About the author

Roger began his first novel on November 4th, 1987 and did not stop, except for three days when he was going through a divorce from his first wife, until July of 1993. During this time he completed twenty-two novels, most of them in longhand, and accumulated several hundred polite and complimentary rejection letters from many different and varied publishers.

He stopped writing out of sheer frustration and did not start again for eight years.

In the early part of September 2001 he decided to start writing again. This decision was based on the realization that it was the only thing he had ever really wanted to do.

Between August 2001 and January 2002 he wrote three books, the second of which was called ‘Candlemoth’. This was purchased by Orion and published in 2003. ‘Candlemoth’ was translated into German, Dutch and Italian, and has now also been purchased for translation in numerous other languages. The book also secured a nomination on the shortlist for the Crime Writers’ Association Steel Dagger for Best Thriller 2003. His second book, ‘Ghostheart’, was released in 2004, and his third book, ‘A Quiet Vendetta’, was released in August 2005. In 2006 he published ‘City of Lies’, and once again secured a nomination for the CWA Steel Dagger for Best Thriller of that year. His fifth book – ‘A Quiet Belief In Angels’ - was published in August 2006, and in the latter part of the year it was selected for the phenomenally successful British TV equivalent of the Oprah Winfrey Book Club, the Richard and Judy Book Club.

‘A Quiet Belief In Angels’ went on to be shortlisted for the Barry Award for Best British Crime Fiction, the 813 Trophy, the Quebec Booksellers’ Prize, The Europeen Du Point Crime Fiction Prize, and was winner of the Inaugural Prix Roman Noir Nouvel Observateur. It has since been voted Best Thriller of 2009 in The Strand Magazine. The book was also optioned for film, and Roger has recently completed the screenplay for Oscar-winning French director, Olivier Dahan.

Following on from ‘A Quiet Belief In Angels’, Roger released ‘A Simple Act of Violence’, again securing a nomination for Best British Crime Fiction of 2008. In late 2009 he released ‘The Anniversary Man’ to rave reviews.

So another atmospheric, unrelenting but also gently flowing read from the pen of one of my favourite authors – another book from him that I just sat down and devoured. Honestly if ever there were books that should come with chocolate, it’s ones written by R J Ellory.

In Mockingbird Songs there is a definite correlation between the writing and the music – in fact the giveaway came with music attached in the form of Low Country and I’m almost as in love with those songs as I am with the book so atmospherically speaking this was a terrific overall experience for me.

On a more traditional book review note – the story was emotionally raw and very addictive, taking as it does the heart of a disturbing sibling relationship, adding in small town politics and power struggles and giving us a main protagonist in Henry that can view all this initially from a distance and take us with him into to the soul of the narrative.

As we jump between past and present, as Henry remains ever determined to deliver a letter he has been trusted with, the story unfolds at a pitch perfect pace, the characters grow and become real and there is a level of authenticity here that not many authors can pull off, no not many at all. Here is one of them.

The writing is beautiful and as always has a sharp literary edge – you really do just sink into that time and place and live every moment. A snapshot of a different era, true noir written with a modern eye for detail – there is so much to love here I can’t even think how to describe it all so I won’t try I’ll just say Yep.

As never fails to happen I was an emotional wet heap by the time I got to the end – as I said recently to someone who will recognise themselves should they read this review – I prefer the soul shredders. This was one of those. Again.

Whilst “Candlemoth” I think will always remain my favourite Ellory novel for reasons that are purely personal, I would put Mockingbird Songs up there as another I shall return to several times. It just had that “something” – I think it was probably Henry if I’m honest – that means it will stay with me. Genuinely character driven, intriguing and always taking you inexorably towards a conclusion that hits hard for any number of reasons – this is another author I have made a lifetime commitment to.

J'adore cet auteur non-conventionnel. Apre à lire mais passionnant. Son vécu personnel merveilleusement traduit dans ses récits. Prenant du début à la fin. Et en même temps une douleur à chaque page de dialogues, et ils sont multiples et palpitants. Mais pourquoi ce parti-pris de transcrire ces dialogues en quasi phonétique? On connaît le contexte, le niveau intellectuellement limité des personnages, qui ne s'expriment pas dans une langue académique parfaite. Mais pourquoi transcrire ces dialogues dans un langage débile, dépourvu de syntaxe, de ponctuation, de négations? Pénible, insupportable. C'est une façon de croire le lecteur incapable de comprendre le contexte limité intellectuellement. Je tenterai encore un Ellory, superbe narrateur, mais arrêterai la lecture s'il s'obstine dans cette écriture phonétique insupportable. Et, sans ces dialogues pénibles dans leur forme, ce roman vaut 5 étoiles.

