Freaks. Rogues. Oddballs. Prey. Runts. We're all welcome in Pack Aberrant.
We aren't going to be winning any popularity contests, but our hodgepodge bunch is more loyal than even the strongest pred packs. I should know. I grew up in one of them. As soon as they realized I was different, I was despised, even by my own family. So I left, joined Pack Aberrant, and I've steered clear of alpha pred assholes ever since.
Until my heatwave hits, and I accidentally jump three coyote shifters in a parking lot. Whoopsie.
Once they realize what my animal is, they're gonna kick me to the curb just like every other pred shifter has. And my old pack? They come back to haunt me.
I'm unwanted by the three hotties, threatened by my old pack, and to top it all off, I have to find a new job because I attacked a bank robber. Accidentally.
Being a misfit really sucks sometimes.
Author's Note: Every book in this series will be a stand-alone for that character, but will be a continuation of the Pack Aberrant story. Each book has a unique mate dynamic. Some main characters will have multiple mates, while some will have monogamous relationships. Addie will include multiple mates. Please be advised that this series is for readers 18 years and older, and includes explicit language and spicy scenes. Enjoy!
Raven Kennedy is a tea and dark chocolate kind of girl and can often be found binge-watching The Office or The Great British Baking Show.
She enjoys writing all kinds of books, because each one brings a different experience. Whatever the genre, she hopes she creates characters you can root for.
When she’s not reading or writing, she’s with her family, probably messing up a recipe or going on a hike that she thinks she can do, but in reality she can't because she remembers that all she does is sit at a computer all day and write her heart out.
You can connect with her on Facebook in Raven Kennedy's Reader Group, as well as @ravenkennedybooks on Instagram.
I liked Addie's character and the idea of a pack that's only for misfits. It reminded me a bit of some of Eve Langlais' stuff. But the bad guys were like villains from the Flintstones and they just ruined the story for me. They were just ridiculous. ...and that's saying something, in a book about a sexy duck shifter who kicks ass!
Anyways, here's the plot; 1. 2. 3. . 4. she tells them where to stick it and it takes them a week to reply 5. 6.
Very simple, predictable and boring. And to think I was worried that reading about a duck shifter would ruin the story. That ended up being one of the interesting bits! Romance wise it was too shallow and insta love to be satisfying. It's too bad really because the bones were there for a fun read. There was just no meat on thw bones.
Well it turns out I am discriminatory against certain shifters. Addie is a duck shifter who's mated to coyote shifters which is a no no. Prey and Predators, that's a movie title in it self. I felt the pacing was too fast and her personality threw me off.
I’m not really a big shifter romance reader, but I enjoy Raven Kennedy’s co-writes, so I decided to check out more of her catalogue and I’m so glad that I did. I really enjoyed Addie’s story. I like how her pack is filled with uncommon shifters, and how they are all a little unique in their own way. Also how can you not enjoy a RH with heroes who can’t resist their heroine!?!? All in all a great read, and I’m excited for more!
Pack Abberant aka the Pack of Misfits is the home of those rejected by the packs they were born into, thought of as weak, odd and less they found a home in Pack Abberant and found an alpha who recognises the value of each pack member.
Addie due to the type of shifter she is, was treated like crap by the pack and family she was born into, running away at 15 she found a unexpected home/family with the Pack of Misfits, a Pack she is damn proud of. When she comes across 3 coyote shifters during the onset of her heat, trouble manifests, as they all intentionally end up creating the bonds of a permanent mating.
I don’t know how I feel about this one, I did finish this in one sitting, but Herrix one of Addie’s mates was such an idiot/ass for so much of the book and I felt like he was forgiven too quickly – it just didn’t work for me.
Out of the 3 mates, Lafe had the most personality, but some of the Duck puns were so bad, after a while started skimming when they popped up.
This is a reverse harem romance, but I don’t know the heat and romance didn’t really do it for me – for example when one of the guys called her
The pacing was a tad off with this one, but I would give book 2 in the series a go.
I've read the Cupid series and loved the writing and witty humour in it, so thought I would pick this up for an easy read. It is a fast burn, and insta-lust. But again I loved the witty humour in it, and surprisingly all the duck puns didn't put me off as they didn't feel over the top. Whilst it is a lighter, more romcom read, there were still moments of hitting you in the feels which I liked. Will continue the series in between other reads, as I really enjoyed reading this.
Surprisingly, I liked it a lot. I loved the puns - they were the best part!
