A Ghostly Suspect by Tonya Kappes
Book 8 of the Southern Ghostly Mystery series. Paranormal cozy mystery. Can be read as a stand-alone. Last listed book in the series.
It’s been over a year since Emma has seen any ghosts. She’s been working on getting the funeral home back in the black financially. The temporary sheriff is watching Emma closely and she finds herself the suspect in a murder of a psychic.

The first chapter was a lot of recap. Maybe because of the years from the first book. This book also wrapped up quite a few questions and felt like it was the last book in the series.

Entertaining mystery series. Easy to read without too much drama. For most of the books, the killer was not easily discovered.
🎧 The audiobooks are well done by Tiffany Morgan. She made it easy to breeze through the series and get the full impact of the mysteries and antics of the characters.

A Ghostly Suspect by Tonya Kappes was one of those books that I could not put down. The plot was swiftly paced and the twists kept me totally confused.

I love the quirky characters in this series. Emma Lee is in a tight spot in this one and she has lost a friend and mentor. I love Granny! She is one southern lady who knows who she is and how she wants to live her life now. Jack Henry is adorable in this one, too. He supports Emma Lee and tries so hard to keep her out of trouble. He's a great support for her and accepts her gift which is a huge plus to me. I really enjoyed the blossoming friendship between Emma Lee and Mazie Watkins. They made a great team in this one and I really hope that she doesn't leave Sleepy Hollow. There's some hints as to new adventures for Emma Lee and Jack Henry in the future. I can't wait to see what Ms. Kappes has planned for their future.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.

A Ghostly Suspect is an entertaining story. Emma Lee Raines is an undertaker and a Betweener. She can talk to those who are stick in the In Between because they have murdered and unable to move on until Emma Lee figures out who murdered them. It has been a year since Emma Lee has seen a spirit in need. Emma Lee’s mentor (and psychic), Debbie Dually is found dead in the gazebo with an empty glass of sweet tea from Eternal Slumber next to her. Debbie needs Emma Lee’s assistance to cross over and Emma Lee needs to get herself off the suspect list. If you have not read A Ghostly Southern Mystery series, you will not be lost. The information a new reader needs is artfully woven into the story. There are a variety of quirky characters including Emma Lee’s Granny, Zula Fae Raines Payne. Mazie Watkins, the librarian, is an upbeat woman who loves helping Emma Lee solve crimes. I like her cheery personality. Tonya Kappes has an engaging writing style. It draws the reader into the book and holds their attention until the end. The paranormal element is intertwined into the story. I would like to see Emma Lee’s gift evolve. I keep hoping Granny will learn of the gift and become accepting of it (Instead of asking Emma Lee if her “funeral trauma” has returned). I truly enjoyed the clever mystery. The author upped her game with this whodunit. Emma Lee actively investigated the crime and it is action packed. There are several suspects, good clues and misdirection. Emma Lee gets to visit a psychic convention with Mazie as part of the investigation. Ernest Peabody, the lawyer Granny hires for Emma Lee, was a treat. I loved how he handled Sheriff Trevor O’Neil. Jack Henry Ross, Emma Lee’s beau, is back and he finds himself in hot water. The ending is special and will delight fans of the series. A Ghostly Suspect has humor, mystery, action, and a touch of romance. I am keen to read the next A Ghostly Southern Mystery. A Ghostly Suspect is a delight with gossipmongers, psychics, an eager beaver suitor, a relentless competitor, a helpful spirit, a merry librarian, a tedious copper and one overworked undertaker.

This is book eight in A Ghostly Southern Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Emma Lee just can’t help herself but get involved when she needs to help a murder victim cross over.
Love the characters in this series. Wonder what is in store for Granny. Always love the humor and small town feel of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky.
Ending surprised me. Can’t wait to see what adventures are ahead for John Henry and Emma Lee.

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it. Opinions are my own.

An interesting turn of events has Emma the main focus of a murder investigation once again, but will she figure it out in time to help her new ghostly client before she joins the client in the "between" stage of life!?! An excellent plot that is well crafted to create intrigue and entertainment mixed with a unique assortment of characters to delight the reader! The audio version of this series has been loads of fun to listen to and now I have to wait and see if the author will delight us with a new book!

Synopsis:

A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It's all in a day's work for Emma Lee Raines . . .

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story right from the start. I felt like I was right there in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, visiting with Emma Lee and her friends. I always feel like I should be sipping a glass of sweet tea while I am reading this series.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Granny is a real pistol and she is so funny, Emma Lee has her hands full with her. Jack Henry is a great boyfriend and he is really trying to accept Emma Lee’s “ability”.

