In this the third Dave Davecki mystery, our hero buys a boat, not just any boat...a houseboat, and finds the body of Little Willie Horton floating face up in Lake Superior. One salient fact is, there's thousands of dollars of cold, hard...well, wet actually...cash floating around the body. Strange? Indeed. For, Lake Superior herself is summoning Davecki to solve the murder AND uncover a diabolic plot by evil, water-stealing bad guys who are draining Lake Superior to supply the needs of the thirsty in the desert Southwest. It all ends in a tidal wave of action as Davecki chases evil Nevada Henderson on sea, land and air. And, with the "help" of Lake Superior, Davecki gets his man...sort of. Plus, believe it or not, Dave Davecki actually kisses a woman. And, hard to believe, she kisses back. Pretty awesome for the detective the Duluth Budgeteer called a "loveless hermit." Great fun all the way through!
I think that the hallmark of a series is when you read one book of the series and you HAVE to read the rest. Lake Effect is the third in Mike Savage's Lake Superior Murder Mystery series with Detective Alphonse "Dave" Davecki. I will go back and read the first two. Savage's writing is a good balance of description and dialog. His action scenes come alive in your mind's eye, and you forget you are reading a book--it is more like watching a mental motion picture. Davecki is a well rounded character. Savage reveals him slowly, so you are continuously learning about him. I expect his girl friend Clara will become stronger in future books. It will be interesting to see their relation develope. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good detective story.
Caveat: I received this gratis from Salvage Press. If I didn'tlike the book I would say so. I liked it and look forward to reading more of Mike Salvage.
