Great book! Alas, Doggerland is just a fictional place but I was so taken with the story and the wonderful descriptions that I got sucked in (listened to the audio version) that it was so believable. So, believable that I sit here, writing this wanting Doggerland to exist so that I could go there. Felsteg (Fatal Isles) is the first book in a series about Detective Inspector Karen Eiken Hornby and if you like island stories like Ann Cleeves Shetland, and/or like long complicated stories (many characters, past events that affect the present time) like Nele Neuhaus Bodenstein & Kirchhoff series then you will love this book.

По-перше, це книга, яка подарувала ще одну обсцесію (https://t.me/daphniasuggests/6079), про що я вже писала в коментах.

По-друге, це той варіант детективу, який я люблю: із додатковим корисним навантаженням (тут — постійні кпини щодо культурної різниці між шведами, датчанами, британцями та мешканцями вигаданої острівної держави там десь між ними).

🐈‍⬛ А ще вони часто їли рибу, різного виду та приготування, з-за чого я тепер теж хочу риби.

📖 В цілому ж #Дафа_радить, хоча й десь на середині було трішки затягнуто. Але це можна списати на те, що авторка так намагалася передати оте відчуття безсилля, коли розслідування не рухається з мертвої точки.

📖 Все витягнула дуже динамічна (хоча й не скажу, що прям неочікувана) кінцівка.

📍 Це перший роман серії, яка на сьогодні нараховує 7 книг, а ще я побачила, що "Фабула" вже відкрила передзамовлення (https://fabulabook.com/info-doggerlan...) на другий роман. Обов'язково буду читати.

My husband had become obsessed with this book. Not because of the story – he said it was good but not exceptional (I agree) – but because of the setting on the fictional islands of Doggerland.
Now, Doggerland did once exist, and was inhabited by Mesolithic people, up until about 6,000 years ago, when it was submerged at the end of the last ice age, perhaps following a tsunami.

However, in this series of books, Doggerland is high and dry: three islands situated between England and Denmark, with all the mod cons found today elsewhere in Europe (including mobile phones), and a population mix of Scandinavian, Dutch and English.

“The residents of Noorö – with their predominantly Norwegian and Swedish heritage – are still described as industrious, quiet and God-fearing, while their cousins on the southernmost island – where the population has more extensive Danish and Dutch roots – are said to be frivolous and leave their nets in the water for too long. In between is Heimö with its unholy mix of British, Scandinavian and continental European heritage. … Yet, although the thieves, murderers and other criminals have never actually been as numerous as some would claim, the main island is, according to the natives of Noorö and Frisel, mostly populated by fish poachers, land owners, shipping magnates and others of their ilk, who don’t mind enriching themselves at the expense of others. And Dunker, the capital, is, naturally, the worst.”

Every night, when watching the TV, my husband has to determine the next day’s weather for London – and Doggerland! After several months of this, I just had to read the book.
The story is a police procedural, with main protagonist Karen Eiken Hornby investigating the murder of Suzanne Smeed, the ex-wife of her superior. The murder takes place on the night of the local festival of Oistra, when everyone in Doggerland is partying and drunk.
The first couple of chapters are very good – ending with a lovely twist – and then it is down to the investigation and initially a complete absence of clues. Enquiries show that not one person has anything good to say about Suzanne. She was universally disliked – but did anyone hate her enough to kill her?
Meanwhile, on Doggerland there are also a number of house break-ins and thefts followed by arson, and a very brutal serial rapist/murderer. Could all these crimes be linked?
I was enjoying most of the book, up until the final reveal. The motive for murder, and the identity of the murderer just did not seem plausible to me. Still, the setting was great, and the main characters were well developed, so I will probably continue with the series and to follow the weather forecasts!

Атмосферний детектив, оцінюю на 4,5.
Багато деталізації, що врешті-решт призвело до затягування сюжету в середині оповіді. Гарні описи Ланґевіку та інших місцин, сіл Доґґерландських островів, а також море, природа, рослинність - гарно дуже прописані авторкою.
Про все, що вона розповідає, робить це детально і зі смаком, до прикладу про різноманіття риби на ринку! Хотілося дуже і самій спробувати тріску, або підсмажену кільку 🤗
Інколи просто не вистачало самого розслідування, адже воно затягнулося і здавалося, не рухалося... Але розумієш, що це такий авторський стиль, про все неспішно, змістовно і цікаво.
Закінчення роману динамічне, є натяки на те, про що буде наступна книга серії...
Буду обов'язково продовжувати знайомство з творчістю Марії Адольфсон та її серією "Доґґерланд".