The mystery is well written and moved along at a nice even pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written cozy mystery. If you enjoy paranormal with your cozy, like I do, then you definitely want to read this book and series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

A reluctant 3 stars for me because I did like the ending. HOWEVER, can I say how much Emma ticked me off in this book? Her mentor has been murdered and she’s a suspect, the new sheriff is determined to arrest her for the murder and Emma along with Mazey, her new BFF and co-idiot is just as determined to muck things up. From pretending to be the murder victim, to a little Breaking and entering which leads to devastating consequences for John Henry’s job, Emma has ZERO concern for how her actions affect the lives of her loved ones, in that she is just like her grandmother- cut from the same cloth and I just couldn’t find the humor in that. I was hoping by book 8 the author would have Emma grow up already and think of others, think before she acts, not be so reckless, for goodness sake she’s over 30!! Ughhhhh why must they continue to write such dimwitted MC and pass them of as the IT girl; 🙄🙄🙄

Anyway, while I would have preferred John Henry to come to his senses and cut ties, the book ends with a happy and surprise twist for him and Emma. Oh and they solve the mystery 🙄🙄

"A Ghostly Suspect" earns 5/5 Sweet Teas...Engaging Fun!

Tonya Kappes' A Ghostly Southern Mystery is back with number eight! "A Ghostly Suspect" opens with Emma Lee Raines relishing in her ghost-free existence these past two years, gaining new pre-need funeral clients, and making Eternal Slumber the go-to place to send loved ones off to the next world. But, it doesn't last when Debbie Dually, friend and psychic, interrupts Emma Lee's meeting emphatic about having Emma admit she sees "murdered dead people." Her emotional confrontation with Emma Lee is partly witnessed by the antagonistic sherif Trevor O'Neill, and when Debbie's body is later found, that confrontation is all the evidence the sheriff needs to haul in Emma Lee. The threat and rumors fly around town that Emma Lee is the murder suspect and causes a serious downturn in business. She is warned to stay away from the investigation. She can't...Debbie won't let her! From competing businesses to psychic conventions, from grieving family to questionable exes, from breaking and entering to murder, from ghosts to more ghosts this book eight is exciting and fun! Relationships are again tested with Emma confronted by multiple ghosts, Granny Zula confronted with eager suitors, and Emma and Jack Henry confronted with additional conflicts. I always enjoy the first-person narrative sharing Emma Lee's inner thoughts, fears, and frustrations along with vivid descriptions and insightful dialogue. This is continues to be one of my top ten favorite series always with a clever mystery, wonderful characters, and a bit of Southern snark! Highly recommended! Suggestion? Granny Zula's Sweet Tea recipe sans the cyanide!

Disclosure: I received an ARC. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Southern charm, ghosts, and a good mystery what more can you really ask for in one amazing book? This one covers all of that as we follow Emma Lee who runs a funeral home. Business is booming when a physic friend of hers turns up only to found dead later making Emma Lee the main suspect. With the cops targeting her she ends up investigating on her own until she finds herself in some very deep trouble. Full of Southern character that makes you want move there while keeping you hooked on the story. If you like cozies with a touch of the supernatural then look no further then this. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Emma Lee Raines is excited with how well her funeral home is doing, she would never wish anyone dead but she appreciates all the business coming her way. When a psychic friend of hers stops by and really needs to talk they end up getting into an argument, and before Emma can figure out what is going on Debbie leaves. Later that day Emma is shocked to find out that not only is Debbie dead her ghost is hanging around waiting for Emma to solve her murder. It soon comes to light that she was poisoned and the police are looking straight at Emma. You see the tea and glass that Debbie drank from look just like the ones Emma uses at the funeral home. Emma knows that she must find a killer and soon because her business is being affected, people are starting to move their loved ones to the only other funeral home in town. The suspect list seems to grow as she is looking for clues into who killed her friend and why. There is a stalker who threatened Debbie, an ex-husband who turns out not to be and ex, and several other psychics. With so many places to look, Emma is afraid she'll go bankrupt before she figures it all out. Follow along as Emma, along with her best friend, investigate the murder of Debbie in hopes of finding a killer. This is such a fun series and truly brings the south to life. I love the characters, sayings, and just the craziness of it all.

