Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft and grew up in Manchester and Chicago. He has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, "The Art of Falling Apart" and "Subpoena Colada" have been published in multiple languages.

He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. "The Imposter" traces the journey of a criminal family (think The Sopranos in austerity London and you'd be on the right track).

The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.

Mark lives in Wiltshire with his family.

This is the second Mark Dawson's book for me. The first one The Cleaner didn't impress me at all. With Tempest it is a different story. I am not the biggest fan of spy thrillers but this one is for sure worth reading. It is the 4th book in the series, but you can read it as a stand-alone too.

What was interesting for me in this book is the involvement of the main characters in Triad's activity in Hong Kong and the events in Cuba. Both of these locations are not so much described in novels.

Beatrix Rose is a freelancer assassin who worked for Triad, the CIA and MI6. Her husband was killed and her daughter was abducted. Her last order to kill a Triad boss failed. She is depressed and only the decision to help her friend Danny saves her from the fate of a drug addict.

In other words, if you are looking for a good spy story in Hong Kong and Cuba, try Tempest and you are not going to regret it.

Firstly, I should mention Mark Dawson is one of my favourite action thriller authors.

Believe it or not I have not started John Milton books, I have concentrated on Beatrix Rose and Isabella Rose. But I never thought I would be reading a Beatrix Rose 4 !

A daughter lost...

Nine months ago, Beatrix Rose had her family brutally taken from her. Now all that matters is getting her daughter back. And Beatrix is no ordinary mother - she’s a skilled assassin who will do whatever it takes to find her child.

A daughter found...

Danny Nakamura deserted his post in Vietnam and disappeared into Hong Kong’s Walled City, vowing never to go home again. Decades later, his health failing, he’s suddenly found a reason to return to LA: the discovery of a daughter he never knew he had. But getting home won’t be easy. Danny has powerful enemies in the CIA who will do whatever it takes to keep him out of the country.

The search begins.

Two people adrift in a foreign land, Beatrix and Danny need all the help they can get. A storm is coming. Can they help each other survive it and find their children before time runs out for both of them?

Yes, not expected a Beatrix Rose new book, but a great story, thrilling, action packed international thriller. Travelling from Hong Kong to Cuba.

We travel back to when our Leading lady Beatrix being chased by her old employer Control and the infamous Group Fifteen. After the murder of her husband, the kidnap of her daughter, and her placing on a kill list by Control, she seeks refuge and solace in Hong Kong. However, it's not long before she finds herself in conflict with an elite CIA assassination squad.

You know what you are going to get with Mark Dawson, I read and finished the last 40% of the book till late last night, I just could not put the book down, now I know why I am so tired.

Thrilling, fast paced, action packed. Five stars

Wow a good story with excitment and adventure and intrigue. Loved it. I still don't understand why Mark Dawson has it as #4 and not earlier. Regardless, pick it up.

Exciting adventure with Beatrix Rose as she helps a friend!! Beatrix is looking for her daughter, making 'deals' with many intriguing people who have money and consorts who can act quickly in assistance as soon as needed. Beatrix is strong, smart and well trained in arts that get her out of jams. But she is still kind with a gentle heart, so decides to take time from her search to help another ...
Set in Hong Kong's underground, this high action adventure will have you holding your breath and squeezing your book tightly as you are taken on a wild ride! All characters are very well developed and feel like people you know, you feel the wind blow by your ear as that shot at Beatrix whistles by, hear the cries from somewhere underneath the rubble, unsure of which way to turn...
I highly recommend this exciting story to All, you are totally involved from start to the end and enjoy every moment!!

*Beatrix does not mess around*

This instalment does not follow on from book 2 ‘Blood & Roses’ This one gives us a bit more background into Beatrix and how she operates and she is fearless. I almost feel like this book should have been book 2. Nevertheless it does not take away from the fact that it was a great read.

Beatrix is looking for her daughter after she was betrayed by the very people she worked for the government agency called ‘Group Fifteen’ she was their top Assassin. This happened when she stumbled upon information that the head of the group known as ‘Control’ wanted buried as he would be implicated in things he wanted concealed. They took everything from her including her daughter and she will not let that stand.

In this instalment she is also working with Danny who deserted his post in Vietnam for reasons that unfold in the book. Danny’s health is failing as age is catching up with him.

Years later he discovers he has a daughter and trying to leave Hong Kong to get to her is not straightforward. He holds some compelling evidence that can take down some very powerful people in the CIA. His name flagged up when he is motivated to go to LA to get a passport on the discovery he has a daughter. Beatrix decides to help him. Knowing this task will be fraught with danger does not put her off.

