The Mate Index #3

The Vori's Mate

Rate this book
Reggie was a society girl, a castoff wife, soon to-be divorcee, stolen away from Earth, a victim of her own bad choices. Little did she know that one mistake would lead her onto a journey of finding her own happy ever after with a serpentine species of aliens on a strange matriarchal jungle planet. Giant spiders, gargantuan lizards, scrambled green eggs for breakfast. Life had suddenly got a lot more interesting.

Vadal and Shaagra are from a society where the females choose and dominate, where due to a genetic malady they succumbed to fits of temper and collected males into vast harems. Vadal and Shaagra want more than that. When the opportunity comes to secure a human mate to love and shelter among them, they will risk everything, even their hearts, in hopes that she will be forever theirs.

Warning: this book contains some slight M/M interaction in their bonding with Reggie.

Pre-read (5/14/2022): Book #15 of my DNF or unhaul series pile for 2022. I kinda stopped logging them in the moment so… sorry but I will be adding notes about the numbers when I write the reviews for them.

Review (6/3/22): 5 books in and I assume y’all know the premise. So I am not gonna focus on the general mechanics of humans and our contact with alien worlds including the Mate Index. This is a reverse harem so if that isn’t your preference feel free to skip around the series, some of the books focus on monogamous couples and others on harems.
The series follows different alien species in contact with humans. Here the dudes are of the Vora, they are snake-like, maybe even Naga-like aliens. (So if you cannot handle that I skipped this book but as I loved Susan Trombley’s The Serpent's Mate, I found this variation of alien not to be too intimidating). There is some discussion of their mating habits including their tails but youre reading an alien romance you should expect it.

Into the characters:
Reggie the human woman was nice. I liked her and didn’t have any issues with her characterization, often in Alien romance, I’m not a fan of the heroine as a result of their ethnocentrism or they just lack any backbone. Reggie was considerate of others and tried to understand / adapt to the new cultural environment.
Her interactions with Walooth were well written but realistic to our world’s understanding of
Vadel and Shaagra the original duo who knew they were going to be partners with a mutual mate. Vadel is a doctor and helps rescue her from her kidnappers. Which will cause later drama. Shaagra adores her and is very protective. In the bedroom, against Vora tradition Shaagra prefers to play a more dominant role than is “appropriate”.

Overall this was pretty good and I will be continuing in the series as I want to get caught up with all my series. Luckily this series seems to have stopped expanding after Book 9 so I should be fully caught up within the year.

This is the series that keeps on giving and I’m loving just how different each story is. Reggie who we briefly met previously down on the docks with Destiny finds herself kidnapped and whisked off into space. When her kidnapper stops briefly at a spaceport for inoculations and a translator for his captive she finds herself being rescued by an alien we have also met previously Doctor Vadel of the Vora species.

The Vora are a snake type alien very gorgon like and I loved just how different these males were in both customs and appearance. Reggie finds herself agreeing to accompany Vadel back to his nest where she’s in for a shock as there’s also an additional nestmate Shaagra and she’s expected to become mates to both of them.

I loved how sweet and protective Vadel and Shaagra were towards their new mate and their culture I found so fascinating it's very much a matriarchal one which I loved. Both nestmates can totally be themselves with Reggie Shaagra especially is able to overcome so much with the love of his mate but when the past comes back to haunt them they find themselves trekking through the jungle to Vadel’s family for assistance in protecting their mate from outside threats.

We also later get introduced to Walooth who desperately craves a family and a place to fit in and after an act of heroism, Reggie welcomes him into her nest. I wasn’t too sure about his inclusion initially but he actually slotted in nicely and I couldn’t help but like and feel for him. This really was a great addition to the series as a whole and i definitely recommend it.

