This plot is very well thought out and the author does a brilliant job of presenting it in this book. I was captivated from the very start of the book to the very end. It’s a definite page turner and has a fast pace throughout. The characters are well developed and believable as they struggle to come to terms with their new reality. This book is a reminder that even with the best laid plans there is no guarantee that everything shall go smoothly as these survivors find out when they end up in the fight for their lives. This is a thrilling and intense read and a must for anyone who loves this genre! Being the first book I have read by this author I am certainly going to be searching more out if this is the caliber of her writing.

Charlie and Ethan and TEOTWAWKI

They met in college, as adults. Both overcoming painful pasts. They married, eventually. Then came The Pulse.
Life in the ‘burbs ended and their mutual knowledge will be needed to survive what follows.
Numerous spelling/gramatical errors slowed down the story and brought about a 4-star review.

A big surprise

I’m not big on apocalyptic fiction or movies. When I saw this book being offered and I read the synopsis, I thought it was worth the read. I’m glad I did. It’s suspenseful with lots of action. Once you start reading, it will be hard to put it down.

Great Book

I really liked this book. It shows how quickly things would deteriorate. It also shows how violent some people could be. It was and interesting read. I would definitely recommend this book!

Thrilling from start to finish!

Charlie and Ethan have been planning for the worst for years. When an EMP hits, they get out of the city and head to their homestead where they must fight to survive. Very thrilling, thought-provoking book about what could happen!

One of the better EMP indies

I’m reading all of the Amazon EMP in a powerless world series in order. This book was a refreshing boost in writing compared to the last two in the series, which were pretty horrible. I wish I could give this 4 1/2 stars, because there were a few grammatical errors and writing errors…but not enough to give it only four stars, considering the last two books in the series were so disastrously bad. So I had to go with a five star on this one. I’ve read some of the very low reviews on this book, and I kind of have to disagree with some of their points. It was actually refreshing to see that people would just go with the flow during an EMP event instead of worrying about who did it and why. We all seem to forget that it could possibly occur simply from a large solar flare, and have nothing to do with war. This book focused more on the sociological aspect, society breaking down, people choosing actions, right and wrong, etc.. I also thought the writing was a step above the average author in this EMP series.

The author could’ve been a little bit more descriptive. I had trouble imagining what the characters, buildings, and landscape, looked like. There were only a few minor plot discrepancies, most of them were corrected by some explanation within a few sentences. This book is a few years old already, so I’m interested to see if this author has improved on these very small shortcomings…I’ll have to read one of her most recent books, and find out!

Disaster strikes in the form of an EMP leaving Charlie to find her husband Ethan and stepdaughter, Grace, in the middle of chaos and danger. Ethan has always been a preppier so they flee to their homestead in the country. They try.to fortify their ranch and feel they are prepared to ride out the worst of the chaos. But. it does not work out that way as a gang of scavengers is bent on killing them and taking everything they have.

This is an action packed post apocalyptic book that is filled with the violence and chaos that happens when society breaks down. The characters are well crafted and.full of personality complete with strengths and weakness, compassion and cruelty. The author shows the range of human responses from the best to the worst of humanity. Trust is no longer an option leading to a great deal of fear and uncertainty. The story is told from Charlie’s point of view. The narrative is great, giving a excellent description of the action and insights into her thoughts, feelings and emotions. The storyline is fast paced with with non stop action and suspense. I enjoyed this glimpse into how a family deals with almost a war type environment.

The writing was pretty good in this book, especially since it was done in a first person narrative which seems to be a bit harder for many authors to get right. There were a few lag spots, and I found it a bit odd in the camp where the family met Dr Peterman, that they seemed ready to engage in a philosophical conversation about how people weren't prepared etc. Grace seemed a bit preternatural for a girl her age. Even given that she is more mature and her parents included her in planning etc, I found it odd that she did not really have episodes of fright etc. For most of the book, the EMP was more a mechanism to remove constraints of law enforcement and lucky for Charlie and her family, Dexter was not very bright and gave them far too many chances to think things over. I was also surprised by Ethan with his background and his focus on "prepping" had very little in the way of weapons and ammo. The ending wrapped up fairly quickly. Even with all that, the writing style made this an entertaining book to read.

