When it comes to books and movies, Brynn Paulin has one rule: there must be a happy ending. After that one requirement, anything else goes. And it just might in any of her books.
Brynn lives in Michigan, where she likes to spoil her children and dogs—not necessarily in that order. She also loves to cook, travel and spend far too much time on social media. She enjoys mentoring and meeting new people and is always willing to chat. Personally, she finds great pleasure in spending time with her family and dogs, as well as volunteering around her community.
First published in June 2007 by Ellora's Cave, Brynn is the author of over 130 books, including the bestselling Daly Way and Taboo Wishes series.
According to Brynn, her writing success can be attributed to an eclectic collection of music, her local road construction crews, a trusty notebook, and of course, the people in her life who’ve finally accepted that everything is research—or will be.
3 1/2 stars. This is a really fast story about a soldier coming home from war. Amelia started writing to him when her sister decided she had better things to do than write to a soldier away at war. Now that Keon is coming home Amelia knows she has to tell him that she isn't her sister and that her sister hasn't been writing or talking to him for a long time. This is a fast fun steamy book. It's very quick, and its fun but I do think an epilogue would have made this book even better especially with how short it is. I wanted to see them years from now still together and an epilogue would have sealed the hea for me.
What can an 18-page book really accomplish, apparently a nice little story. Although it doesn’t include complex characters, or a particularly engaging plot, it still surprised me because it was so condensed. The gist of the story is simple; Amelia Barker has been pretending to be her fickle sister to a military pen pal, Keon Munro, after she completely ditches him. Feeling bad and adventurous, she decides to keep up the charade his entire deployment, until she realizes he want’s to meet her (since they kinda began a relationship) and remembers she’s not her sister.
In Amelia we get a character that’s insecure about her body and doesn’t believe a man like, Keon would be interested in her, especially since her sister is like movie star beautiful (I really don’t know what that means, since most movie stars look like everyday people without the makeup and alterations, but I get what she’s implying). She struggles with her options and after realizing she’s never done anything adventurous or spontaneous, she takes a chance on Keon.
They meet and she’s nervous about his reaction to her mediocre appearance compared to her sister’s beauty. He doesn’t care and already knew that her sister ceased communication long ago, but he’s in love with, Amelia. They go to a hotel room and…..
End of story
This really isn’t a BDSM novel, although Keon is very dominant, you’re not gonna see any 50 Shades of Grey type action. But it’s a quick, sweet story that’s a good transition novella.
Very short but sweet story about the homecoming of a soldier.
Amelia began to correspond with Keon, after her sister lost interest, but she never told him about the change Now she meets him for the first time, nervous about the attraction and the deception.
The attraction is definitely mutual. Khaki combusts in this little book and you get a sweet HEA.
Wow!! 5 flaming stars 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I have only read a few books written by Brynn Paulin but I will definitely be binging more very soon. Special Force is an internet connection turned instaeverything!! It doesn't get much hotter than this one. Super short safe read! Do yourself a favor and read this one NOW!!!
“’…I want the truth. Always.. Do you have anything to tell me?...’ ‘N-no,’ she, stammered. She couldn’t tell him now. Not like this. Not before he’d given her the fantasy of her heart.”
Amelia Barker starts out playing a female Cyrano for her sister Grace after her sister begins an online tryst with Lt. Keon Munro. When the faceless e-mails to Keon heat up to calls and web cam chats, Amelia steps in for a sister who’s becomes engaged to another. Amelia is already smitten by her soldier with the intense green eyes, when her sister tells her to end the relationship; but this is something Amelia can’t do. She tells herself she doesn’t want to disappoint a soldier at war, but it’s more than that. That sentimentality has been replaced with lust and passion for her military man and she’ll continue to play the role of her sister until she meets the Keon in the flesh. He’s filled her dreams for the last year and now nothing will stop her from meeting him face to face . Amelia doesn’t know what the future holds, but when Keon asks her to meet him on his first deployment back to the states in 18 months, she goes. She’ll just be Grace for a little while longer. The truth, she decides, will have to wait until she’s had her fill of Keon. But Amelia isn’t the only one hiding a secret and Keon’s disclosure will have a painful aftermath that Amelia will never forget.
I loved SPECIAL FORCES! This is a short novella with heart, passion, and intense sex with BDSM elements. The characters of Amelia and Keon were well developed in these brief pages, especially Keon. He sizzles on the page. I didn’t want this tale to end. Short, sweet and sexy to boot, SPECIAL FORCES is a winner!
For a short story (approximately 20 pages) it was very satisfying. Don't get me wrong I would love to have spent more time reading about Amelia and Keon, maybe we can talk Brynn into revisiting this couple :) I love the name Keon too, it gives me all kinds of visions of warm tropical places and a strong dominate man...but I am get away with myself :) This story is very timely, that many people touched by the military can relate to. Because of a case of mistaken identity Amelia is feeling guilty and also her insecurities about coming face to face with a man she has never met in person gives this story a real feeling. Keon is on deployment when he and Amelia start their cyber romance and when he come home, he also has to try to curb his intensity. Keon is sexually dominate and Amelia is a natural submissive and their love scenes are HOT.