I'm still loving this series. I remembered Dr. Vadal from book 1 and now he finally gets a mate. To Reggie's surprise, Vadal is not alone...he comes with a sexy nest mate Shaagra. Loved their close relationship but wanted a stronger M/M interaction.
It was nice to learn about a new world and the best part is when

I’m so glad I gave this book a second chance cuz it was worth it! The first part of the book dragged a bit, but it picked up and had some nice surprises. Reggie was wearing a mask of self-confidence that shielded a damaged soul and couldn’t hide that part of her from Vadal and Shaalor because their noses could pick it up. She was a soft place for them to land while they were supportive and protective of her. I enjoyed the culture on Vora and the very specific issues they ran into in their polycule as a result of cultural differences. It was a good read.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: kidnapping, violence, gore, murder, captivity, animal death (hunting), cheating (past relationship), divorce, threatened SA, animal attack, family estrangement, mentions of attempted SA of MMC, mentions of alcoholism, pregnancy, birth

I really liked this book, so much so I recently purchased the audiobook. The story was still good, but the narrator's voice for the female had me at first shocked (because it was SO bad) and then fighting hilarity every time I heard it from that point on. Imagine a guy making the most obnoxious female voice he can and you will have only the beginning idea of this narration.

2.75 stars. Great idea. Decent world set up. Compelling customs and world amongst the Vori. Characterization is somewhat two-dimensional and the buildup of relationship is nonexistent. Transitions are abrupt. This author is so hit or miss to me. Some books are great and others feel completely rushed and not thought out well.

Wonderful story!!

I usually don't care about grammar as long as I can get the gist of the story. Unfortunately the first few books were atrocious and kept throwing me out of the story. But I pushed on. So you grammar Nazis should probably avoid this series. But you will be missing out on an awesome set of books. It does get better as the series progresses but really by now the author needs to fire the the editor and get a new one. For myself, I will follow this author and watch for new books. I loved this series and will definitely anticipate the next one.

Book five in this series.

Telling the story of Reggie, who we met in book 3!

This book was fantastic. Branching out further in to the alien world of the Vori. Naga/ lamia/gorgon type aliens who breed/nest in pairs. I loved the cultural differences and the world building that filled this book ( and the series as a whole )
The wonderful development of relationship between reggie and her males was fantastically done.
As always... looking forward to more.

This book was so much fun to read!

Reggie was a soon to be divorced woman that her parents weren't to happy with so she decided to go out and find herself a hot alien and get naughty but instead she found a weirdo who stole her from earth , drugged her and then woke her and then whipped and checked her afterwards. He had the nerve to take her to get vaccines and that's where she meets Dr. Nadal her future mate. That's all I will say because reading this book is so worth knowing what happens next and you won't regret it. I found this book to be fun to read just imagining the homes and the jungle and all the weirdness that came along with this story. Loved it.

Interesting take on Nagas.

Sum: Reggie, who was looking for a bit of a random alien hookup, after being cast aside from her (long-time) cheating husband, what else should a over 30 divorcee do? Unfortunately, the alien she meets to hook up with, turns out to be a species that kidnaps their breeders. Luckily for Reggie, this alien needs her to have a translator, since he stole her instead of getting her through the Mate Index, and takes her to the medical ward on an alien world as a pit stop. There she gets to meet and be protected by make naga, Vadal, as a doctor and protective of females naturally, he cannot stand to see the state Reggie has been put in from her capture. After scenting her though? He figures he and his nest brother, Shaagra, can skip the Mate Index and spend their lives with delicious Reggie. She seems pretty keen as well. Along the way, need for another male comes in to play, and their third, Walooth shows up to help.

A reverse harem, mid-length, slightly confusing sexual positions, but otherwise steamy and sweet read.

The M/M is so slight, you almost miss it, so don’t let that stop you!

I’ve read two other Mate Index of this series and they were okay, but all have their problems. I probably won’t read another one, unless it’s Vadal’s brothers book. Just cause I liked his character so much, and the epilogue…….

Overall? 3.8
Plot? 3.5
Spice? 4
Cheating? No
CharDev? 5 for Shaagra
HEA? Yes
Fave Char? Walooth
Series? Yes, but stand-alone
Tropes? alien, reverse harem, naga
Triggers? None

horrible female narration

This story by it self is strong and full of all the turn about that any good reverse harem should have.

The narration of the female was so so annoying and off putting I couldn’t enjoy the book.
I enjoy the audibles when I can so I can get a feel and debt a bit better for each character. When it’s done right the book can become amazing. For this book, I feel that it made it horrible to listen to.
The male narration was good, not great but good, and fit the characters well I believe.

Mmmm....just so so .

