You’ll love this gritty dark fantasy that unfolds across tropical islands and undersea realms laced with hidden savagery.
Along with his wife and daughter, Matt lives as a digital nomad, traveling the world while researching for his novels. He reads approximately a bazillion books a year, loves video games, and relaxes by binge watching Netflix with his wife.
Matt writes retellings of mythology as dark, gritty fantasy. His passions of myths, philosophy, and history inform his series. He strives to combine gut-wrenching action with thought-provoking ideas and culturally resonant stories.
As a child, Matt read The Lord of the Rings with his parents. This sparked a lifelong obsession with fantasy and started him on a path of discovering the roots of fantasy through mythology. In exploration of these ideas, the Eschaton Cycle was born—a universe of dark fantasy where all myths and legends play out.
And when you - Pele - are a Goddess of Fire, and your sister - Namaka - is a Goddess of Water it becomes even more problematic.
Unfortunately, the animosity and hatred that has been building between them has destroyed people... villages... and whole islands. But, it's not until tragedy strikes their younger sister Hi'iaka that they are willing to try to set aside their differences and their own personalities to find a way to save her. It quickly becomes apparent though, that their issues with each other will only escalate so they agree to pursue their own paths to Hi'iaka's salvation.
But there are hazards and stumbling blocks to be found along their paths. The war for control of the Mer kingdoms...and for most of the Worldsea that surrounds them... has reached new levels of betrayal and destruction threatening not only those beneath the ocean, but those above as well. And the ghost of one long dead may destroy it all.
To complete their journeys down their own separate paths, each must face terrors from their past and present while confronting the one man who they both fear and hate... and who has more dark power than they could ever realize.
This, the second in Matt Larkin's foray into the Age of the World Sea, has fantastic depth and breadth of characters and the world they live in. Matt is arguably the leader in retelling of the mythic legend. His knowledge and skill in writing and creating these new stories by taking several parallel cultural mythologies and while pinching here... hammering there... and blending it all together is masterful and amazing.
A word of warning!!! Matt is true to the actual names and spellings of the ancient pacific island based myths. If you're not familiar with those cultural standards, it may take you a little bit of these books to get the feel for them. But...as you become more caught up in his story telling they will soon become old friends (plus...he does include a glossary of names and references at the beginning before the story finds its start.
The Eschaton Cycle is Matt Larkin's swiftly expanding universe that ties different cultures and their myths into a world of Gods, events, and conflicts that will roam across time and the ages.
An outstanding story that grips you and has you lost in the plot. Pele is running out of time to save her sister. The waters of life can help, but it could be too late. This is the second book and absolutely worth the time to read.
