When you dance with death, you have to be willing to roll the bones...Raven BoneTalker, also known as the Daughter of Bones, is one of the Ante-Fae-the dangerous, unpredictable predecessors to the Fae Races. But Raven is young, and she likes interacting with mortals, so she's opened a business-the Witching Hour-where she takes on clients with ghostly problems. Mostly she reads cards, boots out the odd poltergeist, or helps grieving families contact their loved ones for closure. But when Lana, one of her friends, comes begging for help, things take a dark turn. Raven investigates what seems like a simple haunting on the surface. But the more she delves into the case, the more she realizes that this is no simple ghost. As Raven untangles a web of secrets and deceits kept for over fifty years, she finds herself in danger, facing not only a ghostly threat, but also a danger that is very much alive. I wanted to love this book soooooo bad, and it wasn’t a bad book by any means. It was just so laboriously detailed for no reason. It’s ok to gloss over some things.
Like “It was a rainy day at Mt Rainier. I wore warmer closed to stay off the chill. Before I heard a scream…”.
Instead we get “it was February 3rd of 1980. That Tuesday morning was gray and cold, with glistening raindrops on each blade of grass. I wore a black sweater, but I’ve had it for a few years so it was more gray, and it was a bit itchy as it clung to my skin because of the cold moisture in the air. I wore blue jeans that were my favorite. Even with the many holes in it I just can’t give them up” and it goes ON AND ON before getting to the point.
The point was the FC meeting her pet faretts (don’t know how that’s spelled because autocorrect won’t give me the correct spelling). I truly completely forgot why we were in this flashback because it took 20 minutes of nonsense before getting to that reason. It’s a damn flashback. There is no need for all these tiny details. In fact mundane everyday things like what you’re wearing, min by min detailed what you do from the moment you wake up to this point, DO NOT NEED AO MUCH DETAIL. As of right now, she is still talking about stupid things, she hasn’t got to the meeting yet!
This book would’ve probably been 3 hours if you cut out all the BS, and would’ve still been so much better than this. Now. Instead you get taken out of the story because all you can think of is the author trying to meet her max word count for that chapter.
I have liked what we saw of Raven BoneTalker in the Wild Hunt series, so I was happy to see she's getting some books of her own. What strikes me as I read this book is that while Raven has lots of friends, friends that call her to help, friends that help her, she is deeply lonely. Part of that is loosing her mate a while back, but it might also be she knew Ulstair wasn't her true mate, which she acknowledged in this book. Raj seems to help with the loneliness, but he's just a gargoyle. Ember and Angel came over to party with Raven and the girls had fun, even did stupid junior high things, but it wasn't enough. Raven helping Lana, who was in a crazy situation was good, filled a need in her. Yet at each turn Raven needs someone in her life, the person that she can come home to after all the things she gets up to, to comfort her.
Love this alternate view into this world. Raven is wonderfully complex and very relatable at the same time. She has an intriguing group of friends and, of course, we see plenty of familiar folks from other Wild Hunt books. And, best of all, we get to know Raj the gargoyle better. Oh yes, the mystery was well-done and engaging, and pretty creepy at the climax.
I laughed my ass off at the Jim Morrison incident! Okay now that's out of the way.... I love Raven. She's quirky, has her own code she lives by and is more human than she thinks. Raj is a perfect mix of mischief and love. Doing what's right is not always doing what is perceived as correct. Looking forward to the next installment of the over all series and Raven's next book.
This was a fun ( and darkly disturbing) urban fantasy book. Great addition to the wild hunt series even if it's a spin off. Raj is the most awesome Gargoyle ever.
I can't give this book enough stars. I loved loved loved this one. I'm so excited to follow ravens journey in these. Might just have a new favorite character!
TLDR: Bland, dry, flat, 2 stars because I wanted to like it and in the hands of another writer the premise might have been salvageable.
I wanted to like this. I was really craving a new interesting heroine, with cool witchy/magical abilities. This was not it. The dialogue is wooden and stilted, the reader is subjected to one info dump after another and they're written in the way an Amazon product description typically is - bland and dry.