This was first published on my blog "Lecture toute une Aventure"

Poor Emma, being a betweener sure is never easy and it does impact a life a lot...this time it's her "mentor" who is found dead and since they were seen together just before Emma is the suspect. Thankfully she still has support in Granny ( using her charms to get her an lawyer), Jack henry, her lover, and Mazie her new "assistant".

This book is a great addition top the series but could easily be read as stand alone too which makes it just even better. As each time we have a lot of humour in it, lot of investigation and action and just the right dose of romance to make it a page turner we devour in one sitting. The twists were really well done to keep us second guessing culprits.

I really loved this book but i admit some of Debbie 's predictions made me quite worried and impatient for next book . It's no clihhanger , this investigation is solved but we just get a good hint about some question and possible events we just want more.

So once again a perfect cozy mystery with a great southern setting not to be missed!!

The funeral business is coming up roses.

A lighthearted fast read that you will love. Slightly tongue in cheek but a fun read. The plot revolves around the murder of her mentor, Debbie, and how she ends up as the main suspect. The characters are as zany, quirky as ever and Granny's love life takes on a new turn.
When Debbie rushes into her funeral home she has to find her off as she's in the middle of a consultation. Then when Debbie ends up dead, she ends up the number one suspect. With the rival home taking her clients and Debbie's ghost turning up she has to act fast to find the real killer before she ends up on a murder charge. Was it a disgruntled client? Or perhaps her ex husband who isn't really an ex? Or is there another reason for the murder? With John Henry in trouble, her funeral home in jeopardy, her rivals bad mouthing her around town, a heartbroken son and Granny's love life out of control - can she bring some semblance of order back into her life? Or will there be another major event?

Tonya Kappes has done it again. I couldn’t put this book down. Just had to find out who did it. I love the characters in this series. I love that Jack Henry is always willing to help Emma Lee and hopefully her friend Mazie will stick around to help her. They make a great team. LOVED the surprise twists ending. More than one twist. Didn’t see all of that coming. And John Howard is an awesome character because he’s so silent and always around to save the day. He never seems to make fun of Emma Lee like a lot of the townsfolk do. Granny’s got some fun adventures ahead too. Will miss Debbie. She was a great addition but hopefully her son will show up in future stories. Such a wonderful fun series. It was definitely my pleasure to review an Advance Reader Copy.

Emma Lee Raines is a 'betweener' for ghosts who need help solving their murders so they can go 'rest in eternal peace. Debbie Dually is the person who told Emma she wasn't crazy, she had 'funeral trauma' after being hit in the head. Now, it is Debbie that needs Emma's help. As she tries to help Debbie find the person responsible for her demise, Emma becomes the prime suspect! This then brings Emma's boyfriend and State Trooper back to Whispering Falls to find out what happened or else Emma could be sent to prison for a long time! I just love the characters that Tonya develops in her books. They are so 'real' they could be your next-door neighbor, crazy Aunt, or overbearing mother! Another great story by Tonya Kappes! A Ghostly Suspect is Book 8 in A Ghostly Southern Mystery Series.

I could not put this book down. My jaw dropped at who was murdered and when the murderer was revealed I said y'all NO WAY! Never saw it coming. There was quite a few twists, and I LOVE that!

I love the small town setting in Kentucky and all of the characters I have come to love. Her characters are so well developed and real people you would meet and know in your town.

The author has crafted another well written story that will leave you guessing until the very end.

I cannot wait for the next book in this series to see what Emma Lee is up to next.

Love these characters. They are so fun. When Emma's friend is murdered, Emma is the number one suspect. She can't sit back and wait for them to arrest her, she has to find the killer herself. There are plenty of suspects and maybe she should look a little closer to home.

Emma Lee Raines is the owner of Eternal Slumber one of 2 funeral homes in Sleepy Hollow, KY. After an accident, Emma developed an ability to see ghosts but not just any ghosts, ghosts who died under suspicious circumstances. Emma needs to solve their murders in order to help the ghosts crossover. It has been some time since Emma has seen any ghosts so when her mentor shows up wanting to know if she can still see ghosts Emma doesn’t answer right away. Shortly after Emma sees a ghost of someone close to her and the new Sheriff suspects Emma is involved in the death. Now Emma has two reasons to solve the crime and quickly.

This is a very interesting and entertaining storyline. Even though this is book 8 in the series you can definitely enjoy the book as a stand-alone mystery. The characters are well developed with quirky charming personalities. The plot is very fast paced with several well placed red herrings. I had a hard time putting this book done as I had to find out who the killer was and was surprised at the big reveal. I recommend this book to cozy mystery and paranormal mystery fans.