I'll admit that I had to make myself read the whole novel . Snake men ? Just couldn't go there. I kind of was creeped/grossed out by the thought of sexual acts between them and a human female . I've got no issue with snakes it's just that I couldn't wrap my head around the whole snake alien thing . Other than that , I found the story to be sweet and endearing .

Let me just say that I was SO GLAD when they allowed Walooth into their nest. I have read many books where they just leave the guy for the next book in the series... this was very satisfying.

Bland and predictable are the first words that come to mind when I think of how to describe this book. It doesn't do anything new or creative in the sci-fi romance genre. But it also doesn't do anything awful so it gets a pass as a mediocre book that isn't worth reading.

This is my first book in The Mate Index series (even though I have read several of S.J. Sanders' other books) but it was easy to follow without reading the previous books. The world building isn't complex so I never felt lost.

I asked my friends for something fun and creative to read and one of my friends recommended this book. After reading this book, I'm rethinking our friendship.

📌 Grammar is optional here. The technical writing was so awful at times. Fire the editor because they're not doing their job. I don't want to read someone's unedited manuscript, which is technically what I'm reading whenever I read a self-published book that hasn't been edited. This problem is especially bad sometimes in sci-fi romances where the editing is often nonexistent or sloppy. I was literally fixing sentences in my brain while reading. I'm petty enough to subtract one star for the awful writing because it did impact my reading experience.

📌 Reggie was f--king bland and boring. Bitter rich girl got tossed aside by her husband for a younger partner. Her whole background story is that she had an unhappy marriage and her plan for an alien hook-up went bad. What a boring clichéd character. I've read at least thirty other romance books with this same character and they were done better. What was her character arc? Did this girl even have a personality?

📌 Vadal, Shaagra, and were sweet but also boring love interests. If you've read a few MMFM and MMMF romances, you'll get the group dynamics real fast. There was nothing interesting about any of the characters because they all had flat character arcs. Their personalities can also all be summed up as soft cinnamon rolls for Reggie. S.J. Sanders has done soft love interests before but they were more interesting. In this book? Nothing interesting. There was zero thought put into these characters.

📌 The romance is 100% insta-love. The love interests feel instant attraction to Reggie and then start declaring their love and everlasting devotion in the next second. Reggie is less quick to declare her feelings but there was no difference in how she felt instant attraction and feelings for the love interests. I guess I'm asking too much when I want the characters to work a little for their relationships.

📌 Low-drama and low-conflict. I get that this is a popular trope right now for some readers (because of the global pandemic) but I like intense emotions in my romances. As dumb and cliché as this sounds, I want to feel something when I read a romance. This was the definition of... pleasant. It was neat and tidy and nothing emotional happened. Like a walk in a park.

📌 The plot was an afterthought. It was so simple and blah. There was no creativity. This is the standard the evil space aliens want the human for their "mate" so her good guy space alien love interests have to protect her blah blah blah. Sci-fi is such a creative genre. There is so much that could be done when almost anything is possible. What a waste of potential interesting world building to have the most generic plot.

📌 One example of how this book took being predictable as a rule.

📌 The book could have ended after the

I have enjoyed a few previous books by S.J. Sanders so I consider this as a one-off. Every author has a few blah books once in a while. I'll read more from Sanders but I think I will stick to newer books because some of these books in Sanders' backlist are not quality.