Now Beatrix has to use all her instincts and skills to help Danny to achieve his dream, she will be working with people she does not trust who completely dismiss her thinking she will be easy to kill, after all she is just one woman standing in the way of their prize, they do not know who they are dealing with….

I was fortunate enough to be able to read an ARC of this thriller.

Another Beatrix Rose prequel of her time working for a Triad in Hong Kong. She is still in hiding from Group 15 control, trying to find her missing daughter.

A testament to Mark Dawson's ability to spin a very good yarn is I knew it was a prequel, having read the rest of the series. And yet Dawson was able to inject enough suspense into this tale to keep one guessing. Add a twist and you have a very good novel.

This would be best enjoyed if the reader were to read the Hong Kong trilogy to set the stage for this. White Devil, Nine Dragons, and Dragon Head. There are other Beatrix Rose tales, but the Hong Kong series will enhance Tempest.

Another great story from Mark Dawson, filling in the gaps of the Beatrix Rose story - along with John Milton and Michael Pope, she is one of the Group 15 characters so well constructed by the author. #36 Dawson book for me - he is no 6 Most Read Author

As always from Mark Dawson a very good read... not his best, but still worth taking the time to read a fairly fast paced storyline. This book can easily be read as a stand alone as there is very little to link it to the Hong Kong series apart from regular references to Beatrix's lost daughter.
Mark always has very accurate narrative about the location his books are set in,however on this occasion the continual use of place names, street names etc. became a frustrating distraction because they didn't add to the plot.Unless you know Hong Kong and Cuba well then they mean very little.
There are so many unfinished outcomes with the characters in the book which I guess leaves the door wide open for a follow on at a later date, however Mark don't leave it too long to follow these through otherwise many of your readers will simply move to other similar series.

Such a convoluted tale without much of a hook, but interesting to get some backstory on Beatrix during the time she was away from her daughter. Danny is quite unlikable, so indecisive and feeble (yes, he is 70 and has had a tough life, but so ready to give up at any sign of push back, even pissed Rose off and she likes the guy!). Credit for these people being true to what they say they will do, whether it is Beatrix or John Milton, but really need to make time for themselves to kick back and enjoy some beach time! Hard to imagine they didn't copy these precious tapes as soon as they got them, or even listen to them for that matter! Hell, he could have taped over them years ago with Hall and Oates tunes from the 70s, and since entire plot revolves around these things he didn't ever remember having it would have been nice to hear them! Hard to imagine the guy could be such a suck up that his own men were sacrificed for CIA director, and George really should never have been shot, did nothing to deserve it and yes, showed the guys were ruthless but we already knew that. That Wang business was confusing, and Michael bending over backwards to help seemed out of character for the gangster, while Danny's daughter seemed clueless and rudderless...come on teacher, have a clue! Never did find the bug on the luggage either, another loose end to tie. Amazing to come out of car crash unscathed and ready to rumble, but that's they way they roll.

Mark Dawson is quickly becoming one of my favorite thriller writers. I've read a few different books by him now, mainly the Beatrix Rose series and a few of his Milton book, and he gets better in every way with each book he writes.

In this one, Dawson goes back to help fill in some of the missing time between the main Beatrix Rose series, and we find Beatrix helping a friend in Hong Kong reconnect with his daughter, while trying to turn evidence over to the government about a politician who has a shady past.

I quickly became a fan of Mark Dawson because he builds and develops characters very well, sets and writes incredible action scenes, and takes his readers to exotic locales, and makes them feel like they are really there. He is also excellent at evoking emotions through his characters and their actions, making them feel human, all of which combine to show how talented of a writer he really is.

While this may be the last Beatrix Rose novel we get, this is an action-packed and emotional read, never straying to far away from Beatrix herself, who has become a very strong female protagonist in this often over-filled male genre.

I would gladly read more Beatrix Rose thrillers if he decides to fill in more of her time spent between books. I look forward to reading more stories by Mark Dawson, and seeing where he takes his other characters in the future.

Beatrix Rose is back in an earlier adventure

In search of her kidnapped daughter by the crooked leader of her former British employer, Beatrix, a trained assassin by her British government agency, flees the country and ends up in Hong Kong. A Dawson's series on those. This long awaited additional story has Beatrix helping an older man who has saved her multiple times from the out out of despair. When her friend, Danny gets into his own bout of trouble, Beatrix helps him as he's the only person who has helped her. Her help means dodging and fighting rogue CIA agents in Hong Kong and Cuba. You see, Danny's problem is he's a Vietnam deserter running for his life as his old deployment witnessing things that could get him killed them and now. His old colleagues it seems are now in line to be the Deputy director of the CIA! Only Danny has evidence that can disgrace him and have him court martialed. If he can survive until then.
Oh how I have missed stories of Beatrix Rose. Rose is soon to be the main character of a new upcoming TV show in England. Hopefully, we will be able to see it in the US. I cannot even imagine who can effectively play the former number 1 British agent!