I really enjoyed reading this thriller and would recommend it.

Henry Quinn, two days before his eighteenth, birthday was charged as an adult. He was drunk, and fired a handgun at Sally O'Brien's neck. Henry got three-to-five years in Reeves County Farm Prison.

Henry shared his prison cell with a country singer called Evan Riggs. He knew the man and his albums, but he did not know of Riggs whereabouts.

Evan Rigg had already served seventeen years of a life sentence for the murder of Forrest Weatherby in an Austin hotel corridor in July of 1950. On the day Henry is released from prison he promises Evan that he will find the daughter that he never met and deliver his letter to her.

This story set in an utterly convincing 1960 rural America is a jaw dropping good thriller by British writer Roger Ellory.

Yet again I find myself saying the same thing about R J Ellory's books. Simply stunning.
Something about the writing style hooks you in from the very opening paragraph, and before too long you find it a tad inconvenient when you have to stop for some reason.
The stories that Ellory weaves, get right inside your psych, and each day it's almost a mission that you simply have to get back to his latest tale, to get to grips with what's happening next.

This latest story continues the theme, with Henry Quinn, just released from prison after three years, feels duty bound to deliver a letter for a fellow prisoner, Evan Riggs, who's virtually saved Quinn's life whilst inside.
The letter from lifer, Riggs, for a daughter he's never seen, will cause utter mayhem when Quinn returns to the town where Evan's brother is the sheriff, and all kinds of cover ups are looking ominous.

The sheriff, Carson Riggs, is ruling the town with an iron fist, and makes a tough adversary for Quinn, who, as he keeps repeating himself, only wants to deliver a letter!

Don't miss this story. It's not all guns-a-blazing but it it's a town full of intrigue and secrets well hidden.

Henry Quinn sort de prison avec une mission: retrouver la fille d'Evan Riggs, un détenu avec qui il partageait sa chambre. Henry veut retrouver Sarah afin de lui remettre une lettre de son père Evan. Le hic, c'est qu'il n'a pas d'autre information sur elle que son prénom. Il va donc dans le bled texan d'où provient Riggs. Henry se bute au shérif du village, Carson Riggs, le frère d'Evan. Manifestement, les deux frères ne sont pas en bons termes et Henry se rend rapidement compte que tout le monde dans ce village protège de lourds secrets. Mais Henry Quinn n'abandonne pas et déterre ce qui est enfoui, grâce à la collaboration étroite d'Evie Chandler, qu'il a rencontré lors de sa première soirée dans cette contrée. C'est un bon roman. J'ai trouvé que le début était un peu lent, mais après une centaine de pages, c'était très difficile pour moi de fermer le bouquin. R. J. Ellory signe un autre très bon thriller.

Gelukkig weer een goede Ellory, na zijn verbijsterend slechte voorlaatste boek – Een Circus van Schimmen, dat was een echte miskleun. Mijn lievelingsroman van hem is Bekraste zielen. Daarin vertelt hij het gewelddadige verhaal van twee broers van dezelfde mama maar verschillende papa’s. Qua karakter zijn ze zo tegengesteld als wit en zwart. De ene is een echte engel, de andere een ware duivel. De vraag of karakters worden gevormd door de genen of door de opvoeding werd in die roman subliem en psychologisch sterk uitgewerkt. Hier krijg je het ietwat gelijkaardige verhaal van twee broers die verliefd worden op dezelfde vrouw. Bovendien is de oudste jaloers op de jongste omdat die door zijn veel aangenamer karakter altijd meer liefde en aandacht heeft gekregen. Combineer dat met ongecontroleerde wraakzucht en machtsgeilheid en je krijgt de poppen aan het dansen. Mooi gestructureerd verhaal. Spannend en menselijk.

