The writing is so pretentious. It tries very hard to be lyrical but it ended up being cheesy as fuck.
It's not just the writing. The characters are pretentious too. For the first 10% (I dnf'd after that) of the book there's not one moment someone isn't swirling their glass of wine. But mostly it's Layla that pissed me off. She comes across as conceited and overly antagonistic. She's extremely rude to the guy who's being perfectly courteous. I'm not saying don't be wary and cautious of the mysterious stranger, I'm saying you don't have to be a bitch when you don't know yet if he's dangerous.
And the gay 'bestie'? Really? Can we stop that already? Dear authors, gay men are not an accessory to give your female protagonists. It's far from the first time I've read a book with the 'The Gay Bff': only there to prop up the FMC, give life lessons and love advice, basically just her one-man cheerleading squad. And how cliché do you have to make him. The guy can't go two sentences without adressing Layla as 'girl','honey' or 'sugar'. Ah, yes, and he must comment on how hot the love interest is and how he would fuck him.
Speaking of that, do we need to be reminded every page how good looking the man is? His eyes are breathtaking, I GET IT. Not to mention his scent..... is Layla a dog? Because she sure is doing a lot of sniffing. Yes, he smells of cinnamon and jasmine (etc) and it reminds you of the desert. I got it the first 5 times, the additional 15 times were not necessary (that's still just the first 10% of the book btw).
I also find Layla's phyical reactions to the man way over the top. I don't usually mind insta-lust -though I prefer to build up to it- but here it's so extreme that it looses the intensity it's supossed to convey. Sometimes less is more. And here it should have been toned down.
And yes I'm rating it 1 star even though it's an early dnf, but that's how much I disliked it.
This is just not my cup of tea at all. Basically, the FMC seems to have some kind of magic hoo-ha that brings all the boys to the yard - like, as in, that seems to be her superpower - and I'm not even marginally interested.
That plus the weird drama ... mystery guy buys you a magic bracelet (that seems to unlock your hoo-ha magic) and mentions a brief sum up of your life story while dropping an unlimited credit card on your table, along with a mysterious business card that has only a phone number, as he dashes dramatically out the door while offering you a job. He loosely implies that it is prostitution (as in, she skeptically asked if it was prostitution, and he hesitated ... and she said "you hesitated!" and he acknowledged that it is complicated).
And she is mesmerized by the whole thing enough that she's going to go with it, despite her common sense occasionally bubbling up and reminding her that she's going to be a human trafficking victim.
And in the meantime, men are inexplicably drawn to her, and her body fires with heat, and she has sex with a crappy ex.
There are spoilers in this review. I was really willing to overlook a lot of red flags in the guys because the world around the hotel the author built (that didn't start being built until ~50%) was actually super interesting, but then the main guy is actually really terrible and super manipulative and the book ends with him comforting (which isn't actually what she wants, but her body just responds to him) and as a token "strong heroine" saying she makes sure to let him know she hates him... I don't think there's a trope I hate more than a "strong" heroine that can't help how she reacts to her love interest and just gives in to it. It's really just an excuse to let the love interest get away with all the shitty things they do to the heroine and keep the heroine going back for more. I actually hated the ending so much that it gives me goosebumps and I regret finishing this book more than anything else. I wish I could scrub this book out of my memory.
Started out intriguing. The premise and world the author is trying to create is different and interesting.
BUT!
Way to many details about nothing. Paragraphs upon paragraphs spent describing mundane things. The story meanders away from the mc's often. Overuse of same words or phrases within a scene. Layla's thinking and actions towards Adrian become annoying. She is supposed to be in her late 20's but behaves more like a teenager.
Those who know me know I don't intentionally read YA. This is definitely YA. Any sexual situations are more 'alluded' to or barely touched on. Nothing graphic. While it can NOT be considered 'Clean' it comes close.
There are very few typos, etc. But they do exist.
It would be a great YA story if not for all the elements that caused it to become boring. Some 'Blue' pencil taking out these things would immensely help the flow of the story.
It is rare for me to give a paranormal romance 5 stars because usually they are a little simple in what they are trying to achieve, essentially an HEA (Happy Ever After) with trials and tribulations, magic and romance along the way. This PNR (paranormal romance) has amazing world building in a similar vein to an urban fantasy, where it is usually plot driven rather than romance driven.
