After the sudden suspicious death of their father in San Diego, fifteen-year-old Billy and his little sister Susie set out on a very unusual and exciting adventure with their mother. Headed for their grandfather's ranch in South Dakota, they experience terrifying danger, supernatural entities determined to stop them, and Native American mysticism and magic. Discovering intimate ties with the local Sioux Indian tribe, they find they have inherited powers that may ultimately decide the fate of humanity. Facing racism, Indian mistreatment, government corruption, and corporate greed, Billy will confront the epitome of Evil alone. Will his newly discovered powers be enough to save his family and his people?
Born and raised on a ranch near Santa Barbara, California, Ellwood Cooper grew up working the ranch and riding horses. He graduated with degrees in English and English/American Literature from Cal State University, Long Beach.
Intriguing and suspenseful, with very interesting characters, especially the strong and confident women. Leads up to the intense finale little by little, and doesn't disappoint. Involves the supernatural and mysticism, and has undertones of prejudice and racism involving Native Americans, corporate greed, political abuses, and government corruption, all wrapped up in an excellent story. Extremely well written!
Racism, bigotry, prejudice and hatred come in all forms, and this book handles issues that are very prominent in today's society, but told in a microcosm of Native American mistreatment and abuse. Important concerns are displayed in an entertaining, adventurous, sometimes sad, sometimes funny story about the trials of two young siblings. It is an excellent story, well-written and riveting . . . a real page-turner.
I enjoyed this book almost like I was a teenager again, myself. It was engaging and suspenseful with enough plot twists to keep it interesting. I liked the way it moved the focus back and forth between Billy and his sister, Susie, giving them both an important role.
Stunningly written novel from the Native-American point of view...loved to follow the characters and what they learned along the way. The magic, storytelling, and characters were all intriguing to follow.
