Pigloo the pig imagines himself as an explorer in this charming picture-book from American author Anne Marie Pace and British illustrator Lorna Hussey. Determined to get to the North Pole, he waits eagerly for the snow to start, taking his parents' good-humored comments and his older sister Paisley's teasing in his stride. In the end however, Paisley proves more supportive than expected, helping Pigloo to get to his destination, and showing him the "short" way home...

A sweet tale of sibling rivalry and then sibling cooperation, Pigloo is also a celebration of the important role that imaginative games play in a young child's life. The family dynamic here is believable - the parents' tolerant amusement, the sister's initial mocking - but also heartwarming, full of love and support. I liked the way that Pigloo interprets the comments of those around him in Pace's narrative, always relating things back to his important role as an explorer. I also liked the artwork - done in watercolor and graphite - which captures the joy of Pigloo's outdoor play, and the range of emotional states through which he passes. Recommended to anyone looking for picture-books about imaginative play, outdoor games in winter, and/or sibling relations between younger children.

I purchased this book for a kids' book drive at work because I am familiar with the author, but before handing it over I wanted to take a quick read.

And it is a quick read, perfect for a before-bedtime adventure. It is a charming, warm, book about a little explorer, his ambitious plans, and how all adventures are made better with a devoted support team. The pictures enhance the story beautifully, and this book will be at the top of my list for young readers!

Bright watercolor and graphite illustrations complement a sweet story of sibling rivalry and friendship. Pigloo is an adventurous sort, and while he waits for it to snow, he plans an expedition to the North Pole. After gathering all his supplies and his sled, he is forced to have patience for the right time to go outside. As older sisters sometimes do, his sister Paisley is quite a naysayer, but still, Pigloo is determined to reach his goal. As it turns out, though, Pigloo is a bit intimidated by the size of the hill in his backyard, and he receives some unexpected help from his sister who knows a shortcut to the North Pole. Together, the two decide to look for penguins at the South Pole after warming up inside. While there's nothing wrong with charting one's own course and having an adventure alone, sometimes it's even more fun with a companion, especially if that companion turns out to be a most amenable older sister. Who would have expected that to be the case? This one makes a good read aloud with a gentle reminder that allies come in different shapes and sizes and at the most unexpected moments.

Pigloo is a perfect-for-the-wintertime picture book featuring a darling young pig. Little Pigloo wants nothing more than to be a great explorer and bravely trek through the cold and snow to get to the North Pole. While his mom, dad, and especially his big sister all have their qualms, concerns and notes about his plans, Pigloo tries to remain hopeful about it all. One thing Pigloo has carefully considered and prepared are his special explorer snacks- his 'stores' as we learn; but the one thing he has not considered is just how much patience it requires to be an explorer- especially when one is waiting for a big snowfall!

When it finally snows enough, Pigloo makes it outside and 'considers the best way to get to the North Pole and back before lunch'. In a lovely story curve, readers get to see Pigloo's big adventure come to happy fruition as he is- unbeknownst to him- carefully helped by his big sister, Paisley. While Paisley had initially been a little downcast on Pigloo's big plans, it turns out that she comes through with a little magic to make Pigloo's dreams of exploration come true. What starts out as a seemingly straightforward story about a little pig's wintertime adventure ends up being an altogether very sweet story about kindness between siblings, and about just how much fun a grand imagination and believing in the impossible can be.

Anne Marie Pace, author of the Vamperina Ballerina books, and Lorna Hussey, illustrator of Not This Bear, have created a gentle and amiable story here that will likely go over well with kids during the winter season. Pigloo is an adorably illustrated pig with a big heart; kids and adult alike might appreciate his imagination and open, trusting nature. Readers who enjoy stories on the genial side- topped with a little lesson- think along the lines of Karma Wilson's Bear series, Greg E. Foley's Don't Worry Bear, the Chester Raccoon series, or the Llama Llama books- might particularly enjoy this sweet story.

Never underestimate what you can learn from a children’s book such as Pigloo by Anne Marie Pace, even if the learning is tongue-in-cheek. Pigloo, the Explorer, teaches how an explorer behaves and a couple of life lessons as well in a preschooler’s snow story.

The explorer must get together transportation (sled), proper clothing (hat, gloves, mittens), and stores (what explorers call their snacks in the backpack). He must read the map and learn the signs of the North Pole so he will know when he has arrived (a red-and-white striped pole and maybe a polar bear). He must consider the best route (so he will be back for lunch).

Life lessons include being patient (waiting for the snow), being brave (the trip to the North Pole is long and fraught with danger), minding his manners (taking his hat off at the table), and dealing with disappointment (no penguins at the North Pole, only at the South). He must also deal with a know-it-all older sister.

The book appeals to children who love the snow and whose imaginations are still intact. They will recognize the warm advice from the parents and even the bossy sister who comes through for Pigloo in the end.

L got this book as a Christmas present from her preschool teachers. It's very cute, and she has already asked to listen to it several times since opening it on Christmas. Big brother S enjoys it as well. It's a nice story about connecting with a sibling.

Pigloo waits for the snowfall so he can go exploring and find the North Pole. During his search he has a great adventure, and a finds surprise when he arrives at the North Pole.
