In this volume, we see the conclusion of the battle between Uvo and Kurapika, which of course ends with . How could it not with the way that battle was going? ;D

I was also pretty impressed with the progress that Gon and Kil were making with their money schemes, now that they're looking for the presence of aura amongst items in flea markets in order to get things that they hope will be worth a lot of money. They've even found an honest appraiser (...I think) to help them sell their items for a large markup!

Of course, they're also after Spiders for reward money, and so far that doesn't appear to be going to plan... hopefully their luck will improve in the next volume? 8'D

Notes on chapters below for reference:

"It was good to see your old self. It's my role to be the reckless one and it's your role to be the calm one and stop me"

It was painful on how that statement would make perfect sense later in the series....

Gon and Killua captured by the Phantom Troupe was always so unnerving. It was impressive on how they managed to follow Machi and Nobunaga without giving away their location. If it were not for Phinks and Pakunoda, it would be a good trailing mission. The two Spiders even admitted themselves on how good Gon and Killua's zetsu were in concealing their presence. The awkward reunion of the two kids with Hisoka was also funny.

Another arm wrestling happened in the Phantom Troupe's base but this time, Gon was clearly overwhelmed by Nobunaga's strength. But that burst of frustration from him that allowed him to defeat Nobunaga even once was so satisfying. He was kind of impressed that he even offered the kids to join the troupe.

On the other hand, the cheeky and confident Killua looked scared after realizing his and Gon's strength were nothing compared to the Spiders, he was on his old constrained self. He was already thinking of a way to escape, and even offered to be a bait just to let Gon run away. Because he was trained to be cautious and not to face anyone who he thought would be above him in strength, it was a nature for him to react that way. But that was his major weakness. If you think about it, being cautious was actually a good call, but the way Killua acted was not normal and that was thanks to his family. I always hated seeing him in that state.

The curating talk at the beginning with Zepile was actually not my cup of tea but it amused me on how the side breaching, one of the curating terminology, was able to help Gon and Killua find their escape from Nobunaga.

The Phantom Troupe was now on the move to track down the chain-user aka Kurapika. It was getting more exciting.

ostomy scene pog also even though i remember loving the ostomy scene so much i wasn't even close to knowing how much i love it that scene is amazing. illumi's voice in his head honestly seems so much better in the manga vs the anime because it's clear that they've become his own thoughts that he's arguing with (instead of looking like he's just simply arguing with illumi himself). it's the first scene where you see him struggle against his own mind and illumi's words and so that's pretty special 👍👍

you can absolutely tell this is a transitional volume between more exciting plot points, but oh my god that last chapter with killua and gon is so queer coded lmaoooo

like killua nearly getting himself killed to save gon and gon freaking out at him for being stupid and killua just screaming “you don’t even know how i feel!” can only be met with me screaming “you are in love with your best friend and don’t have the words to express it because you are a 12 year old boy!!!!”

i have two more volumes at my disposable, stay tuned for updates in the near future 🫡

Solid entry, mostly building towards future volumes, but you get some fun story stuff. Togashi stops the plot for like a full chapter to explain different scams you can do with one hyper specific type of historical artifact at an auction and it rules, Gon and Killua end up way over their heads in an exciting way, lots to like here.

Things seem to be speeding up and yet dragging... does that make sense?
Anyway, chapter-wise breakdown and detailed review:

Chapter 84: September 2nd: Part 6
Okay. So, basically, Kurapika can use EVERY nen type. He can heal himself as well. Why is Gon the main character? He's definitely not the strongest, nor the brightest and this particular arc has not a lot to do with him apart from trying and failing constantly to get that videogame, Greed Island.
Moving on... Kurapika kills Uvogin.
Gon pawns his Hunter's license for money.

Chapter 85: September 3rd: Part 1
Gon and gang try making money by selling nen objects at a higher price.
Milluki, Killua's brother, shows up for the auction. It jogged my memory of how he too had been intrigued by Greed Island.

Chapter 86: September 3rd: Part 2
A character named Zepile is introduced. He is a collector of antiques and possibly also a nen user. He helps Gon and Killua by saving them from being conned out of some treasure they accidentally came in possession of.

Chapter 87: September 3rd: Part 3
Zepile seems to be a good guy and possibly a friend to Gon and gang in the near future.