The MFC (Main Female Character) is Layla Price, a recent PhD graduate in International Relations. She recently lost her dream job at the UN in Paris and her life seems to be going nowhere. She still lives in a shared house with an ex-boyfriend because she can’t afford anywhere else and she works in a bar. Her parents died 2 years ago and her grandmother a year before that. She feels alone and isolated. It is into this life that a mysterious billionaire steps introducing Layla to a different world of wealth and power.
Layla is scared of her brief meeting with this man and tries to forget him until there feels like there is no further space in her head and heart for anything else. She decides to take his job offer as a concierge at the Red Letter Hotel, somewhere so exclusive there is no information available anywhere about it. Even through her fears, Layla has to take that leap, and she lands in another reality.
Ava Ward has created a wondrous world in the Twilight Realm, where creatures from other dimensions meet with the rich and powerful of earth at the Red Letter Hotel. There is beauty, sensuality and joy at the hotel and the way the author has painted it makes me wish it was a real place I could visit.
Ava Ward also has excellent descriptive powers. Her prose enables the reader to envisage the wonders that she imagines for us so clearly it’s like a movie playing in your mind. We feel Layla’s fear as she discovers her own powers and her joy at living in a marvellous place filled with wonders beyond her imaginings.
This really is a fantastic start to a new series and I can’t wait to read the next book, in the hopes of Layla getting closer to her HEA.
Stopping at 40% mark. If I hadn't needed to sleep, I might have finished it - but after sleeping, not really feeling the need to pick it up again.
Typical BILLIONAIRE romance, with secret Illuminati level-background stuff. Super rich man.
Woman has real temper problem, also flips back-and-forth on her emotions going "this is perfect" and "run away now". Very little logic in her decision making - whatever needs to have the character act in a certain way for the next part of the story. She operates on feelings.
Note that the "harem" aspect will kick in later in books of the story - this is her getting her first man, or several. No loyalty here. And her anger at her ex having a harem makes the fact this series is about her getting a harem just that much more confusing.
At the 40% mark, she has had about one chapter with her billionaire.
If you want to read the entire series, the long lead in might work - but it doesn't for me. I don't like her, and I really don't like him. Done. (but no grievous structural or editing problems, so doesn't warrant a one-star review)
Almost every man in this book was overbearing and took so many liberties with the heroine - the few who didn't, the author made it a point to describe how attracted they were to her. The gay best friend was weird too
There was also a point in the beginning of the book where it said the heroine turned down 10 job offers waiting for the one she wanted with the UN... which she didn't end up getting and was working as a bartender because of it...with her PhD... I was honestly so baffled at that point because wtf??? Anyway I was soured by that. I went in thinking the heroine was going to be mature and intelligent but I was disappointed unfortunately
This book is chock full of them. The end justifies the means is HUGE in this book.... from secrets and lies to outright sexual assault... it's all ok because of either a lesson learned or it's too late to fight against. Adrian should've been shot and Dusk should've been castrated, but no, the so called "independent, strong willed" fmc just goes merrily along with it. It's insulting and demeaning.
Recurring hot flashes? Overwhelming desire to rip off all one's clothing? No, it's not menopause…
…and she is truly a Chiari drachans-siar – not just a Royal Dragon like you, but a Royal Dragon Bind – a rarity in our world. Before the Bind Lineage resurfaced in Mimi Zakir, we thought C. drachans-siar extinct.
What's a Royal Dragon Bind? Hell if I know, even though I read the WHOLE. DAMN. BOOK. There's a lot of mysterious bullshit going on up to the end, and a lot more stuff that's never well explained.
Featuring a bone hamsa-hand with a fiery red coral teardrop in the palm, the antique silver cuff seemed to forbid any who might touch it – as if it was not to be owned, lest it claim the one who owned it.
I'll give the author credit for giving it the old college try to evoke a Morrocan feeling throughout, what with the scents of cinnamon and orange peel, hot winds, and sensuality in a magical/Tantric sort of way (employing every one of these things, almost constantly). Actual sexual penetration doesn't occur, except near the beginning, with the h's human ex. But energetic sexual teasing is a near-constant page filler. Oh, and I can't forget to mention the abundance of Rumi quotes. Which are lovely, but… (insert eyeroll here, for all of that). Speaking of eyes, there are eleven mentions of fluttering eyelashes (to be precise, in one they only trembled). Gah! In summary, I found myself slightly irritated. Many times; many different things. And sometimes bored.