2ème roman de Ellory que je lis et je dois dire qu'il fait dorénavant parti de mes top auteurs. C'est un conteur hors-pair et ses autres livres seront tous bientôt dans ma PAL. "Le chant de l'assassin" est un roman noir puissant, alternant une narration passé-présent. Le rythme est lent mais pour notre plus grand bonheur. L'auteur prend son temps et nous développe une intrigue dramatique et des personnages très profonds, très réalistes, un peu à la manière de D. Lehane. J'ai refermé ce livre avec beaucoup de regret et un sentiment de manque. Et ça, pour moi, c'est rare et ce que j'appelle un coup de cœur.

En partant, Henry a une lettre qu’il doit remettre à la fille d’Evan.

Où nous emmène cette fois RJ Ellory dans la noirceur humaine ? Bien après tous les auteurs lecteurs de l’auteur, j’ai attendu plusieurs semaines avant de me plonger dans le roman de l’auteur. Et je pense avoir bien fait d’avoir attendu mes vacances pour le lire. Je ne sais pas si je l’aurais apprécié autant, surtout qu’il faut s’accrocher à la lecture sur les 50 premières pages. Car à chaque fois, personne ne sait où nous emmène RJ Ellory. Mais dès que c’est fait, le roman ne se lâche absolument pas.

Comme toujours, une qualité de personnages impressionnante, un lieu bien évidemment reculé au Texas, une histoire de famille, l’histoire de deux frères et d’une jeune fille, l’histoire d’une quête, une histoire politique et de gros sous, une histoire de musique.

Henry a passé plus de trois ans en prison. Pour connaître le temps réel, lisez Ellory, le maître du détail sur n’importe quel sujet. Evan était son co-détenu. Evan est en prison sans possibilité de libération. Evan lui a laissé une lettre à remettre à sa fille. Henry est un garçon fiable, sur qui on peut compter. Il a fait une promesse et il s’y tiendra. On assiste à l’implication d’Henry coûte que coûte, concernant cette promesse. Il continuera sa vie après, c’est ce qu’il a décidé. Il doit tant à Evan pendant son séjour en prison. Et ces quelques jours lui apprendront énormément sur la nature humaine, hors des murs d’une prison. J’ai toujours eu peur qu’Henry retourne en prison. On le sait, les anciens taulards sont mal vus, ils peuvent plonger dans n’importe quel guêpier tendu et il est très facile de leur coller n’importe quoi sur le dos.

La construction du roman d’Ellory fait un parallèle entre Henry et sa quête et la vie d’Evan avant sa condamnation. Parallèle pour mieux nous induire en erreur, pour que le lecteur pense qu’Evan et Henry se ressemblent ? Possible surtout avec cet amour de la musique qui les lie. Mais au contraire d’Evan qui a sorti un disque qui a formidablement bien marché, Henry a tout à prouver. Et ce sera après sa quête et la remise de cette lettre. Henry est un jeune homme tenace, très intelligent, qui a perdu trois ans de sa vie si l’on peut dire. Mais sans ces trois ans, il ne lui arrivera pas ce qui lui arrive. Henry rencontrera Evie, une jeune fille qui l’aidera dans sa quête car en plus, elle connaît pas mal de monde dans le coin et surtout elle est fonceuse. Pour remettre cette lettre, Henry devra rencontrer Carson, le frère d’Evan, le shérif de la ville. Et alors là, cela ne sera pas une partie de plaisir. En nous racontant la vie d’Evan depuis sa naissance, RJ Ellory s’attache à nous raconter la vie de tous les membres de la famille d’Evan, ses parents et surtout son frère. Les relations d’une fratrie ne sont pas toujours faciles, on le sait, mais quand elles débutent de cette façon, elles le sont encore moins. Je ne donne pas raison aux agissements de Carson, mais on peut comprendre son cheminement. Mais un être humain naît déjà avec son caractère. Carson, au cours de sa vie, a su saisir toutes les opportunités qui se présentaient à lui pour devenir ce qu’il est. Bien entendu, il n’a pas été aidé par Rebecca, sa femme et son amie de toujours. Rebecca, qui a rencontré les deux frères alors qu’ils étaient tous les trois adolescents. Une jeune fille qui n’a pas su choisir entre les deux frères. Elle recherchait à fonder une famille, à vivre une vie tranquille. Mais Evan n’a jamais voulu rester dans cet endroit, il a toujours voulu parcourir le monde, enfin son état, vivre de sa musique, ne jamais s’attacher. Il était un musicien qui a su écrire de nombreux textes, il a quand même vécu l’enfer et plongé dans l’alcoolisme.