Chapter 88: September 3rd: Part 4
Zepile teaches Gon and Killua about various Doctoring and Appraising methods using by Antique dealers and collectors.
Leorio gets a tip about Machi and Nobunaga, two Troupe members' whereabouts and he contacts Gon and Killua about it who rush to the specified location.

Chapter 89: September 3rd: Part 5
Gon and gang observe the two Troupe members from a distance and Killua realizes that the both of them seem just as strong as Hisoka and thus, the three have no chance of capturing either of them and the bounty is a farfetched hope.
Elsewhere, Light Nostrade arrives and commends Kurapika and the other bodyguards for keeping his daughter, Neon, safe.
Silva and Zeno Zoldyck (Killua's dad and granddad) arrive with a few other assassins hired by the Ten Dons for handling the Phantom Troupe. Now, things seem to be getting better and just a bit more fun.

Chapter 90: September 3rd: Part 6
Gon and Killua follow Machi and Nobunaga from a distance and yet the Phantom Troupe members sense the pursuit. Seemingly out of nowhere, Phinks and Pakunoda arrive undetected and they capture the boys. Phinks holding Killua upside down was the funniest part of this volume for me. Haha. Poor helpless enraged K being held by the ankles.
Maybe the boys could have evaded one member each but then Machi joins Pakunoda and Nobunaga joins Phinks and the boys are in trouble for sure.
On a side note, I really like Pakunoda's style and self-assured aura. She is such a chic villain. *cue cartoon heart eyes*

Chapter 91: September 3rd: Part 7
Gon and Killua are questioned by the Spiders for a bit before being taken to the Phantom Troupe hideout where they see the other members and among them... dun dun du-dun...is HISOKA! Haha. Gon's reaction was priceless.
Nobunaga openly grieves Uvogin and it's kind of sad. Even villains hurt when they lose their friends after all. However, Nobunaga beating Gon in the name of arm wrestling made me mad. Gon is less than half his age, just a kid really. Even a villain should just pick on people more their age and size. Aghdkjnsldn. I was so giddy when Gon finally got angry enough to defeat Nobunaga.
Also, the fact that Kurapika never once met Gon and gang while being in the same city makes sense now. The boys didn't know that Kurapika was the chain user and when questioned by the Phantom Troupe about this, they didn't need to lie. They REALLY did not know who the chain user was.

Chapter 92: September 3rd: Part 8
Feitan and Nobunaga argue about who gets to torture Gon. It gets heated and the other Troupe members intervene, reminding them that infighting isn't allowed as per Boss Crollo's orders.
Pakunoda, the chic Spider villain, seems to have the power to read people's minds by touch and she verifies that the boys do not know the Chain-user and can leave. Nobunaga however, disagrees. I don't know where the change of heart came from really but he decided he wants Gon to join the Troupe. I guess Gon's anger reminded him of his friend Uvogin and the fact that both Gon and Uvogin were Enhancer category nen-users.
Anyhow, Gon obviously has no interest in joining them and yet the boys are kept as prisoners by Nobunaga until the Boss returns.

Chapter 93: September 3rd: Part 9
Nobunaga is in a room with Gon and Killua and he is blocking the only exit. He's already warned the boys that if they tried to escape or got too close to the door, he will kill them. After some time, the boys remember the Doctoring methods Zepile had taught them and one of them was called Ostomy. It gave the boys the idea that if one can't use one opening or exit for whatever reason, they should just make a new one and with that thought, the boys kick the side walls of the room and dash in opposite directions, surprising Nobunaga. He will now be able to chase only one of them, and even then, the boys have a head start.
I was glad this is where the volume ended, on a hopeful note of escape rather than captivity.

From now on, star ratings will be in relation to HxH itself, as each one would be 5-stars by default otherwise. Who's ready for some high-action auctioning?

- We resume with Kurapika vs. Uvo, which is really just red-eye chain-link retribution. Kurapika shows off some impressive tricks, you wonder how he got that strong, then he peaces out for pretty much the rest of the volume. We'll pick back up on him later.

- Meanwhile, in order to raise money to buy a copy of Greed Island, Leorio guides Gon and Killua in the world of auctioning. This is more captivating than it should be. Let this be a storytelling lesson: Mundane events can be interesting. Togashi goes deep into silent auctions while coming up with a strategy that fits perfectly within the world of the story. In this case, to get the best value items to resell, Gon and Killua look for items with traces of Nen.