This debut novel and first in a series takes place in the fictitious Doggerland Islands, located in the North Sea, midway between Denmark and Yorkshire. Because of this, the atmosphere lies somewhere between a Scandinavian police procedural and other series set on remote islands such as Anne Cleeves’ Shetland stories and Peter May’s Lewis trilogy. This includes a local populace with somewhat insular, often xenophobic attitudes.
The central character is Police Inspector Karen Eiken Hornby; a middle-aged woman with a tragic past who has returned to the islands after working for a while in London. After a night of heavy drinking at Oistra, the annual oyster festival, she’s shocked to wake up in a hotel bed alongside her boss, Jounas Smeed, a man she’s hardly on best terms with. As bad as that is, things soon turn much worse when the Smeed’s ex-wife Suzanne, a neighbour of Karen’s, is found brutally murdered.
To complicate a difficult investigation even further there are flashback chapters to the 1970s when a hippie cult tries to establish itself on the island and, it appears, that was where Suzanne was born. Karen’s attempts to investigate this aspect further are met with scepticism and derision by her colleagues.
For a debut author, this is an intelligent, well constructed thriller which keeps the reader guessing right until the end. The fictional setting is also brave and challenging.

Головна героїня прокидається у готелі після ночі з босом, про яку дуже шкодує. Пікантності ситуації додає те, що він очолює кримінальний відділ поліції.

Хотілося якогось скандинавського детектива і під цією обкладинкою ви точно його отримуєте. Трішки затягнуто, можна було б динамічніше, але сумнівно, що авторка ставила собі це за мету. Головна героїня застрягає з розслідуванням і сторінки, де нічого особливо не відбувається, передають нам це відчуття безсилля. Водночас закінчення мене порадувало. Я міркувала, думала про різні конфігурації, а кінець історії показав мені, що необов’язково аж так ускладнювати і закручувати, щоб сподобалося.

It is the morning after the fest of Oistra, the oyster festival on the Doggerland islands and Police inspector Karen Hornby wakes up with a hangover which turns out to be the least of her problems as she woke up next to her direct boss. She of course sneaks away like a thief in the night back to her own home. When she wakes up again she receives a call that a woman has been murdered and she is the lead in the investigation. Because the murder-victim is her bosses ex-wife.
And so begins an investigation that looks into the lives of people Karen knows and also back into the past of the murder victim which is frowned upon as it does not seem to deliver any suspects and as long as her boss is not cleared of any wrongdoings Karen remains in charge. And with the strange for a place with such Scandinavian influences sexist behaviour driven male influence on the local police-force Karen does enjoy herself.
In this debut by Maria Adolfsson does deliver an excellent police thriller that leaves you guessing until she is ready to lay her cars on the table and deliver a somewhat unexpected climax does does credit to the careful constructed tale in which everybody is given an interesting and almost decent background in a story that introduces a new Island based series.

The actual Doggerland Islands are also a fictitious group of Islands situated somewhere in the North-sea and the writer has done some pretty decent descriptions that make the place feel real enough. Anyhow this book was excellent enough to warrant a return to the series and with part 2 just being translated into the Dutch language and released I will undoubtedly visit the writer and the Islands again.
Well advised reading material by an excellent new female writer who delivers the goods.

5 Stars - Yay! Hooked!

A great start to a new crime series. I listened to the Swedish author Maria Adolfsson first novel in the Doggerland crime series, a 15:42 hours audiobook narrated by a favorite, Angela Kovács.

Our main character is the middle aged Detective Inspector Karen Eiken Hornby. This story is set in a fictional Doggerland, a smaller country on some islands in a chilly northern Europe (between the UK and Denmark).

A woman is dead, probably killed by a burglar ... or? The woman is also the ex wife to Karen’s boss. A man you want to avoid and don’t get to much, after a hilarious stupid hot night on a hotel, involved with. Her boss is maybe good looking man and a great police but in every other way a unpleasant, horrible man who doesn't like women, such as Karen, trying to make their own career.

Wow, I couldn’t stop. I kind of lived with this audiobook the whole weekend. So good and I was hooked. ~ Looking forward to follow Karen in next book #2 - Stormvarning.

Heb “misleiding” van Maria Adolfsson mogen lezen voor de sterrenthriller-leesclub, ik vind het een aanrader.
Verhaal pakte me meteen.
Enigste (hele kleine) minpunt: Begin vond ik zo af en toe wel iets te veel details qua omschrijving omgeving enzo, maar boek krijgt later meer vaart. Einde zag ik niet aankomen, echt verrassend!
Kijk uit naar een vervolg, benieuwd hoe het verder gaat met de hoofdpersoon.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bonnier Books for an advance copy of Fatal Isles, the first novel in a projected trilogy set in the fictional island nation of Doggerland and featuring Detective Inspector Karen Eiken Hornby.

