I honestly didn’t expect this manga to take me on such an emotional rollercoaster. The premise is pretty wild, and it’s a one-shot with one main story (consisting of 3 parts) and two side stories, so I didn’t think much of it at first.

But wow, was I wrong. The author really knows how to tug at my heartstrings. Each story builds slowly, but before you know it, it’s grabbed hold of you and is squeezing your heart tight. If I were to judge it purely on the plot, it might not seem like much—but I rate based on how a story makes me feel, and this one absolutely earns a 4.5-5 stars.

Not For the Faint of Heart - Ninth Life Love Review

So this manga is incredibly cute. Kind of dark, actually, but very cute. The main story follows a boy who rescues a cat, and who connects with that cat completely, spending all his time with the cat, all his time until the cat is hit by a car and dies. And wow, that got dark fast. It's not to be the last time that they meet each other, though. The cat finds a way back, refusing to stay dead and so comes back as something like a mermaid, fully human but if the cat has sex then he will revert back to sea foam. The boy is older now, late teens and still missing his cat from so long ago, and at first he doesn't want to believe that this young man is the same as his beloved pet, but slowly he comes around. Slowly, slowly, until things progress and the catguy turns into sea foam. Like really, that's twice the two are separated and it is very tough at that point, because really! It's incredibly sweet but it toys with the heartstrings, managing a happy ending despite but getting there is still a roller coaster.

The other stories in the volume are a bit more fun and light and still very cute, but not quite as memorable as the longest of the stories. The art is quite good, though, the people a bit on the thin side, bodies elongated but it works and is cute and rather sexy when it chooses to be, which isn't incredibly often but there is enough sex in the volume to keep things interesting and to make up for teasing so much with my emotions. There's actually a very good sense of closure with the main story, which is surprising giving most of these manga have a tendency to leave things hanging. Not that I wouldn't totally read more of that couple, but it leaves them finally together, finally happy, adults and able to handle their love.

Indeed, that seems to be a lot of the point of the manga, that they have to grow into their love, that it has to wait until they're both adults, because as kids and as teens even they aren't ready for it, they can't quite handle the maturity required for them to be together. They have to learn to trust each other, to believe in each other, and they do and it's amazing. The characters are distinct and I liked both the doomed optimism of the cat and the wounded sternness of the young man, who it's obvious doesn't want to lose his love again even as he can't seem to keep him.

In the end, the volume proves to me that yaoi can be quite emotionally resonant even while being sexy and fun. This wasn't my favorite yaoi ever, and there are some pacing issues throughout, and the art wasn't quite what I was hoping for, but overall this is a sweet story that's well told and actually had me tearing up. But I'm a sap. I fully admit that. But this sap is still giving the volume an 8.25/10.

~4/5

First of all, this is not a very explicit book. There’s only one possible sex scene in it, near the end, and nothing is shown.

But this was such a cute, warmhearted book. And the artwork is very soft and pretty to look at. If you like the cover, you’ll like it.

The main story is about a boy who lost his cat when he was young, and he was very close to it. And then his cat comes back to life as a boy years later, and he doesn’t quite know how to handle it. But his human cat loves him wholeheartedly. Their story is so cute and so sweet, and the ending is perfect. There’s also a little extra about them at the end that is so sweet.

There’s only one other one-shot in this book, and it’s about a guy who falls in love with the florist in his town. It’s a very sweet story, too.

The artwork was very nice, and then the stories were really good too. I love the development of the characters, and none of it was rushed. Exactly what I was looking for, and done very well.

This book contains main story & 2 other side stories. I was so confused at first because those stories didn't make sense when one jumped into another. And there wasn't a clue until I read the back of the book & it says the story is about different people. The art style was cute though. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

Una serie de historias que a pesar de ser independientes, tienen la misma esencia. La primera historia se ambienta en misterio, romance y ternura. La segunda es mas cómica, nostalgia y entrañable. La tercera no recuerdo mucho pero fue entretenida.

Three stories, two short ones and one longer one.

The first story is an example of a short story that *works*, for once. Two guys meet at a club and it's love at first sight. Even though we don't get that many details, the characters just kinda clicked for me and I wanted them to work out even though I didn't spend a lot of time with them. It's not the Greatest Short Story Of All Times, but after reading so many mediocre and bad ones recently, this was refreshing. The second short story about a gay teacher and a florist is quite good as well.

The main story - well, see, I have this thing about characters with cat ears. Meaning I love them. So I'm kinda biased when it comes to this kind of story - a cat returns as a human to his owner after it died and they fall in love - but I found it really moving and cute and well done.

I haven't been too lucky when picking up BL manga recently, so this was a pleasant surprise. Not the Best Manga Ever, but I really liked it.

Simply put, it was cute, but not cute enough.

All the stories are lighthearted and aim to be sweet, however it is only half the cup of satisfaction. The characters are too nice and there is a lack of punch that makes nothing memorable.

There's three stories in the book: The first story was boring. The second story was just Weird if you think about it for a second (your dead cat came back to life to have sex with you!). The last story was actually pretty enjoyable.

The art is absolutely delightful. Lalako's art is very adorable and expressive.

The most memorable part of the book was being weirded out by everything in the titular story.

Neun Leben umfasst 3 Kurzgeschichten.

It's been a while since I've read this manga in English. But, I remember I really liked it and that I always got quite emotional while reading it (and I read it several times). However after reading the German edition I was a bit disappointed that I didn't feel the same... in some way the German translation lacked the emotional depth for me.

The title story left me cold (I would rec. Sentimental Garden Lover over this if you're looking for a cute cat story)... but I did REALLY enjoy the final (and unrelated) oneshot about a gay prep school teacher confessing to his neighborhood widow/florist.

It was okay. I didn't really care for the cat story that took up most of the volume but I thought the one about two club guys was cute. The florist one wasn't too bad either. 2 stars

I preferably liked, it was cute, the plot was simple but the way the three stories were placed is confusing. I love the art, and I know my yaoi fan friends will love it!
