Gut Well Soon: A Practical Guide to a Healthier Body and a Happier Mind

Rate this book
'A jargon-free guide, written by a mother-of-three, to all things gut health, drawing on cutting-edge research from Oxford University PhD researchers and the practical advice of health professionals.' The Mail on Sunday. Gut Well Soon navigates the turbulent waters of health and wellness in the 21st century. It explores the science underpinning the health claims and misconceptions we have all heard but never fully understood. In particular it explains why our gut bacteria is crucial to our mental and physical health, and explains what you can do to support it in a simple and accessible way. Not satisfied with just words, Catherine has created an informative and individualised online programme called Reset Your Gut to help put the fully-referenced information in this book into your everyday life.

About the author

Catherine Rogers is an integrative mental health therapist, whose innovative practice focuses on how physical health can improve mental health. Trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Clinical Hypnosis, Catherine works with experienced nutritionists, and with a diploma in nutrition herself, provides a multi-disciplinary insight into health issues.

Her 20 years of experience as an integrative therapist and her work with Oxford University PhD researchers looking at gut bacteria in relation to the immune system, schizophrenia and other areas, has led her to passionately believe in the importance of good gut health for both mental and physical wellbeing.

The result of this passion is 'Gut Well Soon', her new book which explores the science behind all the latest 'health' claims and explains why gut bacteria is so crucial to our mental and physical health.

Not satisfied with just words in a book, Catherine has created an online recipe programme Reset Your Gut www.resetyourguthealth.com which will help individuals get fitter, have more energy and ultimately live longer in a fun and easy way. It is a practical course showing you "how" to get your gut back on track.

Doctors love this programme as they do not have the education or time in their 10 minutes slots to advise on nutrition. She is hoping to make it a medical device so doctors can use without having to access! Individuals are also starting to use it successfully.

It provides bespoke plans for individual health conditions and shopping list so no more flicking through a recipe book! For example, if you are a non-celery eating vegetarian with depression at the end of the four weeks you will know which foods to eat to help your condition.

Some good information but it’s not about the gut. The author goes on and on about things that aren’t related to your gut health maybe 15% of the book talked about gut health.

While I believe most of what is in this book, there are some things that were slipped in that leave me wondering. Most questionable is a casual reference towards the end about certain foods helping to detox your system.

Lifestyle factors that influence the gut microbiome (food, poor sleep, stress, inflammation, gut permeability, antibiotics, pollution); How your body and mind benefit from exercise; Inflammation (look at your diet, reduce stress, learn to relax, sleep well, get moving, control your weight); Drugs (antibiotics, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, illegal drugs)
Reducing your exposure to external toxins (reading the label, pesticides, mercury-fish, fluoride-water, radiation, cleaning products, cosmetics, deodorants, sun cream); Tests (gut bacteria profile, thyroid function); Your choice (information is power, avoid gluten, vaccines)

Listened to this book from the British Council Digital Library.
The way to good health is through the gut, according to the author. She stresses on the great significance of our gut bacteria and details how gut health impacts not only our physical health but also our mental health. She lays bare how we can keep our gut health intact and suggests various strategies.
Found that she digresses off and on. Besides, looks like the purpose of this book was to market her online programme called Reset Your Gut. Frequent references to the programme and soliciting participation in it was definitely a put off.