Suddenly, she had insight into Adrian and the Hotel’s secrecy issues – she couldn’t imagine what it would do to most world religions if they found out their old gods were actually real people who simply lived in a different time-space continuum.
The book has some decent world-building and an interesting premise. The series may get better now that all the mysterious bullshit is out of the way, but I'll probably never know.
I didn´t like the first part of the book so much, in my opinion it had to many "fillings", like the reoccuring desert wind with the fragrants, the description of the clothing style of Adrian... The idea of the Red letter hotel with the different guests and employees is really unique, I enjoyed the second part of the book and I will definetly want to read more of Ms. Wards books.
Well, I probably would have like this book or series if the author wasn't so long winded, gosh! I just don't have the energy to continue with series unfortunately.. I would say it had potential but the author's style of writing just turn me the hell off. Not trying to throw shade, it just wasn't for me....Soooo with that I'm out!
I received this book as an advance reader. While I am an avid fantasy reader, I had not dipped into the paranormal romance genre before and wasn't sure what to expect. Well Ms Ward has nailed it. Get ready for the heat! All the descriptors in the info are spot on...hot, steamy, action packed with a smart heroine and sexy bad-boys moving between the human world and the Twilight realm. I found it a little slow to start as she built the foundations for the story background, and was keen to move it along faster and for the two main characters to finally connect. However, Ms Ward is constructing a complex new fantasy environment and on reflection the book needed the scene setting provided. It is worth continuing as the pace (and heat) picks up significantly and it becomes a real page turner. I actually went back and started reading it again to see if I got this wrong and found that with the knowledge gained further on in the book from my first reading, the front end all made sense and it didn't seem to drag at all. Ms Ward has developed the characters well and delivers surprises as they unfold. The story is full of interesting species and snippets of history, promising exciting things to come - a great blend of fantasy, romance and intrigue. It's a great start to an intriguing new series! This book certainly whets the appetite for exciting things to come. I'm really looking forward to continuing this series, as Ms Ward develops the intrigue both relationship-wise and politically in the Twilight realm. Only negative...a small point..annoying overuse of some descriptors for the steamy scenes, but Ms Ward assures me she has addressed this in the final release version.
The beautiful imagination and effortless flow of ink that belongs to Ms. Ward, has intimately come together and produced a unique twist of fantasy and paranormal romance. Royal Dragon Bind is a true example of balance between romance and fantasy. Ms. Ward's possessive command of the delicate twinning together of the genres is a wonder to experience. Royal Dragon Bind pulls you in from the very beginning. The lead female character Layla is strong, sassy and full of fire. A true fighter that still holds a level of innocence that you can't help but fall in love and root fiercely for. Layla is thrown head first into a startling rewrite of family history and a strange new world she never knew existed. In this world she must navigate a bind she wasn't given the chance to choose. Along with that, she must learn the delicate political climate between the dragon clans and the connections between multiple new creatures and sub-species and realms and her new found family. All while learning how to master her new powers and who to trust. She is rare and the only one of her kind known to be in existence. Royal Dragon Bind is an awesome start to the series Royal Dragon Shifters of Morocco. You can't put it down once you start. For you fantasy lovers the building of the realms and the main setting of The Red Letter Hotel and the beings that visit are magical! For you romantics the twist and turns of the multilayered connections and relationships are swoon worthy! Take the plunge into this series it's well worth the time consumption and addiction it will produce. ~Queen Nuba~
Unputdownable! I absolutely loved everything about this book and am so happy it is only the first in a series and there are many more to come. Ms. Ward’s unlimited imagination and incredible world-building compare to Tolkien and R.R. Martin. I imagine reading one of her stories invokes a similar feeling of wonder as it must have for people watching The Wizard Of Oz and experiencing technicolor for the first time. I appreciate a strong female lead that isn’t whiny or too stupid to live and Layla Price fit the bill even though she was definitely entitled to whine and complain given the hand life had dealt her. I don’t want to give too much away as this is a book that must be experienced, but it has everything you could want in a great fantasy: secrets and lies, conspiracies, secret societies, alternate dimensions, danger, intrigue, dragons, shapeshifters, magic...need I go on? Though this book is the first in a series it does not end in a cliffhanger, per se, but enough questions are left unanswered for book 2 to follow. I, for one, cannot wait! At this point I’m rooting for Dusk (Adrian knows what he did wrong) and I’m excited to see how Layla proceeds in the next installment with regard to her newfound power and the shocking truths she discovered at the end of book one.