- The boys then meet up with a cool character I forgot about: Zepile - a master appraiser. He takes us further down the auction spiral by teaching Gon and Killua about hustling tactics, scam artists and quality craftsmanship. They hire him to maximize profits. It sounds boring, but it's captivating stuff.

- The action heats up considerably once Leorio gets a tip on some of the Spiders' whereabouts. Since they are worth a hefty bounty, Gon and Killua jump at the chance to nab them. Killua wisely notices they are outmatched, but it doesn't matter. They get a taste of the Spiders and are kidnapped. Throughout the series, notice the captivating balance between Kil's "Never challenge a stronger opponent" mentality to Gon's "I'm up for any challenge" spirit.

- Sidenote: Killua's father and grandfather were hired to take down the Phantom Troupe. Oh boy. And his fat brother is lurking around here, too.

- This volume saved the best moments for last. Phantom Troupe is worried about Uvo and are dead-set on finding "the chain guy." Then upon seeing the emotions flow from Nobunaga regarding Uvo, Gon explodes with rage - why does he mourn for a friend but is heartless when it comes to innocents? Perhaps my favorite moment in the series so far. Let's see if the boys can escape.

Ah, okay, so the Yorkshin Arc is getting more entertaining. Not sure why I was lukewarm on it in the past.

The part where Zepile is teaching Gon and Killua about auctions while random cheapskates try to lower the prices was quite fun. Reminded me a bit of Ace Attorney or Danganronpa (though this came out first...), as if I could easily imagine stylized speech bubbles popping out with "OBJECTION!" or "COUNTER!" This scene is what made me start taking an interest in the Gon/Killua/Leorio subplot. Of course, almost immediately afterward, the boys get caught up with the Spiders, and things go back to more "standard" action fare....

I find it kind of funny that Gon is trapped by Matiy and Phalcnothdk (Jesus Christ, Togashi, why can't you spell...?), in like an /ss/ way, though saying so makes Nobunaga and Phynkss taking Killua from both sides look kind of....

I've said before that I find Wbererguin kind of boring, so it's a bit annoying that Nobunaga expresses grief at his death. The idea, of course, is to "humanize" the Spiders in a way that paradoxically dehumanizes them in their apparent lack of empathy for their victims. This works well to further establish Gon's character, and continue setting up his peak in the Chimera Ant Arc, but... I kind of just don't give a shit about any of the Phantom Troupe as people, except, like, finding Matiy and Chzzok hot.

The Mafia have hired Sillva and Zeno to assassinate the Spiders, which won't happen yet, but which will probably be cool when it does. I don't remember, and I know most of the Spiders are still alive today, so I can't recall if the Zaoldyecks (okay, it's not as fun to keep using these wonky spellings...) actually kill anyone.

Gon has used his Hunter's license to get information on the Phantom Troupe 👻. They post an ad to get information in exchange of money. They try to get more money by trying to get items using the aura to identify the worth. The items having aura is worth buying as it might lead to higher selling price.
They were almost duped but got saved by Zepile who in turn becomes their agent for selling the items. There is wooden vault which is of high value but it can be fake. In older times, the rich used to use the vaults to keep their jewelleries and money safe. It was enclosed using a glue. On melting the glue and removing the contents inside is one of the forgery techniques. Forgers also create a new hole 🕳 and get the inside items. They have a vault which has a high worth. Zepile is entrusted to get the highest bid on it as some people try to bring down the price by spreading wrong stories and bringing suspicion on the authenticity of the items.
They find 2 Troupe members based on the tip but they were baited to find about Kurapika whom they want to kill as they suspect he killed their comrade. Gon plays arm wrestling with Nobhunga and finally wins when emotional. Since they don't have information, they were to be left but get trapped to be recruited. Gon and Killua find a way to escape them. Need to read further on whether they are successful. It is an interesting manga.

What sets this series apart is the fact that everyone has so much depth. Just when you think Uvo was your basic muscle villain, it turns out, he had heart and was a lot like Gon. I love that. I love that Togashi-Sensei makes you care for every character. THAT FIGHT THO...ugh it's so good and brutal and amazing. I remember watching it and knowing that this show was going down as one of my favorites. The stuff with the auction was so-so, but it picked up steam again when Gon and Killua trailed Machi and Nobunaga and got to come into the Spiders hideout. The Killua/Gon banter, the fact that Gon doesn't figure things out as fast as Killua, but when he does, it's something important, the way Nobunaga reacts to Uvo's death, and everything with Hisoka jump this volume up to favorites status. On to the next.