Addie is one of those RH books I definitely needed to read. I don't know what's more hilarious - a duck and three coyotes or the amount of puns that were thrown my ducking way. It also doesn't hurt that Addie was just adorable from the start. She is definitely one of those girls who is highly underestimated. It's definitely due to her being a duck shifter but it also has to deal with the fact that some men view women as weak - and she is anything but that.
This book definitely gives you a bunch of misfit shifters. Plus it gives you a take on how many shifter's there really are. One would never think a gerbil shifter would be head of security in the misfit pack but that guy is scary af either way. Getting to meet all these unique and hilarious characters definitely made this book fly by.
Overall, I think - no, I know that I need the next book ASAP.
A lot of the reviews for this book have a spoiler. The very first GR review has the spoiler and 5 of the reviews in the first page have it. I get that they were being clever but If you're going to read the book, maybe just stick with the official synopsis and avoid reading the reviews.
Addie was pretty good. Cute, fluffy paranormal romance with a MMMF relationship. That said, I have a small issue. Everything in the book should drive the story forward. Should add to the story in some way. The first sex scene did that. It belonged. The others just felt like a victory lap and really weren't necessary.
But for the most part it was really just good fun.
And a warning.
Obviously there is sex in this book. There is also some very strong language. No problem for me but it might be a problem for some.
This is a very charming paranormal. I read some reviews before diving in – so I went in knowing that Addie, the heroine, is a duck shifter. And that seemed like it might be too goofy. But, this ended up being great. The tone isn’t overly cutesy or too ridiculous, and it hits the spot if you want a paranormal read that isn’t dark, but also feels original, with an interesting world that leaves you wanting more.
The basic plot is a rejected mate RH standalone: when Addie (who's in her early 20s) accidentally gets mated to 3 coyote shifters, they’re not enthused to learn that she’s a duck shifter, since their world has a strict hierarchy between which shifters are considered important, and which ones are looked down on. People in this world look down on “prey” shifters and respect “pred” (predator) shifters.
The conflict with Addie and her guys has just the right amount of angst to make this book feel like it isn’t TOO light and fluffy, but it’s also not dark. Addie is full of sass, but not in a way that feels like this book is trying too hard, the way some authors write “sassy” heroines. And, she doesn’t give in too soon after the guys pull their heads out of their asses and try to get her back. She’s easy to like.
The three guys all feel distinctive from each other. Their relationship development with Addie isn’t anything deep – I wouldn’t say the romance is the best part of this story – but, it works for what this story is. There’s a lot going on in it, aside from their relationship. There’s an impressive amount of plot and worldbuilding packed into one book. But, it doesn’t feel like too much is crammed in.
Aside from Addie and her guys, there’s also a plotline involving conflict with Addie’s old pack, who are mostly wolves, bears, and “pred” animals. They treated Addie horribly for the crime of being a “prey” animal. We also learn about Addie’s current pack, which is fascinating and filled with intriguing side characters (I love her alpha, Hugo, and I hope he gets his own book). Their pack is made up of all kinds of “misfit” shifters who got rejected from their old packs or mistreated by the shifter world, for various reasons.
Between the “pred” and “prey” shifter stuff, and the pack of misfits, this is all a great and unique concept for a shifter world. I know that Raven Kennedy has halted progress on other books in this world in order to focus on her Plated Prisoner series, but I hope she eventually returns to this world. And if not, this is a very fun shifter read.
In this case a duck shifter.... With coyote mates??? Prey and predator?? What if they eat her......and not in a good way?? To make matters worst when she accidentally shifts they get pissed and one of them brings a OW.....not sure if her had sex with the OW but all of it's a bit too much.
3.5 stars. What a punny read.. For serious though the puns were over the top! Once again readers are dazzled by Raven Kennedy's ability to make a hilarious story with characters that are just "real" despite the fact that they are all shifters.. yea not that real lol. They just seem like normal people.. in fact I'm pretty sure I know them. Very entertaining start to this series and even though this one wrapped up with a bow and everything the story isn't quite over.. there is more to come.
It was pretty incredible that Raven made the not so popular shifters the star of this series.. that gerbil dude.. super scary. NO ONE wants a pissed off gerbil after them. Anyways our FMC, Addie, is a part of a pack of misfit shifters all either thrown out of previous packs for defects or they are the "prey" of the shifter community hunted and made sport of. Addie herself fits right in to the misfit pack after despite her lion's heart her shifter form doesn't quite fit in with the predator pack she was born in. Just trying to live her life, going about her own business till 3 new shifters roll up into town looking for a new pack. Bound and determined to stay away from the new shifter boys Addie doesn't put up with there macho man BS.. until she goes into heat in the middle of town and need their help.. all of their help.. and ends up accidentally mated to them. Not only is she now having trouble with her mates but her pack is also getting beef from the local predator pack. All the mess here folks.
