Broken Silence

Rate this book
After tragedy strikes Charlie’s family, she loses herself in her grief. With her family’s murderers on the loose and cops who refuse to listen, Charlie learns the hard way that she is alone in the world.

Two years pass, and still Charlie will not speak. Out of options and ideas, the judge sends her to a foster home. Faced with a new town and a new life, Charlie must learn to live again. Surprisingly, she meets a group of friends that welcome them into their fold.

Of course, the past always has a way of coming back to haunt you, and Charlie is no exception. With the help of her new family and friends, she tries to find the answers the police couldn’t… or wouldn't, find.

The closer they get to the answers, the more dangerous it becomes for Charlie. Can she survive long enough to be truly happy? Or will the evasive murderers come back to finish the job?

*This is a reverse harem, young adult romance/mystery. The main character will not have to choose who she dates.

This book took me on an emotional roller coaster.

First i want to start of with saying that i absolutely adore Sophia ( Charlie's foster mom). Right from the start i knew that she's one of the good ones.

For me the most enjoyment i got was from the friendship dynamic, i know it says that it has reverse harem themes, and i can see that but most of the book is focused on their budding friendship and Charlie healing from her past trauma.

So with as little spoilers as possible a quick run down on the book:

Charlotte aka Charlie is moving to a new town to join her new foster mom Sophia 2 years after her family's murder (i may or may not have cried during the prologue). Sophia is an amazing person and exactly the person Charlie needs.
She meets Abby while exploring her new town and they kinda hit it off ( yay for none bitchy woman) Abby introduces her to their friend group, which includes Alice, Trent, Cole and Adam. Things takes off from there. With this being a RH, it needs to be noted that not everyone in the friendship group gets romantically involved.

Towards 50% of the book they dive into the slight mystery of her parents murder. Book ends with a HEA for Charlie and her new family.

If you love friendship, family and little romance, you will love this book. There wasnt any actual investigations from the teens ( no scooby doo shit) and Charlie does end up making really smart, useful choices at the end. This is also YA so the furthest they go is light make out

Overall is was a really cute feel good book, and will be looking into more of this authors other work

Read other books by this author in the future: yes
MC: Charlie, Abbi, Cole, Adam
SC: Danielle, Sophia, Alice, Trent, Detective Flynn

Actually I didn't want to read ya books anymore. But then I saw this book that a GR friend had reviewed. She thought it was very good and exceptional for the genre. So I read it. I also have to say that there were some things that were not so common for ya books: For one thing, there was a good backstory that was a common thread throughout the story which had changed Charlie's life. Then while getting to know the group was common as it gets, what was unusual was the final rh. The story was exciting and heartbreaking.

This was a really good book. I was looking for something new in the RH genre and this was suggested to me in a Facebook group. I'm really glad I picked it up. Solid read, liked the main character and the relationships she formed. The trauma was well written and overall, a really good book. I would have liked a bit more romance/heat, but honestly, it wouldn't have fit well unless the book was quite a bit longer. I recommend!

Not Horrible

The plot is some what refreshing, the grammar is ok. It has potential. But for a story that should be filled with emotional rollercoasters for the reader, I had trouble feeling anything. Its almost like the author just went down a list and checked off all the emotional scenes. They don't tear at my heart, don't make me want to to cry, and with something like this I should have been crying more often than not. Then there is the romantic relationships, which feel the same way;empty. I don't feel any emotional connection with any of the characters, so none of the supposed hardships really hit home. Or how the autbor seems to favor Cole, the few times that she is trying to build an emotional connection, even tbough this is supposed to be a Reverse Harem. Then there are the useless info the author gives us, like the fact that Charlie know ASL but she never once brings it up again or uses it. This book lacks finesse, but more importantly it lacks Heart.

More like 3.5 stars

I finished the book, but it seemed washed out. I couldn't connect with the characters at all. It's hard to explain... the book never dives into the characters, it does a lot of telling instead of showing. We were told a story about a girl surviving and healing, but I expected more emotion, more connection between the characters I'm supposed to care about. I love books that make you laugh, cry, growl, and have all those heart pounding moments. I got none of that here. I did finish it, but maybe it's because it was so short idk. I do know I probably won't be checking out the next one. I might at a later date check out her other books, but if it's like this one, I won't even finish the first chapter. I say 3.5 stars cuz the premises of the story is interesting but it's all watered down not at all messy... maybe you can connect when I couldn't?

A good read.

I usually don't read stand-alone books, but I'm a sucker for the underdogs. I'd really like to see more of Charlie's story, seems like there is more to tell.

As a suggestion, it would be nice to have more detail into the "Ways of the foster system." There are so many horror stories out there, and while the Author expressed some issues with various places Charlie lived, the two years in she had seemed only brushed over. It left a lot to be said about the characters experiences.

I still gave it 5 stars because it was a good book. The opinions I have are just suggestion only. ... for a book #2. *hint-hint*

I really doubted between the 3 and 4 stars....

