Except for Daisy, Christmas means another of Uncle T's dreaded Christmas parties, complete with Christmas jumper and flashing antlers. And Oliver Cartwright. Gorgeous Oliver Cartwright. Who she hates.
Every year Daisy has to face insufferable Ollie and hear all about how BRILLIANT he is. Whereas Daisy has no job, no man and no idea how to fix things.
This Christmas, however, Daisy is determined things will be different. There will be no snogging Ollie under the mistletoe like when they were teenagers. No, this year she'll show Ollie that she's a Responsible Adult too. But as the champagne corks pop, and the tinsel sparkles, Uncle T has news of his own to share... and it could change Daisy's life forever...

5☆ An Endearing, Fun, Witty Romance with a Sprinkle of Heart Warming Festive Cheer.
I was overjoyed to see Zara had written a new Christmas Book and I couldn't wait to read it!
Four Christmases and a Secret is a delightfully Fun, Endearing, Witty, Heart Warming Romance.
Daisy always attends her Uncle Terence Christmas Parties. Which she loves as they are always lots of fun and in her favourite place, his bookstore! But things are about to change when Oliver sneaks a passionate kiss on Daisy under the mistletoe. But Oliver and Daisy are childhood friends and that wasn't supposed to happen... or was it?
Oliver and Daisy's Mums have always been very competitive about the two of them always trying to point score and get one up on each other using their childrens accomplishments. But Oliver is now very successful and Daisy... well not so much. Which leads to Daisy and Oliver becoming rivals despite their kiss!
I better stop there as i don't want to risk giving anything away!
I really loved Daisy, she's kind, caring, Funny, has a big heart, I loved the banter between her and Oliver. Her relationship with her Uncle T was so heart warming. In fact Uncle T was my favourite Character with his quirky, eccentric, loveable personality he lights up the pages.
Four Christmases and a Secret is a warm and Cosy, Feel Good, Endearing Romance, with wonderful quirky, loveable Characters, a juicy secret, plenty of laugh out loud moments and witt, enough Christmas sparkle, Emotion and Drama all wrapped up to make a perfect anytime read!
Another gem of a book by Zara Stoneley!
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Oh God, he is so not perfect for me. How can I go out with somebody who doesn’t like chocolate?
I am part of a couple! I have a date, and a dog. Sadly, mother is finding it hard to come to terms with what ‘vegan’ means. She thinks Tim’s just in denial and longing for something meaty to get stuck into. Her plan seems to be to sneak bits onto his plate thinking that the rest of us won’t notice, and Tim will be thrilled.
Ollie once left a list in the kitchen that he swears said ‘milk, steak, beans’ but I’m convinced said ‘meh, stench, gremlins ’. I’d thought he was commenting on my hygiene.
I have never seen my mother flap so much. She’s already claimed that my looks, brains, sex appeal, success and even the fact that my nails grow quite long before they break, are all down to genes. Hers.
My Review:
Christmas hit my Kindle before Halloween this year, which seems somewhat disturbing, but it is what it is. This is the fourth smirk-worthy book I have devoured by the wickedly talented wordsmith Zara Stoneley, and I adored every engaging word. I quickly succumbed to her magical word voodoo and fell headlong into this devilishly clever tale that was written from the first-person POV of Daisy, who was a bit of mess. I found myself reading slowly to savor each well-crafted scene and witty exchange. The storylines were engaging, heart-squeezing, deliriously funny, sweet, and a little sexy. It was perfection.
In addition to many hours of delightful entertainment, Ms. Stoneley provided me with two new additions to my Brit List with pomfret cakes – which are actually a candy, not a cake and are made with licorice and stamped with a castle, and sound absolutely vile to me; and sarky – which is British informal for sarcastic, and I can never have enough words for that ;)
It is never too early for Christmas! Zara Stoneley is quickly taking a place on my shelf of "must read" authors. That is why I jumped at the chance to read her latest book. This book was a delight to read and I must tell you even though it has the word Christmas in the title, this is a perfect feel good read for anytime of the year.
Daisy just found out she is losing her boyfriend, her dog (rest assured nothing happens to the dog) and her job. She just might lose her darn mind. What always cheers her up is the annual Christmas get together at Uncle Terrence's bookstore. One event that brings her family and friends together to share in the holiday cheer.
Yet every Christmas party year after year she has to endure hearing of Ollie Cartwright and how flipping perfect he is. Vera (Ollie's mom) and Daisy's mom are BFF's. Daisy is constantly having to hear how Ollie is a doctor and how geeky Ollie is so accomplished. Daisy admits to perhaps being a bit competitive and jealous of Ollie but she doesn't see what the buzz is all about. Until Ollie walks in the door after 13 years......whoa Ollie is hot!
I absolutely loved Daisy! She is witty and has a wicked sense of humor. This book had just the right amount of "rom" and just the right about of "com". I found it highly entertaining and endearing. I flew right through this in a mere day as I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to our quirky two main characters. Would they find love or would they find they just had too much history that would in the end push them apart?