Un roman qui est un véritable coup de coeur pour moi, je vais écrire comme d’habitude avec Ellory. J’adore cet auteur, j’adore son style, j’adore comment il traite la psychologie de ces personnages, des évènements d’une vie que tout le monde peut expérimenter, des lieux où il situe ses histoires, souvent aux Etats-Unis. On a toujours l’impression qu’il connait ce pays, comme sa poche, surtout ces endroits reculés. Quand le lecteur est habitué au style de l’auteur, il trouvera toujours des remarques sur chacune des situations, remarques que tout le monde peut dire, mais qui trouvent tout leur sens, à chaque fois.

Je ne pouvais pas finir cette critique sur ce roman aussi musical. Tous ceux qui suivent assidûment RJ Ellory savent que l’auteur est également un musicien, que son groupe The Whiskey Poets se produit très souvent. Et d’ailleurs, le nom du groupe apparait plusieurs fois dans ce roman.

Setting: Texas, USA; 1918-1972.
In 1972, teenager Henry Quinn is about to be released from Reeves County Farm Prison having completed a three-year sentence for unintentional wounding with a firearm. He only survived his time in prison thanks to the interventions of his cellmate, former country & western singer Evan Riggs, who is serving life without parole for killing a man by beating. So, when Evan asks Henry to do him a favour after leaving prison, Henry feels obliged to do so.
The task does not seem too onerous - find Evan's estranged daughter, Sarah, and deliver a letter to her. Evan instructs him to start in the town of Calvary where he was brought up and where his older brother Carson is sheriff. But Carson claims to have no knowledge of Sarah's whereabouts and it soon becomes clear that Henry's enquiries are not welcomed by Carson who, having been sheriff for over 30 years, has the town totally under his control and apparently has secrets that he doesn't wish to become known. Working with local girl Evie, who has little time for Carson, Henry continues to upset Carson with his persistent enquiries....
This was a great story, jumping back and forth in time from Henry making enquiries in 1972 to Evan's family and his upbringing in Calvary with his parents and older brother from 1918 on. I have read several books by this author and had mixed feelings about them - but this was certainly one of the best and, if it hadn't been for a somewhat disappointing ending, could well have been a 5-star read for me. Nevertheless, it was a totally gripping read which I really enjoyed and well worth a high 4-star rating - 9/10.

Excellent roman noir ! Captivant, sombre, réaliste… On a envie d’hocher la tête pour essayer de rassurer les personnages.

« En vieillissant, on se rend compte qu’il reste seulement deux types de personne, Quill. Ceux qui disent pourquoi, et ceux qui disent pourquoi pas. Et toi, que diras-tu de ton demain ? ».

Cela semblerait banal, mais cette citation m’a vraiment marqué. Ces quelques mots confirment une réalité plutôt complexe. Quand on y pense deux secondes, il existe tellement de zones grises entre ces deux pourquoi. On dirait qu’en gardant ces propos en tête, on est amené à reconsidérer chaque action/émotion des personnages que l’on rencontre dans le récit. Il m’a d’ailleurs été plus difficile de catégoriser les coupables des victimes. À quelque part, je trouve que cette citation à quelque chose de vrai dans notre monde.

Sinon, c’est la première fois que je lis un roman de cet auteur et je retiens qu’il a une superbe plume. Tout est si doux, triste et dur à la fois. J’ai pu voir des paysages texans mélancoliques à profusion et des conditions difficiles pour des hommes et des femmes à l’aube des années 40. Côté roman noir, on est donc plus que servi !

J’ai aussi beaucoup aimé les deux points de vue du récit ! Quill et Riggs sont différents en tout point, mais étrangement semblables également. D’ailleurs, la traduction française du titre ne rend pas justice à l’essence de l’histoire. « Mockingbird songs », il me semble que tout repose justement sur la caractéristique qui différencie cet oiseau des autres. En tout cas !