Karen is put in charge of the murder investigation into the death of Suzanne Smeed, because her ex-husband is the head of CID and the chief person of interest. The case drags and Karen begins to suspect that the answers lie deep in Suzanne’s past.

Fatal Isles is a mixed bag of good and not so good. At its heart it is a police procedural with an interesting and worthwhile plot but it gets bogged down in extraneities which sometimes make the plot hard to find and definitely slow it down.

The novel is mostly told from Karen’s point of view so the reader can speculate along with her and gradually get to know her and her history. This is well done as she has a story to tell and a continual fight against the misogyny in her department, which, incidentally, she is well able to counteract. The downside is that the reader has to plough through pages of unnecessary detail about her everyday life and how she came to meet her friends. Yes, it adds to the picture of her character, but it slows the impetus of the investigation. I don’t feel the author has the balance right.

There are chapters of the novel that skip back to 1970 and cover the relationship between Per and Anne-Marie. I came to find them fascinating and as the story unfolds on point about human behaviour. In fact I think the author is very astute at human emotions and situations- I could feel Karen’s excruciating embarrassment when she did her walk of shame after her one night stand with her boss.

Doggerland makes me think of crime fiction’s Iceland although it is several islands. The mixture of urban and its associated blights and with the rural in all its judgemental glory, wealth vs poverty etc. is fully played out. At the same time it is situated in the same place as the prehistoric Doggerland before it submerged, bang in the middle of the North Sea between England, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I think this is supposed to suggest a cultural, albeit it white European, melting pot, but what you really get is insularity and a suspicion of outsiders. I don’t think it works particularly well as something unique.

Fatal Isles is a slow read and it doesn’t make for compulsive reading but it is worth it for the final twists.

Debut novel from a new author for me. Fatal Isles is a standard police procedural which follows the well worn path of a much maligned detective who, against all her fellow officers advice, follows her gut instinct to ultimately be proven right. The improbable solution became instantly predictable around 100 pages from the end when a vital piece of information is revealed. I also felt the motive for the crimes was pretty shallow and it was hard to believe it could possibly engender enough passion in anyone for them to commit murder.

Nice writing style but I found the story difficult to engage with because of the painstaking level of detail even everyday tasks are described in. Tana French has a similar style but somehow her details gradually give flesh to the characters and their motivations which ultimately become central to the story. I didn’t feel this was the case here where it just felt so unnecessary and simply distracting from the main plot.

All in all it was ok but I’m afraid it didn’t do enough for me to want to read the next in the series.

Kryminałów nigdy dość, szczególnie w polskim czy skandynawskim wydaniu, jak u szwedzkiej pisarki Marii Adolffson, która zaczyna przygodę z polskim czytelnikiem od pierwszego tomu serii „Doggerland. Podstęp”.

Maria Adolfsson wykreowała swój własny kawałek bardzo mrocznej, skandynawskiej rzeczywistości – morski i zawilgotniały, spowity mgłą i kłamstwem. Tutaj każdy kolejny dzień to dzień kaca, to dzień zbrodni, to dzień skrajnego zmęczenia. Ta ciężka atmosfera „Doggeralandu. Podstęp” wydaje się największym wyróżnikiem i tym samym najmocniejszą strona tej powieści, dzięki której czytelnik od razu może przenieść się w ten fikcyjny nadmorski świat. Tutaj każdy kryzys gonie następny kryzys, każda decyzja może być małym końcem czyjegoś świata. Do tego mała społeczność, która nie lubi wyjawiać swoich tajemnic. Nawet jeśli sięgają daleko w przeszłość.

„Doggerland. Podstęp” nie zaskakuje formą, niemniej Maria Adolfsson zadbała o to, by czytelnik z przyjemnością szedł tropem mrocznej zagadki od początku do samego końca, o ile jest miłośnikiem takich właśnie skandynawskich literackich doznań.

Felsteg (Fatal Isles) is a brilliant new series by author Maria Adolfsson. Featuring an enigmatic female main protagonist and an atmospheric setting in the fictional Doggerland, it provides both a chilling mystery as well as some great armchair travel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and dove into the second book in the series stright away. Highly recommended to lovers of Nordic crime fiction.

An enjoyable read. Translated from Swedish but I don't think anything was "lost in translation". Interesting main character, Karen Eiken Hornby. She returned to the place of her birth, after a harrowing thing happened to her.