The perfect Christmas book to kick off the holiday reading season. Precisely the right amount of Christmas cheer to start getting you in the spirit. this really is a book you could read anytime of the year, so you don’t feel crazy that you’re reading it in September. Zara Stoneley has written another fabulous book full of fantastic characters and the perfect blend of romance and humor. I smiled, I swooned, and at one point I laughed so hard tears were coming down my face.
Daisy has lost everything, her job, her boyfriend, and maybe even her dog. This was not the life that Daisy or her mother had planned for her, and it is made even worse when she is constantly compared to childhood friend Mr. perfect Oliver. Then Daisy finds a new job (not necessarily the job of her dreams but a job nonetheless) and finds herself sharing an apartment with Ollie. This was a fun will they? won’t they? story. Ollie and daisy are lifelong family friends with a complicated and competitive past. Even though they ”snogged” A couple times in the past, neither of them are willing to admit to any kind of attraction. Thank goodness uncle Terrence is around with his mistletoe magic. This book was just so much fun! I especially love the annual Christmas parties complete with ugly holiday sweaters. And best of all the parties took place in uncle Terrance’s bookshop. Terrence was a character that made any time of the year festive! Daisy end Ollie were great and I loved watching their relationship develop, although at times I was quite frustrated with the two of them! Daisy was a character that I’d love to be friends with, and girl I’d support you much more than you know who. I’d also love an invite to one of those Christmas parties! The secrets in the story were surprising and added an additional layer to all the mischief and magic. This is a story that will appeal to all romcom lovers, even if you are a book Scrooge and don’t enjoy Christmas Reads!

*** Big thanks to the publisher for my copy of this book ***
Utterly fabulous! There is no other word for this emotionally woven, splendid Christmas story. It is everything that we could hope for this Christmas and I can hardly wait for December now. Out of all the books I have read of her (and that is more than one in case you are wondering), this is probably her best. Ok, I am getting carried away. But really guys, this is not an exaggeration. Whether you like the festive season or not, you really MUST read this.
What could be the reasons? Well, here is some to tempt you.
1)We get to see four Christmas parties, each one outdoing the previous year. And this is not a random selection of four Christmas celebrations, we also get to see the events leading up to it.
2)A friends to lovers story. The chemistry between Daisy and Ollie is so palpable that we just want IT to happen. So obviously, the author makes us wait.
3)Uncle Terence is one of the memorable characters that I have met. A man who doesn't frown on the new generation, but who could have guessed that among all his frolics he kept such a secret? I am not saying that he is a role model (probably not), but all the same an unforgettable person.
4)Then there is his brother Charles, who you may not even notice that much. That's why I am noting him down. I don't think a person like him exists. He is a saint. Why? I guess you have to read and find out for yourself
5)Last but not least, this story won't disappoint you.
It has ticked almost all the columns of a Christmas romance for me, and I do hope you will enjoy it too curling up on your reading nook.
Four Christmases and a Secret is a cute, heartwarming read that takes you into the life of Daisy Dunkerly as she meanders through all sorts of highs and lows, from losing her boyfriend, enduring an unsatisfying career, fostering dogs with sweet personalities, surviving the annual Christmas parties, ugly sweaters and all, and reconnecting with a successful, handsome friend from the past.
The writing is sentimental and light. The characters are charismatic, unique, and endearing. And the plot is an engaging blend of heart, humour, family, friendship, nostalgic moments, attraction, chemistry, spirited shenanigans, awkward moments, tricky situations, painful secrets, and a little Christmas cheer.
Overall, Four Christmases and a Secret is another refreshing, enjoyable, emotive treat by Stoneley that reminds us that life is an adventure and mistletoe can sometimes be magical.
Thank you to Zara Stoneley and Rachel's Random Resources for providing me with a copy in an exchange for an honest review.
Oh My Gosh - I loved this book! Set over the time frame of four Christmases, this is more a love story than a holiday one as see the lives of Daisy and Ollie grow and change over four years. This is a funny, laugh out loud read, full of quirky characters who you either love or hate or love to hate! This is one of those books that you just want to see made into a movie because you know that the ensemble cast would be amazing! Put it on your holiday reading list and you will not regret it!
This novel will certainly get you in the mood for Christmas! Reminding me very much of ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’, I found myself smiling along to the typical characters you have come to expect in this style of fiction. There is nothing too new in this story, it isn’t surprising, but it does leave you wanting to dig out your own Christmas jumper and find the tree decorations!
With thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Since the start of November, I’ve been on a Christmas book spree. I’ve been slowly putting together a list of books to read during the holidays and this one was included. Now, while I enjoyed Daisy and Ollie’s story, this was NOT THE CHRISTMAS BOOK I was expecting. The story only has a few chapters with Christmas in it and because of this, I was really disappointed. The title of your story should give readers an idea of what to expect within the pages and this title is NOT fitting to the story. It’s not festive at all ☹️. Luckily, it wasn’t a total bust as I enjoyed reading about Daisy and watching her grow (there are even some emotional aspects to it that warmed my heart). However, I have to give FOUR CHRISTMASES AND A SECRET 3 stars because it wasn’t what I expected and there were a few things that bothered me about the story as a whole. You can see my specific likes and dislikes below.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞
❄ Daisy is a wonderful character and I enjoyed getting to know her throughout the book. She may not have it all together in the beginning (but who really does) but she steadily grew into the woman she had always wanted to be (with a little help from those closest to her) and it was nice to see.
❄ This book has a beautiful friends-to-lovers romance going on even though it took most of the book to get there. This is the norm in chick lit books though. Chick lit novels tend to be more about the heroine and her journey rather than the romance. I wasn’t expecting anything more than what we got.
❄ The secondary characters (especially Stanley the pooch) were fantastic additions to the story. I love when I connect with secondary characters and I had no problem doing that in this story.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞
❄ It’s not a CHRISTMAS BOOK like I was led to believe. This one shouldn’t be marketed in the holiday department because most of the book has NOTHING to do with Christmas. Yes, there are Christmas scenes but they are short and don’t really define what’s happening in the story (aside from uncle T and how he fits into the story- you’d have to read to know what I mean). I was really disappointed!
❄This book felt SO LONG. It says it’s only 300 pages but I’m telling you, it felt like I was reading a 600+ page book. Perhaps it’s because the story wasn’t what I thought it was that made it drag? I don’t know for sure, but it didn’t feel like a shorter book as it says!
𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗧 𝗨𝗣
FOUR CHRISTMASES AND A SECRET is a nice story with meaning, but it wasn’t the book I expected when I purchased a copy. Thankfully, I did enjoy Daisy and the rest of gang, but I was hoping for something more in terms of Christmas and the festivities involved in the holiday. If you’re specifically looking for a holiday read, I recommend trying another book because you’ll be disappointed in the lack of Christmas from this one.
I could so easily see this working on a big screen, its such a heartwarming story, and I didn't have more than half an inkling as to the big secret.
The story does indeed feature four Christmases , but yet I feel this could easily be read at any time of year, as not only do we feature Christmas, it also takes in the rest of the year too, and with the exception of the mega Christmas party each year, I didn't overly feel festive for the rest of the story.
I really enjoyed seeing how Daisy develops as a person over the course of the book. I loved the rivalry between her mum and Oliver's mum with their continual one up-manship. And Stanley is a lovely character too, and is instrumental in Daisy slowly growing in confidence.
Easily my favourite character was Uncle Terence, with his wonderful bookshop, ability to throw a marvellous party, all of his advice for Daisy, and well thinks I can't talk about, as they would be spoilers.
There are two potential love interests in this book for Daisy, the one who has been under her nose the time, and a new colleague who I really didn't take to.
Daisy although she doesn't realise it is just such a big hearted character, and loves book and animals, which makes her a fabulous person in my eyes. She always tries to help others, while putting herself down.
Although not my favourite book by the author, its still another excellent story and one worth reading (or maybe watching if my wish comes true and it gets turned into a film!).
A really enjoyable novel, with some great characters.
Thank you Netgalley and One More Chapter for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Daisy has just been dropped by her boyfriend. It’s almost Christmas and he’s shown his true colours by putting everyone before her. She is currently working at the local rag- or at least she is until she gets a text advising her that she has to reapply for her job as three papers are merging. The love of her life is Stanley the dog she is fostering and her Uncle who runs a bookshop.Uncle Terence holds a party every year and flashing jumpers are a pre- requisite. When she was younger she had a thing for Ollie. Ollie is now a successful doctor and at the party with his girlfriend and almost fiancee from what Daisy can tell. A book about life and its ups and downs with a smile along the way. I loved Stanley and almost cried at one point (I won;t give anything away). Although Christmas features in this, much is about other times of the year so is not really just a seasonal book. A main character who is in love with books- what’s not to like?!! When you fight it all the way but just have to follow your heart. A wonderful, feel good pick-me-up read with a dog you can;t help but love and a smile. I received a copy of this title via NetGalley. It does not impact my review.
When it comes to gearing up for the holidays, I don’t typically want to see anything Christmas-related until after Thanksgiving. However, I will always make an exception for two things: Hallmark Christmas movies and Christmas-themed books. Throw in that beautiful cover and I was all in for Four Christmases and a Secret.
This is one of those books where I don’t feel the synopsis does the story justice. It’s slightly misleading and doesn’t really explain about what the book really is. While there are definite Christmas and Romance themes, I really felt like this one fell more into the Women’s Fiction category. Daisy is quite a mess when we first meet her and a big part of the book is made up of her getting her act together. With a lot of encouragement and support from Uncle Terrence and Ollie, she gets her confidence back and figures out what she actually wants out of life. I did like her journey and found her a likable character. I also loved Ollie, Uncle Terrence, and Daisy’s mother. It seems to be a bit of a Stoneley signature for the main character to have a very loud, outspoken, quirky mother and she was on full display here. The only character I didn’t really like was Daisy’s best friend, Frankie, who I thought was awful right from the beginning.