Un très grand roman noir, un homme face à une ville protégeant jalousement ses secrets par intérêt... ou par peur...
Quelle puissance, quelle profondeur des personnages...
Rien à voir avec les romans de gare qui fleurissent. le point fort de ce roman et de l'auteur de manière générale est de transcender l'histoire qui est déjà intéressante en soi, pour en faire une oeuvre littéraire. J'entends par là une oeuvre dont l'écriture est un régal et où les sentiments sont exprimés de manière souvent percutante par le biais d'une formule dont la justesse est l'apanage des grands écrivains. Il s'agisse là qu'un roman qui parle de relations humaines, d'amour et du déchirement familial, je recommande aux amateurs de belles plumes...

A thrilling read from beginning to end. One story takes place during seven days in 1972. It alternates with the events leading up to this week starting in the 1920's when the parents of Evan and Carson meet, marry and start a family. Often in a book that alternates chapter to chapter from one story to another there is a preference to one of two story lines. Not so for me in this book. Both lines wanted me to come back to it. Which made me read an entire day, wanting to know more. Makes me wonder about the other 12 books he wrote....

J'ai trouvé le rythme un peu long au début avec pas mal de répétitions sur certains chapitres. En revanche à partir de la moitié du livre tout s'enchaîne très vite et on veut avoir le fin mot de l'histoire.
J'ai trouvé certaines choses prévisibles, d'autres moins, et je suis satisfaite que l'auteur ai apporté quelques nuances à ses personnages. Dans l'ensemble j'ai beaucoup aimé l'ambiance du livre, avec les nombreux secrets et ce côté "conspiration" qui persiste tout au long se l'histoire

Une histoire de secrets bien gardés dans une petite bourgade du West Texas qui vont peu à peu remonter à la surface grâce à la ténacité d'un jeune homme qui sort de prison. Sur fond de musique country avec comme décor le sud profond des USA de la fin des années 60, on se laisse prendre et on a envie d'aller au bout malgré quelques longueurs et clichés. Du bon Ellory malgré tout.

1972 - Drie jaar lang zat Henry Quinn in Reeves County Farm Prison. Hij heeft al die tijd zijn cel gedeeld met Evan Riggs, een tot levenslang veroordeelde moordenaar. De twee mannen hadden ondanks hun verschil in leeftijd, achtergrond en veroordeling ontzettend veel met elkaar gemeen. Beide hebben een voorliefde voor muziek, zijn echte nomaden, altijd op zoek naar zichzelf. Evan heeft het leven van Henry gered, letterlijk, door er voor hem te zijn op een moment dat deze op het verkeerde tijdstip op de verkeerde plaats was. Henry is er de man naar om hiervoor bij Evan in het krijt te staan en ooit zijn schuld in te lossen. Op de dag van Henry’s vrijlating vraagt Evan hem een brief te bezorgen aan zijn dochter. In die drie jaar heeft hij het nooit over een dochter gehad en Henry is dan ook verbaasd. Kende hij deze man van weinig woorden dan zo slecht? Toch belooft hij de brief te zullen bezorgen. De enige aanwijzingen die hij meekrijgt zijn de woonplaats waar zijn broer Carson sheriff is en de naam van zijn dochter, Sarah. Meer weet Evan ook niet en daar moet Henry het mee doen.

Henry verlaat de gevangenis en na een tussenstop bij zijn moeder gaat hij naar Calvary, Texas. Het stadje lijkt wel stil te hebben gestaan in de tijd. Vergane glorie is misschien wel de beste omschrijving voor de sfeer die er hangt. Volgens Evan is zijn broer hier al dertig jaar sheriff en is hij de aangewezen persoon om Henry verder te helpen met zijn zoektocht. Hoe anders pakt dit uit! Henry valt van de ene verbazing in de andere en merkt al snel dat hij in een stinkende poel van verderf staat te roeren. Hij ontmoet diverse personen maar de boodschap is overal hetzelfde: stop met vragen stellen over de familie Riggs, je bent hier niet welkom. De ijzeren hand van sheriff Carson zelf is nog wat duidelijker…..Maar Henry heeft de belofte nu eenmaal gedaan en zal hem ook inlossen, hoe dan ook. Henry is niet onder de indruk van de reacties die zijn komst oproepen, integendeel zelfs. Gelukkig krijgt hij ook wat hulp maar die is schaars en kwetsbaar.