I misplaced my review on this book under The Dragon and the Ghost. So I will try again to review the proper book. I liked this book because we get to see a very human side of Beatrix Rose. Beatrix is a cunning problem solver. Some might call her an assassin, but that was what she did in her former life. Now, in this version of her life, she is solving problems and helping people. She is such a ruthless opponent that it is easy to envision her in a cartoon like figure. A figure that is bigger than life, and almost perfect. She's beautiful, sexy, thin, and can kill you at her discretion. But Dawson provides the human side of Beatrix in this novel as she struggles with the anger, and heartbreak over the kidnapping and loss of her daughter Isabella. It is said we often find ourselves in losing our selves in service of others. Beatrix comes to the aid of a mysterious member of the Triad leadership. More of a I'll save you if you save me than a I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine kind of story. As always with Dawson's books, this one moves along and the tension is present almost from the beginning. 4 thumbs up for me.

In this book Mark Dawson is filling in a period in Beatrix Rose's life which had been passed over in the original series, and he has very successfully woven it into the fabric of her story.
With this author you are assured of four things in each book that he writes: superb locations, which are really evocatively described; a great story; brilliant characters and heart-stopping action.
This book is no exception, Beatrix is a well established character, and in this book we see yet more of that character being fleshed out, and the decline she faces whilst searching for her daughter, but still managing to be as resourceful as ever.
The descriptions of Hong Kong are great and really give you a feel for the area without sounding like a travel brochure, and then of course there is the very clever plot, full of the twists and turns we expect and plenty of heart-stopping action.
For me this is the best of the Beatrix Rose series and maintains the author's standards.
I did receive an advance copy of the book, but this honest review has been voluntarily written.

Just when you thought the Hong Kong story was over...
We travel back to when our Leading lady Beatrix is still attempting to deal with the loss of her family and being chased by her old employer Control and the infamous Group Fifteen.
Her only friend in the world, Danny Chu (aka Danny Nakamura) finds out that he has a daughter in America and is eager to meet her before his Dementia robs him of the chance of getting to know a daughter he never knew he had. The one problem he has is that the American Government are still looking for him after he went AWOL during the Vietnam War; and the soon to be Director of the CIA has other reasons why Danny Chu needs to be found and eliminated.
Another brilliant read by Mark Dawson, fast paced as ever and a pleasure to get another chance of seeing Beatrix Rose' character come to life through the pages of this book. A must read for anyone who loves strong female characters, fast action and the dark side of the CIA.

Beatrix is back and she couldn't be any better

I've missed Beatrix Rose so much. She is fierce, intelligent, complex and the greatest female ex-assassin ever. (The 'female' qualification is only because John Milton is the greatest male ex-assassin ever and they are two of the most wonderful characters I've ever read).
This story builds upon the previous three books about Beatrix's time in Hong Kong, with her taking time out of her search for her daughter Isabella to help a friend. The Americans are at the centre of everything this time and Beatrix and Danny are put to the test in this fast, action-packed and gripping story.
Mark is incapable of writing anything less than perfect. His stories are so evocative; the sounds, the sights, the smells, I feel as though I have actually visited every location he writes about. His books are a joy to read.

Beatrix is back. This time with a good friend, Danny Nakamura, a 70yr old Vietnam Vet. Danny fetches her from the opium dens to save her from herself and also for selfish reasons. He needs her help. The two set out to help each other. For their daughters sake's.

Ducking Johnny Wang, the CIA, and the SAD, their journey takes them from Hong Kong to Cuba. Beatrix, even being out of shape is a bad ass. Taking on these special forces types single handedly, she always has a trick up her sleeve.

Trusting no one but the Triad head that Danny has befriended and worked for she is tearing up the pages with guns, car chases, and booby traps.

Her only goal is to get Danny safe and reunited with his daughter and of course to find her own daughter.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you love thrilling stories with a strong female lead, you'll love Beatrix Rose.

It's been a while since I've been in the world of Beatrix and it was nice to go back in time with her. I think the time frame that the author chose to place this story in was perfect and gives the readers a clue as to her mental state during those first years after Isabella is taken.