I enjoyed the friendship and romance between Daisy and Ollie. I thought they fit really well together. I felt like a lot of their relationship was kind of glossed over, though. In one scene they’re having their first real kiss and then in the next they’ve been ‘together’ for awhile and we didn’t get to see any of that discussion or proper dates or anything like that. The first time they say they love each other is off page, as well. I didn’t really know how serious they were or where they were at in the relationship because there were jumps in time and a lot of the development happened between scenes. I thought this could have been handled a little better, but I still shipped them and was happy where they ended up.
Overall, I enjoyed Four Christmases and a Secret. I liked the characters and the romance and the journey of self-discovery Daisy went on. It ended up being a lot more serious than I thought it would be – more Women’s Fiction than Romance – but it still worked for me. It definitely put me in the mood for some good holiday themed movies and books. I look forward to checking out more from Stoneley in the future.
Okay, what is it with the books I’ve read of late? Do editors even exist anymore?
This book is at least 100 pages too long. I nearly threw it in the DNF pile several times because scenes and inner thoughts were being rehashed over and over. I’m afraid around the 75% I started to do the dreaded skim. Not a good sign. I’m not sure what this trend is with books. Do the publishers think the buying public want their money’s worth and therefore, every book must be over 350 pages long no matter what? I’ll take quality over quantity, thanks.
I’m pretty sure Stoneley started to add things she hadn’t originally planned due to the book’s length. For example, instead of one letter from the Uncle T character, we got about 10 in the end. My eyes glazed over with each.
Next, I had issues with the amount of cliches included. We have the heart of gold heroine who likes to dress in ‘quirky’ clothes and loves books, the embarrassing mother desperate for her daughter to get married, the hero who comes across as a ‘pompous prick’ but is truly lovely underneath it all, the bitchy friend, the rich sweet uncle who owns a bookstore… Not to mention that the heroine has job/career issues which involve sleeping with a co-worker and writes diary-like lists. Even the Christmas part of the book is the characters wearing ugly Christmas jumpers… When do these things stop being cliches and start being plagiarism?
The bookstore features from the beginning of the book but is only the focus towards the end. I love books set in bookstores and book about books but, on this occasion, it again felt like an unnecessary ‘must have in chick lit’ addition to pad the book. It actually became pretty laughable when the characters were coming up with ‘new original’ ideas for bookstores such as incorporating a coffee shop and having book club meetings.
My biggest issue though was the incorrect dialogue syntax throughout. There were several spelling and grammar errors and I could have perhaps coped with them, especially when I’ve received the book via Net-Galley and I assume these will be amended before publication. However, the amount of times Stoneley incorrectly capitalised and punctuated her dialogue was totally off putting and distracting and again, almost made me shuffle this into the DNF folder.
On the plus side, our heroine Daisy is quite funny. I laughed out loud quite a bit at her inner thoughts. To harp on, however, I just don’t think her life supported enough plot to sustain this book’s length. One major plot point was her sad backstory and, once revealed, it was a hugely underwhelming. The best conflict of the book involved her flatmate and that, weirdly, was resolved rather quickly.
Yay, I am back with another book by Zara and I think I have to say this one is my favourite out of the ones I have read! Why, well it is just so much fun, there is a dog called Stanley and even though you have a will they, won’t they scenario it was not forced down your throat. Instead, the situations and the secrets drive this book, the romance well it gave me the warm and fuzzy feelings. Also, it had me crying quite a bit too when I was not smiling like a loon!!! For me, this book has everything! Embarrassing and cringy parents who are fab, the unrequited love, the wrong love, the outrageous friends and a lot of laughter.
Daisy and Ollie have been friends for like ever! Their mums always compete who has the better child etc and they stayed clear of it, sharing a “forbidden” kiss one Christmas at Uncle T’s Christmas party in his bookshop (love this setting!). Never to see each other again for years and when they do fireworks thank you very much, but more in a sparkler kind of way not in a whizz-bang over and done with way.
With the story being told in segments of months and times worked wonderfully. You get given snippets to Daisy and her life at different stages, watching her grow more and more in the book into the woman that Uncle T always knew she would be.
Uncle Terrence isn’t her Uncle but Ollie’s, but he is like a fairy godfather to her, always a big part of her life and growth. I have to say when he was in the story I smiled. I would love someone like him in my life, just full of life! He loves life!
For me, the friendship between Daisy and Ollie is something truly amazing. All throughout the years, they were there for each other, bar a blip in the form of a secret until years later they meet again at Uncle T’s party. Their chemistry was great fun to watch with the banter, the adjustment to being friends as adults and the way Daisy would squirm and be awkward around him.
A big part in Four Christmases and a Secret were all the secrets. They played a huge part in their lives and some were bittersweet and some heartbreaking…all made me blinking cry.