Een ongelukkige samenloop van omstandigheden kan een leven totaal veranderen. Die boodschap is luid en duidelijk aanwezig in dit prachtige levensverhaal van Evan, Henry en hun families. Beslissingen die worden genomen om allerlei redenen zoals haat en liefde, macht en jaloezie, rijkdom en armoede. Ellory vertelt het leven van de twee mannen op een dusdanige manier dat ze heel dichtbij komen. Hij zet ze menselijk, kwetsbaar en daarmee heel toegankelijk neer. Ellory beschrijft deze elementen zo integer en zo authentiek dat je zowel Evan als Henry meteen in je hart sluit. Wat ze op hun kerfstok hebben doet er niet toe. Henry verlaat de gevangenis een levensles rijker, maar nog steeds is hij een integere man. En zo gaat hij, met zijn belofte en gitaarkoffer op pad om zijn belofte aan Evan in te lossen. Zonder enig idee wat er op zijn pad gaat komen is hij voornemens zijn belofte na te komen. Die dosis naïviteit maakt Henry sympathiek maar je merkt aan de spanningsopbouw dat er nog heel wat staat te komen. Bij aankomst in het stadje komt Henry dan ook al snel van een koude kermis thuis. De ontvangst is allesbehalve hartverwarmend te noemen, bewoners zijn terughoudend, met vlagen zelfs vijandig. En dan maakt Henry eindelijk kennis met Carson Riggs. Maar in plaats van antwoorden te vinden komen er alleen maar vragen bij. Henry kan en wil dit niet loslaten en Carson zet zijn cowboylaarzen flink in het zand. Maar waarom? Wat is er zo geheim aan de relatie tussen de twee broers dat Henry geen vragen mag stellen? De macht van Carson reikt blijkbaar ver en bemoeilijkt de zoektocht naar Sarah. Maar er is meer…..zoveel meer.

De schrijfstijl van Ellory is ronduit fenomenaal. Dit is gewoon een van de beste schrijvers van deze tijd! In dit verhaal beschrijft hij om en om een hoofdstuk over Henry of Evan, zowel in het heden (dat zich afspeelt in 1972) als in de flashbacks. Deze laatste gaan terug tot aan het prille begin van de levens van beide mannen, soms zelfs nog een stukje daarvoor. Hierdoor krijg je een perfecte kijk in de leefomstandigheden van die tijd en hoe de mannen zijn opgegroeid, een essentieel onderdeel in dit verhaal. Alles wat Ellory met je deelt over zowel Evan als Henry dient zijn doel voor dit prachtige boek. Gedoseerd krijg je steeds meer te weten waarom de mensen handelen zoals ze doen. Het verhaal van de familie Riggs is werkelijk ontroerend en de titel van deze roman is niet voor niets ‘Broedertwist’. Dit boek gaat dan ook voornamelijk over Evan en zijn oudere broer Carson. De bijzondere band tussen de twee én die tussen Evan en Henry loopt als een rode draad door dit verhaal. De hamvraag wat er destijds toch is gebeurd blijft je bezighouden.

Wat een compliment verdient is dat Ellory niet zomaar een verhaal vertelt. Van beide mannen leer je veel over hun geschiedenis, hun afkomst en daarbij ook een stuk algemene kennis over deze moeilijke en harde tijd in de VS. Hij vertelt van A tot Z een compleet levensverhaal op een indrukwekkende wijze en waar voelbaar veel onderzoek voor is gedaan. De sfeerimpressies zijn filmwaardig. Wat veel indruk heeft gemaakt, het gehele verhaal doet dat trouwens, is dat de overgang van het leven in de gevangenis naar het ‘vrije leven’ zo’n grote impact heeft. Alles valt weg, de routine, de regels, de beperkte ruimte. Eenmaal op vrije voeten is alles overweldigend maar nog steeds ben je ‘die crimineel’. Het is dan ook moeilijk voor Henry om na drie jaar het leven weer op te pakken.