It was cute and funny totally worth picking up as everything with Raven Kennedy's name on tends to be! Can't wait to see what else shes going to come up with and see if the puns continue into the next book lol.
I am 100 team misfit. A pack for the shifters that don’t belong. Prey breeds, albinism, melanism, handicaps: these shifters have been rejected by their packs and rather than go rogue they found a home and sanctuary with Pack Aberrant.
Addie is pretty hilarious and I also appreciate the POV of her mates; without it I still wouldn’t be as inclined to forgive them for their jackholery even with the grovel.
It is always a surprise but a really satisfying feeling for me as reader when I come across an author whose name I want to remember and whom I want to add to my collection. For me it doesn’t happen often but when it does it’s one of the best feelings. I believe Raven Kennedy just made it into my favorite authors collage. What I loved most is, while the book is good I cannot honestly say it’s one of the best that I have come across, it just totally and absolutely gave me all. It touched all the right spots in exactly the right way. I will be re reading this book and definitely more than once.
So... This is so weird. A guilty pleasure kind of read. I felt embarrassed for the heroine, I cringed many mamy times and yet, in the end, I found myself enjoying it.
Don't get me wrong... I still am opposite the partnership if it's between more than 2 people but Raven's writing made it all hot and actually really good.
Unfortunately I did not love this book, which is a rarity when it comes to this author. Normally I’m ok with insta-love especially when it involves shifters and mating instincts. However even with the MCs being shifters this just felt too fast especially given the idiotic and annoying behaviors of the men. Addie and her three men have brief meetings before her heat kicks in and all at once they’re getting it on like bunnies. (Note the heroine is not a bunny but I loved the surprise of finding out what she was so I won’t spoil it). During their night together the heroine shifts and the men (2 of the 3) just became prejudice assholes because she’s what’s considered a prey animal shifter and they are predators. When her mating instinct kicks in and starts claiming the men it only got worse and one was so in denial that same night he even goes out and brings home another woman-you know, to get the edge off. 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ At this point I was rolling up my sleeves, taking out my earrings and getting ready to rumble. For the book being so short this was unacceptable to me and there just wasn’t enough time to earn forgiveness. It doesn’t help that I can hold a grudge like nobodies business and really wanted Addie to make the men work for it, which again, there wasn’t really time for. Aside from one of her mates and his hilarious puns I just did not love any of the men. Some of the side characters were great like her packs alpha who is an albino Jaguar and her BFF aka the badass rattlesnake shifter. They may be a pack of misfits but they are all smart and formidable. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series to see whose story is next and what the pack is up to 🤓 While Addies story may be complete, the overarching story of her pack will continue on. This may not have been my favorite from Raven Kennedy it was as always utterly hilarious and a good quick read!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is full of puns and I'm here for it! This is a quick little story with plenty of humor, some romance, and a dash of drama to complete the book. I liked Addie, she's strong and stands up for herself and isn't about to let some stuck up coyotes treat her like crap. The guys frustrated me, especially Herrick who thought he was above being mated to Addie. Lafe is the guy with the puns and he made me chuckle, he's also the most down to earth of her mates and I wanted more of him.
I wish this had been longer, things felt a bit rushed in the short story. I would have liked to see the mating bond develop more and Addie getting to know the guys. The fight with the predator pack was also over quickly and I think there could have been more going on there. I'll have to check out the other books in the series so I can learn about the Pack of Misfits.
Just what I needed. I’ve been reading so many duds lately that I just needed something that was hot fluff (or should I say 🦆 fluff lol). Sweet, short and spicy, but also silly. Just my quack, oops, I mean cup of tea.
I read this originally when it was released as part of an anthology. I loved it and I’m super glad it was rereleased and is becoming a series. It’s ducking hilarious and one of the funniest books I read this year (it’s only real competition another book by Kennedy 😂)
I liked the overall concept. I'm mostly unhappy with the relationship between Addie and her three mates. I could tell I wasn't gonna be satisfied with the resolution to their conflict (two of her mates' prejudice) when at 2/3 of the way through the book, they're spewing the same old shit:
At 67%: "[Pack Rockhead] could still be innocent," Herrick points out on our way to the car. "There's no harm in meeting them."