I enjoyed the story and loved the characters!
Reggie was the slutty friend of Destiny that we've met in book 3 of the series. She an her husband had an open relationship, because he didn't want to stop sleeping around after they've got married, so Reggie threw herself into plenty of flings to forget about the disappointment her marriage was. When the asshole found himself a younger model, he served Reggie divorce papers and she thought about the Mate Index and all the alien males that were looking for someone to love and cherish for the rest of their lives. Wanting to see if she even was attracted to the aliens, she went to the space dock. Sadly the first alien she encountered was a satyr-looking Kampi, who was looking for a female to add to his father's royal harem. Reggie was lucky that the young royal brought her to the space station for vaccinations and a translator, the idiot didn't think that her bloodied face and the fact that he had her on a leash would raise alarm of the security and medical staff on the station.
Doctor Vadal didn't expect his last day on the station to be that shocking. He was happy to be going back to Vora and his nestbrother Shaagra. They were planning on looking for a human mate on the Mate Index as soon as Vadal got home, but a small, terrified human female in his office changed everything. Even though the Vori didn't have fated mates or anything of the sort, after Vadal smelled and saw Reggie he knew that he wanted her to be his mate. So he illegally took her home with him. Meeting Shaagra was a big surprise for Reggie, she thought she found herself a scarily beautiful and gentle potential mate, but then she learned that there were two males to mate with ;)
Shaagra was an unusually dominant male, his kind didn't look kindly at males that weren't submissive to the females, but he was caring, sweet and loving, just like Vadal was, Shaagra just liked to be on top ;)
I liked how in the thick of the conflict both males turned brutal and bloodthirsty to protect their mate. The bravery of Vadal's childhood friend Walooth was heartwarming. Walooth was a smaller, more slender male, he was sweet and submissive, and it was very clear that he was a little gay for Vadal and had a crush on him since they were children. Vadal liked Walooth, but he never felt the pull to form a nest with him and share a female between the two of them. Yet when the danger came for Vadal and his nest, the delicate Walooth risked his life for them. I loved that they cared for him when he was wounded, invited him to be a part of their family and over time grew closer to the sweetheart.
I liked the weird, rebellious brother of Vadal and will gladly read his story, but what the hell was a human woman doing in the middle of the jungle far away from the cities with space ports? ;)

I was reluctant to read this since I don't like snake-like things. Although the Vori aren't snakes, they do have coils and scales along with some other, non-snakelike features. This is a new world and introduces several creatures. I immersed myself into this fascinating world and was held captive by the culture found there. Reggie was a strong female who had been kidnapped from Earth. She fights back to keep from having to go with the cruel creature that had her and instead manages to be just where she needs to be. Dr. Vadal was a caring doctor who has just finished studying different species. He is a researcher along with being a healer. Shaagra was Vadal's nest mate. He has emotional and physical damage, and was large and fierce. Walooth was a quiet, soft spoken man who was a friend of Vadal's as they were growing up and had wanted to be Vadal's nest mate. He was smaller than the other two but is definitely a sweetheart. I liked each of the characters for different reasons and I felt the author wrote them so well you really had a sense of who they were. There was a lot to overcome, some intense moments and some happy ones. I can't wait for the next book.

Great plot but in serious need of editing

I loved this story, lots of "aww" moments and several chuckles, but the fact that this book is in dire need of re-editing was off-putting. The story is built perfectly and the character development is great, as usual from this author. What I didn't expect were the spelling mistakes, missing or too many words and awkward sentence structure that kept on interrupting the reading flow, making me stop and mentally correct the mistake from start to finish. I've read so many of her books and really enjoyed most of them, so the severe lack of editing in this one really surprised me. That's usually not her style.
Story wise I'd love to give the book five stars, but the mistakes triggered my typo OCD to the point that I was tempted to not finish it. So it's four stars from me, instead.
It's as if the author used the dictation function instead of typing or went back to change a scene and only briefly checked it afterwards in orderto stick to the publishing deadline.... no time to edit it properly.

I do appreciate the author of this series basically creating a whole new planet, culture, and alien species practices with each of these books. Although after a while it can get confusing since the aliens reference different alien's traits, behaviors, and cultures. Eventually it sticks but it also helps that the author gives the reader distinctive characteristics to each alien species.

I really liked the premise of the book and the dynamic between the initial 2 nestmates and Reggie. Although the surpise 3rd guy threw me for a loop and honestly, YES BITCH GET ITTTTTT. like why not atp right lol

When I read Destiny's story, I thought Reggie was a PITA but reading her story it made me like her and of course there is always the deep dark secrets she is hiding.

I liked the conflict throughout the story and now that I know more context about this specific species, I will go back and re-read the other Vori Mate Index smut that was semi-related to this series.

Overall, a fun read and would be tempted to pick up a physical copy eventually.

3.8/5

Much better than the others in the series. The FMC is not TSTL or insufferable and her motivations made sense. I loved them adding a 3rd male mate to the nest half way through and how she struggled with the new dynamic and when to sexually accept him. I also liked that all the males had their own distinct personalities and I didn’t get them mixed up.
The culture clash was interesting and I liked that the doctor mate fixed the fertility and aggression issues in the females of their species. The teaser for his deviant brother (who doesn’t want another male and wants to be enough for his mate -GASP-) finds a female in distress, sounds good.