´Broedertwist´ speelt zich af in zeven dagen. Intense dagen waar veel gebeurt en enorme uitspattingen aan emoties plaatsvinden. Dit alles is zo ontzettend mooi neergezet dat dit zomaar eens het beste boek van Ellory tot nu toe zou kunnen zijn. Het is bijzonder, prachtig beschreven en zo gedetailleerd dat je jezelf in het Texas van die tijd waant. Je hoort de ratelslangen, het getokkel op de gitaar door zowel Evan als Henry op de achtergrond. De knipoog naar Whiskey Poet (de band waarin Ellory speelt heet The Whiskey Poets) en zijn eigen liefde voor countrymuziek en de gitaar is mooi in de hoofdpersonages verwerkt. Evan en Henry met hun gemeenschappelijke liefde voor de muziek, het niet uitkomen van wensen en dromen, en een jeugdliefde die je hart sneller doet kloppen maken dit verhaal dusdanig dat je het het liefst in één adem wilt uitlezen want alles wat een goed boek nodig heeft komt voor in dit fenomenale verhaal.

Ellory heeft zich met dit boek wederom bevestigd als een ware verhalenverteller. Fascinerend, integer, prachtig en menselijk gaat hij diep genoeg in op zijn personages en hun levens om te begrijpen waarom ze de beslissingen nemen en reageren zoals ze doen. De kunst is dat Ellory zorgt dat je blijft lezen. Tot op het allerlaatst blijft de motivatie voor alles een grote vraag om vervolgens verpletterend bij je binnen te komen. Het verhaal doet op momenten denken aan klassiekers als ‘Gone with the wind’ en ‘Legends of the fall’. Weergaloos mooi!

‘Broedertwist’ heeft helaas slechts 432 pagina’s, dit soort verhalen mogen eindeloos voortduren.

I adore R J Ellory books; the way they're written and the vivid character and environmental descriptions. This one is no different. I was hooked from page one and I was quickly immersed into the world of Carson and Evan Riggs, Rebecca Wyatt and Henry Quinn.

The story shifts between the 1930's / 1940's (primarily) and the early 1970's where, In the latter, Henry Quinn has just spent three years in Reeves County prison for an unintentional crime. There he had shared a cell with a prisoner, Evan Riggs, who, upon Henry's release, had entrusted a letter to him to give to his daughter, Sarah. Evan has never met his daughter, doesn't know where she lives or even her full name so he asks Henry to initially ask his estranged brother, Carson (who is Sheriff of their home town, Calvary) to guide him as to her whereabouts.

As the story progresses and we hear how Carson and Evan's parents met and how unlikeable, even as a child, Carson was, I began to thoroughly detest this horrendous man and was hoping for something horrible to happen to him!

As I say I did love the book but I felt there was a lot of repetition, especially around events which had occurred in the late 1940's and which Henry was trying to get to the bottom of in order to carry out his promise to deliver Sarah's letter. At times I wanted to hurry the story along so I could find out what had happened and where it was going.

this is a very tragic story, ultimately caused by jealousy and love. It's not my favourite of RJE's and nothing on the scale of A Quiet Belief in Angels ( amazing book) but is recommended to read if not for the beautiful writing alone.

From the first page of Mockingbird Songs I was hooked. I found myself on a journey to uncover the truth hidden in a small American town. 'Mockingbird Songs it's going on my list of brilliant books. I love the easy flow of the book best, and the plotline was intriguing. It did make it hard for me to put the book down at night to get some sleep. In the morning, I would reach for it as I wanted to know what happened next, which made it difficult for me get on with things that needed to be done.


I loved the main characters Henry and Evie, I hope they are going to have more adventures together.

Another well crafted tale by R J Ellory - this based on a brotherly conflict spanning decades and of course over a girl. One brother becomes a small town sheriff ; the other ends up doing life in prison for a violent murder. The story is cleverly told through a third party, a tenacious young man who served a few years as a cellmate of the incarcerated brother. This is a very good read, my only query was that after such a great build-up, this intriguing tale didn't really have the in-depth and climatic ending that I was hoping for.

A slow burning thriller with an undertone of menace throughout. A story of small town USA and broken families. Henry is released from prision and is asked to deliver a letter to his cell mate's daughter. Through alternating chapters we follow Henry's story of keeping his promise to deliver the letter and the story of Evan (his ex cell mate) and his brother Carson and what the contents of that letter may reveal. Loved this format of storytelling as the stories, secrets and carnage are exposed.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. The writing is good, the story line interesting and entertaining, the setting brilliant, but the characters are a bit flat really - I couldn't seem to care what happened to any of them.

I would like to read more of R.J. Ellory's work though.