I love Stoneley’s writing, she makes it so easy to read her novels. She draws you into their lives and her characters are so realistic that you could be reading your friends’ diary. Nothing superficial, just warm and fuzzy romance, making you believe everyone has a Prince Charming and to seize every opportunity you get. I could not put this book down nor did I want to. I wanted to keep reading for as long as I could and even hid away on Sunday afternoon to read this! I definitely think this is my favourite book from Stoneley, each book she writes gets better and better than the one before. I am a sucker for romance, it’s a nice change from the blood, guts and terror and she is my go-to for hearts and flowers.
Daisy has attended Uncle Terence’s Christmas parties for as long as she can remember. But this year, after losing both her boyfriend and her job, she’s especially looking forward to the distraction. Terence’s parties are legendary shindigs, filled with fun and family—and even better for book-obsessed Daisy, they’re hosted in his bookshop. Unfortunately, this year Ollie, son of her mother’s best friend, is also attending. Growing up, they had a rivalry for years, but now everyone seems to prattle on about how successful and accomplished he is. But after Daisy sees him for the first time in thirteen years, she just might understand what all the fuss is about.
Author Zara Stoneley just might be the master of simmering feelings. Daisy and Ollie might not have seen each other in years, but the second they’re reintroduced a spark is evident. Could it just be a friendship rekindling after a long break? Or is something deeper forming between them? As the two are wedged together with the help of some familial forces, it’s pure joy reading about them bounding through adventures and, eventually, reaching their own conclusions.
But beyond the potential romance rests the heart of the story: Daisy herself. Right at the beginning, she’s struggling with a major crisis of identity culminating in feeling lost and confused about the direction of her life. However, Stoneley expertly pushes the plot across four different Christmas seasons and the events leading up to them, and the result is a Daisy that has a long time to grow and evolve into herself. There are no quick solutions, and it’s incredibly engrossing to watch her naturally progress from unsure and somewhat insecure to going after what constitutes a happy ending for herself.
Helping her along the way is an outstanding cast of characters. With four Christmases to contend with, there are plenty of festive folks around headed by Uncle Terence. With sage advice doled out at just the right moment, he provides a hint of magic to the proceedings. And then there are a cadre of friends, family, and even a few unsavory lingerers that amp up just enough tension and drama to keep things bouncing along.
Ultimately, Four Christmases and a Secret delivers a rewarding romance that still manages an emotional punch.
Note: I received a free ARC of this book through NetGalley.
Heartwarming festive tale with themes of following your dreams, family ties and secrets. I enjoyed following the main protagonists journey to becoming a more confident woman , shedding a toxic friendship and an unhealthy relationship on the way. Had a few tears and smiles too whilst reading, enjoyable December read.
Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review <\i>
For lovers of Sophie Kinsella this is the perfect book. The second book this month for me during Christmas which had without any surprise, put me in the festive mood three whole months prior to it. Cute and easy read although sometimes I did feel the writing slightly disjointed but this does not mean I did not enjoy it because I most certainly did. As expected of a Christmas novel it had the perfect ending for the cute story with a slight undertone if sadness in the end which I did see coming far away from. The plot twist wasn’t exactly surprising but did give tint of sadness to the the HEA. Nonetheless a cute read to definitely leave a smile on your face.
With Christmas and secret together in the title, I couldn't resist the lure of the book. And the cover, it was so brilliant. My eyes were stuck to it. I had to force myself to turn the page and start reading.
This was Daisy's story over the 4 Christmases. A delightful character who was a bit of a ditz, to begin with, but slowly grew over the pages. Her parents were friends with Ollie's, her sometimes friend and most times competitor. Ah, the fun and innocence of childhood. They snogged too.. Under the mistletoe!!
Amidst all this, the core of the group was Uncle Terence and his infamous Christmas parties at his bookshop which all had to attend in their flashing bright jumpers and antler headbands. Food, drinks, conversation, the works...
Soon life happened. Ollie became a doctor, and Daisy was still deciding what she wanted to be. They met up thirteen years later in the Christmas party and continued being in touch. They moved from friends to strangers and back to friends. And then there was the earth-shaking secret which would be heartbreaking, but for whom?
My second book by author Zara Stoneley, I knew I was in for humor and fun and loads of emotions. Zara's writing brought the characters to life. I felt I knew them all as I continued reading. Daisy was a great wholesome character who was real, someone who was all heart and would do anything for her friends and family. Her love for books and having a sweet spot in the bookship made me smile. Don't we all have one?
I loved seeing her interaction with Uncle T; he had the greatest belief in her. All he ever wanted was for her to remain 'her' and live life to the fullest. Take a risk and seize the day!!
The author soon brought the book to a smooth finish with the secrets woven into the prose, big and small. Some brought a lump to my throat and I could barely read through the tears and others were pretty shocking.
My niggles too popped up and disappeared. Daisy's inner thoughts felt too long and slowed the prose initially but was okay later.