Set in a fictional island in the North Sea, Doggerland, a murder occurs and Karen is put in charge of the investigation. I read this one and also listened to the audible - I found the Swedish pronunciation acceptable but what would I know - Ingie would be the expert in this field.


I hadn't figured out the "who dunnit?" aspect of it so it kept me interested to the end. I have already downloaded the next in the series (the book and audible).


My reading continues to be hit and miss - work, travel, etc. etc. etc. (cannot believe I used to read over 100 books in some years).

Så skönt med en deckare som primärt inte uppehåller sig vid bestialiska mord. Också befriande med en kvinnlig kriminalinspektör som inte uppför sig perfekt. Idén med de fiktiva öarna är fascinerande men även om namnen är en blandning av danska, engelska så blir det inte mer originellt än om historien utspelar sig på Shetland, jag som ville veta om namnen ska uttalas på danska eller engelska och om världshistorien har tagit någon annan vändning i och med Doggerland ...

An interesting idea wasted on a fairly standard whodunnit. The idea of a country between Denmark and Britain, with equal parts Scandinavian, Dutch and British heritage (though none of it apparently going back further than the 19th century or so), promises more worldbuilding than Adolfsson is interested in - it could just as well have been set in any coastal town in Scandinavia or Scotland, with a few small details changed - and the case itself isn't up to much. I like some of the character work, but... that's about it.

Dziękuję wydawnictwu W.A.B. za egzemplarz.

Jako że bardzo chętnie sięgam po kryminały/thrillery z każdego innego kraju niż Polska, nie mogłam się oprzeć pokusie przeczytania kryminału szwedzkiego.
Swoją drogą, muszę przyznać, że ten wygląd książki mi się podoba, cała ta kolorystyka bardzo satysfakcjonuje moją wewnętrzną srokę.

Historia zaczyna się w momencie, gdy zostaje zamordowana była żona szefa Karen. W związku z czym mężczyzna nie może prowadzić śledztwa, więc to zadaniem Karen wraz z przydzieloną jej ekipą jest rozwikłanie tej zagadki. Nie pomaga jej to, że nie każdy z zespołu za nią przepada, ona przespała się z szefem po pijaku i widziała ofiarę niedługo przed morderstwem. Na dodatek ma własne bolesne wspomnienia, które odzywają się od czasu do czasu.

Warto zwrócić uwagę, że Karen ma 50 lat, co też mi się podoba, bo na ogół wszyscy (a przynajmniej większość kobiet) mają ponad 20-30 lat, więc przyjemna odmiana. W kwestii bohaterów kłamałabym, gdybym powiedziała, że wszystkich polubimy, szczególnie, że sama Eiken ma z niektórymi na pieńku, a paru z nich swoim zachowaniem sprawi, że sami będziemy chcieli im przyłożyć. Ale w jakiś sposób dzięki temu mają swój charakter i są bardziej wiarygodni. Mamy też przedstawione kawałki ich własnego, prywatnego życia, a przynajmniej tej ważniejszej części grupy, dzięki czemu te postacie nie są taką szarą masą tylko od wykonywania swojej roboty.

Fikcyjny archipelag też jest dla mnie dużą zaletą, bo daje spore pole do popisu na wielu płaszczyznach. Autorka wyraźnie miała pomysł, bo to miejsce ma jakąś swoją historię, jakieś tradycje, ma nawet ‘’lepsze” i ‘’gorsze” dzielnice… Ciekawie buduje to klimat, ale warto mieć świadomość, że wymaga to jednak konkretnych opisów, żeby się z tym zapoznać. Mi to jednak nie przeszkadzało.

Postęp śledztwa nie bazuje mocno na śladach czy szukaniu dowodów, ale bardziej na rozmowach z ludźmi, którzy ofiarę znali i przez to stopniowym układaniu całych tych puzzli. Nie zawsze może być tak emocjonująco jakbyśmy chcieli, ale parę faktów na pewno może w jakiś sposób zaskoczyć. I nawet, gdy może się wydawać, że przewidziało się główny plot twist, to jednak ten plot twist ma jeszcze swój plot twist.

Mam w sumie tylko taki zarzut, że o ile opisy otoczenia mi nie przeszkadzały, to jednak chwilowa drobiazgowość w przypadku czynności, które wykonywała Karen już trochę tak.

No dobra, doceniam też ten mały polski akcent.