As usual, the author does a fantastic job of making each character believable and does a great job of fully developing the main MC's. Also, there is always a "bad guy" and in this case there are several bad guys. I always love the fact that while Beatrix is tough as hell, she's smarter than the bad guys too - which always makes things interesting.

Another great entry to the series. I think you could read this as a stand alone because of the time frame that the story is in - but it is always good to start the series at the beginning to fully understand the history.

Not one of his best, but still earned 4. Unsure why I gave him that many, to be honest.
It's pretty good but dragged quite a bit in the middle. I was checking the reading order and it seems it was written around the time of numbers 11 or 13 of the Milton books: I'm a bit surprised as it didn't seem to have quite the feel of the Milton books...
That might be probably; now I think of it; because Dawson's writing suits the "Milton" character more than the "Rose" character. It's exciting to read about a physically efficient woman; and one who can also plan a reasonable result; but maybe Dawson can't quite pull off the female character as well as he can the Milton character...
Anyway, it's still fun.

A moderately complex thriller with Beatrix in Hong Kong still searching for her daughter, the search being interrupted by her helping an old friend who wishes to return to the US to meet his daughter before he dies. CIA machinations require a detour to Cuba before the immediate magtter is resolved and Beatrix is able to embark on the next stage of her search.

Another readable book from this prodigious author.

The title comes from the play - Prospero, Miranda and Ariel are codenames for three of the characters, Ariel being Beatrix.

This is only the second book I’ve read featuring Beatrix Rose and I quite enjoyed it however I think I would have liked it better had I read more of the previous stories. I was confused as to how she came to lose her daughter and how old was the daughter when she got lost.
Overall, I enjoyed the story I like the plot and the storyline, Mark Dawson has a rare talent for description, he describes the changing countries brilliantly and you can sense the atmospheres of the different countries
However, to properly enjoy this series of books, I think I need to go back to book 1

Here's a history lesson from the world of Beatrix Rose, any followers know how Beatrix's story ends, but here is a chance to see how she gets there. Beatrix has one goal find her daughter, but she becomes discouraged with the lack of information to be found. Perhaps helping a friend find his daughter will lead her to her own missing child. As always the pace is fast with lots of suspense and action. Looking for more stories from Beatrix's adventures after leaving Group 15.

Tempest. Mark Dawson

Beatrix Rose has led a life that included a career in clandestine work. Jobs that M16 were incapable of doing. Then they turned on her. Murdered her husband and kidnapped her small daughter. Her life swiftly spiraled downward. Opiate addiction, freelance work. This is an extremely fast paced masterfully written thriller. Life is starting to turn around for Beatrix.

I’ve yet to read one of Mark Dawson’s books that didn’t deserve 5 stars. A great action packed read. Beatrix won’t replace Milton as my favourite of Dawson’s characters, but she comes close. Only slight criticism is that if, like me, you’ve read all of the Beatrix books, you already know what’s coming in the subplot and I get a lot out of subplot development in a series. That said it’s a cracking read.

CIA - MI6 - GROUP 15???

Beatrix Rose is one person I wish had a longer career because I enjoyed reading about her exploits all over the globe! Maybe we will have Mark Dawson write more about her days in Group 15... She WAS #1 after all!
Reading about like in Hong Kong amazes me... I live right near NYC and I’ve worked there too but Hong Kong has so much more going on behind the big buildings and Beatrix gets into all of it!
If you’re a Beatrix fan like me you’ll love TEMPEST!

Mark Dawson is one of those authors that I'll read no matter what (except for that monster legal book he wrote). He's one of those people that knows how to tell a story and keeps you interested. Tempest was a great story! I love Beatrix.

I'm one of those readers that has to catch a paragraph or two during breaks at work or maybe while the wife is shopping. It's easy for me to pick up where I left off, and continue the story.

Another great entry into the Beatrix Rose series. This one is part of the prequel books, based in Hong Kong when she worked for the Triad. Although not Mr. Dawson's best book in either Beatrix Rose series, I enjoyed it a lot. It was a little draggy in spots but the characters were interesting and I love how she 'takes care of business'. ;-) Highly recommend all of Mark Dawson books.

I love her. I love her and all the shit she gets into. She's quick witted, she's sharp, she's dangerous, she loyal, she's lovely. It's always such a joy to read about Beatrix and getting to know Danny was great, as well. He's so sweet and just want to get to know his daughter he just found out existed and he also got along so well with Beatrix. I really wished Beatrix's series was as long as John Milton's because i'll never get tired of reading about her and her wild adventures.
