I got attached to a manga series that has one volume release per year. Great. Lol

The endless gore, unnecessary violence, and maiming is not doing anything for me. At this point, I don't care what the messages/themes are, I don't want to witness children seeing violence or experiencing it themselves. Such a shame, cuz the story and worldbuilding are truly awesome, but the obnoxious amount of violence is ruining it.

The world is getting more and more complicated. Comparing to previous volumes, vol. 6 wasn’t too bad in terms of uncomfortable panels.
But once again a reminder that I only continue reading the manga because my library has it, I wouldn’t have spent my money on it.

The tear-jerking tone of the last volume has taken a breather for awhile. In its place is unease, tempered for awhile with wonder and the thrill of exploration again, before giving way to an intense, creeping dread.

Our heroes discover that Bondrewd and his crew weren't the only settlement this deep into the Abyss, and the society they discover feels utterly and truly alien. That's not an easy thing to pull off. From the creatures that populate it, to the rules they abide by, to the strange, halting cadence of their speech, it all feels convincingly like a place where things with an inhuman mindset would live.

This Abyssal city isn't the only change of venue we get here. For the first time, we get a glimpse of the world beyond the island, and we finally touch base with the characters we left back in Orth. And...without giving too much away, there are some very dire implications at play here. Especially when you remember that time works differently on the surface than it does inside the Abyss.

After a couple volumes spent dealing with Bondrewd, it's good to get back to the world-building and exploration again. The Abyss, itself, is beginning to feel more like a character again, and looking at the last chapter or two of this volume with that in mind makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I can't say much more without spoiling something, so I'll leave off with saying that volume 6 hit all the right buttons for me.

Misterioso

Riko, Reg, and Nanachi finally make it to the Sixth Layer. There something precious is stolen from them and they follow the thief's trail only to discover a village of Hollows. It doesn't take long for the strangeness of the village's denizens to go from weird-but-innocent to trapped-in-a-flesh-aquarium-freakout.

I would say this volume is a breather after the visual and visceral onslaught that was volume 5. However, it's only really sedate in its pacing. Otherwise this volume is Made in Abyss at its possibly most slimy, penetrating, and nobby. The village of the Hollows seems like what would have happened if Hieronymus Bosch and HR Giger teamed up in the afterworld to write a tv pitch for a Teletubbies-style kids show. It's truly nightmarish and yet oddly innocent. More than once I had to look away a few times before really taking in an image. While I appreciated its effectiveness, the amount Tsukushi seemed to revel in the biological grossness of his creations was...maybe a little much for me. Not to mention toilet-antics abound.

On the story-telling front this is a solid volume. It's an intriguing beginning to a new story arc. I also appreciated the introduction of narrative aside chapters that flesh out concurrent events. The mystery surrounding Reg is even further deepened. An awesome new character is introduced and you get a whole glimpse of a horrifyingly weird society. Ace stuff. Can't wait to get traumatized all over again when Volume 7 drops sometime in the fall!

The trio descend into the very weird 6th layer, which is filled with odd and dangerous creatures and Hollows. The Hollows have a very odd primitive manner of being which revolves around setting value to themselves and their interests as a form of currency. The entire introduction to these Hollows is very foreign and unsettling.

There's a weird sort of Princess Hollow named Faputa with a form similar to Nanachi's but she has 4 arms and apparently remembers Reg somehow.

We also get a glimpse of how the birthday curse is affecting everyone back in town and the orphanage. There's a "traveler" who looks oddly like Riko (Lyza?!) who is working with a medical ship caravan. That auntie lady said she'd known her 7 years ago is it Lyza somehow? Little Kiyuo was affected but the second they took him in the ship off the island his fever went away immediately.

Continues to be a great series even though this one was lacking some punch for me. The lore for this series seems bottomless. New characters continue to be introduced and new foods, monsters, locations. It's a feast for the eyes but I can't keep track of it all unless I go on a reading binge.

Of course at this point I've gotten used to the sexual and scatological references in the book for the main characters but it's hard to ignore that if they were removed the from the story not much would be changed or lost

J'adore toujours autant.

I found this one less emotionally devastating than the last two or three. I am not sure if I am relieved or disappointed by that as it is the emotional rollercoaster that keeps me coming back to this series. This one also has more of the storyline about those living at the surface. I know that there is that birthday death mystery going on but I am just less invested and therefore less interested in this storyline.

Few chapters and already it's the 'eternal fortune flowers' and deaths.
A theory:
Are the Eternal fortune flowers' real reason for the curse or isn't it odd that they use it as incense, they use it for the funeral, for the celebration. Also everyone loves that flower but that flower creates a perfect hideout for ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ insects which lays eggs on its prays brain while keeping it alive. Scary! That flower holds some mystery within itself for sure.

A great story and manga, or would be if not for the fact that the author is a full p*d*ph*le. The manga features some disturbing and/or gross depictions of children right in your face from time to time (which, in case anyone wonders, do not add anything to the deeper meaning of the story and come literally out of nowhere). Do not read if not ready to scroll past such imagery, and please do not buy. A censored version is available on reddit.

I was naive and thought the story was gonna be more wrapped up by this point but it turns out the author is just taking some time off. I am so curious about so much! What’s going to happen?? So many questions. I just want to know how the abyss came to be, and I’m satisfied at least that now we know the people who first visited the golden city. But still, so much to be known. Such a wild ride

Not much happens in this manga, but what does happen is interesting. There are also a few flashbacks and impressions from the city on the Abyss.

Riko's team finally reach the sixth layer and... this volume focuses on showing some the dangers it has. It's still dark and brutal, but it's also a slower paced volume after all that happened on the previous one.

But that does not mean it's slow at all. We are still introduced to new concepts, there are new dangers and mysteries, and a lot is set up.

Another good volume.

While this volume more disturbing in its ideas than its visuals mostly, there's still a part that made me squirm. Majikayja's design is much more unsettling than in the anime. Faputa while still being a favorite character of mine doesn't have quite the violent, but cute energy she has in the anime, which knowing spoilers compliments her character well. The mystery just goes deeper and deeper.

About: The trio have entered the 6th layer

Review: This introduced a whole city, a new character, and a population of hollows. Riko's whistle was taken to be molded into its true form, whereas Reg tries to recover more of his memories. I felt so bad for the little creature Riko had with her. I'm glad it'll heal.

The story is interesting, the abyss is fascinating, the art is not at all a style I like but is incredibly well done and there is so much beautiful detail. There is a bit of oddly placed child nudity that makes me uncomfortable but it’s not so often so I just push past it.

Nice to get more of Reg's backstory, but there was a disappointing lack of Riko in this volume tbh. Pacing felt decent. There was a lack of action scenes, but I didn't mind, since sometimes the battles in this series become impossible to follow in this artstyle.