There is no character development - they are flat and 2D - if everyone had died in a dumpster fire, I wouldn't have cared in the least.
The plot itself was disappointing as well, I kept hoping that the author was getting to the main plot - to the purpose of the MC's story, but it just never came. The MC runs into 3 magical "challenges" and with basically a wave of her fingers and a little help from her acquaintances (you can't really even call them friends...) handles everything. The problems are all comparatively minor, and are so easily resolved that they act as tangents to where the main plot should be - but there isn't one. There's no build up of tension, no climax and therefore the resolution(s) feel hollow.
OMG, I loved this book from the moment that I picked it up. As soon as I started reading I was transported to the Seattle where all forms of paranormal can be found living with the humans. IT moved along at a great pace, has characters that you will fall in love and want to know more about and need to know on a personal level and a story that will grab you and keep you and you will not be able to put the book down.
Yasmine never fails to keep me wanting more. Though this addition to the Wild Hunt series is darker than the others i enjoyed every last word. Getting to know more about Raven, her motivations and of course her relationship with Raj makes me impatient for the next book.
Though I miss the other world series, I'm happy to say this is satisfying my need.
Raven Bonetalker is an Ante-Fae, one of the beings that are the ancestors to the Fae, though being in her nineties, Raven is not quite old enough to be one of the ancestors herself. As a necromancer, or none-talker, she works with the dead and with spirits. In this book, we meet Raven properly, get to see what her daily life is like, and work through several different cases with her- one of which features a ghostly danger to one of Raven’s friends.
This is technically book seven of the Wild Hunt series, but the events in it take place before those in books five and six (Ember still hasn’t gone through the Cruharach yet). It also takes place outside of the regular Wild Hunt storyline, though we do see cameos of each of the main characters from the books. Nothing happens within the book that makes it a necessity for it to be read in series order, and it does work well as a standalone story. Several incidences in it are actually referenced in books five and six (but nothing important), so if you have yet to read the rest of the series I’d read this one just before book five.
All that being said, it is a good story; Raven is an interesting character though her world is a little darker than Ember’s and a lot greyer. She has some interesting friends and contacts, and the case at the heart of this book is an engrossing one. There’s plenty of action, and even some magical incidences, but the bottom line is that this is really a story about who Raven is, and what she does.
An enthralling urban fantasy, this is a standalone within the Wild Hunt world and an enjoyable read for urban fantasy fans.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
4.25*
Going through adding some old ratings from a re found note, just author / title / rating given.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
This book is a little different from the ongoing series...the lead character in this one is Raven instead of Ember. This is a good story; Raven is an interesting character though her world is a little darker than Ember’s and a lot greyer. She has some interesting friends and contacts, and the case at the heart of this book is an engrossing one. Again after reading this book I am looking forward to the next in the series. Yasmine Galenorn is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors and I will be sure to check out other series that she has written when I finish this one.
This book is from Raven Bonetalker's POV, a change from the previous books in this series from Ember's POV. Lana, a friend, is having serious trouble with Tag, her boyfriend. It develops into something truly evil in an exciting episode later in the book that almost gets Raven killed but for the help of a witch and an Amazon. There is the sad-but-interesting backstory of Raven's ferrets, Elise, Templeton, and Gordon. A gold-digger widow comes to the wrong medium. She’s bound her husband’s spirit to her so she can claim his wealth. Raven causes her great disappointment as she releases the husband to move on. Under the influence of Stygian absinth, Raven summons the spirit of Jim Morrison while partying with Ember and Angel, resulting in great dismay, disappointment, and an ectoplasmic mess. Raven has to exorcise an Underling threatening her friends. It’s a scary, dangerous process. There are cross-over cameos by characters from other books in the Wild Hunt series who will be familiar if you’ve been reading the series.