This thing is short. Very. It's just like I read a short summary of a book. I mean it's 23 pages. What can you possibly write in 23 pages? Yep, it was just like that. Rushed conversations, rushed sex scene. Maybe I could appreciate it if the one sex scene would be well-developed, but it isn't. Oh yes, and I still didn't mention the misprints or typos. How hard can it be to check 23 pages?
Story: 4/5 stars. Heat level: 3/5 stars. POV: third person. Heroine: Amelia has been impersonating her sister, Grace, with her online boyfriend. She’s afraid he’ll end their relationship when he discovers that she lied to him. Hero: Lieutenant Keon Munro is returning from deployment to meet with the woman he’s been talking with for months. Secondary characters: None.
Pen pals \ internet pals with a 1 sided secret. He's a soldier coming home. The day they meet, and she has to come clean with the truth, will he walk away or fulfill her fantasies? After reading this I so wanted more of the story, more of the future and differently more hot , demanding sex.
I would have liked to see this as a full length novel. This was more like an essay. Even shorter than a novella. The story is sweet and commanding. Smexy scenes were hot. Character building was lacking.
Not to much substance the book if you could even call it that. Takes maybe twenty minutes to read then another twenty-five minutes to make up a epilogue! Has HEA but that about it hi, kiss, whoopie, you're mine, the end.
It’s a GREAT idea for a book, but we missed out on all the emotional build-up. Thus this final “reveal” scene fell flat. It’s a ghost of an idea not executed particularly well. I’d so want to read the full-length version of this story—assuming the author put in the detail work.
This is a quickie read, but oh so enjoyable. I’m a sucker for a man in uniform, so I loved the military angle, and the homecoming scenario that’s created. Though I’ve never been in that position, the way it’s portrayed feels authentic. The dynamic between the characters feels a little awkward at first, but once they get past big secret, the chemistry is sizzling.
The reference to “special force” might give you the idea that this story has some BDSM in it, and Keon absolutely exudes that commanding persona, but there is no actual bondage or anything so it’s not as taboo as it might sound. Though I will say there’s a little spanking involved.
Besides the sexy aspect, I enjoyed the emotional bond they have, especially when it really shone through as they consider and discuss their potential future (even if it was a short conversation :P).

First I have to say, this short has an amazing cover. Good heavens, gorgeous. This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author, and she really impressed me. For such a short book (it’s part of the Erotic Gem series), she managed to get a lot of feeling into it. Amelia has been carrying on an Internet correspondence (both email, telephone and video chatting) with a soldier on deployment, Keon. She is meeting him for the first time as he is returning home from Afghanistan, right in the airport. The problem is, it was actually her sister, Grace, who began emailing him and had talked to him for a year. She then foisted the “break up” onto Amelia. Grace is an actress, willowy and poised. Amelia is boring and normal, a school teacher. She doesn’t want to give up meeting Keon, as she feels she KNOWS him through their talks.
Keon is very forceful indeed, and he wants Amelia. It’s a sexy meeting, with a chance for her to tell the truth or pay the consquences. Short and sexy, and I wish they would have a longer story because they are so good together.
Let's start with the cover - YUMMY - does not even begin to describe how hott, dirrty, and purrfect - it makes the story. Second, I love this author - she has such great works of writing and this one just follows.
I only wish it were longer. Or maybe do some kind of sequel with the story line - it was that good. This is one reason I only gave it three stars and the whole plot point of which sister she was. It did not make the story bad but I do not feel it made it good either. I understood the reasoning for it but I feel it could of been just left out.
Even for it being a short story, I connected with Amelia and I loved Keon. They had such chemistry that they had built over the long distance chats. Their communication was really well and the sex, it was good. I just want more, maybe a short story of when he has to be deployed again and the farewell she gives him, could be just as hot!
This book was picked up to kill some extra time. It was the perfect story of a soldier coming home from deployment meeting the girl he had been having an online relationship which that could be any women’s fantasy involving a soldier coming back from being deployed. This book had a soft spot for me it reminded me of how my husband and I got together but we didn't have such a sexy explosive encounter when we first met that Amelia and Keon had. I felt that Brynn Paulin has an amazing ability of dragging you into the story and making you hope even if there is a little communication problem everything will work out. The only drawback to this book was how short it was. I wish it would have gone a little longer then their first night together otherwise it was a great story.
I have to say I love a lot of Brynn Paulin's stories (especially the Daly Way series! :) and this story was another great one. I loved both Keon and Amelia. Keon is prime alpha male and know what he wants...and he wants Amelia. Amelia is sweet and soft but in a good way, she didn't come across as weak (which I hate in a leading lady). I've read this story a few times already and I'm sure I will do so again in the future. It's short but oh so good! The story even inspired me to send care packages to some of our soldiers that are overseas right now and would love any show of support. Great story and also a good message...our troops need our love both at home and abroad. ;)
I had read some reviews about this novella on Amazon and they spoke about this amazing emotional depth this book contained. I missed it. I will admit I have no experience of the returning soldier scenario portrayed but believe that emotion should translate regardless.
I also didn't like that our hero had somewhat set up our heroine regarding the identity issue as a means to "punish" her. It took advantage of her insecurities.