Overall, a fun read as I loved going on this journey with Daisy, seeing the world through her eyes and finding my inner confidence.
Although Christmas parties do feature in this story, it isn't really a festive romance as such. Daisy is the main character in the story and it is great to see how she grows and matures through the story which spans more than a decade. Uncle Terrence is an absolutely brilliant character - he isn't really her Uncle but he has always had that role in her life. He runs a bookstore and hosts a party every Christmas for family and friends there.
Daisy has mixed feelings about the party as Uncle Terrence always hosts amazing parties but she hates the competition between her Mum and that of her peer, Oliver Cartwright. The two women always seem to try to out do each other boasting about the achievements of their offspring. That was fine whilst they were in school but now Daisy feels she's a failure with no prospects whilst he's now a Doctor..... They haven't met for thirteen years and last time they were together they kissed under the mistletoe and it was dynamite! Now he's back, successful, a hunk and with a model girlfriend. They've gone from friends to rivals and now have a chance to be friends again but will fate intervene again?
This is a story of self discovery, learning to care for yourself and just be the best version of yourself you can. The journey involves betrayal, secrets, discoveries and love. There are plenty of surprises en route, especially in the form of letters revealing emotions and more from the past. It is a funny, moving and emotive read, a story of family, friendship, supporting each other and learning to love your own aspirations and achievements. This is a lovely heartwarming romance with some fantastic characters. I enjoyed reading it and have no hesitation in recommending it.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Zara Stoneley is an author who you can reliably sit down, open her books and get lost in. Easy to read, humorous and wrote almost like a Bridget Jones story. This is a Christmas romp set over a period of four Christmases and obviously has the Christmas jumpers, mistletoe and turkey until it’s coming out of your ears theme.
Daisy has lost her job, her foster dog and her boyfriend and is always being compared to her childhood friend who is the perfect Son according to her Mum and her best friend who squabble to outdo each other in the “who’s got the most successful child stakes”
Ollie and Daisy are friends from infants and have slightly amusing competitive pasts. A couple of times over the years they have kissed and you sense from the off that some attraction lingers.
Ollie and Daisy both have a Uncle T who is their rock and although isn’t Daisy’s real uncle he treats her like a godfather figure always looking out for her. He owns a fantastic quirky book store and has annual Christmas parties and things start to change when Oliver sneaks a kiss under the - you guessed it mistletoe. Yet Uncle T holds a huge secret and the plot is heartwarming and sentimental.
Over a span of Christmases Daisy finds herself a new job and finds herself sharing an apartment with Ollie. Even Stanley the dog is rescued and comes back to live with them. She’s got a great personality, sense of humor and this is a feel good book you will fly through to see if their past history will push them together or apart.
Stoneley draws you in and her characters are British rom-com at their best. She admits at the back of her book that she likes to write about friendships, dreams and love. Isn’t that what life should be about?
Four stars from me. Thank you Net galley and One More Chapter for the ARC
Four Christmases in one Zara Stoneley novel? Could it get any better?
Actually yes it could, because in Four Christmases and a Secret Zara Stoneley also serves up a cast who are quirky, characterful and fabulously well drawn. She also filled my head with pictures of fabulous festive settings and wonderfully described detail. Not only was there lashings of Christmas to enjoy, but thanks to a certain dog called Stanley, there was also cuteness by the snow-shovel-load. This lovely story is like a film – it drew me in and wrapped me up.
It should really come with a warning because this book is impossible to put it down. As I raced through the chapters I lost count of the LOL moments. But alongside the sparkle and hilarity and the cosy feeling of spending time with friends, there was also a wonderful depth, and poignant moments that had me reaching for my tissues.
These highs and lows make for a fabulous journey that delighted me all the way to the happy ending Daisy deserves. And in pages packed with friends, parties, a secret and as many laughs as you could wish for, Stoneley has delivered a story that shows us, a book is for life, not just for Christmas – this is one I'll re-read and enjoy all over again, all year round
Zara Stoneley writes charmingly British romantic comedies that are very much in the vein of Bridget Jones, and Four Christmases and a Secret fits perfectly into that niche. We meet Daisy Dunkerly, our heroine, at a Christmas party when she’s still in her teens, about to sit her A-levels, with a bright future ahead.
Fast-forward 13 years to the same relative’s annual Christmas Eve bash and Daisy is somehow completely failing out of life, with a dead-end job, a tiny room in a friend’s flat, and a boyfriend who’s just dumped her. She’s no longer in the same league as childhood friend Ollie, a successful surgeon, and feels like an even more massive failure as the inevitable comparisons are made. When you bring a rescue dog as your date to a party, things are looking pretty dire.
This is a romantic comedy, though, with a guaranteed happy ending, and we do get to see Daisy muddle her way through to find her happiness at last, though not without a lot of angst and a few false starts along the way.
I do need to put in trigger warnings for past miscarriage and death of a major character, someone who is a significant presence in Daisy’s life and throughout the book. I was pretty devastated at this particular death, so be warned if that’s something which might set you off.