I am so thrilled to have discovered Yasmine Galenorn's books many years ago! I fell in love with the Otherworld Series..then the Wild Hunt..and now the Ante-fae Series..there all such wonderful and exciting reads..but I gotta say this particular book had me on pins and needles!! It was filled with so much suspense, once I started reading I couldn't stop! Raven Bonetalker is one bad-ass, sexy, compassionate woman that I just love! This book will not disappoint! I love being able to just buy these books on Kindle..gone are the days of having to wait and drive to the bookstore before I get to read the next in the series!! Happy reading and thank you Yasmine Galenorn for the world's you bring to life!!
I read this book in the order that Goodreads gave for this series. However, I do believe that this book should be read prior to The Silver Mist (The Wild Hunt #6). I say this because of incidents that happen in this book that are referenced in book 6 of the series. They aren't a huge deal but when you read about them in book 6, you wonder what happened. And in this book you find out what happened and you have a bit of a giggle about it.
I do recommend reading them out of the Goodreads reading order, so read Witching Hour prior to The Silver Mist!
Other than that, yet another great story and the beginning of a new series too! I adore Raven and can't wait to see where Yasmine Galenorn goes with her tales!
One foot in the grave makes it easier to help the dead on their way.
I love the worlds this author creates and the way she weaves the characters and their tales together. You can always count on the ability to step out of this world, into hers, for a jaunt onto the other side. It allows one’s inner witch to take a walk in daylight safely, which isn’t always allowed in today’s world. Having a group that is working together to become their own community, that helps one another set things right again, while protecting one another. It also helps to throw some light on the things that those with a little bit of a grey side do, for others that they might never understand or see otherwise. Thank you.
I love Yasmine Galenorn's writing. I have read all of her books from all of her series. I have enjoyed the Wild Hunt series, with this being the first of an Ante-Fae Adventure within that series. It was an interesting story, but I thought some of the scenes were unnecessary, and maybe even a bit gratuitous. Definitely not my favorite of all her books, but still a good book and worth the read.
I loved learning more about Raven. She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. This journey with her is scary and exciting to see how she handles herself. In the other books she’s a mystery I’m so glad to finally get to know her a little better. Highly recommended! Especially if you’re a big fan of Raven BoneTalker.
We get to travel in a spin off to the main ARC. The author let's us explore a character that is a close friend of our heroine. Her abilities are much different because she's one of the elder races. The story is still fast paced, full of danger & we stay fully engaged until the end.
This was a book about Raven BoneTalker. A friend came to her and told her that her boyfriend’s house was haunted and the ghost was targeting her. But it turns out that the spirit was being controlled by her boyfriend (who was not a nice guy). So Raven and a few friends got together to help her out and to get rid of the boyfriend.
I was deeply engrossed in this story from the very start! I loved being able to follow Raven in her daily life and get a glimpse of Raj in his home life where he even speaks to Raven!! This just made him so charming and special! I definitely recommend this book to fellow readers! Don’t let this one get away!
Fabulous start to Raven Bone Walkers story. Serial killer, gargoyle, and a guest appearance of Herbs and Ginty. This book ticked all my boxes. Another winner in my opinion.
The action was a little off, a lot of small problems that are resolved in the book, and the big action that builds to it it's resolved in one page and so easy... I don't know about another book in this series...
More of Raven and Raj. More of the wonderful and slightly scary world they live in. More of the fantastical beings that inhabit that world. More of everything. And now I'm off to read more in the next book! 😁
This was a pretty good story focusing on Raven Bonetalker. I do prefer the stories that feature the Wild Hunt and the characters who are part of that agency, but this was a fun little side story.
This was great! The first in the series I’ve read and a great start to 2023! Plan on going back to the beginning and checking out this series, among others written by the author.
Wow this story of mist, darkness and light, of life and death, the afterlife. The characters are so real and the feelings coming from this storyline freezes you at times. You got a fan. Catha Watkins Reese
Another great read from Miss Galenorn, absolutely love this series and really enjoy the Raven side books, this book has everything that makes a great read, magic, mystery, murder and best of all Raj the gargoyle.
