Hens and homicides in a cozy slice of paradise.

Something’s fishy in Maika’i, the cozy little Hawaiian town where Saffron Skye runs her egg farm and Brightblossom Events.

Along the boardwalk of Holoholo Street you’ll find a cheery market, a friendly kitchen store, and a cozy bookshop. But you’ll also find old secrets and new plots.

The town of Maika’i is gentle and friendly, and Saffron Skye is trying to keep it that way.

But that’s hard to do when you’re in the back of a Buick being kidnapped by a cruel woman and her henpecked husband. Now, Saffron must escape and make it to the secret wedding she’s been hired to arrange. A sizeable inheritance hinges on it going off without complication. But when a dead woman washes up on the shore behind the happy couple, Saffron is plunged into a murder investigation.

A secret wedding. A dead woman. Poisons and curses.

Henpecked: Book 4 in the Aloha Chicken Mysteries series of cozy-clean reads . . . with chickens.

Event planner and chicken farmer Saffron Skye does not expect to be kidnapped and detained over the details of a small wedding. After her harrowing escape, she makes it to the nuptials, a small event that's all but ruined when the dead body of Saffron's kidnapper washes up on the beach. The tangled trail leads our amateur sleuth to question the obvious answer and investigate further into Hawaii's wildlife and ethnic legends.

Well, the love triangle (rectangle? Vector polygon?) is a bit of an annoying distraction, but the mystery itself is cleverly crafted with just enough clues to keep readers on their toes. I really liked getting to meet marine biologists and learn about Hawaii's reefs, and spending time with the small town's many eccentric denizens is always a good time. Tikka the chicken made an appearance as well, as is only fitting and proper for such a good birb. Looking forward to the next one.

I'm not sure what it is about this series, but I really like it. I like Saffron's willingness to start over in a totally unfamiliar place - a chicken farm in Hawaii is a far cry from Washington DC, in more ways than one - and I like that she's making an effort to befriend the locals - and learn their traditions, customs and way of life. Her ability to distinguish minute shades of color is fascinating as well.

This story starts off with a bang, although it turns out to be a half-hearted bang. Still, a dead body turns up not long after, and Saffron lends her investigative skills to the tiny police department. There are plenty of suspects to think about, and I fell for several red herrings that distracted me from the real culprit. The reveal was surprising but not really unexpected, although I never would have guessed the motive.

I have the next several books from this series in my audio library, and I can't wait to see who (or what?) comes Home to Roost in the next book.

The deadly secrets of the sea

Terrific read. A plot of scheming greed that ends with murder. Wonderfully written and if you want to learn more about the dangers hidden in the waves whilst indulging in a good cozy mystery then this is the one for you. Shame her relationship has fallen apart, but that was obvious as soon as he moved back to his old life, and although she has found a new armor - I don't think it's a good match.
Getting kidnapped for planning a wedding was something she hadn't expected. Now the wedding was over but with one of the kidnappers dead, the sister of the bride, more questions raised their heads. Was it the husband? Was it the groom or the bride? Even the bride's son raises questions? With her boyfriend spending more and more time with his ex she knows that the relationship is doomed. Is Nike the one? Why does one of her renter's raise her hackles? Can she find the killer? Is it to do with the will? Will her new interest in snorkeling provide the information she needs?

really interesting plot, subtracted a star for errors in the printing.

These books are such enticing reads, and this plot was complex. I took away one star because there were errors in syntax, probably due to writing this on a computer, which I find very distracting. That being said, I love learning about chicken farming & egg production, and am excited to learn that each chicken has a personality, something I never imagined. The Hawaii backdrop is just marvelous, and makes me sad to think I’ll never get back there in the remainder of my life.
I’m happy to continue on with this series..