,,Podstęp’’ uważam za naprawdę ciekawy kryminał, który pozwala nam samemu w pewien sposób próbować rozwiązywać zagadkę. I nawet jeśli w trakcie czytania będziemy myśleć, że robi się to zbyt oczywiste, to jednak autorka będzie miała dla nas jakieś niespodzianki.

Non pensavo che questo noir scandinavo mi avrebbe affascinato.
Capisco perché ritenuto best seller e perché un romanzo di esordio ha fatto così tanto successo, gli elementi ci sono tutti.
1. Una storia intrigante. Neanche il lettore può immaginarsi la risoluzione del caso trattato perché gli indizi vengono centellinati e dati nel corso della storia.
2. Una protagonista tosta. L'ispettrice Karen Eiken Hornby è una donna incredibilmente forte e, allo stesso tempo, fragile. Deve combattere quotidianamente per il posto conseguito in un ambiente prettamente maschile e misogino.

Ci sono però alcune cose che mi hanno fato storcere il naso come l'evidente ostilità e disprezzo nei confronti di una donna all'interno della polizia che è un po' fuori contesto nella modernità attuale (anche se lungi da me dire che non esistono forme di discriminazioni in diversi ambiti lavorativi) e fin troppo marcato all'interno del romanzo.
è sempre vero però che l'ambientazione è stata creata ad hoc dalla scrittrice, infatti il romanzo è ambientato a Doggerland, un arcipelago immaginario situato tra la Gran Bretagna e la Scandinavia, nel Mare del Nord e che pertanto una mentalità un po' retrograda può essere parte dello scenario da lei creato.

Ho scoperto inoltre che è il primo di una serie e, sinceramente, sono proprio curiosa di vedere come proseguirà e quali altre indagini dovrà affrontare l'ispettrice Karen Eiken Hornby.

Dit verhaal speelt zich af in Doggersland. Een eilandengroep in de Noordzee, ergens tussen Denemarken, Groot-Brittanië en Nederland. Hoewel dat een fictief land is, heeft het vermoedelijk wel ooit bestaan en is het nu de Doggersbank. Dit land had er dus zomaar kunnen zijn, het heeft me het hele boek verwonderd. Doordat het verhaal vrijwel zonder aanpassingen ook gewoon in Denemarken of Nederland had kunnen plaatsvinden, speelt de wonderlijke locatiekeuze geen bijzondere rol van betekenis in het verhaal. En juist door de gekozen situering moet er vrij veel door de auteur worden uitgelegd, wat iets te veel tijd kost: de geografie, het rechtssysteem, landschap en klimaat, nationale feestdagen (Oistra), de hoofdstad en de wijken, de economie en zelfs wat meer triviale zaken als de munteenheid, drankjes en gerechten.

Verder is het boek vooral een traditionele whodunnit met een vrouwelijke detective in de hoofdrol, die zoals het genre betaamt voldoende door het leven getekend is om zich wat dat betreft te kunnen meten met de gehavende hoofdpersonen uit andere Scandinavische crimi’s zoals bijvoorbeeld Harry Hole. De verhaallijn is niet onaardig geconstrueerd, al zou wat meer spanning het leesplezier wel helpen. Er worden vrij veel karakters geïntroduceerd, waarbij niet iedereen meteen een duidelijke rol in het verhaal speelt: een dakloze ex-gitarist, een ex-vriendje die nu tv-journalist is, een bevriend homostel, etc. Wellicht dat de auteur deze karakters vast introduceert voor een van de volgende delen van deze serie. Die karakters maken in ieder geval voldoende nieuwsgierig om deel twee uit de serie ook te gaan lezen.

På Doggerland har den årliga ostronfesten Oistra just avslutats och många har en tung dag i dess bakvatten.
En kvinna hittas brutalt ihjälslagen i sitt kök och kriminalinspektör Karen Eiken Hornby får uppdraget att leda utredningen, där det visar sig att hennes osympatiske chef tidigare varit gift med offret.

Karen själv har, för ett fåtal år sedan, återvänt hem till Doggerland för att glömma det som varit. Alla bär på en historia, nu är det upp till Eiken att lista ut den mördande kvinnans.

”Felsteg” är första delen i deckarserien om Doggerland. En imponerande uppdiktad plats placerad där Doggers bankar nu ligger. Historien är en redogörelse av utredningen av mordet och blir för mig lite platt. Visst har den sina toppar och oväntade svängar, men lite för mycket redogörelse och för lite djup för mig.

Lite seg början, sen tog den fart även om slutet var lite väl galet.
Roligt med den fiktiva miljön dock! Och blev nog sugen på att läsa mera - lyxigt när det redan finns många flera böcker i serien!