Five stars for a poignant, charmingly British rom-com.
Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this book via NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources.
I read this for the Popsugar 2020 Challenge category "a book with a great first line". The great first line was 'I flung open the curtains and shouted look at my hedgehogs!' Actually this had nothing much to do with the book, but it was a great opener. The book was a sweet rom-com but with lots of family dynamics and includes animals, book shops, a hidden romance in the older generation, and a late bloomer finally finding her niche, along with a reunion with a long time friend turned lover.
A fun, light hearted, frothy romance. Captivating and enjoyable throughout. I really enjoyed the whole book from start to finish. It has tastes of Bridget Jones with an over bearing Mother and Christmas jumpers but it really is it’s own tale and not just for Christmas. Highly recommended.
Daisy has just lost her boyfriend, her job and probably her dog. The only thing keeping her sane is the annual Christmas party at Uncle Terrence's bookstore. She loves these parties, they bring all her favourite people together, and they are in her favourite place, bookstore. However, every single Christmas party, she has to endure hearing of Oliver Cartwright - they grew up together and were best friends for ever, but now they are not as they went their separate ways after Ollie went to university and became a doctor and Daisy... well, Daisy's dreams of being a vet have never came true. Her mum and Oliver's mum are best friends but they both love to boast about their children, and Ollie, well, Ollie wins at life, right? But then, after 13 long years, Oliver also comes to the party and oh boy, he's hot! And lovely, and friendly and soon Daisy finds herself sharing an apartment with him...
As usual, the book is full of brilliant, sharp and witty banter between the characters, especially between Daisy and Oli. I loved their dialogues, they made me smile so often, and it always makes reading so much nicer and lighter. There is a lot of character development in the story but I think that the biggest self - discovery journey was Daisy's one, she for sure was a totally different person at the end, a person that I liked much more than at the beginning - as I only had a teeny, tiny problem with Daisy, to be honest, as I had a feeling that the author has tried too much with her - to make her too funny, too dramatic, too lost, and this altogether has made her simply too overdone. I liked her, oh my word, I really liked her but because of all these "too" I couldn't warm to her completely. Also, I am not a biggest fan of creating holly characters, characters who could do no wrong, who are always right and full of wisdom, and so the whole subplot with Uncle Terence, instead of making me weak at the knees, made me roll my eyes a bit.
The read was so engaging that I honestly haven't spotted the three Christmases. Oops. The writing style so sentimental and light and chatty that I haven't noticed time is passing by. The author has so easily drawn me into her characters' lives and worlds that I really didn't want to leave. Altogether, it was a fun, witty and heart - warming rom - com, filled with quirky characters, some secrets, embarrassing situations, just what you could expect from this kind of book and from this author. However, it is not only a light - hearted, not too demanding read, it's full of deeper and more serious moments, and I loved this perfect mix of fun and poignant. It was the perfect Christmas story to start getting you in the festive spirit. Let's be honest, Zara Stoneley has did it again, she delivered another brilliant read full of great characters, the perfect blend of will they/won't they, filling the book with a self discovery journey full of secrets, discoveries, friendship, love and stealing dogs. Truly recommended!

Thank you netgalley and the publishers for this book. I wanted to read it since I saw the beautiful cover and also the blurb. It sounded just like something I would love reading and I was right! I couldn't put it down. I read it in 3 hours since I got it. And I loved this story. Its my first Zara Stoneley book and its not going to be my last. I just can't get over this cute story. Had me smiling the whole time I read it and just reminded me a lot of Bridget Jones and who doesn't love that! Gah it was so good and I can't praise it enough. A classic reluctant love story with awesome characters, great banter, christmas background, adorable romance. The story of childhood frenemies Oliver(ollie) and Daisy. Since their mother were besties so these two practically grew up with eachother. The last christmas while they turned 18, these two shared a kiss under the mistletoe at Uncle T's party but unfortunately they went to different uni and did not get a chance to be close to one another. But almost after 13 years, they met again. Ollie, now a doctor ,successful , hansome and daisy turned out to be exactly the opposite. The events that happened could mark this book in a strictly woman's fiction catagory or chicklit but Ollie and Daisy's slow burn romance, their interaction, the way they became friends again reminded me so much of 'Bridget Jones's diary' and I completely fell in love with it,hands down. Oliie has been an wonderful friend to our beautiful daisy. Their chemistry and friendship made this book special for me. And lets not forget the unrequited love story of uncle Terrace. I cried like a baby towards the end. The man loved deeply, not only that he had been a father and champion to Daisy when the poor girl needed him to be. Daisy's friendship with Frankie depects most of what consists of today's friendship. I like to babble more about this book. I loved it since I saw the cover and I am exceptionally grateful to netgalley for this ARC. If you want to know if Ollie and Frankie got their happily ever after then you have to wait for its release on 27 th september,2019. Well the title says it all. This book spans over christmas seasons,a funeral and celebration of love and friendship. It was my first Zara Stonely book but not the last! A perfect romcom and I couldn't praise it enough. A great and entertaing read. Will recommend it to all romcom lovers! Happy reading ....xoxo✌❤
I was chuffed to be asked to read and review Zara's new book, as you all know I am a huge fan of her stories and this one is another corker! A story that includes festive jumpers celebrating Christmas Eve at a party in a bookshop has my vote! But don't fear if you think festive books are out too early, this story takes us through all the seasons as well as covering four Christmases so no bah humbugging just yet!