I give this book an 3,5 star. I never give half stars but I really doubted between the 3 and 4 stars.
I really liked the idea for this book, about a girl losing her parents by murder, going mute, getting a new home, amazing friends and a few boyfriends and one girlfriend, and I have read it to the end but then I was really disappointed. This book could be so much more! I think the story is happening to fast and is missing depth. It didn’t suck me in like i first thought and it was as if the writer wanted it to be finished and rushed it.

Bent not broken

Charlie is a strong girl. She cant speak after the traumatic home invasion that took away her family. After doctors and therapists deems that her vocal cords are working she still keeps quiet. Foster parents don't care, police don't believe her and she just stopped talking to protect herself from further pain.
She is given a fresh start at a new foster placement, a lonely but understanding and kind woman. She managed to make friends and pick up her life even with the nightmares following her. I read this book and was pleasantly surprised. This was the first book I've read by thia author and would definitely try another one.

I really liked Charlie. She has a good life, until one night everything falls apart. She is coping through silence and shutting off her emotions. She ends up in a new school and meets some new friends. I thought the friendship between her and the others was great, but considering this is an RH, I felt the romantic relationship really focused primarily on one person. There were a few scenes with others, but most seemed to center on one character. In terms of the mystery aspect, I thought that there was some unrealistic monologueing by the bad guys, but I liked that Charlie was smart, and thought her reactions were great. Overall I enjoyed the story, especially seeing Charlie grow stronger.

All the feels!

Oh, this really got me in the feels! A wonderfully written book, quite different from the other works by Jarica James but just as amazing! FMC Charlie has had things pretty hard in the past few years - actually her whole family brutally murdered and attempts made at her life kinda hard... Can it get better? Or do the difficulties just continue on?

Nice Easy Read

I enjoyed this quick easy read. Charlie was a well developed character that had a strong backbone. Unfortunately I didn’t feel the book was truly RH as it was advertised. It felt more like Cole was Charlie’s boyfriend & she occasionally kissed another friend. If your looking for real RH I suggest skipping this book.

Really good book! Man Charlie is such a “vulnerable” character. She’s been through so much and overcomes everything to become such a strong young woman. My hope is that we can all learn a little from this character. We may feel broken in life but with love(even just love for ourselves) we can become stronger and live!

Beautifully written

Wow... this was a beautifully written and well thought out story. The characters have you crying and smiling and laughing throughout the book, the main female characters back story is heart wrenching but her journey to her new normal with new loves is simply beautiful.

So many feels!

Goodness I loved this. I was crying throughout the story of Charlie overcoming the most traumatic event that changed her life and the search for answers to heal her broken soul. I adored the way the relationships formed with the group and that there was a girl thrown in! Heck yes! I love FF action!

Keep the tissue close at hand

I loved the misfits. They are a mixed group of guys and girls that open thier lives to Charlie. I also love how Charlie didn't have to choose boys or girl but got to choose both and how the misfits didn't all go into a relationship with Charlie but where still friends.

It had potential but fell flat

At the beginning of this story and maybe even for half the book I enjoyed it. The author is a good writer and the characters were nice and plot was dry intriguing. However after awhile the story was a bit hard to believe and the romance was too fast paced but I guess that's what you get with an actual high school RH

Reverse harem standalone

This book draws you in quickly. I couldn't put it down. Charlie is a beautiful soul and she finds love with a group of people. This is the first reverse harem I have read that not everyone is eventually on board for the unusual type of relationship. It still ends with a HEA.

So the book was going ok. I wasn't sure I wanted to keep reading. Then 59% in, the bad guy gives a whole soliloquy of his bad intentions, and if I read it correctly, after he fires a gun multiple times, while she's running away. Come on. Why would he blab and he certainly would have gotten out of there. So, dnf 59%.

Good story

It's a good story but not what I call a RH . Sure she has multiple love interests but only one real relationship. So I would have called this one a romantic suspense novel. I'm hoping that the author did not intend for the RH label.

Good story

I liked how the author dealt with trauma in the story. It's done well and pieces the story together. The rh relationships take place secondary to the true story of healing. I like the multiple povs as well and appears to be a standalone.

Loved it

A broken girl who can’t talk and it’s RH? Count me in. I loved it. I usually can’t find good books where the MC is mute. I’m not usually in f/f just not usually my thing but I absolutely loved this one. Glad I quit putting it off and finally reading it.

Interesting story

This story was really good, there was alot of background info and the poor girl has been through so much. Her group are pretty awesome and I really enjoyed it. I would have liked more character development as well.

Good story, could’ve been done a bit better.
I don’t think this should’ve been a RH.
I love RH stories but the way this was written? Charlie should’ve just ended up with Cole.
I didn’t really get a good feel for any of the characters.
Not a bad story, just needs some tweaking.

Heart wrenching story

Loved this tale of a very brave young lady and her new family and friends who help her rebuild her life. Could not put down and was entrenched in the story from the beginning.

What I liked most about this book was that one of Charlie’s, the main character, partners is another girl. It is unusual for a reverse harem to have a f/f relationship, so that was very cool to see.

Furthermore, it’s a good book with lots of interesting and different characters. Worth a read.

Kept me glued

This is a great read. Heartwarming but also suspenseful. The last few chapters especially. I felt like I was there a long with Flynn and Charlie. A well written book.