And: "But we're coyotes," Herrick puts in. "We can't be mated to a--"
The fact that Herrick is still doubting Addie and thinking she's less-than this far into the book meant there really wasn't a believable way for them to have a happy ending in my mind. The book kinda plays Herrick's apology for laughs as well.
In fact, the book doesn't really take itself that seriously at all, and I guess that just creates some dissonance in my mind when compared to how Addie's mates have wronged her. Like if it was just some goofy misunderstanding or slip-up that they're making up for, I could get behind it, but their conflict is basically an allegory for prejudice and classism, and then on top of that they suggest breaking the bond which could potentially kill Addie. So I guess the inconsistencies in tone made the joke-y and rushed approach to their reconciliation very unsatisfying to me.
1.5 stars. That definitely wasn't my book. First, I am not a fan of female going in heat, and rutting mindlessly, wether she likes the other Party or not.
Next, the guys were the weakest, most pathetic, condescending little assholes, I had the displeasure of reading about in a long time. Their characters were so ridiculously unlikeable it was not redeemable. It wasn't just a kneejerk, first second reaction, they are simply prejudiced, disgusting pricks behaving like 12 year olds instead of grown ups. I certainly don't enjoy reading about characters like that.
And the reason why I picked up this book: the promising introduction of a pack of misfits? We don't see shit of them.
The duck puns could have even been funny, if there weren't half of the book, it got old so fucking fast.
So. That was definitely a case of, it's not you, it's me. But unfortunately I was seriously disappointed, because MISFITS for fucks sake! Deep sigh.
This was super fun! A little too much sex right out the gate for my tastes, but the world is so interesting and I like all the different types of shifters. I really hope we get more books in this series.
I love shifter books, especially when they are odd shifters and this one was full of that. Then you add the humor, this one was so much fun. I loved Addie, loved that she didn't take crap from anyone and how beloved she was in her pack. Her relationship with her Alpha was great, they teased each other, but you could also tell there was lots of caring and Hugo would do anything for her and not only because she was pack.
The 3 idiots that Addie came in contact with drove me nuts! I wanted them to want her, to be happy with her, but instead they said and did all the wrong things. I was glad that they had to grovel to get back in her good graces and her packs. In the end they did come through, helped save Addie and the pack.
I look forward to reading more about this crazy pack!
Great idea that didn't work for me. It was OTT, too much telling and silliness. I disliked all three Hs, none of whom acted with any honour. Instead they justified their cruel actions. Humour does not negate cruelty. I didn't believe they loved her, it was the mating bond forcing the sexscapades. It was a shame as I wanted to like it.
This book was such a disappointment and the ONLY reason it gets even 2 stars is cause I liked the h and her pack.
Spoilers ahead….
All the H’s sucked. There were 3 of them and I hated Hendrick the most. He cheats on her right after they mate. I get that it was an accidental mating but that doesn’t excuse this. He brings another girl home planning on fucking her and the only reason he stops after making out with her is cause the h intervenes. And his excuse was “I needed to take the edge off” like what the fuck! The fact that none of the other reviews warned me about this makes me so mad. Cheating is a major trigger for me so I really hated this book after that happens.
I love RH but this was such shit. Lafe was the only decent guy but he sucked too because he listened to Hendricks prejudiced bullshit. I would have been fine if this stuff happened before they got mated or didn’t last the whole fucking book but that’s exactly what happened. I would not have forgiven them if I was the h. The girl was attacked and they refused to believe that the pack they wanted to join could ever do that. Like bitch she’s your mate believe her.
I just wanted a nice RH book and this was so awful. Why couldn’t the author just make the guys good mates why make them into assholes and idiots. There was also not nearly enough grovelling and it mostly felt like a list relationship.
I really loved this story. To say I wasn’t expecting Addie to be the type of shifter she is, is an understatement. But it fits. Addie is feisty and truly just like her ducking animal in every way. I love that her animal chose her mates and they were also so very unconventional mates for her. But a very smart choice to make. And apparently it was approved on both sides.
Pack Abberant is dope. They are a hosh posh of different types of shifters with some kind defect that set them apart from their original pack. It could be like Alpha Hugo who is an albino Jaguar. I don’t know why the packs that they came from would treat them any differently though. I mean seriously a lot of them could have been used to there advantage. Like Zoey. She is a rattle snake with no rattle. To me the rattle is for your benefit not hers. So this should have been an advantage. She could be silent and duck you up before you even knew what bit you.
I can’t wait for the next installment for Misfits. I truly could not put the book down until I was finished.