Opening salvo into new fantasy series with Dragons! An Art Exhibition, an exquisite bracelet, and a handsome stranger with Aqua eyes are the focus of attention for Layla Price, a young woman recently awarded a PhD in International Relations, as this story begins. Layla and the Aqua-eyed-stranger are shocked, yes literally shocked, when the man places the bracelet on Layla’s wrist, which brands Layla with the bracelet’s imprint as a result. Thus Layla is baptized into a strange world, where people are more than they seem on the surface, and we are tossed into the story, which continues to produce one revelation after another. By the end of the book, we have a set up for an alternative, parallel universes universe that leaves us hungry for more—more information about: the clans we have just been introduced to; the true role Layla will play as she takes a job at a swanky Parisian hotel; and what relationship will develop between the handsome man that initiates her adventure with the purchase of the bracelet. An excellent storyline, fascinating characters, great and original world building, that will appeal to many lovers of fantasy and of all things Dragon. (A bit too much sex for my taste, thus lowering my rating from an otherwise 5 star performance.) 4.5 ⭐️
A STRONG woman can find her heart at the Red Letter Hotel. Are you ready? “ROYAL DRAGON BIND” is a tremendous sci-fi, reverse-harem Dragon story full of emotions suspense and the STEAM romance readers love. This story, however, pleasantly surprised me with some very original twists. Add to that Ward’s descriptive and emotive prose and some richly loveable characters, and it will surprise no one that “ROYAL DRAGON BIND” has earned 5 STARS. Layla is such a strong character and easy to understand. However, as I read her story, I so admired her willingness to trust her decisions. I voluntarily read a copy of “ROYAL DRAGON BIND” and this is my voluntary, HONEST review! So, short and sweet – “ROYAL DRAGON BIND” should be your next paranormal romance. Get your copy today! Happy pages! 😉
I walked into this book with no expectations, and had a really hard time putting it down. It starts off with some powerful characters, some mystery, and smoothly takes you into an entirely new world. I read this book and first off thought, "Thank you Layla, you are a powerful woman who is using her brain, and not tolerating crap from people." And I love that she thinks about how these strange magical happenings could be a scam. The magic is real though. Very, very, real. I loved this book.
This was honestly a good read, it took me a little bit to fully get into the book but once I got past say the first 5 chapters it really hooks you in and won’t let go until you finish reading and then you’re left wanting book 2. It has a great plot/story that isn’t hard to follow, very in-depth characters and as the story unwinds you find that Ms Ward has put more into the story than even we realize. Great read
Besides excessive use of the word annihilated, and maybe arrested, in the first chapter, Ms Ward did an amazing job with this first book in her new series. She is brilliant at using descriptive phrases so that you can easily imagine everything in the story and it sucks you in and won't let you go until you've finished the book. The chemistry between the characters was great and the steamy scenes were steamy. Overall, a great book and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
I dunno, you guys. It's good! It's just... odd. Sometimes it flows so naturally, but then it skips around before flowing again. The detail, the editing, the actual idea behind the story, those are all AMAZING. But there's just something not right that makes it feel off sometimes. ALSO, IF I HAVE TO SEE THE WORD EYEBALL ONE MORE TIME I WILL SCREAM. Honestly, use a different phrase. Please. I beg you.
A new author and reading genre/ trope for me . And I must say I was completely entranced . Even with wonky Wi-Fi ( tornados) and interruptions ( a new puppy) I found this book to be a very good read . I'm impressed, Ava and look forward to the next book in this series. Thank you for the opportunity to read and delve into your world !

This is a great story with great characters that you will love. I didn't want to put it down. I really enjoyed this book. This is a fantastic, must read!
I received a ARC copy of this book and I am volunteering to do an honest review.
Absolutely AMAZING! I don't think I have ever got so worked up about a book before. My emotions were so into the characters and the situations as I read them, that I felt like I was actually in the book!
Really enjoyed the characters and the story line. This author immersed you into this world and you didn't want to come back out. Looking forward to reading more from Ava Ward!
Totally awesome. Completely enthralled with this book, read in one day completely mesmerising characters and world of dragons and their characters. Highly recommend
