MY TAKE It's an interesting world that Jones has created, both the supernatural elements and the political ones. The powers that Rose has are interesting. Normally when you think of a succubus, you think of a she-demon or vampire-type who seduces men, usually through sexual activity. Yeah, that's not Rose. But she does "draw' things from people and has the ability to manipulate them. And there are people who want to control those abilities.
The characters are interesting and engaging, and there's even a side romantic plotline. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Anna Rose Carver works dead-end jobs to avoid the attention of the elite of her kind who secretly run the government and treat humans like pumping stations. Her low profile isn't low enough when the Society splits and the elite in their ivory towers draft low-level succubus like her to be their foot soldiers to battle their civil war.
Hunted, charmed, and conscripted, Rose lifelong pattern of mistrust and avoidance is challenged when her family is kidnapped for something far more deadly than being mere soldiers.
Those in charge thought they could shape Rose into an obedient foot solider. They forgot roses have thorns.
