The president declares war based on a lie. Can Jacob Stearne stop him before the world descends into chaos?
Jacob longs for a quiet suburban life, maybe find a wife and start a family. Everyone else wants him to wade through paramilitary assassins to find an admiral accused of treason. What he needs to know is why Indian government agents are following him. And what happened to the first Sabel agent who went in search of the officer?
After finding her birth mother through DNA, Pia Sabel isn’t sure she wants to connect with the woman. Bio-mom is the VP and possibly involved in the murder of Pia’s adopted parents. Is the president forcing a war under false pretenses? Can she use the woman for access to the administration she wants to destroy?
On a rainy day when I was ten, I was transported to eighteenth century England where I met Captain Billy Bones, heard the tapping of Blind Pew’s cane, and witnessed the treachery of Long John Silver. When I closed the cover of Treasure Island, I thought to myself: When I make stuff up, I get in trouble. I need to become a writer.
Which was the career I planned on pursuing. Planned on …
At 17, I was homeless, wandering from one minimum wage job to another. At 19, I found purpose in life when I adopted a 3-year-old girl and raised her (she’s 51 now and lives across town). Children need a lot of things that cost money, so I shelved the writing idea and pursued a career in technology, selling products and services to Fortune 500 company executives.
Along the way, I met and married the love of my life. We added two children (now grown and living in LA and NYC) and carved out a life. When I’d made all the gold I could eat, I returned my focus to the career I’d always wanted: writing adventures filled with thrills and mysteries.
My beloved wife passed unexpectedly in early 2024. Now, I spend my time talking to my imaginary friends and hiking a small mountain in my hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona. I hope you enjoy the Sabel Security Series, and the characters of Jacob Stearne and Pia Sabel. As of this writing, there are sixteen novels completed and two more in my head. I plan to keep writing them until my mortal ink dries up.

Not having read any of the previous books, I did not have a nostalgic element associated with my reading experience. I was unfamiliar with the characters and the writing style as well. Even so, this book is a complete book in itself. I did not feel at any point that I was missing out on something. This political thriller is so far off the wall, yet so realistic in the contemporary scenario. I loved the fictional representation of the President and Jacob felt like any other protagonist in a thriller.
Throughout the book, I was comparing scenes and characters with movie characters I had adored and the pages flew by. The imaginary character Mercury reminded me so much of Ganesh from Sacred Games, Jacob felt like Jack reacher. There were so many plot twists and I was constantly second-guessing what was happening and what might happen next. The only thing I didn't like was Pia's character with her fickle-mindedness.
This book does get bonus points for the plot though. Running different storylines simultaneously and still making them converge is what I loved about the author. The writing style helps in ensuring that everything makes sense in the reader's mind. Will surely recommend.
This might only reflect on Seeley James trying some product placement for a future contract with Frito-Lay/PepsiCo, but the word does turn up 33 times in scenes depicting the White House.
Readers who were enraged by Seeley James’ savaging of Donald Trump through his character Chuck Roche, in previous novels (the latter word being pronounced as “roach” by those who do not love him, and by his lackies as “Row-SHAY”) need, of course, to avoid this one. Roche’s megalomania builds to the point where he declares himself “Zenith Man”, the pinnacle of man’s achievement. Not quite emperor status, like Kim Jong-un, which apparently involved not having an anus.
All individuals serving at the White House are treacherous self-serving politicians. Sabel Security operatives engage in intense gun battles, usually outnumbered by their enemies, and hampered by their requirement to use non-lethal rounds. To Seeley’s credit, the buildup of those gunfights, the firefights themselves, and the aftermaths, have a kind of actual military cachet, unlike too many other authors who write as if for bad-straight-to-DVD/Netflix consumption.
I thoroughly like the character Pia Sabel, and all of the other female employees at Sabel Security. Each is uniquely different from the others. The males at Sabel continue to be well-muscled warriors, each with an interesting backstory, and Seeley James’ new character – Rick – shares central character Jacob Stearne’s issues with PTSD, which the author treats in a fairly compassionate and supportive way. Of course, Jacob Stearne continues to be laden with the burden of the God Mercury whose interventions both helpful and confounding continue to be a Seeley James readers’ favourite.
My rating is a 3.5 star, rounded up. I didn’t dislike this one enough to settle on three stars. And I will purchase the next one in the series – Death and Conspiracy – more out of habit, than for any other reason. And for me, this particular habit is far more benign than some of my other ones.
I loved this whole series, but this book is perhaps the most satisfying. The tongue-in-cheek parody of the Zenith Man is spot on and simply terrific! All Sable Security family are still thriving, with a new character to absorb. This series is “can’t wait for the next one to come out” fantastic, and I sincerely hope this isn’t the end!
A political thriller that will keep you up at night! More action, twists, and backstabbing than you can shake a stick at. Pia has stepped up to the big leagues and so have the stakes. Hold on to your hat, it’s one heck if a ride!
Pia is such a beautiful person and Jacob makes me giggle . Roche I hated and Hunter never could be nice. Love the story can't wait for more . May the Gods be with you.
Another chapter in the saga of Pia and associates. A story full of intrigue and action that is frighteningly realistic. A book you'll want to keep reading no mater how late.
As always a thriller from beginning to end. I love your characters very much. Pia is very is very exciting as are all thr rest of your characters. Can’t wait to read the next book
Little too long. Thought the caricature of the president went a little too far. Still a very interesting plot and characters. See somewhat as plausible an outfit like the Red Jackets. Still enjoyed the book quite a bit