My review job is easy today. The post-apocalyptic plot of The Pulse is pretty fun and action-packed. But the book falls down in three important areas:
1) The writing style is stark. We're often left without any details about people, places, and things. This is so pronounced that it's kind of weird, actually.
2) It's rarely funny. Why so serious on a plot-oriented book like this?
3) And finally, the tech isn't smart. There's no real explanation of the pulse or why it happened. The plot has action but isn't particularly interesting.

QOTD

“Nobody’s phones are working,” he said, frustrated. Sweat had formed on his balding pate, and he was heavy enough that his apparent stress made me concerned for his health. “Nobody’s phones, or cars. I can’t start my car. It’s like some sick cosmic joke.”

- some chaos in The Pulse

Not a good read. thanks...yow, bill

I read a lot of EMP survival stories and this one is among the best. I enjoyed the story and learned a bit too. Just the other day, a coworker was making fun of someone because they are a prepper and someone else really put him in his place. Seriously, an EMP is so possible (as opposed to a zombie apocalypse) but so is just hurricanes, earthquakes (they happen everywhere), and other natural disasters. How about war - we KNOW that's possible? I am not the best prepper but I learn from fiction what may be done and it's amazing how accurate these stories could be.

Always interested in how an author writes his story of life after an EMP, I also hope all of these authors are wrong, but don't think they will be.
This one is pretty good and hard to put down. They are prepared for an EMP and manage to get to their place of refuge, where life is stressfull but manageable. Then the "fit hits the shan" if you get my drift. This book does not address life after the EMP event plus about six months.
Still, this is a very good and thought provoking story, and you should read and think about it.

Entertaining

It’s an interesting storyline with a nice plot. Ethan is an apocalyptic novelist and somewhat of a prepper. But after so long preparing he missed one of the most important items.. food, water, shelter, guns and ammunition. He had only one rifle and a few handguns and not nearly enough ammo. Not so prepared after all. He almost lost everything.

I gave 4 stars because it needs editing. A few places the story became a bit confusing.

OK

This seemed to be a good post apocalyptic and the writing is pretty good. I didn't finish because I realized that I wasn't in the mood for the genre (sub-genre, or whatever). I may go back to it if ever I'm in the mood for an end of the world story.

The main character was well written and made me believe the story at least as far as I got.

Amazing

This was one of the best written post EMP books I have ever read! Great characters, well developed plot, the author didn't try and accomplish too much or hurry the ending. One of my pet peeves with this genre is editing and this book is very well edited, thank you! I look forward to reading many more by Skylar Finn!!!!

One of the best I've seen in a while.

This story could be so true in today's world. It is a shame but that is true.
I really enjoyed the writing style and the story line.
Skylar thank you so much for changing my world for a little while.
I read it while on a cruise in the evenings.

Amateurish.

This book was so un-realistic. I love post-apocalyptic stories but this was so off the charts unreal that I had to stop halfway through. I commend the author for writing without profanity.

Quite a read!

I was involved in this from the start. I especially liked the whole thing being told by the female narrator. The action never let up and I was right there with them through it all.

A novel but interesting read. Well done,!!

This is a story of 3 damaged people, damaged together. Ethan was damaged by his upbringing, Charlie by her first marriage, and Grace "just because", but together they made it work. Read it yourself to get the details. You'll glad you did!

Liked everything about this book ! Lots of action. A lot of violence for young people to read. Maybe...video games have more I think. It's a good read about love and determination.

From start to finish a great book! It could have used a little more on the story behind Ethan and his life before but still a believable read.
