect for Copper, really grounded him. Now onto Judge!!!
It was a great read, lots of unexpected events and I love that in a book. Copper and Layla were great together. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Let me start by talking about the things that I did like. Editing and grammar were spot-on, which seems so hard to find any more. I loved the characters. Even though in trouble and making self preservation poor choices, the heroine was not some whiny, immature, drama queen. I liked the other characters as well, although there were a lot to keep up with. No cliffhangers!Definitely a place for the story to continue with new main characters, but the book is completed.
Things harder for me to like.... There are a LOT of different twists and turns. Almost too much to keep up with at times and at other times getting hard to believe. Although this book is the first of a series, it is a series that is a spin off of another and although they give a quick synopsis of background to other characters, there were still times that you felt as if you were missing part of the story.
The hardest thing for me to get behind..... This is about the softest MC story you will find. If you are looking for an MC romance intro this would be a good one, but for a reader who has MC romance as one of my favorite genres, this was to the point of unbelievable in that aspect. The lack of true hierarchy, the constant use of “proper grammar”, no profanity and no alpha tendencies just isn’t realistic in this lifestyle. I was able to finish the book, but it was also an issue that will keep me from reading the rest of the series.
I actually quit at 87%. At this point it was so unbelievably ridiculous. I'm sorry but all these strangers happen to stumble upon the same MC (even if it's another chapter) then they just happen to be Annabel 's sister and later a brother. One crazy guy kidnaps 1 presidents old lady while she sleeping on the back porch, same old lady gets kidnapped by the same guy 2 chapters later, from a safe house that the FBI put her in, at the same time he kidnapped Annabel, and kidnapped the president of the blackwings, while he was sleeping. This author no longer even has an imagination. It's like she is high out of her mind and let the drugs write for her. Her other books about Phoenix 's MC chapter were very borderline ridiculous but this one blows them away. 100% done with Teagen Brooks and her brand of crazy.
If I can go into a book and slap the beejesus outta someone it would be Layla Holy Moly this woman has serious anger issues and her attitude just thew me off not to like her all
I was also confused with the mixing of previous characters from the other series and this one it was just way too many names popping up and sometimes I was just stuck on who I was reading about idk if it’s just me
Like always my lovely bookworms safe reading and remember to always be nice to one another 😊🤗
One minute, Copper was talking to Phoenix (Ch 29), and in "his" next chapter (Ch 31), he was Asp's prisoner. Same goes for Layla. Chapter 30 has her talking to Phoenix in the safe house - and all of a sudden, her AND Anabelle are also held by Asp. How? When? I feel like a couple of chapters have been cut out of the story - even throughout the hastily told end of this book, no explanation was given.
I'm not going to start on all the children Gnaw must have fathered ....
Hot wicked 😋 Fourth read through just as wicked as the first time
Oooh my copper goes to his mates cabin to get away from it all for a bit being prez of Blackwings Devil Springs MC chapter whilst there he finds a woman who is she why is she hiding out.
Layla she got free from them but now on the run and hiding in a bunker until she's attacked by a wild Boar and gets saved by Copper.
Will he be able to help her with his MC and the help from the mother chapter.
Oooh my so much happens you need to read to find out it is such a wicked series loving it 🏍🏍❤❤❤
It’s frustrating to read like you are supposed to know all the characters even though it’s book 1?? There are no descriptions or background it just goes straight into each scene. I felt no real emotion whilst reading and there was no romance just lust. Kayla was very unlivable as she stomps around like a 2 year old then jumping to conclusions about everything I feel sorry for copper and hope the lust runs it’s course quickly...
Hmm. Not my type of MC book. Very immature. It seems like the love story was based on what a young teenager could only guess what love should be about or experience. A lot of the scenes described were very cliche that I guessed almost immediately what the next paragraph would say. Lots of eye rolling on my part.