I really warmed to the main character Daisy straight away. A fun, caring and like a lot of us a little insecure in where life is leading. With an interfering mother who means well but can be suffocating Daisy lacks that confidence which I am pleased to report builds throughout the story, such a joy to witness.
How can Daisy not feel in direct competition with Oliver's name being thrown around. Oliver, a boy from Daisy's childhood and son of her mum's friend. Being told how amazing Ollie is can be downright annoying but Daisy decides enough and is determined to shine brighter. You can't beat a pushy mother in a book (especially when there not yours) but luckily Zara gave us two! The rivalry between the two mums was cringing but oh so fun to read.
My favourite character though has to be Uncle Terence who owns the book shop where all the magnificent Christmas Eve parties take place year after year. I liked the relationship between him and Daisy, he is a true gentleman, a confident throughout giving her that little encouragement to dream big and to not give up.
Romance... It's not a festive read without a little romance, after all Daisy deserves a little love in her life. Although I have to admit I wasn't too keen on one of her love interests, I took an instant dislike!
With a perfect ending to such a heart-warming story, This gave me all the warm fuzzy feelings right until the very end and made me want to play Michael Buble Christmas on repeat.. too early? NEVER! I would love love to see this on the big screen! A mix between Bridget Jones and Love Actually. I would be first in line!
Oh and not forgetting the secret... well that would be telling and I shall leave that for you to find out. But I had no clue all the way through, didn't stop me guessing though!
Another fabulous book from Zara that you all should read anytime of the year. Huge thanks to Zara Stoneley, Rachel Random Resources and Netgalley for the ARC which I have reviewed honestly and for inviting me along on this fab Blog Tour!
I have to admit that my favourite parts of the Bridget Jones films are those set at Christmas when the terrible Christmas jumpers come out and everyone is eating turkey curry! So I was excited to find out that Zara Stoneley was setting her next book around, not just one Christmas but FOUR different Christmases! Poor old Daisy has to attended Uncle Terence’s spectacular Christmas parties every year, with her appropriately festive attire, and listen to how fantastic life is going for her old schoolfriend Ollie. But Daisy’s life isn’t going quite so well especially on the work and romance front although Uncle T has something up his sleeve that may be about to change things in a very unexpected way!
This is a super cute romcom that didn’t feel overly festive like some Christmas books as things happened during the year leading up to the party at Uncle Terence’s bookshop again. So don’t feel you have to read it in the snow, eating Christmas cake, listening to carols and drinking mulled wine! Although you will certainly feel in the Christmas spirit if you do!! Daisy was a lovely character with two potential love interests, one much more likeable for me than the other so I was rooting for Daisy to see sense and end up living a “happily ever after” approved of by me!! I felt a real kinship with Daisy. She’s a book loving journalist who didn’t do as well in her A levels as expected so is in a job that she enjoys but that wasn’t on her longterm plan. Her love of animals means that she is a perfect choice to foster and when a certain dog comes into her life it looks like she has more than enough love to spread around. But there’s a secret hanging around and it’s one that I certainly didn’t see coming!
This would make a fabulous Christmas tv movie as I found it very easy to visualise characters and settings throughout due to the descriptive and engaging narrative. Whilst I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as The Holiday Swap, it is still a funny and enchanting storyline with an endearing heroine.
This is a fantastic holiday book, although it is much more than a Christmas romance, I did wish that I was cozied up in front of a fire with a warm drink as I read this book!
A very charming story about a wonderful woman who has really let life pass her by due to an event when she was a teenager that altered the course of her life. Now many years later, it seems that just as life was continuing to plod along, decisions need to be made and that also means making peace with the past, and the secret that she’s so long held onto!
I’m so thankful that Daisy’s past included the very charming and gorgeous Oliver. He was truly a delight and a joy, I loved his care and belief in who Daisy was, even though it has been years since he has seen her, he was her steady rock. Who he was, showed the true character of her crappy friend Frankie, and Tim (yuck), and they just made Oliver shine even more!
This story delved deep into the things that make us who we are, the people who love us and the family who are there for us no matter what! I loved that it took place over a couple of years, so that we got to see such great progression between Daisy and Oliver, and the growth in Daisy herself, as she realizes that maybe buried inside her is the teenager who aimed for the stars and it’s time to let her loose again!
No review would be complete without mentioning the fabulous Uncle Terrance, he was the glue that held everyone together! And the hopeless romantic that gave a little shove to Oliver and Daisy when they needed it. I want an uncle like him!
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