Emma Lee has a special gift. She can see and communicate with dead murder victims. With them helping she can get them justice so they can cross over. Her latest client is Debbie Dually. She dies right after talking with Emma which makes her the prime suspect. Can she solve the case and stay out of prison? Emma cares about her family and her business, Eternal Slumber. I felt bad that she needed to keep her gift a secret. At least she can rely on Jack Henry and Mazie Watkins. I wanted them to get answers. Tonya Kappes writes sharp dialogue and strong characters that add to the suspense. Sleepy Hollow has plenty of action and her residents are quirky yet caring. I enjoyed this action packed story. There are many suspects with a motive as well as an unexpected twist so that I wasn't sure who killed Debbie. Since I had to know who did it, I read the book in one sitting.

I have missed Emma Lee. A lot takes place in this book. Emma Lee’s friend is the ghost that needs her help to solve her murder, Emma Lee is a suspect, and her beau helps her out even though it gets him in hot water. Granny is still a hoot and Emma Lee is still as sweet and determined as ever to fulfill her job as a betweener, especially for a good friend. I have enjoyed this whole series!

Grammar, words transposed, words misspelled is horrible in all books so many errors I found and a friend of mine that read the series with me. . Disappointed with all the errors in the books. The book stories are great excellent keep you wanting more.
However, since I have read the series from book 1-7. Books 6 & 7 were slowing down & pages in books are getting shorter, don't need recipes.

A GHOSTLY SUSPECT, the eighth installment in the Ghostly Southern Mystery series, is great fun.

Emma Lee once again finds herself in the middle of a murder examination when her psychic friend Debbie dies and needs help crossing over. She is also busy trying to orchestrate Granny’s love life, keeping her funeral home customers happy, avoiding arrest, and she manages to get her boyfriend Jack Henry into trouble.

As always, Kappes entertains readers with her conversational writing style, breezy humor, quirky characters, and wonderful Southern small town setting. The resolution of the mystery took me by surprise, and the book ends with the promise of more adventures with endless possibilities. Recommended.

I received and ARC of this title and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Who would want to kill a physic in Sleepy Hollow? Certainly not Emma Lee?
A Ghostly Suspect by Tonya Kappes is a delightful story with mystery, a touch of paranormal and real-life issues all done with Ms. Kappes wit and southern charm. I adored this book.
Emma Lee Raines
Our Sleuth is Emma Lee, the current owner of Eternal Slumber Funeral Home. She is also a Betweener, which means that she can see and speak to the dead but only those that have been murdered. Emma is tasked with helping the ghost of the murdered victim find out what happened to them so that the spirit can move on.

Emma has a lot going as sole owner the funeral home, being in a long distance relationship with Jack Henry, the former Sheriff of Sleepy Hollow, who is now a Kentucky State Trooper. She also has to keep an eye on her Grandma Zula. Then there are the townsfolk continually gossiping about her. But Emma is strong and handle it. I like that about her. Somehow she keeps it together when I am not sure I could.
Things I liked about the story

I adore the rules of southern etiquette that Emma tries to uphold. Along with the other ladies. Oh, and the Baptist nod is cute.
Then there is Jack Henry; he is such a good sport. You can tell how much they love each other. But seriously, he is going to have to get used to breaking the rules if he is going to keep up with Emma Lee.
Zula Fae Raines Payne is pretty awesome. She is the town catch for the older set. Zula wants to be herself, and she doesn’t need a fulltime man expecting her to wait on them. However, that doesn’t mean that she wants to sit at home alone all of the time.
Debbie Dually is pretty neat. I would totally be one of her regulars. She is a genuine psychic, not one of those fake ones who give you vague answers that you don’t have any idea what to do with.
Sleepy Hollow is a great little town filled with the eccentric characters that come out of Ms. Kappes incredible mind.
I also like the way things happened in the end. That is all I am saying about that so you will have to read it for yourself.

A Ghostly Suspect CRFive Stars
A Ghostly Suspect by Tonya Kappes is laugh out loud funny, which I did by the way. My stepdad thinks I am crazy for sure. This book is the first that I have read in the Ghostly Southern Mystery series, but it won’t be the last.

I have to tell you; I totally recommend all of Tonya Kappes books. She has this way of sucking you right into the story and make you feel like you are there. So, if you are looking for a cozy mystery with a touch of the paranormal and a lot of fun and southern charm, then you should read A Ghostly Suspect.
