Sylvain Neuvel dropped out of high school at age 15. Along the way, he has been a journalist, worked in soil decontamination, sold ice cream in California, and peddled furniture across Canada. He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago. He taught linguistics in India, and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. He likes to tinker, dabbles in robotics and is somewhat obsessed with Halloween. He absolutely loves toys; his girlfriend would have him believe that he has too many, so he writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course).
5 stars for that jaw-dropping ending! I gasped and literally hugged my iPad.
A brief Themis File, set after the ending of the trilogy. DO NOT READ THIS if you haven’t read the trilogy. Seriously, it won’t even make sense and it has a huge spoiler.
"[Mrs. Lebedev, there’s a man here to see you.] Not now. Tell him I’m— [Wait! Sir! You can’t just go in there!] It’s OK, Jamie. Let him in. Hi! I’m Katherine. I don’t think we’ve— Oh. Sure. By all means, take a… Euh. That’s my chair. Sir? Seriously, that’s my chair. Have we met? Am I supposed to know you? —I do not believe I have had the pleasure of your acquaintance." HE'S BACK!!!!!!!
I don't usually leave rating on the case files but with this one I had to. It was amazing and ended this series so good to where I'm upset it over. Please can I get one more book right after this case file? Please please please?? I have no other words to say but DAMN..
File Nº2491 is more about plot extension and a hammer-drop of an ending. While I didn't love the final book in the main trilogy, Only Human, this reminds me what I liked about the first two books from the get-go.
Okay, so it's been about a year and a half since I finished the trilogy, which is why it was a bit harder to get into this missing file. But that's on me and not the novella's fault. I loved the quick pace of the interaction and how distinctly different the characters read. And that ending! Seriously, stay away from this particular novella until aftee you've finished all three books.
This one is HYSTERICAL. It follows Katherine trying to recruit Eva again, with a lil cameo from our favourite mystery man along the way. It's worth reading purely for the Katherine/Eva banter, which is top notch! I forgot how hilarious Katherine is, y'know, for a self-serving psycho.
God damn, this really makes me want to reread the trilogy!
File No. 2491 perfectly encapsulates what I do and don't like about Neuvel's writing. He's great with a plot and that ending is crazy. Loved that. I just don't love a lot about his writing style, especially in the way of dialogue and stylisation of dialogue. Still a hell of a note to end the series on.
Kind of expected to give this maybe two stars, so I’m pleasantly surprised. I don’t like Katherine and initially thought this wasn’t the best duo to focus on in the last file, but it was interesting and ends on a high note. It honestly feels like a teaser for a possible continuation of the series since it introduces a couple new things. I enjoyed reading this, but it doesn’t feel like it should be the last addition to Themis Files.