Initially, I was a tiny bit bored with the appraisal jargon with Zepile, but I understood that it will be an important factor eventually- just not how exactly but it was worthwhile information. Did not disappoint and that tidbit turning into a clever trick to fool Nobunaga.

The heated arm wrestle between Gon and Nobunaga further continues to humanize Phantom Troupe in their familial closeness to one another while also showcasing how ruthless and cold blooded they are to those outside of their posse.

I’m also happy that Pakunoda’s design is greatly improved compared to her debut. Love a unique face.

Also!!! I don’t know why, but the names Nobunaga and Pakunoda are so frustratingly hard for me to pronounce and remember! 😭😭😭 It stresses me out…

I didn't realize until I saw the comments on this volume that Togashi is the creator of jYu-yu Hakushu, and that really surprised me. Because I really like this manga, and the other is one of the only ones that I dropped after just a volume.

Sorry, not entirely relevant there, but it surprised me. The characterization in this book is strong, consistent, and avoids clichés even while drawing on some familiar, archetypal aspects in ways that both echo and twist the reader's expectations. I also find that while I find myself unable to ever predict what's coming in the story, it always works coherently with the constant shock of little surprises.

this contains my fav arc ever ! the phantom troupe is my favorite group of villains
I'm so glad that i started with the anime back in the day because now when i'm rereading the series all over again i started to notice how minimal it was lol
which is both a good thing because it leaves stuff for imagination and a bad thing because i miss the oppressive themes of the 90s anime like i feel the world was better fleshed out in the anime which is almost always the opposite way in other series where you would have the detailed manga and the cut corner anime
still it aged like fine wine and well worth the read and reread

This was a good volume that ended the battle between Kurapika and Uvo well that showed that, even though he was his enemy, Kurapika still recognized his humanity by burring him.

I also liked the touching upon auction and how scammers are able to get away with getting things at a cheeper price than it was worth.

Then everything just became better when Gon and Killua got captured by the Phantom Troupe. Which showed how the members act. I also found how they refer to Kurapika as the chain dude funny and showed how laid back they can be. I found that the fact that they care for each other and how Chrollo is both smart and competent brilliant.

The first half of the book with Zepile was okayyy but a little bit slower of a pace. While necessary for the story, I much preferred the excitement of the boys following two of the spiders only to be caught in their web. The arm wrestling matches between Gon and Nobunaga was so intimidating. Watching Gon lose repeatedly and having his hands just completely wrecked was awful but the moment he gets riled up about them not having any empathy for their victims and slamming his opponents hand was incredible. And the way he and Killua secretly communicate using the language they learned from Zepile made the first half of the book worth it.

I love the Yorknew arc, so I cannot stop reading or rating Hunter x Hunter with 5 stars.

What a character development we have here for Kurapika, who shows his real strength and determination to capture the spiders.

Gon and Killua, now trying to raise money to bid on a copy of the game Greed Island, start chasing two of the spiders in an action-packed scene that lasts till the end of the volume finishing in big style.

I will be reading the next volume soon as I feel the urge to know how this arc will resolve.

This volume was pretty fun. Kurapika and Uvogin's battle was pretty good, and the phantom troupe beginning to want to find Kurapika has added some tension. Killua and Gon trying to raise money, meeting Zepile, and getting caught by the phantom troupe were pretty good but I have been preferring what has been happening with Kurapika in these last few mangas. I do think the highlight of this volume was seeing Silva and Zeno Zoldyck have been hired to kill the phantom troupe I think this has built up a lot of hype and can’t wait to see what happens.

Proving itself one of the best, again. I enjoyed the boring bits. The beginning and end are packed with suspension. We learn more and more about our leading characters, good, evil and the rest in between. I'm just as interested in the action as I am with the more mundane things that take place. For instance, they spend a great deal talking about swindling and underhanded methods used at the auction. I'm just like Gon in the way that I'm interested just because it sounds fun.

Things have not dragged one bit. I'm already picking up the next volume. Gotta read, bye!