Alien. Monster (huge snakes). MMMF. Breeding. All males are virgins. No Virgin FMC. Anal. DP. Alien peen. Double peens. Mating bite that’s orgasmic and caused ovulation. DVP. Dominant male and a submissive smaller male. Pregnancy. Live birth (3 females and 1 male). Second pregnancy with 2 eggs in epilogue.

A cool and different alien love story I didn't think I'd be able to get behind a story that involved aliens that were snake-like, but I'm moving past my prejudice, lol. I loved how brave Reggie is, like she is totally fearless and strong. The story started with her being heartbroken over her husband's betrayal, then she takes a wrong step that eventually leads her to her snake dudes. There are lots of action scenes and the mating parts are hot, I am still trying to get over the whole giant spiders that taste like crab, I don't think I'll ever look at seafood the same way again. These aliens are obviously alien enough to be strange, but human enough to be attractive.

Love it!!

I love this series so much, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I read them all straight through. I can't pick which I liked better even the short stories where a joy. But yeah you got to love the male Vories, they are so cute with their interactions, and posturing. And I would love to hug Walooth. I was so excited to know that the doctor from the very first book got to spin his tale. When Vadal told his brief history my heart went out to him in the VaDorok story. This is what I would happily call a feel good read. Plus I look forward to seeing Eyuul's story told.

Since I am starting book six

It is about time I sent in a review. I have really enjoyed this series I guess that's apparent from the fact I have already read five of the series. I like the plots and outcomes of the books with the exception of the first where human women were bundled off to be raped repeatedly and have it called mating. Yup, the frog guys need to be removed from the galactic gene pool. In a literary way it makes since that a few galactic species would be ... Anal Orifices. Yes and we all know what I mean by that. Book five shows that more than one SO species. I kind of want the galactic council would be put recharge of the mating thing.

Good Read

Loved the new story. My only question was "Why didn't Earth have more involvement in this book?" Earth is so worked up about getting money for the mate index, but they didn't care about her getting taken? Maybe she wasn't reported as kidnapped because her family doesn't love her? I wish that was made more clear. It started out like there may be a confrontation based on the first few chapters, but then it was the race that originally abducted her that a threat. I was baffled by that, but otherwise, there was a decent plot and a wholesome romance. I really enjoyed the fact they weren't in Insta love, though a lot was skimmed over.

This book reads more like a fantasy novel set in an alternate Earth-esque place, rather than an alien world - which is fine with me! The characters are all well developed (with only a few little notes that make you go 'hmm?' because the points are never truly fleshed out), the story touches on the alien planet, culture, customs and aspects of faith and ritual. The is a camaraderie among the males that is sweet and rather touching. Yes, there is sex (I mean, that's sort of why we are here, no?) and it handled very well, offering more to the story and the characters than just something racy to read.

There are some editing misses - and I did need to re-read a sentence or two to make sure I understood correctly. That is the reason for my missing star. I am keen to read Vori's Secret - Can't wait to learn more about the Vori home world.

As usual, the only real flaw of this series is the editing. I love the characters and story and wish the writing wasn't as rushed because there are some very good ideas and the fact the author wanted to toy with many interesting concepts is obvious and enjoyable.

I'd been expecting Vori's story since he was first mentioned in the first book of the series and it didn't disappoint.

OMG Loved IT

This was the best book yet. I loved Reggie and her mates. Each so different that the other, but some way they all worked so well together on each level. They all loved and respected each other, and have not only Reggie, but each male what they needed. And then the babies was just icing on the Vori cake. I can't wait for the next book. This is the book that everyone needs to get; you won't be disappointed at all.

Good story

So, this is a 3.5 star book, but my main critique is that it’s book 5 in the series and the editing hasn’t improved. I personally really like these stories. In this book, I loved the exploration of trauma that hadn’t happened in previous books (although I didn’t read book 4). So, yes. I’m quite enjoying this series, though I wouldn’t mind having a go at any upcoming books just to give it a good edit XD.
